  • Have you ever dialed in a awesome tone, but wanted just a little bit more? Well in this video I share my favorite setting on any Tube Sceamer to capture your tone, push it into the next stage of breakup, and not color your tone at all! This trick works for any Tube Screamer (TS9, TS808, Mini, etc) They all do this and it really shows off why the tube screamer is so famous! What did you think? Let me know down below!

    Very useful tip. One note about the tone knob on a TS-9: It isn't neutral at noon. It's neutral at more around 9:00. A lot of people don't know this and say it can be harsh but it's only because they have the tone way up, thinkig it's at unity.

    The most common way to use it is secret?

  • @ck2music712
    @ck2music712 3 года назад +20

    The "problem" with this is that not enough people know that with a TubeScreamer, when the tone stack is set at "noon" (or straight up) it's not "neutral" or "flat"...At "noon" it's ADDING midrange AND high EQ... If you want the EQ to remain the SAME as when the pedal is OFF, you have to turn the tone button ALL the way "down" (to the left)... I had no idea until I started studying the TubeScreamer, but just try it, and you'll see for yourself... Oh, and by the way; Turning the gain all the way down and the level all the way up (ala S.R.V.) is the MOST common way that people set these, I thought anyway, lol...

    • @smokepeddler
      @smokepeddler 2 года назад +2

      Tone control pretty much just cuts the treble and a touch of the high mids.
      No matter what the settings on a ts9 bass is cut and mids are added to the signal.

    • @deanmlshredder
      @deanmlshredder 2 года назад

      @@smokepeddler sure as shit. That's the best part. Tightens up that attack and gives a mid boost for cutting through on leads. Higher perceived volume is usually better than higher actual volume. And if you want higher actual volume you put it in the loop or after a distortion but I like a graphic eq for that job.

    I use the TS9 for my clean tone. It does something nice to it. I set the "drive" to 0, the level to unity and the tone wherever I like best depending on the guitar I'm using.

      There isn't a pedal you can buy that is transparent. It is all about trade offs. No one thinks of SRV as having a processed sound so after taking a tip from his sound I use the ts like he does as a boost and leave the gain virtually off and it works better than several gourmet boosts I bought that were all major disappointments.
      I have bought about 180 pedals over 5 years. For my pedal rig I use 70 pedals wired up as 4 self contained boards linked into one switcher. One half of all my pedals are OD's low, medium. high gain and Fuzz. I use a Plexi 50 watt set just shy of crunch and the pedal are all set to unity gain. My problem has always been to get enough sustain on various tunes where I need it. I have found nothing is more reliable than a ts.

  • @NORMIES_GET_OUT
    @NORMIES_GET_OUT 2 года назад +1

    Think of it like this. The output is like your power tubes in your amp. It's not changing the tone, it's just increasing or decreasing the output volume. The tone control is neutral when it's at 0. As you move it up, it starts adding mids and a little bit of highs to that tend to get lost when you add distortion. The gain control is actually adding gain to the signal like an additional preamp gain stage, and as you crank it up, it will start to overdrive and distort the signal BEFORE it hits your amp. If you want to push the front of a tube amp, you're letting the preamp tubes distort the signal and not the pedal itself, so you dial the gain back and crank the output to feed your amp a much bigger, but mostly clean signal. It's effectively using it as a clean boost, but I like to add a little bit of gain and bump up the tone knob until I get the sound I want. You can also dial back the output if you don't want to push your amp as hard.

  • @themagnetc

    This is how I like to use them too. Not true that it doesn’t color your tone though. For one you’re introducing diode clipping into circuit and the EQ curve of the tubescreamer chip/circuit is decreasing the bass and pushing the mids, which is what is giving you the perceived “push” to the next level. The amp can break up more efficiently, sounding more pronounced in the frequencies our ears really want to hear

    I just found a Boss MT2 in a pawn shop as new so thought I would give it a try ( actually they had a fender Tele 2008 and I wanted to get the price down so got both for the price of the guitar). I digress.
    What I found was the MT2 has amazing control of tone with the 2 different mid controls. I know the MT2 was hated for a while because everyone considered it a hair band pedal? I Guess? Not really sure but nobody wanted them for a while. Well to be sure, the distortion is very over the top and fizzy so I was playing with it and found if you turned the distortion right down and played with the tones it has a half decent distortion. With plenty of headroom on the distortion on tap.

