I’m 39 having a midlife crisis about turning 40 😂. Idk why I’m SO fixated but lately I’m like “i need to stop wearing makeup, when do I take my nose ring out, oh man it’s all over for me”. I know, a bit dramatic. I’m very active and I def feel young (in body, not in soul lol) but I’ve been struggling. Today I took a menty day because finals and hosting Christmas has me stressed and as I got ready to run errands I had a VERY RANDOM pull to wear a purple shimmery eye shadow. I have no such thing but now I’m seeing how stupid my thoughts have been. My grandma was a beautiful and fabulous woman and was always with her signature red lip. Why should I give up playing with makeup or trying to feel beautiful. As we get wiser, it’s intimidating to understand we aren’t what we were, but why should that matter!
I loathe rhe fact that so many creators and MUAs on social media say that a look isn't complete without false lashes. Most of us hate wearing false lashes and mascara and a eyelash cutler, used well, creates a beautiful eye look... 💜
*IF* I were to ever bother with falsies, it'd be for a Very Important event where the lack-of-thick-lashes is more noticeable. I have long & decent-curl lashes, never been blessed w/ thick ones (though not sparse either). I don't have the time to fuss w/ false lashes along w/ the extra time to properly take off & clean them for re-use. My ADD says "Nope, you're getting cleaned up soon as possible, & you're putting on colorful but simple makeup" for 95% of my life.
Myth #8 (shimmers/glitters shouldn't be worn by mature women)... I call BS! I'm 60 years old and I still rock shimmers! Ever since I was a teenager, whenever anyone said "You can't do ______", my thought or comment was always "WATCH ME!".
This is literally your best video ever, IMO. Super informative, super knowledgeable and great humour to boot. I have been with you since day dot and just love where you have taken your channel and your education of all of us, along the way. Thank you so much for this fabulous content, it's just so good and appreciated x
Way back in the '80s, as a teenager, I learned from one of the beauty magazines simply to put foundation and pressed powder on the eyelids and the lips along with the rest of the face to prevent eyeshadow from creasing and lipstick from feathering. That was our "primer" before primer was available, and it's always worked like a charm for me (although today I use face powder VERY sparingly because of fine lines and dry skin). In recent years, I did try using an eyeshadow primer for a while, because I love trying new products and techniques - but I didn't see any magic to it.
I'm 52 and I agree on the powders. You should check out some of the drugstore brands carry hydrating powders. I find those more forgiving! I have one from W7 pressed powder lift &illuminate, and I have a loose one from hard candy it has chill in the name. Both seem to be much less drying.
I'm 54 now, and if I live to be 100, I will still be wearing glitter and shimmer on my eyes. Shimmery and glimmery things make me happy, and when I feel happy, I project that out into the world.
Marlena, I received the samples of your new perfume line. I can’t praise it enough. It’s exquisite and the smell of each and every one is amazing. To say that you know it’s extremely special when my 24 year old daughter said oh mom what are you wearing because you smell so great? I am so confused about which one to order, I would order a few but I am on a tight budget. Congratulations to you
These are fun tips and facts, Marlena! I loved your MUG brushes and still your foundation brush was my all time favorite! I frequently get my make up for the stage and for photo shoots done professionally, and have gathered some make up questions based on what some MUAs have told me that I was curious about : 1. Setting spray breaks down makeup, thereby making it actually last fewer hours? 2. Natural hair brushes are always superior in performance to synthetic bristles? 3. Simple triangle sponges work just as great as expensive ones (I suppose the question is, are ALL sponges essentially the same?) 4. Moisturizer and primer work exactly the same way; in other words, moisturizer can substitute for primer? Finally a question of my own! Is it always best to apply makeup to a freshly washed face? What if it's been a few hours, and just splashed with water? Does having some dirt/oils on the face make things better or worse? Thanks for giving us a chance to ask some stuff and hopefully you have the chance to get around to addressing some of these! :)
Loved this video! I’m 64 and really like shine in my eyes, however finding the right one is a challenge. Thanks so much for your time! Take care and Merry Christmas 🎄
I love Haruharu Wonder! On my 3rd bottle of the rice oil cleanser and same for the sunscreen. I am 63 and this is the best cleanser for sensitive, dry eyes. It takes off all my eye makeup with no irritation at all. Marlena this video was so informative as always! Oh and I still wear shimmer and glitter on the eyes
Some of the “rules” around makeup were because of formula issues as much as they were about the look. So, “don’t wear powder if you’re over 50 or have dry skin”- 10 years ago most powders were rather chalky looking and emphasized lines and wrinkles, and exacerbated dry skin. That’s not true now because technology has changed. It’s similar with “don’t wear glitter or shimmer on mature skin”. The formulas were not as good as they are now so if you had crepey eyelids shimmer and glitter formulas would call attention to it and generally didn’t lay down as smoothly. One of the reasons I watch makeup and beauty content is so I see the evolution of the product formulations- not just the changes in makeup looks, and can make changes to my own routine as things change and improve. Several of the products and even the colors I wear now at 50 years old didn’t work for me at 30 years old due to the limitations of makeup development at time.
