As a long term owner of a 2009 Porsche Cayenne GTS with over 200,000km on it, I can tell you that this is the best goddamn SUV in the world. Mine still runs and it runs like a champ, and I live in Canada with nasty winters. This car will not die and nothing has broken down except for the rack and pinion which was damaged because of bad road conditions that pierced a rubber cover and water managed to get in. Other than that which is kinda out of my control, the car is a solid tank and just an overall athletic performer whether it's for getting grocery, or enthusiastic driving in ski country, this is the best SUV I ever owned. I will eventually be getting a new one and giving this one to my kid if it doesn't break down before he turns 18, until then this baby will keep on going!
We have a 2004 V6 Cayenne, one of the first in Calgary. 280,000kms, not a single problem other than the coil pack needed to be replaced after 160k ($700).
Same here.. I have a 2008 Cayenne S with 210,000 KMS (130,000 Miles) all done by me.. and I live in the Middle East where temperatures easily hit 50c (122 F).. minor issues over almost 10 years now.. I've owned a number of SUV's and by far the Cayenne is the best handling.
This is a very compelling video. I don't even like SUVs, and I found this completely interesting and entertaining. Also, all the exterior on-the-road shots are better than anything else I've seen that's made for RUclips. Bravo
I have a 06 cayenne S 180k miles. I will say this thing is fun to drive! Hell best bang for buck! If you know how to turn a wrench you will be fine common things are coolant pipes which are plastic and cardan shaft center bearing tends to go bad! Funny thing is I drive my cayenne s more than my 2012 camaro ss! Recommend anyone thinking about purchasing one! Do it you won’t regret it!
I'm going to San Antonio tomorrow to probably get a 2008 Cayenne S. Thank you guys for the honest review and thank you to the people adding comments about how they are faring with their purchases. I am stoked to put this in my garage next to my 06 Cayman S!
I own a 09 GTS with 124k. Factory towing package, and still amazing to drive daily. Once you have owned one of these amazing vehicles, nothing else compares.
I'm considering replacing my VW 2005 Touareg V8 with a second hand 2013 Cayenne Turbo and appreciate your episodes on the Cayenne as general guidance. So Thanks Paul and Todd.
I think not being in a city has a lot to do with the car lasting this long without many parts failing. Living in NYC our cars go through hell and back with all the potholes and bumps and hard accelerations and stopping constantly. I would imagine other than having to deal harsh weather the roads are better and traffic is significantly less in Utah so that helps.
My wife has the 2010 Cayenne Base and it is just about ready for and 80,000 mile service. We bought it about 1.5 years ago and have been very happy with it. It is silver, so doesn't show the scratches like the black one does. All we have had to do so far is oil changes. We take it camping with the kids and on road trips. We throw a Thule roof box up on the rack and truck down forest service roads. The faster you drive it, the better it handles, but the V6 feels under powered for a Porsche. Over 4,000 RPMs things are much better making the Tiptronic a must. No lightning shifts, but at least you can get to the power band when you want to. Overall, it just feels solid.
Love my 2010 Cayenne V6 957 and German cars as a whole. I will say though... Japanese cars don’t break often. If you want reliability and longevity, get a Honda/Acura or Toyota/Lexus, period. :- )
Oh, you do NEED the Turbo, you need it. Or someone does. I do. Looks like you guys are in Colorado. In a 5000lb SUV up Vail Pass (12,000'), I'll take 500hp every day over the 290 in this video. I think all Cayennes are underrated and are strong, built like a tank, can last 200k+ miles if well taken care of. Especially the 08+ where they ironed out a few of the earlier kinks i.e. engine scoring, plastic coolant pipe breakage, etc.
3:40 regarding shift buttons, turn off the PSM and it responds much faster. I got my S last November and I love it. Mine has air suspension and 20" wheels and it's a stunning driving experience, it's coming up on 90k miles and 13 years sold!
The VR6 Cayenne is one of the best "hidden" bang for your $$$, they are very reliable. The only major issue is the transfer case going out in the 958, and people have had good success with changing out the Porsche "lifetime" case fluid. I change mine out every 10k as it's super easy. Another cool trick is your friendly VW dealer/tech can work on them for half the cost.
I recently bought a 2009 Cayenne S. it has air suspension, pano roof, nav, bluetooth, bose, and other options for just under 27k. It only has 45k miles and looks brand new in and out. The original sticker was 84k. These things are great values right now. Plus, I like the styling of the prior gen. better than the current one. The new gen. looks too rounded and a bit de-masculated to me.
@@IYG-x7c I have had it almost 3 years and air suspension still working great. However, the high pressure fuel pump went out and that was over a thousand dollars. Still love the vehicle though.
