- This week we talk about the Demon Barber Sweeney Todd, and compare the stage musical to the 2007 Johnny Depp film. Topics include questioning whether or not Judge Turpin is really that evil, the romance between Todd and Lovett, and whether less is more when it comes to the use of blood. It's a bloody fun show!
I see the song "Wait" as demonstrating Mrs. Lovett thinking she can control Sweeney, thinking she can make him love her and he will listen to her. It lulls her into a false sense of security, which she keeps even when the start of "Epiphany" shows that she can't actually calm his mania.
There is a motif that plays at various parts of the show that Sondheim calls Sweeny's maddnes motif that plays during epiphany. You hear the same theme in the background of wait which is a good way to show that although Mrs Lovett has temporarily calmed Sweeny down, that maddnes is still there growing in the background and there is nothing she can do about it
@stinkywhale897 the madness motiff is also played at a slower tempo and on a music box/celeste during Wait if I'm not mistaken. Which sets up my favorite moment if the whole show when, right after Sweeney belted out "Never come again" the madness motiff comes right back playing double time to show how its swallowing him up.

I think Wait is in every production because in Epiphany Todd sings "You told me to wait, now he'll never come again!" but if she never told him to wait, the continuity would be a bit broken
Idk. She tells him throughout the play to hold back to hesitate and to wait. Weather she says it outward or not I'd have to watch again. But she holds him back from approaching the Beatle at the market. She convinces him not to end Toby. It's not until they come up with a clear way to dispose of bodies that she says ok do what you do. I think the criticism that the love story between Joanna and Anthony is cliched and weak (which it is) comes from a person who can't have paid much attention to the text and the lyrics and hasn't gotten it at all. When you actually listen to these "annoying useless songs" green finch and linnet Bird and Kiss me, you would notice that the love story is not only a parody of cliched romances, a fact which is especially clear in the exquisite lyrics to Kiss Me, but also just an escape clause for Joanna. She desperately wants to flee, and possibly only uses Anthony as a way to escape the judge, choosing the less crazy though boring option instead. This is also made apparent in Kiss Me and Green Finch and Linnet Bird.
Also, the "missing villain developement" is also in my opinion a weak critique. Turpins character is explored in the Joanna reprise, in Pretty women and in Ladies in their sensitivities. Sadly, his creepy, pretty sexual villain song Mea Culpa was cut from the stage version, can although still be heard on the album. That song in particular explores him very deeply and gives his character a real Frollo vibe, with his fear of God's wrath etc.
I love this musical, every song is a gem, every word in the script has it's place.
AdrianAFilmmaker Johanna Mea culpa is a really good song, but it is disturbing I’ll give it that. But Turpin is supposed to make you uncomfortable. Definitely Hellfire vibes. That’s probably because it’s both about people mourning lust for others. During the ‘It’s not my fault’ part of Hellfire. It says ‘Mea culpa’ and ‘Mea maxima culpa’ in the background. Very similar songs. It’s strange that Hellfire is never cut (probably because it’s perfect and the best villain song ever) how ever Johanna Mea culpa pretty much always is. True it’s a little bit more clear what it’s about than Hellfire but still.
I mean yea you have to be pretty smart and pay attention to things that might be grating otherwise, to get the layers in this musical. And also, not judge by the film which has none of those layers.
Green Finch and Linnet Bird is one of my favourite songs of all time. The metaphor isn’t exactly clever, but the vocals oh my. She also uses the word ‘whence’ correctly, how could I not love her and her music?
I'd say that the metaphor is not clever because Joana is not very clever either. It's on purpose.