So true!!! Makeup formulations today are nothing like what my mom sold thru Mary Kay in early 90s, or the Avon I sold for 16 yrs in late 90s - 2020 when they were too much like K-beauty brand w/o sample to check color/formula (i'll pay the little bit more if any, to see it in store at Ulta or Sephora).
The haruharu sunscreen is my go to. Makeup NEVER pills! For glitter/shimmers, if you are hesitant, apply lightly, at least at first, with a finger, and go for a ‘sequin ‘ effect, then apply another layer if you want more punch
I need to add. If you don’t have dark circles to cover, just use your foundation under your eyes. Concealer conceals and if you have nothing to conceal then ditch the concealer.
The only makeup myth I didn't hear you address is that oily skin doesn't need moisturizer/hydration. I grew up in the era of Sea Breeze astringent topped by Oxy pads, scrubbing the skin with St. Ives peach pit exfoliating scrub and slathering on the benzoyle peroxide for acne. My oily, large pored acne prone skin was also flakey, scaley and dry. We didn't have the formulas back then that we have now, and once I started to actually show my skin some love with proper topicals including moisturizers and *ghasp* oils like squalane, my oil production actually reduced and my pores have gotten shallower. Similarly, the myth that foundation MUST be oil-free.
I mostly use drugstore products for budget reasons, and I love them. I rarely buy expensive makeup and when I do I honestly don't notice the difference in quality of product personally.
marlena I have to say i think it's brilliant you started your own purfume brand sorry I'm a bit late congratulating you I have bought many of the fragrances you have reviewed and suggested I'm looking forward to try what you've formulated xx
Plus there SOOOOOO much variation on the formulation of "shimmers" these days. I notice some of my "shimmers" wear OK on my 51 yo oily lids, while others are more like glitter (and a royal PITA to keep from being elsewhere on my face + the removal). We're old enough when something like the duo-chromes were unheard of except in extremely rare cases.
I am 55 and I love wearing makeup and shimmery eyeshadows. We were told by an influencer many years ago that after 50 only matte eyeshadows are suitable. My lids are quite smooth so I think I can afford shimmer. Another myth was that makeup ages you. If applied wrongly I think that’s correct. I saw a middle aged woman with blue liner below her bottom eye lashes. Looked horrible, but if that what she liked, who cares? We are not defined about how good we look outside, unless we stop searching there.
Loved this list! Another one I would add is not everyone that has a similar skin color have the same undertones. My sister and I both have tan skin but she has a reddish undertone and mine is warm golden.
Fabulous video. THANK YOU. LOVE high shimmer on my lids... almost 72. I LOVE make up and have A LOT. i wear a full face every day, minus the foundation. I rarely ever wear it and when I do, it's more of a skin tint. I never use primer or setting sprays. I have some eye shadows that are 30 years old. Tova Borgnine had a line of skin care (cactine) and make up. Her SECRET SHADE was so perfect that I bought a lot before it was discontinued. Still love it to this day. I apply with a clean brush and it's still a winner! I also am a big fan of the double cleanse and NEVER NEVER sleep in my make up. Looking forward to your next post.
I have been using regular face primer on my eyes and then setting it with powder foundation before doing my eye makeup and my eye makeup lasts all day.
Jen Luv does lots of videos on clean makeup. She is so annoyed at people who claim to make statements on clean makeup. And Jenn also mentioned you quite a while back, and that led me to your channel.