@@morganvon5664 I think they are just rare here in Boston. Took me 6+ months to find something that I like and with reasonable price. I don't see much Cayennes here and only seen a few Diesels
I'm interested in having this be my first car. Everybody tells me not to because it's going to fall apart and become a money pit, but after reading some of these comments, I feel so much more confident in my decision. This is truly the only car I can see myself enjoying and actually WANTING to take care of, and in my opinion, thats a good enough reason to fork over some heavy cash.
so would you stick with the v6 or is the 4.8 cost about the same to maintain? also looking at these for about A year for my wife to replace her trailblazer
Early V8s were very problematic, after the 2008 refresh they became more reliable. Costs do increase a bit as you step into higher models. The biggest factor is how many extras, bells & whistles, things-to-go-wrong a specific model has. We know a loaded Turbo S is definitely more expensive to own than the base V6 Cayenne. A mid-level V8 should be a generally reliable model. Thanks for watching!
The reliability of the Cayenne (I suspect) can be attributed to this particular model's relative simplicity. No turbos mean less heat, less complication, fewer potential breakdown points, etc. I do wonder how the V8 holds up - the non-turbo version.
I’m 23 and I’m in the military. I’m thinking of getting a cayenne then I won’t need any other car. But I want to ha e a car I can drive everyday...I also want the turbo. I’m seriously an thinking about it...I also don’t want to beat on it.
I would love it if you can test a 2007-2009 Acura MDX base edition and I really wanna hear your opinion in the ACURA MDX compared to the Cayenne. I have a 2008 MDX with 223000 KM on it here in Canada. I am considering a 2008 Cayenne V6 rather than another MDX.
You mantioned keys, idk its probably just yours, I have 2005, bought with 89k miles, have 165k now and both keys still in good shape, dropped em so many times and still not a single time it separated!
Hey guys, I think you need to check your audio with one of your cameras/mic pairing. At the camera angle you've been using at the beginning of the video and the same camera i assume around @2:45, there is a noticeable high pitched whine associated with the pickup. Its very high pitch and maybe your age doesn't catch it but if you test it out with someone younger and take random audio bits from that camera you can test it out to notice the high pitch audio malfunction. P.s dvr'd some of your tv stuff, missed the first two episodes but im excited to see the new stuff. Buying a 2013 brz in buffalo of your love for the twins!
What about the V8 models? I heard those have serious issues and csbron buildup, no? I would gladly buy an older V8 for less money, but with reliability concerns I am looking at 2015 V6 S only
I still love my '04 Turbo. Kenwood deck gives me all of the latest gadgets. I agree the key fob blows and a couple of there very minor annoyance but never get tired of pavement ripping torque. If we still had rum runners they would be running in Cayenne Turbos; can haul 100 gal moonshine cross country and still keep ahead of the revenuers.
sell the jeep. jeeps are certified buckets of shit. Unless you value going into see the mechanic often then keep the jeep. Otherwise run as far as you can from that 5000 pound hunk of garbage they call a grand cherokee.
My 1995 Cherokee sport just rolled over 230k. It's required a radiator, a cat, a starter, and a few water pumps. Otherwise, normal wear and tear. All told about $1000 in unplanned repairs in 23 years. Still gets 23 mpg on the highway, or about 21 if I'm on the freeway going 80 with the AC on.
i mean for the most part Chrysler makes horrible products there is a reason they always rank at the bottom of reliability rankings. I believe in 2015 (year of his grand cherokee) Jeep was 28 of 30 in terms of reliability amongst major auto manufactures only bested by Chrysler and Fiat both part of the same company. I know multiple people with these piles of junk and they are all money pits. Glad your 95 is still kicking but I wouldn't replace it with one of these new piles of trash when it comes time.
They still use the VR6 in the new base Cayennes. They're not that bad. The oil filter is in a ridiculous spot though. With that model year you would usually see vacuum leaks by the cowl, evap faults, oil separators, and water leaking in the cabin from clogged cowl drains. Obviously not every Cayenne is gonna be a problem car. You just see the worst of the worst when you're in a dealer. But make sure all your drains are clear in case you are anywhere that can have heavy rain..
Any experience off road? I'm not interested in Moab runs or rock crawling, but how does it do on some of the dirt roads and two-tracks in Utah (fellow resident here). Thanks for great productions!
B Miller All the first generation Cayenne have low range gearing so it can off road better than most crossovers, but it can be a little bumpy because of the tight suspension. They’s a couple of other suspension options to look for to increase its on and off road manners. Look into PASM and the rare PDCC. Both of these are air suspensions that can adjust the height and shock damping. But with any fancy suspension, repairs will be costly. And no I’m not talking out my butt, I’ve driven the Cayenne on an autocross track and bumpy gravel roads.
