    This video will show you how to run the 'Hiren's BootCD 15.2' from a USB flash drive.
    The download for the .zip file is:
    www.hirensbootc...
    My other video on 'How to create and use the Hiren's BootCD 15.2' can be found here:
    • How to create and run ...
    My other video on 'How to remove a Windows Password using the Hiren's BootCD 15.2' can be found here:
    • How to remove a Window...
    More information and a complete list of all the utilities on the 'Hiren's BootCD 15.2' can be found on this website:
    www.hiren.info/...
    The first download link used in this video for 'USB Disk Storage Format' is:
    www.hiren.info/...
    [For some reason, this link doesn't appear to work in Internet Explorer. However, is does work in any other web browser]
    The second download link used in this video for 'grub4dos' is:
    download.gna.or...
    The third download link used in this video for 'grub4dos installer 1.1' is:
    download.gna.or...
    The 'Hiren's BootCD 15.1 is functional with windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7 and linux (but not Mac).
    Only use this troubleshooting guide if your USB Flash drive can not be booted by entering the boot menu on your computer by pressing the allocated key (which is clearly listed on the bottom of your screen when you turn on most computers). The most common keys for boot menu are 'F8' and 'F12'.
    Troubleshooting: set your computer to boot from USB Flash Drive.
    To Enter the BIOS press the 'Del' button on your keyboard or, depending on the type of bios, one of these alternatives: 'F1', 'F2', 'F8', 'F10' 'F12', 'insert' or 'tab'. Commonly, a PC will show a message like 'Press Del to enter Setup' to indicate that you need to press the 'Del' key. Some AMI BIOS require you to enable the option 'USB Keyboard Legacy support'.
    For AMI BIOS (follow steps 1 or 2 depending on your BIOS type):
    1. Go to 'Feature Setup'. 'Enable' these options: 'USB Function Support', 'USB Function For DOS' and 'ThumbDrive for DOS'. Go to 'Advanced Setup'. Set the '1st Boot Device' to 'USB RMD-FDD'. Reboot the PC and it now should automatically boot from the USB flash drive without you having to select it from the boot menu.
    2. Go to 'USB Mass Storage Device Configuration'. Select 'Emulation Type' and set it to 'Harddisk'. Go to the 'Boot Menu' and set the '1st boot device' to 'USB-Stick'. Exit the BIOS and save the changes.
    For PHOENIX/AWARD BIOS (my laptop's BIOS):
    Go to 'Advanced BIOS Features'. Go to the '1st Boot device' and set it to 'USB-ZIP'. The key is 'F2' on my particular laptop.

    Thank you soooo much. I'm a computer repair tech and i can't begin to tell you how many people leave passwords on thier computer and it's hard to test like that. Now that some computers don't have an ODD i needed a way to do this from flash. You have the most detailed way to do this and it 100% worked. Again thank you

    @SKEPCUNT Great to hear that it worked. I have never done this myself, but try these 3 methods to see if they work.
    1. Start>Control Panel>Uninstall a Program>Choose 'grubinst'/'grubinst gui' from the list and uninstall it. If there is no entry for it, move on to method 2.
    2. Run 'grubinst_gui.exe' again by double-clicking on it to see if the setup acts as an uninstaller as well (they often do). If it doesn't, move on to method 3 (continued in the next comment)

    @xImistar In addition, don't forget that your boot menu button may not be F12. Every motherboard/BIOS is different so you may need to press a different button to open the boot menu and/or the BIOS settings. Simply look at the bottom of your screen when you turn your computer on and look for the buttons that you have to press to open the boot menu and/or BIOS setup. Common buttons that correspond to the boot menu include: F8, F12 and the escape (Esc) key.

    @Musicarta oh dear....just a FYI note, older computers that can boot usb may have issue with grub or the stuff on hirens cd like the mini xp (I have such a computer) -- just incase you run into anyone saying it won't work/boot. The work around is either boot via cd (which as been standardize for a long time) or boot plop from cd or floppy and choose to boot from usb in the menu (plop's usb driver works well when the bios' usb support sucks)

  • @Musicarta
    @Musicarta  12 лет назад

    It depends upon what kind of boot problem you're having, but potentially, yes, this CD can fix many kinds of boot errors.

