Because of the corona lockdown we can't travel, so I dug into my archives in search of some old footage.
In this video we go back to 2015/2016 when we explored these giant French naval ships called the Aconit and Duguay-Trouin. They were towed to the ship cemetery in november 2014.

It makes a really cool sound effect 🎉

I was flight deck crewman on DUGUAY-TROUIN (1991). We has two LYNX helicopters. Thanks for the tour ! Lots of memories :-)
I guess "the biggest room" where they slept/cooked was the hangar for those Lynx helicopters? Am I correct?`
And I guess it must be interesting to see this video after all these years.
@@MT-yp3tp yes it is the hangar. i wasnt on the ship but i can tell from other ships

The haunting emptiness of this vast and complex ship flooded me with feelings of nostalgia, wastefulness and wonder. I couldn’t look away. Goosebumps all over my body every time they entered the ship’s hospital, and completely off the charts when the operating table came to life 😬
It is located in Landevenec warship cemetary. When i was a teen (30 yrs ago) i used to sail into this sea river to sneak around those beauty. Good to see what was inside. Thx pal
Olivier, tu as vu dans les toutes dernières images, la gendarmerie nationale qui venait marauder?? Ils ont du prendre une sacrée ardoise!!!
Pareil. Je me demandais ce qu'il y avait dedans a chaque fois que je passais devant. 😀
You should have checked under the visor to see if they'd left the ignitions keys in !
I used to work on Oil Rigs back in the 80's. The biggest loss of life (excluding explosions like Piper A) was Hydrogen Sulphide, H2S from stagnant sea water. In low concentrations it smells like rotton eggs, in higher concentrations you cannot smell it and it will kill you. We Always used H2S and O2 detectors before going into confined spaces.
35:33 that is the scariest face I have ever seen.
So glad to see you guys FINALLY getting the subscriber growth you deserve. Your videos have been awesome for a looooong time.

I am wearing headphones and I thought the heartbeat was my own for a few seconds. Weird feeling!
same here wtf
That's great you took the footage of the engine rooms and boiler rooms and gear box rooms, the engine control console is huge, great video.
Just got your 1st book for my Birthday and was thrilled - love your exploration videos but the still shots are something else, so much detail to explore in each one. Looking forward to the places you get to explore when this crazy world stops being quite so crazy.
Absolute respect to you guys.
Thank you for your efforts in showing us what is out there.
You gotta love your job, exploring, making videos and getting paid in the process! Newly subscribed.
Thanks for subscribing, you just saw 1 of the worst episodes ever, uploaded during covid, when I could not travel. This is really old footage never intended to be uploaded. I returned to other ships at the same spot (episode will be online soon) And this is a better episode about another cool ship: ruclips.net/video/TsZqdXJsRk8/видео.html Too be honest I have to work 18h a day and do other things as well to finance this life style :)
Now imagine pushing it back into the water, firing up the boilers and just sailing it around: "OI FRENCHIES, YOU FORGOT YOUR SHIPS"
Deck hatches are the most overlooked entrances and also the easiest to get into. When you see the diagrams of the ship those are important as they can tell you where you are and where you need to go to get to other places. Each deck (level) has its own plan so it is easy to find your way around. If you know the compartment numbering system it is even easier to get to where you want to go. Also above the entry to each space (room) there is a corresponding number to the chart or diagram so you can find out where you are at any time. It will also let you know where the closest escape routs are and the various hatches to different levels.
I hope that this will help you in further endeavors.
Such an eary feeling, just imagine the things them ships have seen and now nothing
The photography is so good that most of the stuff is still usable and almost new.
Imagine those flashlights stop working suddenly and you don't know where you came from in that dark maze.

You're right. It is foolish to go around in these things without a multi-gas detector.