Old Cayenne's are cheap here in my location. . I didn't bother to ask or research the costs to maintain this, considering people are selling a Porsche for so low.
Absolutely, I bought my 04, 4 years used and still drive it. New Kenwood updates the tech. If you're big person you will love the seats. It has been reliable with few issues.
My father bought one with equivalent 200K usd to buy of this (base model) in China. But I appreciate it nonetheless. The only overpriced things of my family that I personally thought is worthy.
VW combined the excitement of a Porsche with their own VW reliability and what you get is an astonishing fast and practical SUV. however, i think its time fir germams to hire japanese electricians because their car electronics are as bad as the typical weather in the north pole
My wife wanted a SUV . I wanted a Cayenne GTS but she wanted a 3 row SUV so I didn't even get to drive a Cayenne . We ended up buying a new 2016 Toyota Highlander XLE it is very nice but it's not that fun to drive . My 2005 Volkswagen Passat GLS Wagon with 1.8 Turbo & a 5 speed stick is a blast to drive. So keep up the long term up date on the Cayenne I might want trade my Passat off for one down the road.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a world beater. Check the underpinnings and look at the underpinnings of the Mercedes ML, it is the same car!! Now compare that with the seat of the pants real world comparison of this Cayenne against the Jeep. The fact that there is that noticeable difference is evidence of the engineering of Porsche. Porsche is knowing for reliability in racing which is why they have won so much. 962's at LeMans etc., the emphasis was on reliability not just performance resulting in consistency. This is the basis for their cars. Yes parts will cost more and repair from the dealer will cost more but there are enough independents around you can get a reasonable repair rate from. Think of Ferrari, Jaguar in the 1950's where you would drive to the track, chance tires, race your car for 24 hours then drive it home. No break downs, etc. I worked at a sports car garage in a alley in high school, 1970's. The guy had a 1962 250 Ferrari GTE. I was just a high school kid who liked cars. He asked me to help out since I come almost every day to look and talk cars. He had me restitching interiors, painting cars, (Aston Martin DB5, and we worked on a rebuild of a Columbo engine for the GTE which the owner's wife had let run out of oil and it started to break down. He oversaw the repair but had me, not a mechanic but a novice care buff, although pretty knowledgeable through reading and being an enthusiast, do most of the work. The idea I hear about how complicated these cars were is almost silly. They were extremely well engineered but nothing you could not learn to repair and not much different than the Chevy 350 engine I built in my basement with few power tools and put in my 62 Chevy II/Nova and raced around. Knew nothing but what I read in Hot Rod and purchased the parts by mail order. So the result these guys are getting is not unusual to me. Now if it was a BMW, Mercedes, newer Jaguar, Land Rover, then I would say it was a dangerous bet. The fact is when you buy a Porsche as 911, and Turbo owners can attest to you get a fast, comfortable, reliable sports car in comparison to other sports cars. I am now shopping a 2008 GTS which I can get for cheaper than a Grand Cherokee, Tahoe, etc., and with only 70,000 miles. Do not drive much because I usual bike commute so it will not be commuted often which will result in me having expectant carefree usage, probably more so than they had.
how is the shoulder room for a 6 foot plus guy? I am definitely considering a V8 model for my wife. I am a mechanic, so most issues are of no concern to me.
Just bought a cayenne. I'm 6'8 260 lbs with wide shoulders. I fit better in this all the other cars I've had. One of the reasons I bought it. I've had it about a month. So far, I love it!
I would think the reliability should be fairly high for the power train as the motor and drive train are not as stressed as they are in other application. Isn't the motor a detuned version of something they put in a 911 or boxster/caymen?
How does a car guy buy a jeep.they are know to be extremely unrelyable.everybody knows that cmon.or maybe your like me i like porsche i know they stuff up and expensive to maintane but i bought it anyway
You're key is aftermarket if it's falling to bits, mine has both original keys on a 04/05 and they're solid. The original video you did of this the reason I bought my Cayenne S with the V8.
I used to sell the Jeeps too. Anything fwd from that brand is the worst cars you can buy the grand sadly is s huge piece of shit as well. They always break and that trans for some reason a time bomb. Chrysler products not meant to go fast are crap. Take it from a guy who sold them for over three years.
Where are you driving, looks like the area south of Reno, Nevada? beautiful! Also Jeeps are fucking trash compared to Porsches! I have a 2012 cayenne and its even 'more nimble' because they shaved 400 lbs off of it! Just go get one of those in S trim and don't look back!
