- Let's talk about the toothy benefits of using a straw! Have you ever heard that it’s better for your teeth if you’re drinking through a straw? When you drink with a straw, you get a little head-start against acids, sugars, and stain particles from collecting across your front teeth. On the other hand, drinking through a straw after getting your wisdom teeth removed could be a huge no-no (and set you up for a dry socket.) But truth be told, investing in some reusable straws could help you keep your smile healthier and brighter if you use them the correct way! Should you drink with a straw? Let's talk straws!

The fact that you posted this RIGHT as I was about to sip my black tea without a straw. Lemme get up and go get it 😂
:) :) :)
I'm 73 and have been using straws since I was in my early 20's per my dentist's advice. Warning though. I now have what is referred to as smokers lines around my mouth and I have never smoked! I know it's from a lifetime of using straws. Bummer
I'm so glad you posted this! I have been drinking coffee with a straw since I got my braces. But looks like I'll need to stick with after to avoid staining. Also I felt really smart when I guess the last reason for not using a straw during tooth extraction. I have been educating myself on teeth almost every night. So thank you Whitney for sharing your knowledge on RUclips! ❤️😊
yesssss thank you so much for watching! so so so happy to hear you care for your teeth :) wishing you continued health! :)
Perfect timing as I’m making my morning cup of coffee while watching this video. And … my metal straw is within arms reach. It’s never dawned on me to use a straw with my morning coffee. My teeth thank you!
my teeth are WAY less yellow stained after drinking fizzy once a week as a treat, through a straw🙌🏻
I’ve always hated using straws but I’m finally becoming a reusable straw girlie for my teeth 😎
The big problem with using straws all the time is that eventually it will give you smokers lines above your lips.
But really, do straws cause wrinkles?
They can. Constantly pursing your lips could cause your skin to lose collagen and become looser, which is how wrinkles can form. Smokers' lines are named because these types of wrinkles are common in cigarette smokers - since they're often pursing their lips. (Up to 14 times a day on average, according to the CDC.) So if you're doing the same mouthing motion when drinking out of a straw, you could wind up getting smokers' lines too.
What is interesting is that in Third World countries like Honduras they have beautiful teeth where they do no put fluoride in the water.
You're correct. Fluoride is the first world country problem. The corporations don't want to get sued from dumping fluoride to the water, so they made a propaganda to convince the public that fluorine is good for the dental health and safe to drink. No, fluoride is a neurotoxic substance. It's never safe to consume it, no matter how small the amount.
I always swish with water between sips of coffee or bites of fermentable carbohydrates. 😄
I've been using straws for a long while now after my dentist recommended it. It's definitely significantly reduced staining! It's weird for hot drinks, so I try to stick to colder drinks. Of course, this helps in conjunction with brushing-flossing-tongue scraping, mouthwash, etc. 💯
That's when I try to do the water rinse. I currently have a bottle of water next to my coffee. My hygienist would be proud of me😅
I love straws! I had a jaw surgery years ago where I had to use one as a modified pipette years ago when they didn't give flush syringes (I am that old). You hold the end of the straw after dipping it into the liquid food and then let it drop down into the inlet the surgeon left for feeding. I still lost weight in the year between surgery and getting into physio for my mouth but it was well worth it.
i always use glass/metal straws
Coffee Acid and Asthma inhalers will hurt your teeth. As a child never told me to swish and spit after using an inhaler.
YESSS! such great advice
Does Green Tea cause staining too?
yesss and here's my green tea + teeth video: ruclips.net/video/9QS6S1QbEYU/видео.html hope this helps!
I'm 50 yrs old & skiing was part of my life as a child. When I turned 18 I stopped. 25 yrs later I skiied and I was the same. I didn't have to relearn it. Just jump right into it & you'll do 🙂 fine.
NEWSLETTER ALERT! thank you so much for this. truly! I'm really hoping I'll feel the same like you! :) !!!
Great video!
I just stumbled upon your channel.
I’m not sure if you’ve covered these yet. Thought I’d ask
Question: is it an effective way to soak your toothbrush in mouthwash for like 5 min to disinfect it? Someone said to do this when they are sick.
Question 2: tooth pain when menstruating. What’s that about? It kind of feels like nerve pain and the pressure when you’re getting a tooth extracted…but the “pain” isn’t bad. Can brush and floss as usual. “Pain” only occurs when eating
thank you for being here! I have videos on both those topics -- hope they help!