    @mindreader1975 I'm glad that you got it to work in the end. Tell me, was the second download that you omitted the Grub4Dos. If so, I'm surprised that you managed to get it to work without it. Good job! Anyway, I'm glad you made good use of the Hiren's BootCD.

    @olivox I don't know. I have never tried it that way but what I can say is that using usb disk storage format is the advised way of doing this and I know it works perfectly, so I advise that you use it. It's a very small program so there is no reason not to use it.

    RMPrepUSB can be used to partition, format and install grub4dos very easily. Then just copy over the HBCD files and add a menu.lst. Job done!
    You can even follow a tutorial on the RMPrepUSB tk website to boot directly from an ISO file on a USB drive.

    @ALIASADist Of course! =) Any bootable cd will work on a desktop PC if it works on a laptop too. They are no different, as long as they both have a USB flash drive (in this case) or a CD drive.

    @samuelhmar Norton Ghost is no longer on this version (13.2) of that Hiren's BootCD. However, there is an alternative: G4L Ghost 4 Linux 0.34a
    a hard disk and partition imaging and cloning tool similar to Norton Ghost.
    I hope this helps/solves your problem.

    @85alexpr I believe this means that the USB Flash Drive is in a sort of read-only type of format so you cannot change it's format for the purposes required to make the Hiren's BootCD. Try this. If it doesn't work, tell me and I will try to reply back with another solution:
    1. Open Start Menu >> Run, type regedit and press Enter, this will open the registry editor.
    2. Navigate to the following path:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
    (Continued below).

  • @Musicarta
    @Musicarta  13 лет назад

    @Lilrhyme88 There are several things you can try:
    Type --skip-mbr-test into the Extra box (about half way down) on the Grub4DOS GUI Installer screen (at 8:26 on the video) and then try to install it. Try this method first. It should work.
    If you have Vista, you can "clean" the flashdrive and try installing Grub4DOS again. Note: This procedure will erase all files on the flashdrive. In Windows 7, you can try to reformat it (in the same format, just to remove all files cleanly).

    @Lilrhyme88 That message is only telling you that the partition table is "nonstandard" in some way. Grub4Dos checks that all partitions start and end on cylinder boundaries (the older partitioning standard). If you or someone else created a partition on the flash drive using newer tools (Vista or Windows 7 Disk Management or DiskPart) then you'll get this message. You can probably ignore it and skip the MBR test. (I have explained how to skip the MBR test in the next comment).

    I'm sure this has already been covered...but just incase it hasn't...a problem I ran into by downloading directly from the hiren's sight, you download an ISO...instead of wasting a CD since you're mounting directly to your USB is download an ISO reader (UltraISO etc.) and extract data from hiren's boot cd ISO

    I wish you could edit these comments. Your procedure is absolved. The problem was due to an earlier procedure I tried that was badly out of date.
    FYI, check out the utility at:
    Google "universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3"
    It's a utility to do this in one step from the CD .iso file. In the first selection you need to go to the bottom of the list to find Hiren's BootCD. Select the .iso, select the USB drive, click Create and you're done. No format or grub needed.

  • @Musicarta

    @xXMetalzoneXx Don't forget you can also use a CD to run the Hiren's BootCD (if you have one, it is slightly easier to create on a CD) but a USB will still work perfectly fine. My other video on 'How to create and run the Hiren's BootCD 13.2' is also in the description if you would (optionally) like to use a CD instead.

  • @Musicarta
    @Musicarta  12 лет назад

    @heartkiller88 Back when I made this video, this was the only way to do it because of how the files were constructed by Hiren. However, that may have changed now, so feel free to try it if you so wish; no harm can be done because anything on a USB flash drive is not permanent.