2009-11 was such a high water mark for every car Porsche built, in terms of reliability and design (I WANT A 2.9 CAYMAN...but nobody sells them because they got one of the best porsches >
I never said FCA products were reliable. Lol. From personal experience though, it seems German cars are designed to run perfectly for exactly 100,000 miles.
Where have you recorded this video? The scenery is great haha :D yeah the Cayenne is cool to... and as everybody says: the Jeep is kinda shit :D that's why they crashed so many in Fast 8 haha
I bought a 2009 Cayanne with the V6, 59,000 miles on it, fully serviced - had the history. The blower motor went out at 60k, the entire PCM has now gone out at 63k. Unfortunately it's living up to a German car reputation. Wishing I had kept my Lexus...

There's an 09 base on Carmax for pretty cheap right now. Love to get it, a bumper to bumper warranty and never worry.
Thanks for the videos and the confidence. I'm looking at some Cayennes and the reliability seems to be very high, much better than BMW for sure.
why do you have a Jeep? you don’t have a family or anything and Cayenne’s likes these exist out there
This is the First Gen. Cayenne, just the facelift. 1:57
Old Cayenne's are cheap here in my location. . I didn't bother to ask or research the costs to maintain this, considering people are selling a Porsche for so low.
Where was this taken? That view is stunning

Any update on this car?
Should I get a cayenne for my first car under 15k
Absolutely, I bought my 04, 4 years used and still drive it. New Kenwood updates the tech. If you're big person you will love the seats. It has been reliable with few issues.
What happened to the updates?
I’ve been considering buying one of the base models with a manual transmissions any advice?
When did you buy the 2010?
Interesting series. Your experience might give me the confidence to do the same thing.
just you wait for the new generation ;) its stunning
My father bought one with equivalent 200K usd to buy of this (base model) in China. But I appreciate it nonetheless. The only overpriced things of my family that I personally thought is worthy.
wait till you have to drop that VW VR6 out of the car to change the timing chains! Fun Fun Fun
Do not drive much because I usual bike commute so it will not be commuted often which will result in me having expectant carefree usage, probably more so than they had.
yasssss, I need to get a cayenne for wife
How are getting the same plate on every car in your videos?
Alex Zhang 😂
how is the shoulder room for a 6 foot plus guy? I am definitely considering a V8 model for my wife. I am a mechanic, so most issues are of no concern to me.
Just bought a cayenne. I'm 6'8 260 lbs with wide shoulders. I fit better in this all the other cars I've had. One of the reasons I bought it. I've had it about a month. So far, I love it!
New episode?
you can get a replacement key fob case for 5$ in china. It is worth, since you always have it in your hands!
Volts wagon made a very decent vehicle besides the plastic coolant pipes
GC or used cayenne...I am asking the same question now..or used X5
Happy wife, happy life!
Or just say the hell with it and ditch the wife! 😏
This shares a key fob with the Volkswagen Jetta, they could have at least used a better quality part..
I would think the reliability should be fairly high for the power train as the motor and drive train are not as stressed as they are in other application. Isn't the motor a detuned version of something they put in a 911 or boxster/caymen?
aszrael1266 nope, I think it's a v6
aszrael1266 Interesting. I always forget that Porsche is part of vw
boxster cayman and 911 don't use V6s
I'm pretty sure it doesn't use a VR6...
They do use a derivative of the VR6 actually. In this case, a 3.6L. They are widely called V6s though.
How does a car guy buy a jeep.they are know to be extremely unrelyable.everybody knows that cmon.or maybe your like me i like porsche i know they stuff up and expensive to maintane but i bought it anyway
Take the porsche off road compared to the jeep THEN see which one is overall better! Of course on the road the cayenne would be better!
No way, those things run until 200k, if serviced on time.

I wish Porsche made a 7-seater suv
Where are you driving, looks like the area south of Reno, Nevada? beautiful!
Also Jeeps are fucking trash compared to Porsches! I have a 2012 cayenne and its even 'more nimble' because they shaved 400 lbs off of it! Just go get one of those in S trim and don't look back!
That's where I thought it was too, looks just like Reno area but it's actually SLC.
next can you guys do a long-term review of the Toureg or Tiguan
2009-11 was such a high water mark for every car Porsche built, in terms of reliability and design (I WANT A 2.9 CAYMAN...but nobody sells them because they got one of the best porsches >
sell the jeep!
Just give it another 10k miles, it'll start catastrophically failing. It is the German way!
I never said FCA products were reliable. Lol. From personal experience though, it seems German cars are designed to run perfectly for exactly 100,000 miles.
I really meant more of a catastrophic failure, not minor mechanical problems.
Well built, but I would never forgive myself for buying such an ugly car... Don't sell the Jeep- it looks mile better
Ok, you're comparing it to a Jeep to say it's reliable, errr, please try again.
