USING THE SAME GRIP AS PHIL MICKELSON - CLAW/PENCIL GRIP

  • Mike and I took a stab at "giving a lesson" on the claw/pencil grip that's been working so well for us. This putting grip is used by players like Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott. Mike has modified what they do to work for him and I've modified what Mike taught me to work for me. Experiment with it and see if it works for you.
    Mike and I started this journey in January of 2017. What started as a simple passion project to make fun golf videos of amazing courses has taken us to places we would never have imagined back then. Through the years we've been blessed to be able to meet so many great people and experience so many amazing courses. If there's anything you take away from our journey its this: do what you love and do it with conviction. The rest will take care of itself.
    Thank you all who have supported us through this journey.

    That's the great thing about golf. You can personalized it to your needs and abilities. The end goal is the same for everyone, but the route taken differs for everyone. Thanks for the video.

    Probably one of the most helpful instructional videos out there, even if you don't like this grip. I really like that you tell your viewers that they need to play around with it to get it right for them, which of course would be a great reminder for any grip, on any shot.
    I'm just starting to get an interest back after 7 or 8 years out and I was an absolute hack before. I'm going to give this a try just because every aspect of my game sucks and it would be nice to have just one part of it working a little better.

    Wow! My only regret is not trying this sooner! With golf we all tend to say no to change and wonder why we are not progressing! This has been a big wake up call for me question other elements of my game! Thank you!

    I just saw the video 5 minutes before I went out on 9 holes, and I tried the grip and it was amazing, I've had a lot of trouble with my putting, but this grip really helped me out. Thanks guys :)

    I had a similar experience... was left hand low for years and then developed a bad case of the yips. I switched to the pencil grip this year because it just felt like I had more control with my hand more under the grip. The yips were gone and I can finally stroke the putter without lunging at it and my handicap dropped from a 9 to a 7 this summer. I was so happy I literally wanted to have a party to celebrate. Recently l’ve been having problems seeing the line and aiming more left. I will try opening up my stance to see if this helps. BTW, I’ve also suffered with the chipping yips for years and have been using this grip for short chips and it helps with that also.

    I thought this grip looked crazy before and was more of an unexplainable way to disrupt the psychological yips, but after watching Marko's success with it and having it explained, I'll give it a go. Why not!?

    Great video guys, I don't use a claw/pencil type grip but about 2 years ago my putting was soooooo bad I had to do something and ended up spending about 9 months practicing putting as often as I could, but it was all about finding a way to keep the putter on line back and through as I used to loop on the backswing, and loop it both ways, I knew I was doing it but couldn't stop and tried every grip, technique and training drills I could find in books, magazines and online with no luck, finally I started developing my own grip and now I putt much better, I grip 'normal' with the left hand but put my right hand on so my palm is totally under the grip with a two and half finger overlap of the right hand over the left, works good for me, I agree with what Mike said about feel, now I pick my line, line up, take my grip, make sure putter is square to the line and have confidence I'll take it back and through on line so my focus is now on the speed.

    Thanks for the tips guys, loving the videos. I have been experimenting with different grips through the winter months to get better at putting, I have settled on something that I am going to use for this season to see if that helps in my game, and I am tracking the info from each round.

    Thanks guys!
    I've been messing around with a 2 finger pencil vs the 1 finger and was putting great on the practice green but something just didn't feel right and it was how I positioned my left hand (right handed golfer).
    I really like both approaches you guys have and I've always putted with a slightly open stance but some for some reason I tried squaring up my stance which just felt unnatural for me.
    I'm going to try both of these grips tomorrow.
    Thanks so much for the this video!

    PS Mike you’re still using the Pencil Claw grip to this day, right?

    A very helpful video.
    As they advised adjust the grip to what YOU LIKE.
    If it feels RIGHT it probably WILL BE RIGHT.
    I use the Golf Pride Tour SNSR 140 cc, 124 gms. grip which I find very comfortable.

    This is probably going to sound stupid for most of you but it wasn't the grip that helped my putting most in this tip. Coach's description of where his eyes are aligned. I felt DUH, watch the hit and the target? Hadn't realized before this tip, I could actually see the hit through to the target.

    Thanks,my putting is suspect even though I roll a straight putt. My challenge is reading putts and getting the break right. Since I track my stats, 37.1 putts per round, I'll be able to measure changes. I'm going to switch and we'll see how it goes.

  • @strokerAce411
    @strokerAce411 7 лет назад +1

    good advice gents... I've switched to this technique this year also and am finding some success. did you have any issues with speed when you switched? Do you keep the same grip no matter the length of the putt? I've seen some guys that use it switch to the standard grip when hitting short 1 footers (or less).

  • @charlesyoung6419

    Guys, this is extremely helpful. I switched to a similar grip about 3 weeks ago or so to experiment.
    Quick question. Are you guys purposely setting up with the ball off your back foot? If so, is there a specific reason (better vision, seeing the lines better, etc)?

    • @Golfholics
      @Golfholics  7 лет назад +4

      Having it towards the rear foot helps us hit the ball more square on the face. Further forward and we tend to miss hit it lower on the putter face (as we're coming up). But again, its a preference thing. Try it out and see how it feels.

    • @adamboerger408
      @adamboerger408 7 лет назад +2

      with an stance open, the ball isn't as far back as it seems, its more centered which helps with aiming. imo

    O'Meara didn't use the claw grip in 1998. Just saying. I've been using the claw myself for 10 years and have converted many of my students to the claw grip over the years and have yet to see one student not grasp it. Most golfers would see a huge improvement by switching from their "conventional" grip to either claw or cross handed grip.

    When you open your stance, is there a certain degree that you open to? Or whatever feels comfortable?

    • @jimmydan29

      an open stand will always lead to a more curved stroke. Thats why tiger does it. Interesting that the guys do the for an grip typically used for a straighter stroke

    • @uniquekreation

      I currently use a standard size Scotty Cam grip on my futura putter. Should i bump up to a midsize?

    • @Golfholics
      @Golfholics  7 лет назад +1

      I think having a midsize grip helps but I'm doing it with the normal skinny grip right now with no issues. Again, just comes down to preference and what feels better. If you have smaller hands than a smaller grip might be better.

  • @richardgruetter1014
    @richardgruetter1014 3 года назад

    Michelson is a great chipper and a poor putter. The claw got him to move away from his forward leaning shaft which is one of the reason he misses so many short putts. Also, his choice of putter is not the greatest.