Sweeney Todd actually is an urban legend lol. The story is super old, although the musical kind of adds more depth and expands the story. The legend basically just talks about Todd killing people and making meat pies from the bodies.
I think the song "Wait" is meant to hint at Lovett knowing the whole truth and knowing that Sweeney's wife is actually alive (etc) and wanting to basically keep Todd to herself because she knows things won't end well. And also, kind of as a sense of foreshadowing for the audience to know things won't end well too. And in regards to "By the Sea" in the film, I always assumed it looked so different and out of place because it is all Lovett's imagination.
Also, are those clips of Meat Loaf as Sweeney???? If it is, I never realized I wanted to hear something so badly.
I never understood the d'aaaaw appeal of the song "Johanna" (not the reprise, the reprise is great) in context of the story, because we JUST learned that the Judge didn't just get Benjamin framed and out of the way, but *raped* Lucy, Johanna's mother. Then following that revelation with this rando just spying on this girl at a distance and just immediately "I'll steal you, Johanna" and all the obstacles and barrier he's going to go through to *have her.* It made me immediately think "Oh, noooooo, it's the Judge all over again" and I'm actually surprised that it wasn't actually foreshadow anything untoward because we don't really know anything about Anthony other than being a chipper good sailor guy, but Todd was Benjamin once too. But *BUT* Johanna seems to be the only song that doesn't have the Deis Irae death/vengence motif, so I guess Anthony is in the clear and actually DOES have a good heart, despite how his song could have such sinister double meaning in the context of the rest of the world and story.
I think it's supposed to be kind of sad. It's true that Anthony didn't have any bad intentions (that we can see in the musical itself), but the desperation of the whole situation, that Johanna's situation is so desperate that it makes sense for her to want to run off with the first adventurer who laid eyes on her, despite not having anything in common with him except the fact that... well, he wants her.... I think that whole circumstance is supposed to be sinister. Not necessarily the characters themselves, but the surrounding environment.
What many fans of the broadway versions seem to fail to understand is Tim's vision with the characters:
Johnny and Helena never meant to replicate George or Angela; they wanted a new, fresh approach with Sweeney and Lovett: And that's what doubters of the movie fail to understand or accept.
If you like George's and Angela's portrayal of the characters, that's fine; but expecting a full copy for the cinematic version is unrealistic. A more goofy, upbeat version of such dark themes wouldn't work on the big screen.

I thought that was an odd take, too: I don't think there's anything in the lyric to suggest that. It's important to set up Sweeney's indifference to his daughter, because he later callously uses her as bait in a trap for the judge, but there's no reason to assume he wants her dead.
The songs the beadle signs playing the little organ are pointless plot-wise, but they create a moment of tension since Mrs. Lovett just locked Toby in the basement and the beadle can hear sing, and you don't know if he's going to check the basement at some point.
On the other hand, the song "Wait" is what makes Seeeney take his time before killing the judge, why wouldn't he kill the judge immediately? Because Mrs. Lovett told him to he patient.
I want him to listen to a show that you hate like rent

In my opinion, the "wait" song is VERY important. It can actually be seen as the final catalyst in Todd's massacre. If Mrs. Lovett hadn't told Todd to wait and savor the moment, he would have gone with his instincts and killed the Judge right away. He'd have been dead long before Antony barged in and Sweeny wouldn't have had his big breakdown. No epiphany required. Even in the song, Epiphany Todd makes it clear "You told me to wait, now he'll never come again!"
Also, I think you're being a little too charitable to Turpin??? He's a sexual pervert who intended to marry a girl he'd raised since she was an infant and clearly her rejection of him didn't dissuade him since he decides to try again after a shave and some cologne. (As if that would make a difference.)
Joanna feels like she's being forced into the marriage. In the song Kiss me she says "He means to marry me Monday" as if the issue has already been decided. Turpin already assumes that he can get Joanna to agree, regardless of her rejection. And when she tries to run away (the fact that he can legally marry her probably means she's more or less an adult and should legally be allowed to leave) the judge locks her in an asylum for it. Possibly for almost a year if I'm understanding the lyrics "Will we be married on Sunday? That's what you promised, Married on Sunday! That was last August!" from the city of fire song before the finale. And asylums/mental hospitals were one of the most hellish places on earth back then.
The judge abuses his authority to do that to her. He's ruthless about it, too.
Personally, I have no doubt that he sent Todd away, if not on entirely false charges then on even the slightest charges, as a way of punishing Lucy for not accepting his advances. It's perfectly in character. But even if he didn't rape lucy and send Todd away of false charges, he's still a heinous person hiding behind his position in the law to do evil things. (Though the movie does come across as heavy-handed in its attempts to make him look even more villainous.)
But I've rambled too long, sorry, lol

Another late response, but I also think that if they heard the cut song the Judge had, they might of changed their tune, as that song is probably just as heavy handed as the film is on what kind of person Turpin is.
Late response too but I totally agree. I was kinda appaled when they said Turpin wasn't that bad because while watching the musical he made me so Uncomfortable and I hate his song for it so much 😣
"Wait" is extremely important: it is because of her persuasion that Todd does, indeed, wait when the Judge appears. He doesn't kill him immediately: he decides to savor the moment, and because of that he loses that moment, spins into complete insanity, and sends the second act in motion. Without "Wait", the judge would have been killed before Act I, Johanna and Toby would have come together, and may possibly have had a reunion with Todd. No meat pies, no murders, no killing of the Beggar woman. Without "Wait", you have a one-act musical.
No "Pretty Women" song without "Wait": there'd be no incentive for Todd to decide to go there.

The ad for Sweeney Todd is my favourite ad for any show ever...aside from the one for Carrie because it has like nothing to do with the show but it's still creepy and incredibly 80's. I also loved how many different proshots you used :D (speaking of proshots where did you get the proshot for Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton?! I need that in my life)
I'm really liking this series so far because I like the varying opinions between someone familiar and unfamiliar with music theatre. It's nice having these perspectives.

