WIKISPEED Demo cutting aluminum plate with an angle grinder

- Ryan shows us how to hold and move an angle grinder, or cutoff wheel, to cut .25" thick aluminum 6061-T6 plate. These are good practices for a smooth cut in aluminum plate for prototyping. For volume parts, we waterjet cut our parts using a machine controlled by a computer (a CNC waterjet cutter). For prototyping, we use a $19.95 4.5" angle grinder from harbor freight, or this much nicer Ryobi unit, to cheaply and quickly test our ideas.
The title should be "WIKISPEED Demo 'how not to cut' aluminum plate with an angle grinder
True
I can't believe this is like the third video I've seen that shows you "how to" do something that is an absolute no-no. Cutting aluminum with an abrasive wheel like other commentors have stated is NOT ok. The wheel will fly apart. How do people not know this? It's common sense. It is the most basic metal working knowledge. Crazy.
I like to first cut steel with the cutoff wheel, then switch it to aluminum so it shoots thermate fire out in a big WOOOOSH :). how do you not know this yet. crazy bruh
Demo cutting aluminum plate......where? when does the cutting start? Just a freaking waste of time on safety! If I was 12 maybe this would help, but since the video has absolutely NOTHING to do with the description, maybe it wouldn't! Thank goodness for fast forward so I didn't waste any more of my time than I already did!
do not do this - its a spoof.... everything on here is just wrong
Johann Coetzee, maybe they are trying to get people to get injured
OMG, do NOT cut aluminum like this. where is the safety guard? where is the dedicated aluminum cut off wheel designed specficall for aluminum? use a carbide tipped circular saw, miter saw, or jig saw would be 100x safer!
If you used a disc made for hardened steel and you were cutting aluminiun, how fast would the disc clog with melted aluminum?
I seen videos stating that using and angle grinder gives way for toxic discharge from the aluminum while being cut.
I've always heard that it was a bad idea to cut soft metals like aluminum with an angle grinder because it's such a "sticky" metal and it can destroy your cutting disc.
I always use my sawzall with a bi-metal blade to cut aluminum.
Dude please get a jigsaw and a decent aluminum cutting blade. You can plow thru plates twice as thick in half the time with a tenth of the same risk of bodily harm. Not to mention the cut will be a hundred times cleaner. Angle grinders with standard cutoff discs are like one of the worst ways to cut aluminum. Hell, even an angle grinder with a disc meant for stone would be better than this standard abrasive cutting disc.
very dangerous to use angle grinder without its guard fitted !!!
Is this video intentionally misleading people...???
Never use abrasive wheels on soft metals like lead or aluminum. The metal sticks to the blade and as it heats it expands in the crevices fracturing the blade and sending it everywhere. Also use the angle grinder guard.
I know a man who tried to use an angle grinder to cut aluminum with an abrasive wheel. The wheel exploded violently like you mentioned. He is now missing four fingers. I would never cut aluminum with an abrasive wheel.
@@k9er233 That's horrible. Sympathies to that man. There aren't many ways to efficiently cut aluminum unfortunately. I guess to go to is the band saw but it takes a ridiculous amount of time for large barstock. Even then it gums up pretty fast if you don't keep the blade well lubricated with a solvent saturated oil like WD40.
DONT CUT ALUMINUM LIKE THIS PEOPLE. THIS IS WRONG. AND DEFINETLY DONT USE RYOBI TOOLS OR HARBIR FREIGHT CHEAP QUALITY WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOU TO GET HURT.
this guy is off his rocker no guard on the grinder, dodgy blade... hear comes a fail!!
Where is the demo?
Cutting aluminium with angle grinder is very dangerous
he has the adapter on top ,it goes on the bottom . who is responsible for this bullshit
and you see the Ryobi tool as making it right? next you have ads by other dealers.
he's wearing what I call the shield of shame
You obviously have not used the angle grinder much. A face shield is mandatory along with eye protection especially when doing cuts on a frame where you might have upward cuts.
+Dave Smith I use an angle grinder very often , I nake home made knoves and use it to cut thru 1/8 inch steel I use saftey glasses , but I call it that because im a metal forming engineer , and it isnt mandatory the glasses are , but others choose to wear the shield , those who are scared...
+Adrian Soto make*
@@bumblebeeprime14psn53 so you're a home gamer who has never seen what a wire wheel or a disc catastrophically failing does to a persons face.
Absolutely how not to cut aluminum tbh.
his is SO SO unsafe this video should be removed
No guard.? WTF
