Scott, your video is the only one I found that notes that the washer goes inside the hub. I lost track of whether it was inside or out. You saved me a ton of trouble. Thanks a bunch!
Glad I could help I also have this re-uploaded without the music on another video if you need to watch it again. This was one of my first videos and I had the music too high
Wow..When I saw the landscape and especially Kirin beer design, I know it's Taipei! I miss alot there. Now I am struggling with my mavic wheel in Helsinki and no mountain in here.. Thanks for the video!
Just encountered this issue with an older set of Mavics on a 26er I'm rebuilding. Thought the noise was in the 1x conversion, but this solved it. Thanks again!
Thanks. I finally found a diagram - no longer the case but in the past it was industry standard for the threads to be exposed and "in" the dropout. Potential for the threads to be damaged, I suppose, but at least my hub is assembled correctly. - Best, Andy
I used cl-1 chain lube instead of shimano break oil. I haven’t ridden it yet, but I’m excited to see how it goes. The difference will probably just be how long it lasts
It's great to see and have some information before you do this kind of maintenance work. I also would like to know more about how to service the ball bearings or when to replace them. Great video however the background music was very loud and disturbing. Thanks for sharing.
Jeez the music is too loud... we can't even hear you talking at some point. Other than that, decent video. What about the bearings, do you have to lubricate / replace them ? and how do you tell if whichever is needed ? Thanks !
ya... i stopped, checked things out.,. figured it was bearings or something. Thing is, when it's the freehub its ok... just don't 'freewheel' on the way home and you will make it.... aka.... keep pedalling.
Search for the pdf... Something like this... tech.mavic.com/tech-mavic/technical_manual/data/mavic_tech.php?display=product&family=1010&subfamily=1051¯onu=21710
I tried un threading the drive side nut with two five mil allen wrenches. I thought that I would break one of the allen wrenches. It is so tight, obviously from the factory. I was still able to clean and lube the pawls but it would have been much better if they had not tightened it so much at the factory.
Thanks for the video. On the non-drive side (Ksyrium Equipe S) are the axle threads supposed to be exposed? Mine are but I wonder if it was reassembled incorrectly?
it was one of my first videos.. .. sorry, re-uploaded with audio fixed...search for the same video with the (audio fixed) added.. ruclips.net/video/R09IA02kll8/видео.html
Thanks for the video! I got the same wheels. Appart from the freehub, there also bearings inside the "axis" or "core" (I dont know the translation) of the wheel that can also be clea ed and lubricated, right?
1) Great video, thanks. 2) Coincidentally, I'm having the exact same problem, and have the exact same wheelset you do. How's this fix working for you now that it's been a bit? Deciding between this and just buying a new freehub altogether.
Had 4 50km rides... Sound is gone. I have been doing high speed downhills as well... As long as the white inside seal is ok, should be the fix. Just used brake cable fluid. Lbs just gave it to me for free.
I have done it before myself and it took well over 10,000 km before the grinding sound started again, so the service is well worth it, plus it's satisfying to fix it yourself, as you will see it is actually not a big deal and saves a lot of money. It just needs refreshing through vids like this how to tighten it again, because this hub works differently than a Shimano one and you don't want to ruin it or fastening shut the rotation :) So be careful when applying the method to a different hub, even slightly different year model can have a different approach.
Make your life easier and get rid of that plastic bushing. Hubdoctor sells a ceramic bearing conversion kit (comes with both inner and outer bearings). Gets rid of the freehub play as well. I bought a slightly used set of Cosmic Carbone SLRs and it was the first thing I did. They sell replacement pawl springs as well that are much more stiff, so it clicks way louder. In total I probably spent about $60 off of ebay.
@@scottrider7271 What is the cause of the grinding noise? Mine started grinding, so I ended up rebuilding the whole freehub, but I didn't oil/grease inside the freehub. Maybe I should pull it out and oil it.
Just the standard freehub. There may be various versions but the general principal is similar. In regards to the oil, I am not sure of it's product code.. it is the Shimano brake fluid oil. The bike shop just gave me it for free.
Great video. I have the elite like you. Thanks. Just my opinion, I had a little difficulty hearing everything over the backround music. Just constructive criticism. Thanks again.
Ya, I made the video too quickly. I noticed in a few places the speech as hard to make out, but The main points were made ... so I left it. With youtube you can't edit the audio after so... it is what it is.
Anyone know if the sealed bearings are serviceable (remove seal, clean, fresh grease, reseal)? Or better to just pop them out (somehow) and replace with new ones?
@@scottrider7271 serviceable! Just finished doing it and worth it! Haven’t been touched since I bought them new in ‘06/7! Have learned a lot about sealed bearings the last two days!
They actually are serviceable. You have to remove them first (several videos to do that) without messing them up. You can pop out the seals with a razor underneath (careful not to bend the seals). I washed and removed the old grease by washing them in Simple Green and a toothbrush, rinsed, and used compress air to displace whatever water is left. I used a hair dryer to make sure they're nice and dry. There are some hub grease out there, e.g. Phil Wood, Park tools (kinda thick), etc. Pack the bearings and put the seals back. Careful you don't want to press the seals down too tightly 'cause they can rub against the bearing cage (ask me how I know).
update... its been about 2 years since I last did the freehub... it may be acting up again... can't guarantee when I will get in there... but maybe next week
well, I just used tri flow instead of mineral oil and road 6 miles with zero issues. If anyone wants to know how it worked in the long run, let me know. Thanks for the vid.
Scott, your video is the only one I found that notes that the washer goes inside the hub. I lost track of whether it was inside or out. You saved me a ton of trouble. Thanks a bunch!
This video saved me a massive headache. Changed bearings multiple times and finally found this. Boom.
Glad I could help I also have this re-uploaded without the music on another video if you need to watch it again. This was one of my first videos and I had the music too high
Well done, Scott! I've looked at a bunch of videos on the topic and yours was the most informative and succinct. You rule, my Man!
Thanks, it was one of my first videos so the music was a bit high I think though
Wow..When I saw the landscape and especially Kirin beer design, I know it's Taipei! I miss alot there. Now I am struggling with my mavic wheel in Helsinki and no mountain in here.. Thanks for the video!
Well, if u ever come back let's go for a ride
Great vid Scott. Love the tunes and the Bar Beer can in the background...best way to do some maintenance.
You got that right!
Great vid. Found this easier to follow than some of the GCN vids!
Thanks man

