  • In the final episode of this trilogy covering the Zittau Railway we rejoin our train at Kurort Jonsdorf, with the snow still falling heavily we watch our locomotive run round its train ready for the return journey. Please sit back and enjoy the fairy-tale snow covered Saxony landscape as we set off back to Bertsdorf and Zittau.
The Zittau Mountains are situated in Southeast Saxony close to the Polish-Czech border. Daily trains connect Zittau to the health resorts of Oybin and Jonsdorf passing through attractive countryside and pretty villages along the way. It was snowing hard for most of our journey adding a little extra excitement as the loco crew cleared snow from around the points to allow our train to pass safely over them. Operations at Bertsdorf junction of the branches to Oybin and Jonsdorf were particularly interesting as our locomotive preformed a complicated manoeuvre in the ever deepening snow to change direction from the Kurort Oybin to the Jonsdorf branch. This journey will be covered in three parts.

Enjoyed watching every episode of this long trip. Where I live we seldom see rain, let alone snow. For me it was very thrilling and exciting to see snow everywhere. Thank you for the excellent work you've done for us the watchers. May God give you the strength and energy so you can continue the great work.

Hi, thank you for your kind comment. Snow has become rare in my home country (England), during my childhood years it was an annual occurrence, it has now become a once in every ten years event. As an old timer I still find snow exciting, we even had a snowball fight, bringing back happy childhood memories. I enjoy filming and sharing these videos and I'll keep doing them for as long as I can, God willing, I've still got a few more years left in me.

Thanks Tim, I enjoyed all episodes in the trilogy. The cool of the winter snow, especially when viewed on a hot sunny afternoon, was refreshing. The sky was leaden at times…

I was in Gorlitz and Zittau for 6 weeks (June through mid July). I'd love to go back there to ride this train (which is like a bus on tracks) in the wintertime. Looks like great fun (dressed in the proper warm clothes).

Hi, the area around Gorlitz and Zittau is very pleasant, even in winter. It was a lot of fun, especially for a bunch of Brits not used to seeing snow on a regular basis.

@@Timsvideochannel1 I will be coming back to this during this summer's heat. The snowy landscape will put me in a cooler frame of mind. tolle Winterstimmung auf einer interessanten Strecke!
    11:30 beheizt folgt unbeheizt 🙃
12:22 lustige Schneemützen bei den Weichen

17:31 man sieht genau, wenn ein Gleis nicht gebraucht wird

    28:47 was für eine ungewöhnliche Verkehrsweg-Überlagerung 😯

Hello Keith, I really enjoyed the snow, it's no longer an annual event down here on the South Coast, I think it has been more than 10 years since the last significant fall in West Sussex. I love these East German narrow gauge railways, they are reasonably priced to travel on and they run 365 days a year to a regular timetable. The next video is also filmed in the snow; you will need an industrial grade hot water bottle to watch it. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride. Cheers. Tim.

It's not a common sight anymore, as many railways around the world where this could be seen have either closed or been converted to standard gauge. I have seen this type of crossing in North Wales, Australia, Switzerland, Colorado and India.