It’s rare these days to find an authentic , over the -top die hard professional that practices what they preach is few and in between. 🥺 However, you are all that & more wrapped up in a gorgeous bow! 💝 Based on these Holiday launches , what would be your star curated palette full of shiny , shimmery goodness with a pop of color to treasure as your golden ticket of Fabulous? Eye 9- 12 shades/ textures , along a face/ cheek palette (6) pan ? 💫
10:15 wrong, I do need an eye primer. Pressed powder will not prevent creasing, shadows applied over powder don't stay put and you don't get the same color payoff. Doing what you say causes shadow to crease and budge within an hour. I see this happening to every woman not wearing eye primer. Maybe that tip is for people with very dry skin? Eye primer assures great color payoff, the eyeshadow sticks to the skin and I can blend them easily, try Milani eye shadow primer.
Sidenote: Fragrances be kept in a cool/dry abd and away light. I have a drawer in bedroom for Fragrances. Just as with makeup, they will last much longer.
Powder won't stop the oils from breaking through if your eyelids are super oily . You are lucky to do it so but for me not wearing an eyelid primer will break the shadow within an hour.
I don’t necessarily look for “natural” or “clean” makeup , but I have started looking into Non-Toxic makeup as they are hormone and endocrine system disruptors, - which I now have a problem with.
Same I hate the word « clean beauty » lack of preservative and name it! But I have autoimmune disease that causes hormonal problems, I look for product whitout hormone and endocrine system disruptors. I need to prioritize my health before cosmetics. I am happy for people who do not have this problem 💛
Yup. I sold Avon for 16 years til 2020, & no few of my palettes were several years old. I honestly only got rid of most of them bc they weren't sold anymore and it's hard to sell a product your customer or potential customers can't get a hold of.
I do too! I have a purple/ cool lined Kat Von D pallet that I bought around 2018 that still works great! I don’t use it often, but pull it out once in a while. Powders last a very long time!
Another myth: Sponges ALWAYS have to be wet/dumped before use. No! They can be used dry, won’t add additional moisture to the skin but they will blend makeup and absorb excess every time. If anything, they could give more coverage and a longer matte finish when dry. ❤
I find when I wear makeup every day my skin is better because I'm better about doing skincare at night. When I dont wear it, im not as motivated to properly cleanse at night. But I always have to take off my makeup at night.
I have to disagree on the eyeshadow primer. While I do the setting powder step first to blend the mattes over, I have to use a sticky primer for the shimmers, multichromes, and especially glitter. The tacky primer amplifies the color, and holds it in place. I have super oily skin, and that's the only way to get it to stay put, and not crease. If I were to just use powder only, I would have a mess in 30 mins😅 and glitter all over my face 😅 Also on the spot foundation coverage, that's too much work. It easier and faster to just put it on all over your face. Also, I have eyeshadow palettes that are like 10 yrs old, and I STILL use them with no issues. I have the original WNW Comfort Zone palette, and the formula is STILL going strong. That's why I buy mostly powder eyeshadow. It lasts! And I'll ALWAYS wear shimmery, multichomey, glittery eyeshadow, no matter how old I get!! But I've always been a rebel 😅🥂💃🎉🎁🎄Happy Holidays!
I didnt know until I started watching RUclips in 2018 that you even could wash brushes. I had had mine since 1992 and they had never been washed. And I never wash my makeup off. 🤷🏻♀️ I've never had dkin issues and often get told i look younger than my age. I know I should but with severe ADHD it seldom happens.
Do you put foundation under your eyes? Over or under concealer? Sometimes I’m not paying attention and I end up putting it under my eyes. I always think uh oh 😳 but I really don’t know what the norm is.
Stuff going rancid - I bought a VBB lipgloss from their website and it already smells funky but I can't tell if it's the "natural" smell of the "clean" oils used or if the oils are already starting to go off. Love the color but the smell is weird. Also bought a Saie blush admittedly from an ebay seller as Saie is not available where I live and even though it was sold as "new" it smells rancid - actually a lot like my PMG lipglosses that also go rancid pretty fast. I'm not a fan of "clean" at all. IMO it's a scam and ends up making customers buy more and how this is helping the environment is a mystery to me.
