      Is there any strong monitor arm for Dell 49” wide monitor?

  • @Felix_EN
    @Felix_EN 2 года назад +487

    Another mistake is clamping the arm to a cheap desk from the likes of Ikea, which is a thin layer of laminate sandwiching a honeycomb of cardboard. Clamping a small surface area to these desks will result in a disaster.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 2 года назад +27

      It shouldn't - the outer 4-5cm where monitor arms clamp on are solid wood particle board, only the middle is paper honeycomb. But it's probably best to clamp near a reinforcement spar that runs alongside the leg mounts, to make it less inclined to warp the desk over time. However you can't use grommet hole mount, and you should think very carefully if you're using bolt-through in order to be squarely in the structural material of the desk, of which there isn't much at all.
      Then again it's best to think twice about buying that sort of desk surface to begin with. It can be inevitable under cost pressure, and it's easy to carry home weighing typically under 12kg at the largest size and often under 8kg, but it's somewhat unpleasant, amplifying every keyboard noise and such.

      I have one of these Ikea desks and had seen reports of heavy monitor and arm combos breaking off, so I went to Home Depot and bought a pair of 16-ga galvanized steel electrical covers for a whopping THREE DOLLARS and used them as pads on the top and bottom of the desk under the dual-monitor arms base and clamp disk.
      This especially spreads the force of the disk out from a 2" circle to a 35 sq. in. (5x7) rectangle allowing you to really crank it down tight while the plates sandwich the desk and distribute the force. After 3-1/2 years holding two 27" displays, it's rock steady.

      What kind of desk should I buy then? I was thinking of going for IKEA for my setup....

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 2 года назад +4

      @@nyaa104 Well one option is to get a solid kitchen countertop surface instead. Even the IKEA ones are 100% particle board on the inside, solid, no voids. Or just go to a home improvement store and stare at their wood, they'll have all kinds, they'll have desk surfaces, they'll have countertops, they have them as particle board, they have them also as glued laminated timber, which is nice. You can use IKEA legs and stuff but you'll need to mark out and predrill the holes yourself. You can have the home improvement store cut it to length for you and seal the cut edge, or they'll sell you the edge separately and you just iron it on.
      IKEA desks come as 60cm deep (usually), 70 and occasionally 80cm. IKEA countertops are 63.5cm deep. Home improvement store countertops and desk surfaces can be 60, 63.5 and 70cm, at least here in EU.
      Also only the cheapest of IKEA desk surfaces are hollow inside, they make solid ones as well. Linnmon and now Lagkapten are hollow, i think the others are not, maybe ask them.

    I suggest using a metal plate with the arm to increase stability and to protect from clamp damage. It really reduced the monitor bounce I experience with an ultra wide while typing.

    • @necrojoe
      @necrojoe 2 года назад +6

      Sometimes just using a metal plate, especially if it's painted/powder coated, can skate around. Most nicer monitor arms have a thin, maybe 1/6th (1.5-2mm) thick, hard, grippy rubber on the bottom of the base. Not something so soft that it compresses and causes bounce issues, but just rubbery enough to prevent indentations, while still holding secure. This rubber *can* sometimes leave marks on the top, though, which is a bit of a bummer, but if it's natural wood, that spot is likely going to fade at a much different rate than the rest of the top, so the color wouldn't match anyway. 😅

    One of the things with the weight limits on monitor arms is that it's only holding the panel, and often a significant amount of the mass of the monitor is in the stand part, rather than the panel.
    For example, I've got a 34" Acer Predator WQHD (3440 - 1440 21:9 aspect ratio), which claims to be 14kg, on a Silverstone Monitor arm which has a weight limit of 10kg. My absolute favorite dual-monitor arms are the style with one heavier-duty arm, and a crossbar. You mount both monitors to the same cross bar, so they are always aligned and the spacing is locked, no matter where you reposition them. I can pull the monitors towards me, push them back, turn them to the side for easy info sharing with a guest, all with one hand on the grab bar at the bottom. An example of this would be the Humanscale M8.1 with Crossbar.
    If I needed to move both of my monitors individually, then I would much rather have two single arms, rather than one double like those included in this video.

    I already knew all of this stuff, but it was great to see a video cleanly and concisely going over all of it like this, with examples! Great video!
    I wonder if any ultrawide mount systems use two wide gas/spring-arm clamps to avoid focusing all the leverage on that single point. You'd need a minimum desk width, but a system that floated between two arms would still provide most of the benefits of a mounting system, provided you have the right type of desk.
    Also important to note, monitor arm systems on something like an IKEA desk are especially prone to failure because of the uneven pressure placed on the desk surface that attacks the weakness of the desk's construction.