Thanks for posting Scott, really useful video

cool man...
Thanks a lot Scott. Big help brother.
No probl..I also made another video exactly the same but better audio if you had a hard time with the music being too loud in that one.
Great video; got me sorted in almost real time!
glad it helped...
I used cl-1 chain lube instead of shimano break oil. I haven’t ridden it yet, but I’m excited to see how it goes. The difference will probably just be how long it lasts
if it is too thick it may not spin well.. could be ok... might as well try, can't really hurt anything.
Appreciate this, thank you!
No problem... and I also have that same video posted again with the audio fixed... music was too loud in the first one...
Nice video. Thanks for taking time to post.
thanks man!

ya... i did the video again with lower sound if you search my videos.... it was one of my first and the music was too loud
It's nothing wrong with making mistakes as long as we learn from it and get better. Keep up the good work.
Perfekt. Thank you.
I uploaded another version with the music turned down...
ruclips.net/video/R09IA02kll8/видео.html

No problemo

thank You mate
You're welcome!
nice video bro thank you
Thanks... Think I've watched a few of yours as well
i uploaded a remake of the
video without the music (was too loud)
Good job 👍
Thanks 👍
If I heard or felt grinding the first thing I would be looking at would be the bearings👍🏻🔧
ya... i stopped, checked things out.,. figured it was bearings or something. Thing is, when it's the freehub its ok... just don't 'freewheel' on the way home and you will make it.... aka.... keep pedalling.
Yes - I have had a good look around the web but it is a discontinued item so not a lot of good pics. I haven't found a definitive photo yet.
well, look for mavic forums or manuals online. let me know what u find.
tq Scott
No problem dood
My mavic ksyrium rear hub just starting making noises when coasting down hills. I will try this out. Thanks for the video.
Good luck. Just remember to use like a brake fluid oil not a grease
Hi, Scott, I need to replace this "yellow" seal (minute 5:43) from my Mavic Ksyrium Exalith Pro 2016. Do you have the part number for that? Thanks,

glad u got it unlocked.... make sure to grease the threads before tightening again... maybe they were corroded?
They used thread lock on the threads@@scottrider7271

Good question. The equipe may be a bit different. You Google images on net?
Can you take the music off so I can hear everything you are saying. You are the only person doing this. Great.
I wish my hearing was better.

I pity the underside of that hub when it was on the tiles being rocked back and forth.
My mistake on that one but yeah they're my second Wheels I should practice a little more care...
Thanks for the video! I got the same wheels. Appart from the freehub, there also bearings inside the "axis" or "core" (I dont know the translation) of the wheel that can also be clea ed and lubricated, right?
Yes, I haven't had to replace them yet. Likely soon, been a few years
1) Great video, thanks.

@@scottrider7271 Great, thanks man!
Apparently this is common, and I will likely do it every 6 months or so... The freehub likely wasn't lubed in years... Lol
@@scottrider7271 Yeah let's see I got these wheels in 2011, so the last time they would have been lubed... uh.. let's see here... Yep, 2011. 😅

I will likely try that out next time, thanks for the advice. It's running fine for now,
what about the spacer washer between freehub and wheel body?
I left the freehub on the wheel, didn't have to pull it off to fix my problem. May have to soon though since these wheels are almost dead.
what's the purpose of putting hydraulic oil in the freehub?
It had essentially dried up and there was a grinding noise so that helps lubricate when you're in Free wheel mode
@@scottrider7271 What is the cause of the grinding noise? Mine started grinding, so I ended up rebuilding the whole freehub, but I didn't oil/grease inside the freehub. Maybe I should pull it out and oil it.
Yeah it's just less friction you know also stops from corrosion as well.
OK, so what we're gonna need for the freehub service:
1. A can of beer..
..
:)
Actually, it's more like a 4 beer job
what kind of Mavic Freehub cand be used with Oil L9961360?

Hi, yo tengo una pregunta, la rueda de mi bicicleta es mavic y cuando giro los pedales hacia atrás la rueda gira también. Porque?

Can I have the size of a washer please?
You'll have to check a schematic from Mavic. I'm not going to open it up just to measure it... Did you lose yours or something?

50 miles, no more squealing.
tks for the info... figured it would work
Just making sure: do not drink the mineral oil? 😀
You never know with people these days...
The mavic freehubs SUCH a let down lol
Yeah they're a bit sloppy, but they don't do that bad of a job... you just got to keep on them
Cut the distracting music and you've got a great video.
Yeah I know it was one of my first I actually re-uploaded it in another version with better audio...
great video ! but music way too loud !!! i can barely can hear you