    This demo shows how most pedal reviews are actually amp reviews - the pedal tone had very little to do with the overdriven amp tone. A "clean" boost sounded pretty close to the dirty boost. Yes there's EQ going on and still a little pedal grit even in "clean" mode. But the difference wasn't huge on an already dirty amp.

I know it’s difficult to describe sound with words, but these terms are so vague. Experimenting on my own is very confusing really hard to tell what the knobs do really.

    WRONG! The Tube Screamer is a mid boost effect. That's it's main purpose. It was designed to change your tone in exactly that way. Setting the TONE knob at 12 o'clock does not change that fact. The tone knob on this pedal adjusts the tone of that pronounced midboost in a subtle way. It is not a typical tone adjustment. The ONLY setting of the Tube Screamer that may not affect your original tone is the OFF setting.

    I think it sounded pretty bad but, too harsh, but it could be your camera's mic. It's a pretty cool trick nonetheless, especially if your guitar pickups are low output.

    Tube Screamers will always color your tone, the only one that doesn't is the OCD w/LP switch mode. Or...put an EQ pedal in from of the amp and only use the Level control for a boost without color.

    Point well made!
    I've seen lots - too many - YT vids where people are 'listening' to the tone of a TS. Even evaluating it thorough clean amps... Yuk! a TS will _never_ shine that way!
    Some drive pedals sound great 'by themselves' into clean amps. Cool, but those same pedals may not sound great into a slightly dirty amp.
    IMO, We shouldn't 'listen' _to_ a TS style OD, we should hear/feel the effect that a TS style OD has on our existing amp amp sound. Preferably that starts with an already cooking amp sound..
    A TS or SD-1 pushing an already on the edge amp is a thing of beauty.
    And simply what it was always designed to do - slight bass cut and all. \0/

    • @JohnShalamskas
      @JohnShalamskas 3 года назад +1

      if you push an already dirty amp with more signal level, the pedal tone won't be very discernible. I'd like to see all pedals demoed on both "clean with high headroom" and "edge of breakup" amps.

  • @hummarstraful

    It's also awesome on bass. Does lose a little low end though. But it will make your bass cut through the mix like crazy. I noticed you have JBL monitors. I do too, along with Yamaha NS-10 Studiios. But the JBL's have huge dip at 100k. I discovered this when I bought Sonarworks and measured my speakers. If you don't have Sonarworks, you might consider putting and EQ on your mix bus with a rather large bump at 100K. I've got the 7" JBLS and the 100k dip is -12db!! Not kidding. So, your JBL's will a have a similar dip. That's why they are so cheap lol. Great for listening to music, though.

    Just what place it should be in pedalboard chain...
    In or out of pedalboard?

    • @PeterPug
      @PeterPug 4 года назад +2

      Pawel Drezek I typically place my drive pedals in higher gain towards lower gain. That way my lowest gain or boost increases the vol of my higher gain pedals. The other way around sounds different but mostly because your output vol is less affected so solos won’t pop as much. IMO

  • @donsimon63

    The only way to get a transparent tone from a tube screamer is to remove it from your pedal board and return it to its box.

  • @michaelinglis567
    @michaelinglis567 4 года назад +2

    Hmm that was a secret? I guess I'm bad at keeping secrets cause I thought that was just common sense. I'm either using my ts9 (I've modded it in a couple ways but it still has a stock setting) like here or with the tone at around 2-4 o' clock and the gain at 0 and the level about 3 o clock for the classic mid boost (most common setting). Those two settings are what pretty much every tube screamer owner who can actually play their guitar uses lol. There's certainly other good settings but for a good "works with just about any amp setting" tone those are your best bets. My mods are for frequency shifts that allow for two levels of boost. Boost 1 is a bass boost and boost 2 is a bass and gain boost. The boosts are on a 3 way on off on that controls boost 1, stock or boost 2. Than I added a 3mm led bezel with a red 3mm led which is much easier to see than the stick diffused led that you have to be right above to see. And I'm running out of builds so I think next project will be adding another switch, on on this time, for the tube screamer on steroids mod which adds 6 diodes in series.

    Why does the intro clip sound so much better than the demo towards the end of the vid? Did you use different settings or was it just recorded differently?