    Bought a dual hydraulic arms stand for two 32° screens on amzn for about 70-80€ I think and it's good. However with one of my monitors it's at it's limit. On that particular monitor the Vesa mount isn't in the middle but at the bottom for whatever reason... when I want to stack the monitors one over the other while tilting the heavier one a bit down it gets too much. It's an omen 32° screen if someone wants to know and these are on the heavier side. My other 32° screen is from Dell and curved which hasn't that problem. Glad the reviews weren't fake for it and it wasn't that expensive in the end. Now I've got a new desk and two of those "static" mounts which are on the expensive side. They feel more robust but they're the kind which you can't easily tilt or rearrange without disassembling the whole thing...

    Can you please tell me how deep is your desk in this video? I want to buy a desk but I'm afraid it will be too deep (any length will fit in my room). Yours looks pretty good and comfortable. Thanks.

    "Can Damage Some Softer Surfaces" Yeah, and also, can mess up a desk that's not solid enough! XD I believe you would cover that here, but maybe you have another video to recommend a. specific tabletop/desktop or b. means to reinforce one's desk to avoid problems.
    PS. Evidently, not talking about "making it work with an IKEA Linnmon/honeycomb", but still. Very important topic, especially with heavier monitors or lighter tabletop.

    I had to use a monitor arm. I have a 43" main screen and a 32" portrait secondary monitor. With the standard feet on my BFGD the monitor just sits too far forward, and with the feet being so low I couldnt put anything under the monitor either. I got the most heavy duty gas arm I could find for it which is rated to take the weight of the monitor. It holds it fine however unfortunately the monitor tilts forward even though its *just* within spec for the arm. I had to wedge something underneath it between the monitor and my USB interface sitting under the monitor, to prop it back into position.

    Additional space behind the desk? You can swivel the middle so it sits flush against the back of the desk. WHO would have the bend pointing straight out the back in the first place?

    The reason I want to get monitor arms is cause I'm 6'4 and even with my chair on lowest and my desk on highest I still end up looking down at my monitors, while I'm tempted to get one arm for all 3 monitors I've realized that I'll want 2 arms, one for 2 monitor and one for the other 1, all are 22 inch and fairly light but I already have my camera mounted in the middle of the desk. My question is do you know any long arms that support both dual and single monitor and is very hight adjustable?

    Usually when a monitor doesnt have vesa mounts its and older model (usually. I know there are a few newer and nicer monitors that dont for usually dumbass reasons).
    Instead of super gluing it on. Take the back panel off (its just clipped in) and put the bracket on the middle and mark the holes. Push bolts through those holes (from the inside out) and put the back panel back on the monitor. Now the monitor will attatch to the vesa mount with those bolts. Just use matching nuts to secure it.
    Ive dont this 50 times and never had an issue. Its not as pretty but its functional. Which is what i think is more important anyway.

    Great content. It made me step back from mounting my monitors on arms. There is a reason why an Apple stand is at $ 1k: it's not easy or cheap to make a heavy monitor completely adjustable yet compact and stable. It may still be overpriced but it gets the point.

    1:27 There's a clear reason... Greed
    1) Manufacturers will do anything to save a few pennies.... Less machining time and less metal structure inside the monitor's case = more profit
    2) Manufacturers may omit a VESA mount, to direct customers to their more-expensive monitors.

    Hey thanks for the video, I had to buy a monitor arm last year and ended up with the amazon basic for around 99 €. What Iam missing is an advise about one or two good monitor arms for single monitors/double. Isnt there THE monitor arm to hold them all - stable? How is the ollie from HM?

    • @btodtv
      @btodtv  2 года назад +2

      You can use a single or dual monitor arm, depending on your needs and budget. I like the simplicity of the dual arm system, since it is a cleaner look where it attaches to the desk. We haven't used that arm, but plan to take a closer look at them in the future -GK

    Does the middle joint of the arm not turn far enough to allow it to be over the desk surface (left or right) instead of sticking out over the back of the desk? I've seen arms on Amazon that do that, so you don't need space behind the desk. (For single monitor arms.)

    Space for the Arm behind the desk is NOT necessary. at least when they have a rotating pint in the middle. u can always rotate and change the direction to the side from your mount and not behind the desk. this way thee arm denst snake back behind the desk and forward... it snakes more from left to right or other way round. bu it works exactly the same.
    for this to work u will need to adjust your bad station is some cases to make it work with both monitor arms but. dont elt yourself stop that because of space behind the desk.