I've been watching you for a few months now and you are one of my favorites! I have seen you appear with others (friends) who are also content creators, and I also watch them :) I will confess that I have always uses "wipes" ... lol ... but not anymore!! Promise!! Now to find a good cleansing product ... I'm off to do some online shopping! :)
My most favorite and lasting high quality brushes are the ones I bought from MUG. I've taken care of them and they look as good and work as well as they did 10+ years ago.
I recently bought a very high-end makeup pallette (a budget buster for me!) from one of the discount chains that I frequent, man I grabbed that pallette so fast! A beautiful presentation & It even has a mirror! After working with it off an on for a week, I closed it up & put it back in the box. Sooooo disappointed! I might take it on vacation because of the mirror. Another brand that is moderately priced, (at Ulta) I use regularly beats it hands down! Price is not always a guide. I recently threw out my white wet & wild makeup brushes after YEARS of use, they were never going to wear out 😅 & I have sooo many others.
I love HaruHaru spf! Some of my favorite makeup items (granted, I have a very small collection like 12 things) and my k beauty bb cream is chef’s kiss. It LOOKS LIKE SKIN! And it has no fragrance! I’m def guilty of sleeping in mascara… I am a back sleeper and I prefer to remove my tubing mascara in the shower but I do remove spf and my bb before bed…my 20s was a totally different story ooooops
I'm 54 and all about the shimmer and glitter eyeshadows. It's flattering and makes a huge difference. Doesn't age me at all, in fact it does the opposite. I don't use primer either.
@ shimmer looks good on you too so don’t ever stop ☺️ I find wearing just mat eyeshadow looks dull and tiring on its own and even if I’m doing a quick bronzer on the eyes, I’ll still pop a little liquid glitter topper over the top. We are never too old for the eye bling and personally I think we rock it better 😉🥰🫶🏼
Marlena for me. And I know im going to hear about it. That about sleeping in makeup for me. I've been doing it for 50 years. Not nightly. On and off when I'm to tired (old age lol) or get in late (younger & partying lol) and just want to get to be. I've been lucky to have never gotten an infection of any kind. Eyes or skin. No acne. Thank God. I'm glad you started your business again. I've been with you since your first separation when you where letting us know. You were wearing real pretty green eyeshadow. Oh and your baby is gorgeous. God bless your family.
Sleeping in your makeup doesn't cause eye infections. Just like using mascara past 3 months doesn't cause eye infections. Sleeping in your makeup may cause you to break out and sure as hell messes up your sheets, but other than that, nothing tragic will occur.
Great tips! I'm 51 and have quit wearing concealer. I don't have dark circles and my foundation is enough. Adding the concealer just sinks into lines. Plus it's a step and $ I can save.
I’ve been looking for a good sunscreen so I looked up the Korean sunscreen and almost purchased UNTIL I saw that it has niacinamide! I have terrible reactions to niacinamide.. 😢 any other recommendations?
Unpopular opinion: don't use cleansing oil/balm to remove makeup. Remove makeup with micellar water or bi-phase removers and THEN do a double cleanse - aka TRIPLE CLEANSE. This way oil cleanser can work deeper or on breaking down residue/sun cream/oils, resulting in clearer skin.
@@Thetinyfit Dolly Parton has literally said that's part of why she sleeps nightly in a full face - she doesn't want to frighten anyone that sees her w/o her makeup! 🤣
I'm with you on the brushes. I clean mine after every use. I also have three sets th as t I rotate through so they'll last longer. I have a big collection of brushes on honestly only use the same 3-5 of them (depends on products I'm using and look I'm going for).
I’m 42 and I wear shimmer/glitter on my eyes everyday and I love seeing older women wearing fun makeup. You’re never too old to enjoy these things.

Marlena…..I’m 73 and I love my shimmer and glow! I wear it daily. I will die with my shiny eyeshadow on my eyes!
Haru Haru is my ride or die Korean skincare brand! That sunscreen is amazing and lays beautifully under makeup!!
Sidenote:
Fragrances be kept in a cool/dry abd and away light. I have a drawer in bedroom for Fragrances. Just as with makeup, they will last much longer.
Apologies for typos 😮
I do exactly the same!
Learnt soooo much from you . Thank you for being so generous with your information, greatly appreciated. Love alll your videos ❤ ur so beautiful
So educational! Thanks
I use eyeshadow sticks. The Bobbi Brown and Victoria Beckham eyeshadow sticks need no primer.
