Great vid. Only tip on the powder, make the hole before pushing in with the powder. If not, you’ll remove the powder while making the hole like in the video, less effective.

I know it’s a year late but just another little tip with rooting powder, never dip the cutting into it put a small bit into the lid and dip it into that, just incase there is a virus on the plant material it won’t spread onto your other cuttings. Just dump what’s left in the lid don’t pop it back in. You can also get three types of hormone powder for the soft semi and hard cuttings other than that brilliant little informative video.

Take it a step further and don't even contaminate the lid of your rooting powder. I save and reuse the little plastic cups that coffee creamer comes in and put a little of the powder in it for use. What's leftover is dumped into an old Rx container and used on less valuable cuttings that could use an edge, but root easily.

wonderful infos with Camellias cuttings. This time Im gonna make sure my Camellias will stay and I started the cutting propagation of my roses and Japanese tricolours plants only mine were a little bit longer stems but one pot each so it was a lot of work for me. Thanks! Always worth giving a go. I would say to make sure you keep them moist. And remove some parts of each leaf to avoid water evaporation from the cutting.

Hi Phill, thank you for this useful video. We have a mature camellia in the garden that needs pruning urgently as it's pushing into the neighbour's fence. I would love to be able to salvage some cuttings, do you think they could survive if taken this time of year? (early March). Ta!
Hi Elena, I think it's worth a try. Keep the soil moist. Keep them in the shade. Be patient and they should eventually root.
Hi Phil, great video. How long after this process would it take for them to grow into a plant like the 15cm high ones you see in the garden centres? I’m also in the UK and wondering what time of year is best to start and if they need protecting during winter. Any tips would help a lot!
It really depends although I would say they are quite slow growing from a cutting initially. I think the best time of year to take cuttings is the end of summer and I would keep them under cover during winter to keep the frost off.
I think you mean the cambium, under the bark where the vascular bundles are for moisture and nutrients uptake

Hi
I suppose you could cover them to prevent moisture loss although I prefer to leave them in a cool place out of direct light. Either will possibly work.
Really enjoyed this video. I have few questions. Does it matter kind of soil, I've got miracle grow ? I'm in Florida can I put them outdoors in mostly shade? To keep moisture, do I cover them with plastic bag or 2 litter plastic cut cola bottle?

Soil isn't a big deal as long as it is kept moist. I would keep them out of direct sunlight. The cola bottle idea sounds good.

Hi Phil, as I am blind, could you tell me how long those cuttings are, and just how many leaves is best to leave on? How long will they take to root, and how will you know when to pot on? Many thanks as always.
Hi Keith, they are about 3-5" long. They take around 1-2 months to root. I like to leave a couple of clipped leaves on. I would probably leave them about 4 months before potting on.
Thanks again Phil, I have, over this summer, taken lots of cuttings from my Golden Shield Cupressus Macro Carpa. I wasn't sure what length to take them, so they vary in length between 3" - 7" but I don't know when or if they have sprouted roots, and I am afraid of pulling them in case I destroy one.
@@keithfoxton5836 when I can't wait anymore, I soak the pot and then drop the pot upside down so you can easily remove the seedlings then put them in some wet sand or water

Thank you so much for the video. What is the best season to be taking cuttings? I have three acres and after months have decided to grow the 'Barbara Clark' variety here in NZ as a hedge surrounding the entire property. Reason being as we are in a rural / coastal variety with somewhat poor soil and that variety grows well here locally. I think I need to do about ~ 1,300 cuttings. Ugh! Anyway, cheers man.

What kind of environment do they need at this stage? Can I put them outside for the winter or do they need to stay warm? We do have nights that get below or near freezing but otherwise mild winters. Thanks!
I would say you can keep them out but it would be better to keep them in a greenhouse.

Hi Phil, this is my 8th batch of about 10 attempt. I just can’t seem to get any to root. Could I ask what is roughly your success rate? And how long should it take to know if it’s rooted. Thanks
It's a hard question. It really varies but they do usually take for me, several months to root. If the soil dries out they tend to loose the new roots that are forming or die altogether. Keep them out of direct sunlight with damp soil that is well draining. You also need a bit of luck too.
Same here...Mine most of the time rot after a few weeks. I am trying air layering this year, hopefully this will do for me.
Have you grown the Coco Chanel favorite that is used in her products “Alba Plena” and if so, your opinion on it?
I have not heard of that variety. I will look out for it now you mention it.

It really depends on the time of year a d the weather. Maybe 4 months during summer
i followed your instruction and i did not make it successfully. The only difference was that I used different brand root booster. Some I even tried to wrap arond by grafting tape. With or without tape, it made no difference. The branches had dried out before root started to grow. For curiosity how long it takes to grow roots in your case. Would you please give me any suggestions that I can improve. Thanks.
Hi, how long was it before the branches dried out? They must be kept constantly moist and depending on the climate it can take even 6 months for growth.

Hi, the time it takes varies quite a bit in weather and time of year. If you have waited a while you can wet the soil and gently remove the cuttings and push them into a pot of sand. This helps to rough up the surface and encourages root development

You just need to check them periodically by gently pulling them out every month or so. As soon as you see tiny roots forming I tend to transfer them into a pot of sand. This encourages the root growth as the roots can develop more easily.

@@neo4500 I use sharp sand because if has sharp bits in it which help to rough up the stems and encourage roots to develop in my opinion.

Hi not in the first season as they need to built a root system to support the heavy flowers.
How long does it take for roots to establish ? I have a lovely camellia and want to try . My cuttings last year didn’t work
To be honest it differs depending on time of year, weather etc. I find that they do take a while to root. Even if you don't see roots at first, as long as they stay green don't give up on them. Eventually they should root.

Just make sure that the soil stats moist. Keep them in shade.
This video has inspired me to try again. Over the years I’ve tried a few different camelias, at different times of the year - not one cutting has rooted, ever.
I’ve tried in the summer, early autumn and in the spring, when the new growth is at its strongest. Was it the wrong time?
I would try at the end of summer. Also, wait as long as the cutting stays green. It can take months for roots to form.

Best time could be around August when the new growth has hardened.

Thank you for this video. I bought an expensive camelia from garden store and it died. I had watered it a few times in the time it died. It seemed to be fine cause there were lots of rainy days. When I planted it I threw in some chicken manuer from the chicken coup along with wood shavings. Then put the pot of dirt in with the plant in it and I put a spike of plant food down in the dirt about 5 inches from the plant. Don't know if that's what killed it. It had plenty of water and now I want to try to save what's left of the plant. Most of it died. It had so many buds on it too. Darn!
Camellias like an acidic soil, my guest it was the chicken manure
When growing a new cutting I would advise not to give it any kind of fertiliser. It doesn't yet have an extensive enough root system or enough size to deal with large amounts of nutrients. Wait until it is an active stage of growth.
@@PhillWyattProjects It wasn't a new cutting though. It was a full plant from a nursery that was about 2 ft tall full of buds. But thank you for this information.
