- In the first-ever audit of the LAPD helicopter program, the City of Los Angeles Controller's Office found that 61% of its flight time is spent on low-priority incidents, costing L.A. taxpayers nearly 50 million dollars a year.

$50 million dollars, is on 1.56% of LAPD's budget of $3.2 BILLION. That's a drop in the bucket. . . .
That budget could be used to stop homrless and school shooting by hiring security personnels...
If you’re a cop, with no backup, that helicopter arriving before anyone else is a real lifesaver. Keep Air Support. Cut any waste, but keep the mission strong to support the officers on the ground.
😂
U need the protection with all the money u steal from farm workers
Bullcrap! I know the streets and its an ego thing with those damn copters!
Yes that helicopter will help that lone officer by circling and shining the light and watching that lone cop deal with the crooks alone.

there is no doubt they can be used less, or more efficiently. . . 60% low priority flights is a lot of waste. especially when Drones can be used instead now. . .
Ask the Dodgers for money. They can afford it. Not having to pay Ohtani 680 million for another 10 years.
Yep it's a great way for him to dodge er California's jock taxes 13.3% that's pretty much how all the professional athletes have their contracts drawn up who play in California. Even visiting players have pay that . For what payed while in California and other states with jock taxes.
Ask the new lotto winner from altadena, cant belirve he’s still breathing
@@ParkaCagona the lotto is exempt from state taxes
LA Sheriff used to fly the MD 500E and MD 520N NOTAR, but switched to the Airbus H125's the same ones LAPD has. The MD 500 Series are a great helicopter platform, but the the company has had several owners that put a mark on the company. The MD 500 Series is all over the world with civil and military use. The US Army's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) has about 50 MD 530F's or AH-6M / MH-6M and is the only US military service that operates them. The Houston Police, TX has 7 MD 500E's.
Little birds play a different role for SOAR. LAPD doesn’t insert LEOs with their fleet. They are much more a recon observation platform.
Most if not all Law Enforcement Agencies that have air assets, the pilots are cops first with at least of 2 to 5 years of patrol, then get flying training or a FAA license. LAPD's ASD uses a 1999 Bell 412 TwinHuey (N21844) for Special Operations Missions. The LAPD and LA Sheriff do train SWAT to APS (aerial platform shooting) from helicopters.@@speedntktzlastname2182
It is time to act!! Let's not let this tyranny rule our city. These city officials are truly showing us everyday what side they are on.
No one drives 19 million miles.
Tax dollars spent on helicopters = $50 million
Tax dollars spent putting people in prison = $0.00
Sounds like people want crime to go up even more
For the size of that fleet, 50 million is a bargain. Aviation is very expensive. Parts are replaced in hours of operation. Not when they fail. The staff flying and maintaining the aircraft are highly trained and paid as a result. Los Angeles has 470 square miles of land that has to be patrolled. LAPD Air support also provides help to surrounding agencies (Small incorporated cities) that don't have their own helicopters. These elected officials have no idea what they are talking about as usual. Compared to the sobering amount of money spent on the homeless industrial complex and the numerous wasteful projects the city of Los Angeles continues to throw money at. This is nothing. How about we audit how much money has been allocated for the homeless tiny homes and other unhoused programs and then compare that to how much was actually used to remedy the situation. And let's have a press conference about that shall we. This is nothing more than a smoke and mirrors attempt at to reduce the LAPD's budget. And a deliberate attempt to hinder their ability to service the citizens of Los Angeles. All the while supporting and enacting more soft on crime legislation. And passing laws to severely hinder the law abiding's the right to protect themselves.
I bet it would be cheaper to use drones instead of helicopters all you have to do is build drones to be faster like a lm RC car ..
So vehicle pursuits that go over 40mph?
Hard to get a useful searchlight onto a drone
Police Departments all over the country now have expensive SUVs. Wasn't like that in the 1960s.
US army should come in and let LAPD test out their reaper drones
For those who argue that drones could replace helicopters, drones can not keep up the speed and chase that both police cars and helicopters do when going after a suspect. Also, the drone has to be close at all times to the mothership otherwise the drone will end up losing contact, which could be a severe detriment to the mothership vehicle which has to ensure that the drone is not only keeping up with whatever it is chasing, but it too is keeping itself within the range of the drone. Also the use of drones in both public and private space in the US is a highly debated subject and most places, especially in California, ban the use of a drone near private property.
how much a helicopter cost
Millions of dollars being wasted all throughout the L.A County, but find it necessary to keep taking away from cops when crime has been at an all time high. Great logic
Cost of doing business. Prisons may be cheaper.
This is a stupid question. Yes, the helicopter is worth it. The ghetto bird is absolutely an effective tool. It provides additional safety for officers and citizens. But hey, it's LA and California, so let's take one more tool or resource away from the police and give the criminal another advantage. Let's not mention the other functions the police helicopters provide..
This is what defund the police is talking about.
That amount could take care of 2.5 housing challenged people.
We've thrown a sobering amount of money at the homeless industrial complex. And very little return on that investment. 50 million pales in comparison.
@@Flackvest I was being sarcastic. I thought the 2.5 people would have gave it away.
Great so now they're trying to cancel cop helicopters?
