What would be quite cool, is if the humans became technologically advanced. Therefore, they forget about the Gods and then you can punish them with natural disasters and stuff like that.

First game had it so that if you make a city grow too fast, without enough danger around them or enough natural things that are awe inspiring, they got greedy and demanded more and more, got aggressive towards their neighbours and the gods if their greed isn't fueled further, and would even go to war against the titans and other cities!