Oh, person on the internet you have no idea! ;) I'm a walking Carrie the Musical encyclopedia. I love that show! The original's disjointed and often ridiculous, yes, but the Carrie/Margaret stuff is AMAZING and the chemistry in the Broadway version is just palpable. I really hate it when people think there's no point to its existence, when the creators saw an opera and found that they could tell this story in that sort of style. It's such a shame that style isn't consistent, and that the rest of the story kind of fell by the wayside. They felt Carrie and Margaret's relationship was worth telling that way, and the actors really put their all into showing that. The revival's pretty great too but I feel like it's lacking something. I think the real intentions for the show lie in the '84 workshop.
AND that's just scratching the surface!
Carrie will totally be a choice during the Halloween times if I can find a decent video of it.
There's a recording of the full show when it opened in London but tbh it's not the best example of the show. The Broadway soundboard audio is the best imo. You can find the 2012 revival pretty easy, though :)
So far, nobody has mentioned the fact that Mrs. Lovett had a huge crush on Sweeney Todd when he was Benjamin Barker. She was basically the only one who recognized him. When he returned to London, and she told him what happened to his wife. Mrs. Lovett had her I on Lucy‘s husband. She wanted Todd for a long time. So when he returns, and now she’s a widow because her poor Albert has died, and Lucy after poisoning herself has some mental health issues, she turns out to be the worst villain of them all. Because she could have told Todd what Lucy was like. Lucy herself came into the restaurant several times and she was always telling Toby to throw the old woman out. I just wonder what might’ve happened if Mrs. Lovett had put her own desire aside. If she truly loved Todd, she could have reunited them or tried to. I think it’s rather odd that she recognized Todd but he did not recognize her until it was too late. I hope Joanna and Anthony got away safely. Who is up for a sequel? Anthony.
No for real, Mrs. Lovett betrayed Lucy in the same way Judge Turpin betrayed Sweeney Todd years ago, she just had the good graces to not also be a sexual predator

In the song Mea Culpa, which isn't in the film and isn't often in performances, Turpin is spying on Johanna. He basically skeets while chastising himself & praying for deliverance from being attracted to his sexy stolen "adopted" daughter.

Exactly. In fact, it’s the fact that he sings about the exact opposite while killing people that makes the song so jarring to the audience. The uncanny feeling while watching a man slit peoples throats and singing about some day seeing her again, or if not, that would be okay too.
These guys don’t quite get that the point of the song is that dramatic irony. Sweeney is hopeful while singing, but killing at the same time. They don’t get that so they automatically assume he has to be singing about killing her.
I like the intro bit a lot. Keep these up. They're really entertaining.

Wait was kept in because it shows how mrs lovett thinks she can use and control Sweeney. Lovett is a narcissist; she lies to Sweeney because of her selfish affection for him, and she exploits his murderous tendencies to get more money.
Judge Turpins solo song (known as mea culpa) definitely deserved to be cut. The song does an EXCELLENT job at making the audience despise him, but it’s a bit too good at that. While the show certainly has dark tones, Mea Culpa goes wayyy too far for the dark comedy feel of the show. for those who don’t know Mea Culpa is a song sung by Judge Turpin as he spies on Johanna through a keyhole. He sexualizes her body and talks abt how he can see her body through her dress, all while whipping himself as a form of masturbation. The song ends with a belted note which is meant to be an org*sm. Reminder that Johanna is SIXTEEN while Judge Turpin is an old man.
if mrs lovett doesnt sing "wait" it doesnt make any sense for sweeney to take his time with the judge during "pretty women", he would just immediately slit his throat otherwise

Here’s a thought. Mrs. Lovett song wait. It wasn’t an unnecessary song. You see, what love it wants more than anything else is Todd. She expresses annoyance with him by saying you’re always brooding away on your wrongs can’t you think of anything else. She wants Her Seaside paradise with her “gay young Blade “. She’s been in love with Todd for years. Lucy is pretty much out of the picture and so she’s singing that song to calm him down and hopefully if she can be subtle enough, beautiful enough, whatever enough, he will forget Lucy and turned to her. Basically what tore this family apart was the judge, or the judge and his beetle, depending on whether you watch the movie or the stage play, The judge or a judge in his beetle was lusting after another man’s wife, and Mrs. love it was lasting for another woman’s husband. That’s what tour this family apart. And that’s what this song weight is about in my humble opinion. It’s Mrs. Lovett once again trying to divert him from thinking about his former family and getting together with her. She wants to help him find Joanna of course because Joanne is not a threat. Johanna is his daughter. She’s OK with that. But anything that pulls him back to Lucy, and you’ve got admit the judge is no sweetheart. But I think Mrs. Lovett is a worse villain than here.