Powder won't stop the oils from breaking through if your eyelids are super oily . You are lucky to do it so but for me not wearing an eyelid primer will break the shadow within an hour.
Same. And an eyeshadow primer is a necessity. Oily skin requires more help. I put powder over that and shadows go on fine and actually last.
❤❤ just ordered the cleansing oil and gel.
I still use my eyeshadow palettes that are over 5 years old. 😬
Yup. I sold Avon for 16 years til 2020, & no few of my palettes were several years old. I honestly only got rid of most of them bc they weren't sold anymore and it's hard to sell a product your customer or potential customers can't get a hold of.
I know that’s right…cuz I do too…i didn’t spend that much money for it to go to waste
@@jeannewishes1688 Exactly! 🤣
Same!
Love Korean skincare ❤️
It's SO good right?!
I just luv you ❤ thank you for the myth about shimmer eyeshadow for older eyes is BS 💫👊🏻
You are naturally so beautiful. X
Great video! Thank you!
I love her,, im 43 all ur tips and notes works and applies to me ,, u are a beautiful soul marlina ,, love u from UAE
I’m 64 and you cannot pry my shimmers out of my hands. I like a good matte look but when I use shimmers they help open my hooded eyes.
Do you put foundation under your eyes? Over or under concealer? Sometimes I’m not paying attention and I end up putting it under my eyes. I always think uh oh 😳 but I really don’t know what the norm is.
Wow, loved this ❤ thank you so much 💕
Stuff going rancid - I bought a VBB lipgloss from their website and it already smells funky but I can't tell if it's the "natural" smell of the "clean" oils used or if the oils are already starting to go off.
I thought I was being extra when washing my brushes every time I used them after every time I used makeup.
Cerave has some of the best! Their prices have definitely crept up the last few years but I still think they're worth it.
My most favorite and lasting high quality brushes are the ones I bought from MUG. I've taken care of them and they look as good and work as well as they did 10+ years ago.
Hi Marilena from Italy, thanks from Italy for your precious suggestions ❤❤❤
I use cold cream (Ponds) to remove makeup, then use a cleanser to wash my face.
Hi Marlena! I am dying to try your fragrances. Can you tell me when I can purchase them? I live in Australia. Much love Sue😘🌹
Bonjour Marlena, j'adore le double nettoyage et j'aime l'essence de Caudelie. Merci pour le partage😍😍😍
@@julieschinkel same! I love the shimmers as I’ve gotten older
I got my boyfriend to use the cleansing oil he likes it because he has super oily skin so he likes that it feels clean without stripping his skin.
I double and triple cleanse!😂😂
Same! It works SO amazing!!
Great tips! I'm 51 and have quit wearing concealer. I don't have dark circles and my foundation is enough. Adding the concealer just sinks into lines. Plus it's a step and $ I can save.
Thanks for all the info. 👍🏼
Great video. ❤❤❤
0:22 having talc clog my pores saved me so much money, I can’t even tell you.
I use the tatcha oil to take makeup off and then cleanse with another cleanser ❤
I love this video! ❤
Great video!
Could you film how to check makeup expiration dates?
I’ve been looking for a good sunscreen so I looked up the Korean sunscreen and almost purchased UNTIL I saw that it has niacinamide! I have terrible reactions to niacinamide.. 😢 any other recommendations?
Thank you!! It's part ofhaving aHuman face!! I will remember that one to tell myself when I can't get my skin flawlwss & I'm upset!!
I'm in a full everyday face every time I'm in the gym... I ain't going there without makeup😂
Imagine Charlotte Tilbury sleeps FULL makeup on EVERY night😂 imagine that. I could never
She wants to be ready for the sexy firemen if her flat catches fire 😂
Not just her - but Dolly Parton does as well. And even plastic surgery can only do so much, if her sleeping in makeup had ruined her skin.
@@Thetinyfit Dolly Parton has literally said that's part of why she sleeps nightly in a full face - she doesn't want to frighten anyone that sees her w/o her makeup! 🤣
45 yes old. Shimmer and glitter all day every day
I'm with you on the brushes. I clean mine after every use. I also have three sets th as t I rotate through so they'll last longer. I have a big collection of brushes on honestly only use the same 3-5 of them (depends on products I'm using and look I'm going for).
Thank you!!
Marlena what do you think about at home micro needling?
