Hate Tube Screamer? This Might Be The Pedal For You - Kingtone Duellist

- In todays video, i'm looking at the Kingtone Duelist overdrive pedal.
Here is what Kingtone says about the Duellist.
This is the Classic Duellist. Massive, open, no compromise lead and rhythm tones, there is no pedal quite like it. Now with a whole host of exciting new features which include, a custom CNC Machined 6061 aluminum enclosure, easy access side switches for new tonal options and a channel order selector switch.
The Duellist features top mounted jacks, 9-18v DC, you can run it at 12 or 18v for more headroom. You can change the channel order A into B or B into A with a simple flick of the switch. Side mounted dip switch allows easy access to powerful tonal options. The new options include an amp-like setting, this gives you an open, tube-amp style tone. The SRV Mod adds attack and dynamics to the classic TS style tones, you’ll probably want to leave this option on once you’ve heard it.. With the Duellist you can also split channel A and B so you can use it with a pedalboard switcher. In ‘Split’ mode, using TRS cables the Duellist functions as two separate pedals with an in and out for each side, this allows you to place the two sides of the Duellist in “different places” on your pedalboard, e.g. you can put other pedals in-between the two sides.
Dual Overdrive/Boost and Distortion.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.
By some distance the best review I have seen of this pedal - thank you! - great when dirt pedals are demo’d at lower gain settings for those of us who live life at the mellower end of the gain stage!
Completely agree. The less gain, the more you can hear the pickup nuances
@@Livelaughlimpbizkit Yes! Do you have this one. I am between it and maybe a Revival Compact pedal. I lean towards this one though- sounds sweet. I guess the new model- 2022 is best? SRV tone stack?
This sounds fantastic and that intro was beautiful! Well done, Paul🫡👏🙏
Many thanks!
Jesse at KingTone is making some of the best stuff out there.
💯 my dream is to own the duelist, the vintage fuzz and a royalist amp. Pure gold
Glad to see you back : hope your son has fully recovered ! Have a great 2023 with your family, Rene
Those spread voicings in the intro! Beautiful *chefs kiss*
Bought my pals used Duelist and it ROCKED my world!! Not a huge TS guy( although Way Huge Camel Toe Green Rhino side is 🔥🔥🔥) Duelist another level pedal and opened Pandora’s Box to Gladio and a few other higher tier pedals but ultimately only Duelist stayed! Loved your video!!! Thank you much!!!!!
Hmm I like my cameltoe a lot. Didn’t like the duelist nor the Gladio although I do have the antique b2 only when I feel like playing clean or push amp’s distortion. That cameltoe name lol. Oh the Palisades by Earthquaker I love. I was writing while Paul mentioned it. Sorry about that.
@@Utube-g3g If I wasn’t in purge mode, I would’ve kept Cameltoe but trying to simplify and minimize excess at moment! I also play keys, bass and drums so I’m trying to stop my house from becoming Daddy’s Junky Music hahahahahaaha! Cheers!
I don't know... Whatever Paul touches sounds amazing!
Nice video excellent.
I just got mine from eBay, can't wait to see it and play it.
I'm a diehard Rat fanatic and as such have to many Rats including my first one I bought as a teen in 79.
I recently bought the Duellist off of Craigslist, I ran it side by side today with my Vintage Rat and was surprised how much it came close if not in a weird way a more refined Rat.
Those Duelist pedals sound great. I didn’t like tube screamers until I tried the Wampler Moxie. Killer pedal!
You must try the BLUESPOWER pedal by kingtone it’s bloody awesome!
Excellent playing! Thanks for sharing this, I definitely like the sound of that pedal. May I ask, which compression, delay and reverb pedals (or plugins) did you use for this video, and what amp is the guitar plugged in? Thanks heaps!
Sounds like amplified nation amp and Strymon reverb
Great demo Paul. I have had this on the board for a couple years. My go to drive. I know I say this all the time I love your style of playing. Happy New year!
Cheers Glen, happy new year
Thanks- justed orderded a brand new one V2. Can't wait to try it. Your review helped.