And I love the Johanna reprise! The movie adaptation is a great stage to screen casting wise I don't care for a whole lot but it's still worth watching! Especially if it's the first movie musical you've seen.

The repraise of johanna is not of sweeney fixating on killing his daughter. The rntire somg is him lementing over not having his entire family. About how shes the past stitch of it and of how he may not be able to handle seeing her as she would look too much loke her mother. It would drive away what last bits of sanity hes clinging to and hes very well aware of that which is why he does not want to meet her again. He does look forward to reuniting his family in the here after but that is not him saying i want to kill my daughter then myself and we can all be together again its just him giving himself something to look forward to in his final moments. Lucy sings about the stench from the bakehouse and how its permeating all of london. Its the stench of evil because its the smell of burning and rotting bodies very much a refrence to the bubonic plague when we would burn bodies by the hundreds because too many people were dieong too quickly

As for swerney and johanna in the last scene yeah he tries to slit her theoat but hes built up with pamic he does not see what hes doing or whose under his knife. Shes dressed as a sailor boy she has a young face her hair is completely hidden. In sweeneys mind hes tieonf up lose ends because this young sailor just watched as he killed the judge. Nobody was given time to explain "im your daughter" aside from that she was never intrduced to her father so the only hope of recognision is through sweeney who last saw rhis child at the tender age if infancy.

Are you lidding? I feel green finch and linnet bird is one of those key songs. Something nessessary in the plot. Sure shes plot B but she is something sweeney os after. Well something lovet is after and shes working through sweeney to obtain her. But the song tells a lot for johannas character. First shes questioning how something so beautiful so trapped still has courage to sing. Is it for wages? Is it because life is easier this way? Larks refuse to sing wjen captured outright refuse. We learn that she wants to maintaon courage even if she must remain trapped and come the end of the somg we learn that the bird handlers blind the birds and not knowing day from noght thell somg till dead. Its a parody of johanna. Shes blond and trapped and just wants freedom she will sinf and search until death if she has to to obtain what she most desires. Which is funny enough because her very next song sings ablit how she would take poison to avoid marrage to her adopted father. The moment shes out of her cage its nothing but fighting and fluttering for her. Even in her last moments before being rushed to sweeneys it was johanna who took the gun from anthony and shot the proprieter of the mad house. Her sonf sets her character up, describes her character to us, presents her to the potential love interest and sets up the entire B plot of the movie. Freeing and obtaining johanna which for her is mainly freedom from a cage.
Mrs lovets by the sea. Why would she want that with him? Shes spent over 15 years pining for this mans affections. Shes likely watched his relationship with lucy from the get go and saw how luch hw adored her. Lovet wanting that for herself of course captures that type of memory and pedistulizes sweeney in that image. She thinks he will be that way with me one day so long as i keep helping him heal. I dont know if u subjected yourself to love never dies yer bur meg very much embodies the heart of lovet.

Both women know what their lovw interests are capable of expressing and thats what their trying to get access to. But its very much a case of "if he wanted to he would"
So in the end its not that she wants that fantasy life with our current mr todd. What she wants is that fantasy with Benjamin barker. Problem being Benjamin barker is dead.
Hopefully next week, Bare the Pop Opera will be on the list next week! But i vote Rent for this week.

Unpopular opinion but I do not like Lansbury in this role at all! I know she originated it and had a hand in the creation of Lovett as we know her. However I think her portrayal is just TOO dotty and performative. She seems to be evil more by happenstance than by her own accord. Most of the lines and lyrics I felt she was just reciting rather than thinking through and feeling. I like a Lovett with a few more wheels turning.

Frankly the movie stinks. Depp's no musical star, and his overdone doing another weird turn became extremely tiresome. bonham carter made some interesting choices but they nearly ALL underdeliver. they destroyed the score and the numbers. You want a good adaptation of a great musical? Hedwig, Hamilton, Cabaret. this one not even close, about as halfbaked as Into the Woods....
The other day I saw the revival with Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford. I really enjoyed it, like a lot. Although Josh Groban was amazing, I think Annaleigh Ashford lowkey carried (sue me). Before seeing it, I had never seen a stage production of Sweeney Todd, I had only seen the movie. The songs were really good, but I think my one of my favorite segments was “city on fire.” The movie version of this scene was tense, but I was actually scared for Toby. There was a haunting tone that Josh and Annaleigh set as they sing while they look for Toby in the basement. I was not expecting the jumpscare. Anyway, moral of the story, it’s really good and you should see it💀🔪🩸🥧