Not only that, those ships are full of asbestos!
Plus the metal corrosion (oxidation) can consume the oxygen
@@chipjumper or a canary :) budget gas detection
@@juanmanuelortego8896 contrary to popular belief, asbesto containing materials do not become airborne spontaneously, that is, it is only during a breaking or abrasion moment that the particles can somewhat become suspended in the air, and the real danger lies in the fabrication/repair/disposal of the materials.
Roof asbesto shingles are an extreme case that are very exposed to the elements, quickly loosing protective layers and then eroding with the wind. Even so, it is only during their breakage that significant ammounts of asbestos can be released and inhaled.
Several French RUclipsrs already did videos about this ship and in result were in trouble with French justice and forced to remove the video. Just so you know what to expect
the engine room pictures are phenomenal
Anyone else wearing headphones hear his heartbeat? Adds to the suspense and excitement
Haha kinda funny and scary too

Now any confined environment without air circulation can accumulate gases.
At a minimum these guys should have a multi gas to check for flammable or toxic gases beyond what is allowed.
Yea when they said any hole can be a entrance i am thinking I know nothing happened but dead zones. There was a ship in the Atlantic (cannot remember name) but there was a storm so they went in to secure the chain (banging around). I think 3 people died going in due to them not having any air in there.

But, It Was Cool Watching All.

Wow always great content I want to thank you guys for inspiring me to try urbex. Although in my town there’s no abandoned war ships we do have some interesting things.
42:52 is the boiler room, specifically the burner front area and a hub of activity for the boilermen. The labyrinth of pipes and valves were necessary to precisely control the pressure and temperature of the fuel to each burner to maximize efficiency.
The next photo shows 2 large gray boxes (coffret) that contain some automated instrumentation devices, the proto beginnings of 'ABC', 'Automatic Boiler Control', which is a fully matured electronic technology today.
Between the boxes is a small cabinet that most likely contained a phone that connected with the main engine room. Above the cabinet is a clip board holder where one would find the shift schedule, the night orders and probably a menu from the dining galley.
This little space is hauntingly abandoned in these photos, but in its day, it was occupied by multiple people at once and was a very lively and busy place.
Thanks for your info! This is shitty footage not made to be uploaded. I went back to the same place/other ships and maybe can use a bit of the info. I also went to explore other ships which are decently filmed😁

Brilliant stuff lads, really like this (and all your vids) - great photography and an element of suspense on occasion too helps! Prima jonges
Prachtige docu.

Very cool ! Fantastic images
not this week, but next week I'll post an epic video of another (even cooler) navy ship with better video quality :)
Hello, I am French, I love your super quality videos but I have a warning to give to those who would like to try the experience. A fairly well-known RUclipsr in France has already visited these ships a year or two ago. It is a military site placed under the protection of the French National Navy and the RUclipsr in question had the obligation to withdraw its video under penalty of heavy legal proceedings. The ships are still equipped with secret defense classified equipment. This site is therefore monitored 24 hours a day by armed soldiers from the Navy. In short, all of this to warn that it is extremely dangerous to venture onto this site. Protection has also been reinforced since the visit of the French RUclipsr
EN Actually the Mamytwink video is still on RUclips and is viewable in all countries except France. I just watched it from the USA. || FR En fait la vidéo de Mamytwink est toujours sur RUclips, elle n’est bloquée qu’en France et est visible dans tous les autres pays. Je viens de la regarder ici aux USA.
As a former USN sailor in the 1980’s I highly doubt anything still aboard these ships is any kind of secret technology. Some may well still be classified but in reality this old tech was eclipsed decades ago! So no state secrets to accidentally divulge but certainly a risk of legal action by the French authorities who know how dangerous old decomposing vessels can be. Very nice footage OP! These French ships look very pleasant and clean. They are very similar to USN vessels of the Cold War era!
thank you your videos are amazing

I was thinking the same, if you look at the pipes, where they are wrapped, you easily can find pure asbestos fibers inside, especially in the engine room area.Asbestos was a typical insulation material, other than a heat barrier, back in the 50's and 60's. There was an ffp3 mask on a table at some moment during the video, someone else was smarter, thinking about safety...next time wear a mask, everyone has a mask on in this time...
And gloves! That's exploring 101. Especially in an environment like this with jagged, rusted metal everywhere. An infected cut could do serious damage.
Asbestos can be a problem, but the lead is not going to jump at you, is it

I`ve read that these ships often get used as targets for marine exercises in the ocean. And i don`t think that these ships are`nt any more seaworthy. They just need some diesel to get the engines running..
For being used as a target ship, the fuel tanks to be completely empty ,also all other tanks should be oil free, as all ships carries tonnes of fuel mostly in the double bottom tanks. It's usually cleaned and oilfre ed, surveyed by a surveyor, then it's towed with a tug to the firing exercise zone. To avoid marine pollution, MARPOL.