Everything you touch sounds magical Paul. Happy New Year! Nice to see you making videos, hope your son is doing well.
Great demo and playing!!. I also use this pedal and i'm in love for certain things. I play a Friedman jj jr, and my clean tone is the drive chanel, but with the guitar volume rolled down. When i want to add non compressed crispy, i use the bluesbreaker side and when want to do something with more definition, use the tubescreamer side. It's a so usefull pedal at all level of distortion, but i feel like the glass and fat modes are not for me, my playing or my amp... Stock is just perfect!!
Love your vids Paul , always enjoy your demos and playing. Really Dynamic , always entertaining.
Many thanks Ralph.
Man.....I mean....theres something special in ur playing mate. So clean but soulful at the same time. Great stuff.
Cheers fella
I like the buttons and knobs
Doesnt this pedal sound sort of like a Tube Screamer? If someone hated them, why would they want this one?
Got one of these last year. Great pedal!
Yeah me too, I got the anniversary model that’s silver with the timber grip on the two drive knobs, killer looking!
So tastefully played !
Great playing and tone! ,your drive tones always sound phenomenal and not to dissimilar, that’s from your playing, phrasing and feel.
Paul, what reverbs and delay are you using? What’s your signal path?
Cheers M much appreciated. Guitar into the pedal into a Matchless Independence the Matchless into a two notes torpedo studio The reverb is from an axe fx3
@@TheStudioRats Very lovely tones, Paul. The Duellist has a great sound, but I suspect that most of that is your very nice playing.
Greetings from Fair Hill Maryland, Paul and thanks again for another stellar demo! This pedal has been on my radar for a few years now and your vid pushed me over the edge so I just ordered one. Happy New Year, brother!
Best intro ever, what a sound
I think you just convinced me not to get a duellist 😅
But your clean tone is awesome! Can you share more about the guitar and signal chain?
PS Your playing is great
Why ?
Because it makes a massive difference @@dougrettberg7986
Great demo, incredible playing!
have got the LYR SSS, Gladio and soon this Duellist, 80€/Pedal and just GREAT Tone!!!
from minute 5:42 moving forward, i get the same tone stacking a standard TS9 + Boss SD 1 so i am not sure if getting the Duellist would make a diference regarding let say a SRV tone. What do you think?
60K!!! Wow!,, I remember 6K. But if you guys keep disappointing me and taking a break during Christmas week? I might have to swim across the pond and give you…BOTH of you, another black eye! So don’t let it happen again. Got it? Good.
I have the version 2 and sounds very good!!
Are the side switches really helpfull and all? Are those extra/new functions worth of changing from V1 to V2? I have the Duellist V1 and like it very much. I might change to the V2 if its worth it. Thanks!
Paul, as usual, thank you. Been tempted to get one and thx to your demo...just ordered from King Tone! Can't wait. What's it sound like with your Esquire? Cheers!
Hello Paul, Great demo! What kind of amplifier do you use here?
Fantastic review!
Thank you kindly!
Do you like this pedal with the Vox AC15?
Thanks, Bill
Thanks for putting up this demo.
How does it work with humbuckers?
Really well, I found with Humbuckers I soaked the gain back and turned up the tone control.
Love this pedal
Great video . May I ask what pups you have installed in the strat ? Cheers
It’s got a Seymour Duncan twang banger in the bridge and Lollar 64 neck and mid.
Awesome demo as usual ! 🥰🤙. Which pick do you use please ? I’d like to be able to play a bit faster sometimes ...thanks 🙏🥰
Cheers Belo, I use Dunlop flow .88 I like the way they sound and the sharp point.
Above average demo. Top shelf.
wow that pedal sounds sick👍
Great sounds! Which pickups are in the strat?
Hey man. I just got this pedal. Yours sounds fantastic. I can’t get that sound, I’m using it through TONEX but It sounds muddy and dark, my chain is: Duellist-> TONEX->Seymour Duncan power stage with EVH 1x12 cab.
