It is so funny, always when I get new head phones, ear buds, speakers, etc... I'm coming back here to listening this amazing cover! This guy still rocking!
Playing the Guitar for 38 years myself, I never appreciated the Bass part. I don't know what brought me to this video today ... but you opened my eyes. This was educating ... MAN, you are fantastic !!!
I've always found it interesting how ABBA songs have strong basslines that make up a large part of the overall sound of the band and how when performing live, the bass player was in the wings, or even in one tv appearance, the bass player sat on the end of the front row of the crowd! Top video as always, definitely one of the best technical players on RUclips! :D
But respect that they had enough guts a faith in it to keep that part extended. So many times I hear songs and they are afraid to "go over" and the cut a great segment short for time or whatever reason when it should have been longer. One comes to mind is Seal's "Crazy" heard clear on album version, there is a small segment with a powerful african drums. When I hear that it frustrats me because they treat it as a throw away. I would have centered a song around it. One thing I like about rap (one of the few things) is that they would find a segment thrown away and do just that: make a whole song out of it
This is nice to hear. Songs where you can hear the bass so great! I hate it that they turn it down in songs. It's so nice to hear the bass. Great to boogie on :p!
Don’t be. Practice. Break it down into the individual parts. You’ll get it. It took me years to learn the chorus of This Charming Man by the Smiths. The verse I worked out in an hour when I was 15 but couldn’t get the rest. Practice looked at tabs and listened.
I know this comment is 5 years old but if you haven't already learnt a few Bernard Edwards baselines (bassist on chic, sister sledge etc etc) you absolutely should!
Heard this song for the first time in years and that bass line slaps, so I had to find a video of someone covering the bass. Not disappointed. The bass is such an under appreciated instrument and by far my favorite.
Paul Bruton It came as a surprise to me. He lives in Sweden still and he emailed me when I was researching my article on ABBA bassists. Google 'The Bassists of Abba' and you can see the article. Mike was very helpful. I only wish I could have got in touch with Rutger.
Luke McKELVEY I can't scan an email in a youtube comment - I can say that someone who contacted me on Facebook put me in touch with Mike Watson. I can verify the email address as it matched his website. Specifically about this track, Mike confirmed he played on Gimme, Gimme Gimme (and corrected me that Rutger, not he, played bass on Fernando). He said he used his 1966 Jazz bass which he bought second hand in 1970. He had changed the pickups to Schecter at this time. Mike also confirmed there were no charts at the sessions. If you google Mike, he has a website (in Swedish and English) and you can contact him through the site. You can see my article by googling Abba Bassists if you're interested. You can email me through my website.
Sounds great with the low E. FINALLY found a version on youtube that sounds like it plays the bass line correctly. Just love this vid man, fantastic. This is my wifes song, I can finally start learning to play it correctly.
I read that the bass was not played by Rutger Gunnarson in the recording but by Mike Watson "Little Mike", and that he also used a "1966 Jazz bass with Schecter pickups".
video quality 480p, music quality 8K!
Fr, the audio is so crisp
It is so funny, always when I get new head phones, ear buds, speakers, etc... I'm coming back here to listening this amazing cover! This guy still rocking!
Doing the same thing right now!
UPDATE: legend says trucidio(name 1/1/2023) still hear this song after getting headphones, earbuds, speaker etc

There are some true artists in this world. Thank you for bringing joy to so many of us. You are very much appreciated. Thank you.

Julia Hofer does it much better. Search RUclips for 'Top 5 ABBA Bass Lines Julia Hofer'. She IS s the master of ABBA bass lines!

I once read one idiot journo describe Abba's songs as having 'plodding basslines.' Fool.
I've been wanting to learn how to play the bass for 30 years. This video has inspired me to buy one and learn how to play it NOW. (It's that awesome.)
Danielsan B How is your bass playing going?

If there's a video on RUclips that makes the most powerful case for mixing a more prominent bass sound in Pop/Rock music, it's this one.
Eargasm!
i didnt know ABBA¨S bass lines were so fuckin killer , better than most greedy bands
In know...that e string is killing it
Allbbrz Nope......written by Mike Watson and last time I see him he looked as white as Swedisch snow!
+Allbbrz Whats up with that racial comment, dude?

This is pure real quality pop Swedish style...None of that over produce fake crap from today and I'm a rock, blues, metal guy....
Damn!! That's funky as hell! As a novice bassist, I'm very excited and very intimidated.
The bass lines of ABBA ( disco band) are surprisingly the most badass ones
Keep practicing, you got this! :)
@@migueltrotski6622 funky bass is one of the foundations of disco

Oh wow, never really realized how great this bass line was, especially with you playing it! Keep up the amazing work
Just amazing playing and tone. I wonder why the bass is never mixed more like this on original versions of songs? Adds such a dimension.
정말 멋지다 기가막히네 ㅇ베이스 기타가 저렇게 멋지군요

This bass went very crazy! The best version.
I would say that this is one the best bass line cover for this Abba's song
Certainly the most entertaining and skillful bass cover the "I" have seen to date. Thanks for sharing!
Great to listen and watch someone playing different music than what I'm used to listen!

Just got confirmation from Mike Watson that he played the orignal bassline on this and created it live in the studio with ABBA.

such a great performance for this very complexe song, especially from 2:52 to 3:53
You can use that part for an instruction video on how to kick ass with slap&pop.

Excellent Bass as I heard. Great !!!!
I read that the bass was not played by Rutger Gunnarson in the recording but by Mike Watson "Little Mike", and that he also used a "1966 Jazz bass with Schecter pickups".
I like how it seems effortless to him. Just small and precise right hand mouvements. Great cover ✌️
