Thanks for sharing this. I tackled the issue with Sophia touchstones by only taking 1 class that has touchstones at a time while going through the classes without touchstones more quickly.
So thankful to have found this channel. I have a job I like but would love a college degree for more flexibility and the biggest hesitation for me has always been time. The idea of having a full time job a kid a wife and then doing college for four years is so daunting. Had no idea options like this existed
I was worried about the grading thing for Sophia, BUT the last 3 touchstones were graded and feedback given within 24 hrs or less 🙏🙏🙏 so grateful! And I loved this advice I took from you to find a Sophia class with a touchstone and then another without so I could always keep working on a class! 😊😊😊 This Saturday makes 3 full weeks and 18 credits completed 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Why is just the monthly $99 dollar subscription of Sophia mentioned when comparing prices? You could actually save more money w/ Sophia if you signed up for the 4 month subscription that only costs $299, which would then actually save someone an extra $99 dollars. Some people may need more time than others, for whatever reason, to complete course credits. You could even save HALF of your money if you are someone who REALLY will need more time/flexibility in order to complete course credits by signing up for Sophia’s 1 year subscription that only costs $599 dollars. I think these are key points that should also be factored in, especially when doing a comparison of price options between Sophia & other online programs for college credits.
@@CollegeHacked I have just started using Alison & all the courses you take are 100% free. Only thing you pay for is ur certificate and/or diploma after you finish a course. IMO, Alison is a really great site to utilize. Most other sites are fully focused more on gen ed classes to take, and maybe some introduction classes as well. With Alison, you find the career you want, select it, & then right after, a bunch of classes/courses will pop up on the screen for you to choose from. All of the courses that are provided at that time are a part of the learning curriculum of that specific career path you chose. For example, I chose substance abuse councilor on Alison because that's what I want to do & so far I took a course on knowing what the signs and/or symptoms look like on an individual & how to help, then I took another course that had to do w/ substance abuse & suicide. I finished both & those were certificate classes, HOWEVER, they also have Diploma classes/courses to choose from. For example, I'm currently now taking The Diploma in Mental Health class/course, & it ranges anywhere from 10-15 hours to complete, which I also think is another great feature w/ Alison. there is an estimated time of how long it will take to complete each course. Alison, like others, is also self paced.
@@2Blessed2BeStressedAlison is awesome for continuing education or personal learning (I am actually currently learning about 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines on Alison for fun!), but aren’t accepted as transfer credit to accredited colleges.
@@rez7287 Not sure actually. I’ve only done milestone classes, no touchstone written submissions. I’ll likely enroll in English II at Pima Community College where it will cost $274. No sense in paying $960 for it at my ‘main school’ SNHU.
SDC is so expensive. You can do as mang courses as you want in a month but it's like a $235 flat fee that includes 2 proctored tests, but you can take 3 more proctored tests for $70 a piece. Its absolutely insane. Sophia is way better for $99/month or $299/4 months. Saylor also needs to be talked about because I know WGU allows some Saylor credits while are low cost and then just a fee for the proctored test. Some of the SDC courses are also on Saylor which is a way better deal
The reason study is still necessary for now is because sophia only has about 60 courses and they cover mainly general education content. Study has hundreds of classes and covers deeper material normally found in the major section of a degree. Saylor is fabulous, but not as widely accepted as the other two for now. As they gain momentum we’ll talk about them more. While study might seem expensive, consider that the average college course is $1,200 :)
I finished the Intro to Psychology 1 on Sophia. I couldn’t find their second psychology course so I asked them about it and they said it’s an old course and not on their website anymore. (Why? And do you know if they will be adding a second psychology class in the near future?) I almost finished their History 1 class. I’m waiting for them to grade the touchstone. The touchstone was fun but long. With these added touchstones on many of their courses you can no longer finish courses as quickly as you used to be able to.
Very true, and they are always adding more touchstones. There’s a second psychology course called Lifespan development, not sure if they’ll be adding more in the future but Study.com has a bunch.
The learning management system a school uses isn’t typically important enough to factor into your decision to attend there or not. :) Nursing programs online are typically RN to BSN programs-where you need to earn an RN first. WGU has a great one that will take you through RN too though.
I was looking for a video exactly like this. I’m current enrolled in Information Systems (66/120) at Liberty and was considering changing to Business Administration (78/120)
U didn’t say anything about to their charges? Cost, how is the fees paid. Is it a flat monthly rate and or we pay the monthly rate n still pay for each course?
I suck at Math and prefer an open Book to earn credits for WGU, when taking the final exam. I want to pursue a degree in Network Engineering. What Courses on Sophia would you recommend on top of any other quick easy courses. I'm 55 now and haven't been in school in years and would like to finish all this as quickly as I can?
Can’t wait to start the semester at UMPI 🤓📚. July 3rd with 97 units transferred . I pretty much only have my upper class units remaining and MATH 140. By the way , does anyone know if MATH 140 can be taken on Sophia ? 😅
Would you have any knowledge or advise for me who has an AA in business but wanting to go into WGU for teaching elementary? I am kind of trying to figure out which classes to take at Sophia to also transfer to WGU to save time and money.
If your end goal is an elementary education degree at WGU, don’t get an AA elsewhere, most of it won’t transfer :) If you search “WGU partners page” they post equivalency charts for you to use!
Has anyone ever done Udemy courses? Trying to explain to someone that they don't appear to be at least ACE accredited so that would hurt them as most colleges won't accept it
I am not sure if it is just me or the options I choose when calling SDC. The transfer me to voicemail. Then when I leave a message they only email back . They refuse to call or let you speak with an agent . Also with the 2 exam limit you will get charged 235 every month and if you have like thirty credits the total comes out the same as if you are going to a tradition college .
@CollegeHacked this is basically my question as well. I have no credits and want to start a program to get my BA. So I start with Sophia then transfer over?
Sophia exams are not proctored. You pass the courses by completing the required assignments :) Sophia does not charge for exams, it’s only $99 a month for as many courses as you can complete.
I’m just about to start Sophia and I had us history I and II I’ll probably not take U.S. history II and replace it with something else like nutrition. Seems like a quick course. No touchstones!
Hi, thanks for your informative video. If I am a member, can I preview the questions in each CHALLENGE and EXERCISE MILESTONE? Thanks for your reply in advance.
Speaking for residents of poor countries that have a full month's earnings equal to one course/month fee of sophia, study, straighterline, is there any advice? I don't think any give discounts or scholarships nor we have an alternative.
There is, just probably not much of anything for the major section. But general education and free electives make up about half the degree, so definitely still possible.
As long as it takes you to complete it! It’s competency based, meaning as soon as you pass the required quizzes/tests/papers/projects you move forward. There are no set timelines for the classes and no deadlines.
Trying to hack college for kids that are highschoolers. Help, please :). Also, as an adult who has derailed everything to homeschool, would love an opportunity to rebuild a usable degree.

And if you want to get a masters', you need those good good letters of recommendation (among other things). Considering that, I'm... _weary_ of using sites like this to cram through courses, because I'd think what you want, more than anything, is presence. At least a name that comes up relatively often and has some small chance to stick in someone's mind, at least if you remind them.

Great comparison and great recommendation. Can you do a topic on WGU 's program for ages 14 to 18. They recently began with about 500 students in the pilot.