What amp or modeler are you using? Thanks
What captures are you using from tonex? I’d recommend the matchbox capture pack on our website
Running it through a tonex is your problem it's meant to be ran through a tube amp
@@dustinarnold79 Thank you for your feedback!
Brilliant playing Paul!. What´s the chord progression in the beginning?
Excellent Paul do you know you can open the back up to change the parameters? Gives you more options 👌👌👍
Thanks Judd, yes I tried that and preferred the stock settings.
hey Paul whats the reverb youre using in this demo? i have the duellist version2 btw. its a keeper
Sounds like Strymon
Duellist sounds good. I need advices. I’m gonna get the pro junior iv. I have the rv6. Do I get this or the browne protein? Will be using both the LP and Strat. Play mostly hard rock and blues. DIO songs for my past time and Mayer and Clapton to play for my wife.
Sounds awesome with strats. For real. Boosts a bit bass and treble, also, fullfills mids. With LP sounds a bit dark, but the pedal has glass setting, if you use it with your LP you'll notice your sounds gonna get a bit brighter, solving the "dark problem".
Stacking them it's so satisfying tho.
Not to mention you can adjust the clippings if you want to get more gain/heavy sound.
The pedal it's just amazing.
Hope not too late and it helps.
I don’t like Tubescreamers, so this sounds great.
So many cool things can be done using parallel dirt boxes.
All these "dual" pedals are parallel dirt boxes.
Save 200 bucks and blend two OD or distortion
until I buy this pedal, I am watching this video multiple times to satisfy my craving !!! lol
would be nice to hear it without the added delay and reverb. it sounds great, but I'm pretty sure this pedal doesn't have reverb or delay.
Hi Paul, can you split the channel A and B with a pedal switcher for this older duelist model?
No you can’t
What neck is on that Strat? That might be the prettiest one I’ve ever seen
AS someone who has gone through at least 6-7 tube screamers - and hate them all - I can say that my Duellist ACTUALLY sounds nothing like a tube screamer. It's much much better.
I have a v1 and v2 my favorite drive pedal
Sounds great could have something to do with the player cheers.
What're pickups do you using this Fender?
00:49 - LUSH! What's the signal chain?!?
ALL NECK REVIEW PLEASE!
You can get the tone with a standard overdrive pefal and EQ PEDAL that way you dont have to get a bank loan to buy one
Okay, okay, I want one.
I saw this was back on your board recently :) would you take this for use with tonex over palisades or sunset?
I keep flitting between the 3 to be honest. All are great.
Signal chain, Paul?
What amp where you playing through?
Hi I would like to ask what is the voltage that you used?
9v
Bluesbreaker pedals are NOT heavily compressed, I'm not sure why he said that in this video. They're considered to be one of the most open circuits out there actually. The morning glory, for instance (BB type), really shows just how dynamic and uncompressed they can be. Even when you give em heavy gain, they don't ever really smooth out and can be quite brash.
What pickup setting are you on
Which guitar is this one?
I've owned 2 duelists and 2 soloists. I've sold them and I couldn't afford to rebuy so I bought the demonfx dual gun....I know they essentially ripped off Jesse but I'm trying to justify it in my head by saying that I bought two of the originals already 😅
Is there a big difference? I have the dualgun but I want to know if there is really much difference in terms of quality from the original 😅
What is the signal chain please-thanks.
The Duelist is great, but it’s not knocking the Protein off my board. :)
I’d like to try one of them.
I had both, no longer have the Protein. LOVE the Duellist!
Currently selling my Protein for the Duellist!
Cant remember the name of the song 00:45
I really don’t understand the “hate” Tube Screamers gets.
I hate coriander, but that is deservedly so.
I think its emulating Dumble sounds .. not a tube screamer.
Tube screamer and a blues breaker, look at the details from the manufacturer
Eargasm🙃_/,,/
Hate Tubescreamer? Buy a tubescreamer! makes sense. No thanks... they're all trash.
If you people hate the tube screamer why was it Stevies go to? Learn to play and your appreciations may change....I'm sick of hearing how players hate a tube sreamer.
Thanks for the tip, I currently taking lessons in how to appreciate comments about tubescreamers