They said. They should be used in not every low level situation to avoid costs.
Great more power for criminals. We need to build more jails, have severe laws and enforce them!!!! LA get it together
In LA the cops are the criminals.
@@BennyTherat yes
BTW benny, have you become a flat earther yet? If not I suggest viewing the 13 part series _what on earth happened_ in my about to learn how the earth is not a globe
Better check on sheriff's too they using them like a damn car
“uh-lay”
$ 50 million a year ???... No big deal.... California is facing a 60 billion plus deficit, but the governor's not too concerned obviously. So just keep on flying..... 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
They should switch from the Airbus A-Stars to Robinson R-44s. Fontana PD uses one. Might reduce cost.
Yeah but they have an ASTAR too now
@@flightsimplays SB Sheriff?
@@danielcarlson800 nope, Fontana has one too now, N641EG. It used to be an Ontario chopper with the reg N50NT.
R44? Are you being serious? That thing wont be able to handle the equipments weight and people...
Taxpayers loce bodyguards
That's 14 dollars per person per year, so for a family of 5 that would be 70 dollars a year in taxes. That's a bit too much.
Are you OK with LA spending 3 billion dollars on homeless over the next 5 years after they have already spent millions and the problem just gets worse?
Spinny bois cool. don't defund
No because they are mainly utilized to capture criminals.
The problem is that they’re too loud
So are sirens.
I have EMT training and know that air support helicopters can use up to $5000 an hour
No more la police chase?
Let's make and use police drones instead! We have the technology. Think about that:
For chasing shoplifters : DRONES
For response to car chases: DRONES
For sting operations: DRONES
For responding to illegal fireworks and other small incidents: DRONES
For public address in the air: DRONES
For search and rescue: DRONES
For firefighting tough terrain: DRONES
For visual advantage on underpass and storm washes where transients may start fires or conduct unlawful activity: DRONES
The bigger question is why are we NOT already using them?
This.
Because they could run into the police helicopters, 🙄
Let stop with your first one- most drones that aren't as loud and nearly as big as a manned helicopter can't reach highway speeds. Drones can supplement but can't replace, unless you're living in some dystopic technocratic fantasy.
Make it more cost effective to operate the helicopters by not granting bail to those who should be in jail. Murder? No bail. Crimes against women and children? No bail. DUI? No bail. Assaulting ANY public servant? No bail. It goes on.
The jail and prison "for profit" system is getting fkn old.
I wonder if Newport Beach residents have to deal with the ghetto birds flying over their heads all night long? 😂
Could they use the choppers more efficiently? Sure but they are a much needed part of the overall need to keep crime down and more safely track car pursuits and the one thing these reports never show is how much crime or suspects would have gotten away with out them in the air..
when 60% of flight time is "low priority" they can definitely be used more efficiently, lol.
But they send billions to Ukraine, wtf
The money could be used for homeless!!
There’s your climate change right there not the police but all the other aircraft’s in the air like the ones in there private jets going to a climate change meeting 🤦🏻♂️I mean I agree some of the uses can be stupid just like at any other job people abuse certain things
I wonder how criminals feel about it? 🤷♂😂😂😂😂
So, now these NGOs are going after helicopters? Why dont they go after those who get EBT ? How much does it cost to feed up people with EBT?
Yeap. It's expensive. But they've helped to save many lives.
Lol the climate delusion is going to end the chopper program .
This made happier to pay more taxes.
When I saw the headline I wondered what the big deal was given that Police Helicopters have been a reality all my life ... but from watching the clip I can see how activities like transpiration and ceremonial " flights ... and having 61% of its flights be for "low priority incidents " might indeed be a waste of taxpayer money .
No.They just want to be filling their intimidation on people in Los Angeles otherwise i dont know any other place with such military presence.
Money that could be sent to Israel.
Seventeen aircraft? The UK's National Police Air Service, civering England and Wales, makes do with 23. So, the auditors seem to have done a good job.
I see the ghetto birds out every day. I’m starting to think they’re just cruising around for the view
LAPD should switch to Robinson R-44 or the R-66 police version. Its cheaper to operate and maintain.
This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as U.S. Government Waste.
LAPD flys their helicopter at treetop height at all hours of the night ,shaking the house and shining the light on the windows of people's houses. making a lot of noise.
THEY ARE COMPLETELY USELESS 😂😂😂
Yea stop using it to stalk black areas
Good investment.
Finally someone pointed the finger at the annoying LAPD helicopters 🚁 they fly way too low and respond to the most ridiculous matters. Stick to chasing cars down the streets!
When you get robbed. Keep that same energy up as they use the helicopter to search the area.
When you’re living paycheck to paycheck, even being robbed of $200 is not a “ridiculous matter”
Do you think a helicopter is being used if you get robbed? Get real.
Keyboard warrior ^
Absolutely fu**ing correct!
@@smileymalaiselapd sent a ghetto bird because my girlfriend drank too much wine and was yelling outside, so....?????
& those helicopters we pay for committed criminal invasion of privacy laws up the yin yang in the name of “public safety”? lol no. They need to be more efficient with their helicopter DISPATCHING! Not patrols! Either that or buy another one.
Takes too long to pre check and spool up a helo when it's needed right away.