You’re amazing my friend
you are!!! thank you!
I’ve been using a straw to drink coffee 🥤for YEARS in order to preserve my lipstick 💄💋and now that I have adult braces I especially want to keep my teeth nice!👄
🎉yay I’m not a baby for using a straw!😊. I felt so bad because I have a hard time just drinking out of a cup sometimes
I read studies that the back of the teeth can get cavities while using straw... but placing the straw waaay to the back might solve this by bypassing all the teeth?
tomorrow I have a tutorial coming out on Instagram with where to place it!!! but, yes! it sounds like you know already :) try to bypass the teeth!
I had tried paper straws , I got a few stainless
Ban a plastic straw but it' no problem if the drink is served in plastic cup and lid. Yeah that really makes sense.
(To answer your question in your newsletter today) I’m down to go skiing/ snowboarding whenever! We just need snow lol
NEWSLETTER ALERT: snow is coming tonight!
New subscriber.. such an entertaining channel :)
thank you for being here!!!
DOK, what is the best straw to use. Love ur vlog.
Does the shape of the straw make a big difference? I've seen some that are supposed to protect your teeth more, but they're pricey.
How important is it to wait 30 min before brushing after drinking coffee. I swish with water multiple times during drinking coffee and after. However, I have to brush right away to minimize the out time of my Invisalign. I make sure I keep them in for 22h/day even though they recommend 20-22.
Question, would the non added sugar juice to dilute with water (cordial/squash) that has like no calories sugar etc. damage your teeth without a straw?
I'd guess yes, though *I'm no expert* , as it still contains sugar and acids.
Story time: My nephew was allowed to fall asleep with a bottle of formula. He lost so many teeth!! 😔
good
What about lattes?
For those who use a reusable water bottle: certain CamelBak water bottles have straws!
Unfortunately, I had 2 implants in less than a year. I was advised Not to use a straw ever?
Peace love teeth. Thank you
PLT! thank YOU!
Great video, happy Tuesday.🦷🪥😁
thank you for watching! happy Tuesday!!!!
I’m just commenting for the algorithm. Don’t mind me
lol THANK YOU! :)
Will it be still be okay . I have been waiting my teeth
You're so amazing ❤❤❤

I love her Chicago accent, maybe Minnesota, at least Midwest
I believe she's mentioned in a live video that she's from Chicago.
@@Teal_Blastoise I think I remember that live video too. But some parts of this video sounded like my Minnesota ex lol
@@SteveVi0lence oh. I see.
Very good I do it
my gums on my right tooth on top is hurting me and feels weird idk why. the gums feel sore. :( and oh ya i always buy iced coffee from starbucks haha.
So i should probably use a straw for the electrolyte powder i got that has citric acid (no sugar) and is super strong? Or is it fine as long as i dont brush for awhile
I like to use a straw anyways because it’s easier for me to drink beverages with straws, this is encouraging me to use a straw more
How long do you use a straw before replacing it ?
Just get a stainless steel one
If you need to use one, just get a stainless steel one. Those plastic and paper straws (chemically loaded) aren't good for our body and planet.
yessss
PEACE LOVE TEETH 🦷 🧡🪥💚💝💖🌈
PLT :) !!!
Hello, quick question. What would you recommend to people who have had poor dental hygiene and haven't had regular dental visits say to their dentist? Embarrassing admission but I haven't been able to afford to go to the dentist until recently and have really poor dental hygiene (until today anyway).
I just wanted to say I went to the dentist for the first time in 16 years a few months ago and I'm so glad! My gums are in really bad shape and I'm sure if I left it another year i would be losing a lot of teeth. I just explained I was nervous and they honestly don't to care after giving you a lil reminder that they recommend 6 monthly check ups for a reason. Good luck!
Check to see if you have any dental schools in your area. The students perform the work while supervised by their dentist professors. The cost is usually minimal. You get care for less, and they get experience...win-win!
Funny video. 😁
I heard straws gives you wrinkles
I've had a few DMs asking about this on Instagram! I need to look into this further!! 🧐
They do. It's the same motion smokers use when they inhale. Personally, I'd rather keep my teeth 😂.
Straws are the best! Definitely help so much I do that same routine! 🦷🪥🪥🦷🦷🪥🦷🦷🪥🪥🦷🦷🪥🪥🦷🦷🪥🪥🦷🦷🪥🪥🦷🦷🪥🪥🦷🪥🪥🪥🦷🦷🪥🪥🦷🦷🪥🦷💝🤎💙💕💜💜💕❤️❤️💞❤️🩹🖤💚💚🖤🌈🤎💙💕💜💕💙❤️❤️❤️🩹💛🧡🤍💓💓🤍💛💛💗❤️🩹💞💜💜💕💙🌈🌈🖤🖤🌈🌈💙❤️❤️💞
