My grandfather Francis LaGrega was telling the story of the last time he went to visit his hometown in Italy. Said he landed in France and he drove through a little bit of Germany little Austria through Switzerland over the Alps in the Italy and made it to his hometown. He said nobody asked him for any passports he didn’t have to show his drivers license to anybody it was a wonderful trip but then again World War II just ended

now with the Schengen zone you pretty much can drive from Portugal to Norway (and anywhere in between, including the countries you mentioned) without showing your passport/driving license/registration/insurance once (provided no random control)

3:02 If you can't read Italian, the sign simply reads: *NO VEHICLES OF ANY KIND PERMITTED.* In unambigious pictograms.
The *exceptions* require reading Italian. *Not* the rule.
So the argument is "by my understanding, I was never allowed to drive there." Not "I didn't know I wasn't allowed to drive there during..."

I could see it'd be easy to do, particularly if you were following authorised vehicles. I imagine this would include deliveries, possibly residents or business visitors and taxis etc.

There will be a high volume of people driving from France, Germany etc who will only have pictograms to go by.

In France, the rental company charged an administrative fee, and the French government sent me a bill for the fine. They did it electronically, so I got it before we left France, and I paid it. No question we did violate the speed law, and it wasn't all that much. Also, I intend on going back and didn't want to chance that being a problem.

We get a lot of backpackers in Aust who are usually young people in party mode. The are a big plus for the economy so welcome, but you don't want to live next to a backpackers party house. Many places near beaches are rented in perpetuity by revolving groups as they pass the baton on when they move.
They are also notorious for unofficial but semi-permanent car sales in back streets as they do similar with cheap cars. They then rack up tickets with impunity and go home ignoring the debt. Australian authorities do not pursue traffic debt overseas as it's too hard. I'm very sure rental companies do not act as agents for the govt, and why would they want to.
They aren't even prevented from re-entering the country with the debt as immigration is a federal body and isn't an agent for state govt debt collection either. The only problem would be getting re-licenced in a state you have debt would probably not be possible. In NSW the ultimate penalty for non-payment of any state govt debt is just to cancel your driver's licence.

This one specifically for Americans especially for speeding because of the units that they’re measured in

"...you could just say I'm not paying it. What are they going to do?" Steve, it's Italy. They have a fairly famous record of debt collection. The term "how do you like your knees?" comes to mind. Me, I'm probably going to pay. There are worse things than points on your license. 😊

why does there unwillingness to pay out of town fines not affect your credit? you do something stupid you should pay for it. if you dot that definitely shows a willingness to not pay bills you owe. those are valid questions about you.

I got a speeding ticket in my email long after I returned from Iceland $485 dollars! They want me to give them my credit card info which is the worst thing thing to do.. plus Iceland was a bucket list and I’m not planning to go back and much less rent any cars there.. what’s the worst that can happen? I still have 3 weeks to decide

  • @roxcyn

Go back to the rental paperwork. Was the $60 ish dollars all the tickets or just the rental ding for getting tickets? Also, you need to learn basic rules in their county if you intend on driving yourself.

    Some "border cases":
    - if you collect enough penalty points in some EU countries you might be banned to drive in that specific country, in some cases permanently until you pass psychological-medical evaluation; on the spot police might confiscate in some cases driving license and vehicle, even if it's not yours (in some countries)
    - if you reside in most EU countries (and some neighbours) tickets from other EU countries will come and be enforced in your home country
    - the above applies regardless if the vehicle is yours or rental
    - in most world countries including most of EU and North America a judgement against you can be executed in another country

How can the credit report company prove it was me? Even the police cannot prove it since it is a photo ticket? If I dispute the debt to the credit report companies they have to remove it.

waiting for my swiss tickets to show up that will ask for my income and net worth due to very high assumed speeds and unknown penalty system. I expect i'll have no choice but to ignore and not pay these as it'll be in the 10's of 1000's in total fines for a 5 day trip. The speed cameras are not great for this reason, if you get one ticket, you're likely to slow down, if you have no idea you passed a speed camera and got caught, you're likely to get caught at the next one 10-20km down the road, and the next and the next.

My wife and I visited Italy in April 2024. Just today Dec 10, 2024), I received a ticket for driving in a pedestrian zone while in Ferrara. The letter was dated Oct 11, 2024. We had 5 days from that date to pay 88 euros. Now we must pay 113 euros. In case of nonpayment, the letter says I will pay 196 euros in taxes (presumably if I ever go back to the EU). This is just another way that Italy scams their visitors, who have already spent thousands. No thanks.

Easy if you start getting hate mail tell the credit or debit card company that you have lost the card they'll issue you a new one with different numbers boom Italy is pretty much out of luck, is it moral? Perhaps not. Is it possible? Absolutely.