  • @Musicarta
    @Musicarta  12 лет назад

    I sure wish we could edit these things. Your procedure is absolved. I had earlier tried another one that didn't work and while similar to yours there were some significant differences regarding grub4dos which I think did the damage.
    (To be continued)

  • @Musicarta

    @xImistar If, however, after watching my 'How to change the Boot Order in the BIOS' video, you realise that there is not "USB-ZIP" or anything else to do with USB in your BIOS settings either, then your laptop's motherboard/BIOS does not support booting from USB. If this is the case, you will have to make the Hiren's BootCD on a CD instead. I do also have a video uploaded on how to do. The link can be found in the description. I hope I helped you out.

  • @Musicarta

    @steve6375 I've never heard of this program, but it looks quite good. Thanks for sharing this with me. I may even make an updated tutorials at some point if it really is much easier to follow for the viewer.

  • @Musicarta
    @Musicarta  13 лет назад

    @smartbroke There is no simple fix to this problem apart from deleting the Hiren's BootCD and re-installing it again. When this error appears on Windows itself, the solution is to re-install the program that shows te error and that usually fixes it. I would therefore do the same with the Hiren's BootCD. Also, if you have a blank CD instead of a USB Flash Drive, it is somewhat more reliable.

    @xImistar To boot from a USB Flash Drive, you would usually choose "USB-ZIP" from the boot menu. However, in your case, you will have to change the settings in the BIOS. If you are having trouble doing this, watch my video on 'How to change the boot order in the BIOS' which can be found on my channel, but instead of making the first boot device "CD", make it "USB-ZIP". Also, make sure you read all of the description as there is more information about booing from a USB there. (Continued...)

    @Xtusi For this process, this is as simple as you'll get mate. If you want simple, use a CD instead; it is miles more reliable and easy to make. I have made a video on how to this - the link is in the description.

    @85alexpr Note: If the registry key StorageDevicePolicies key does not exist, you will need to create it. As I am not allowed to put links in the comments section, I have put the link in the description box to a batch file. Download this batch file called add.bat and double click. The required key will be automatically added to registry.
    3. Double click the key WriteProtect in the right pane and set the value to 0 in the Value Data Box and press the OK button

    @jakebear9110 The Grub4Dos process should not affect the computer that you are using at all, only the USB flash drive (which is what we want), as long as you select the right disk. You can make sure that you have selected the right disk by checking the amount of total space you have on your USB flash drive in Start>Computer. Once you have got the Hiren's BootCD on USB (following the video) you can watch my video on how to change the boot order in the BIOS on my channel for help on running it.

  • @Musicarta
    @Musicarta  12 лет назад

    @Machistmo Just tested; the link is working perfectly. What web browser are you using? It downloads automatically as I said, so you should find it in your 'downloads'. For instance, in Google Chrome, the file will appear at the bottom of the browser. Most web browsers use Control + J to bring up the downloads page where you will see the zip file. Please refrain from verging on rudeness when you are asking for someone's assistance in future. Frankly, I don't think much of 'Is this is a joke????'

    Unfortunately, at the time of making this video, this application and similar ones did not include the Hiren's BootCD as a choice. Now that they do, I believe it is worthwhile for me to make another tutorial using that as it is a less complicated, easier to follow tutorial. I'll put it on my list of videos to do.

    Thank you for this priceless bit of help.
    Do you know of or could you find out about a way to use another partition on the USB stick instead of a RAM drive for Mini XP so that some persistence could be obtained? This would facilitate so much useful functional customization. I think it would be a game changer.

    3. Locate to C:\Program Files (or wherever your default program files/installation files are installed to) and find the 'grubinst'/'grubinst' gui folder and simply remove it.
    If none of these work then reply back and I'll see what I can do. However, as it is quite small it doesn't actually matter that much if you are unable to uninstall it.

    @85alexpr 4. Exit Registry, restart your computer and then again re-connect your USB pen drive on your computer. That is it, done.
    Feel free to get back to me if this didn't work for you. There are other solutions.

    I provided instructions for an alternative way of doing it (without the CD) as an annotation in the video itself.
