  • Joaquín Sorolla was one of the finest painters of color and light the world has seen. His works are admired by artists and collectors alike. He was prodigious throughout his life making hundreds of studies and compositions of all types as well as a sought-after portrait painter. His canvases range from genre subjects to history to plein-air experiments that dazzle the public.

Very well composed narration. The paintings are gorgeous, the shadows are remarkable.

Another great video on one of the masters of painting. For me, Sorolla's "super powers" are his twin talents of draftsmanship and capturing values. Yes, of course he uses color masterfully, but to capture the feeling of light in his paintings-along with J. S. Sargent-an artist must understand the balance between light and dark. To capture the feeling of light in a painting, you must also understand the shadows or darks in contrast. or, to be more accurate, the balance between the darks and lights. That, IMHO, is where Sorolla excels. Then, with his expertise of drawing, his seemingly "dashed off" brush strokes echo the energy of the light. Focused myself on the medium of watercolor, I'd love to see a deeper dive into Sorolla's watercolor technique. This channel is one of the few I look forward to every time a new post appears. Thanks again.

WOW! So many Sorolla's I had never seen before! I love the painting with the girl in the Oleander's. The color and light in the shade is absolutely amazing. I have a big painting of his self-portrait (copy of course) in my studio. Sorolla will always be one of my favorites.

Great video as always. The world would be a very different place if people venerated Sorolla the same way they do Picasso.

Great video. I do think Sorolla considered himself an impressionist though. I think I remembered reading that somewhere.

Sorolla did not consider himself an impressionist, he was much more influenced by Bastien LePage, as he stated. Hope that helps. Check the early Books, not contemporaries. Thanks.

Too bad modern day video technology wasn't available back then. We might have had some amazing art instruction videos by these great painters today!
