Just a slight nitpick: Asuka wasn't a maid. She was the host of the documentary/art restorer(and a total diva). Akiko was a producer, but maybe the motherly vibe she gave out made her better suited as a nurse in the game.
Great video, Derek--this is the second Sweet Home video I've watched today! I'm definitely going to pick this up on the Famicom...your work here was the final nudge I needed. ;) Anyway, excellent information and skits...loved the humorous yet appropriate Halloween-themed ending, too. It's just a shame you had to collab with that Avalanche Reviews guy. XD
BenevolentDick Yeah, I remember you saying in one of your videos that you liked Sweet Home. Maybe someday I'll do a game/movie crossover review. The game and movie look pretty...sweet. Avalanche Reviews Jelly? I ain't no jelly, I'm a slime, SON! Get your RPG enemies straight man!
Sweet Home is actually the only reproduction I own. It's definitely an i interesting game and I had no idea it had so many close ties to Resident Evil. Great Halloween episode guys.
Dude! You outdone yourself. I nearly said that at the 15 sec mark but I thought I'd watch the whole thing first... That sound engineering was stellar and I haven't actually heard of this game... I went to check it out on eBay then remembered I sold my NES anyway :) Still, great video
Leftover Culture Review Bummer! Well fortunately I think you and I both know of ways around such limitations! And after this episode, you could say I've become a bit more intimately familiar with the workings of Audacity. ;)
Haha, well, yeah, there's 'methods'... And Audacity is well worth learning. I really liked the special effects and the script, but the sound did really stand out (especially on RUclips). Obviously you put a lot of work into these :)
Really awesome video you two! This is one I'll have to watch a few times. Thanks for recognizing Capcom's first RPG, Derek! I'm not a survival horror fan, but I do love RPGs; so this game gets my vote. I never finished it. I should get back to playing it. If I can find my cartridge... Good choice for a Halloween episode. I love the feel of NES RPGs. Something about the graphics, music, sound and creative gameplay that just does it for me. This game is like top of the line for that.
Thanks man! I've been meaning to correct that little hiccup from my BoF1 review for a while now. It's good to finally get that one set straight! I've never been big into survival horror either, but Sweet Home may not be a bad introduction to the genre. :)
Sweet Home review?... Sweet. ;) I love this game. It has become one of my favorites for the NES... Well, I guess it technically isn't for the NES... Anyway, I love the mix of survival horror and RPG mechanics. Such a great experience, one that I definitely wouldn't expect from a Famicom/NES title. I played through the game with my wife recently from start to finish, and we watched the movie after it was over (my first time watching the movie, actually). Good times, good times. I think that you hit the nail on the head about the story itself not being the best part, but the way the story is presented and unfolds before the player. Well said and great review! Awesome pairing up with Avalanche Reviews. :)
Awesome videos man! Been binge watching all your stuff the past few days, subbed and am a new fan. Question, if you could help me out, what do you use to record your videos? A camera to record yourself, and a video card for gameplay? I’m interested in getting started reviewing myself, need to do something with all the hours I put in games.
Huh, I had heard murmurings of this Sweet Home game, but knew virtually nothing about it or its connection to survival horror. Very interesting stuff. Also that 40 seconds of blackness at the end left me seriously unnerved.
Super Derek Hahaha! I wasn't sure if it was or not, so I kept watching expecting a jump that never came. XD But I guess that is the true essence of horror. Its not about what's there, rather what your mind concocts in the absence of something. You can file this one under "happy accidents". =D
I think that Avalanche Reviews is talking about Countdown Vampires, a PlayStation game, but I don't know much else about it. Maybe he should do a review? ;)
Hah, thanks man. I guess that worked out because I recorded the voice-over as I was coming down from a sore throat! I decided to keep it though since it did kinda sound like I was telling a spooky ghost story. :)
Since it was never officially released in the US, you'll have to either play it on an emulator, or get a reproduction. The game I played for the review came from ocdreproductions.com, and I can vouch for the quality of his work.
Good job on the review! But did you guys know that "sweet home" remake is not the only reason for resident evil. There was also supposed to be a movie. And the early concept of "biohazard" was supposed to be the video game adaptation of that movie. Speculation says it could have been with George Romero since he directed the commercials and even wrote the original script for the first resident evil movie. So in a way, Resident Evil or "Biohazard" started as a movie, but was probably canceled in favour of a video game.
Great review. I'm definitely going to pick a copy up at some point. I now hear you can get the original famicom cart and with a retron 5 patch it and play it on there as well. I included it in my tribute to horror games episode 2 video when i did the 8-bit game consoles.
Super Derek Yeah I heard it was a recent patch. The reason I want one is for a way I can transfer GB/GBC/GBA saves to the system from a real cart and then back to the cart. Great way to replace batteries and such.
Nice vid guys.. Im not a fan of JRPGs really but I love sweet home! even the graphics and music, every thing about it really.. i think there was a bit of a learning curve with using items and moving stuff in the menus but after that hump its on.. Anyway nice collab too. that Jared guys alright :) i wouldn't have minded him going off a survival horror tangent lol. when i have some extra dough i'll keep in mind to check out ocdreproductions.. There's a few more repro carts i have in mind I wouldn't mind picking up sometime.
Huh. This video was a review of Sweet Home, the famicom survival horror rpg that came out before Alone in the Dark, and was what inspired Resident Evil.
SuperDerek RPG Reviews I don't consider Sweet Home a survival horror. But anyway, from the video what i understood was "Resident Evil CREATED the genre".
Not true at all. If Sweet Home never existed, Survival Horror would still exist. There was 1983's Forbidden Forest and 1985's Beyond the Forbidden Forest on the Commodore 64 Splatterhouse is a survival horror platformer released in 1988 Project Firestart released in 1989 for the Commodore 64 is allot like Resident Evil 1992's Alone in the Dark by Infogrames I can easily keep going. 1995's Clock Tower for the Super Famicom 1995's D for the 3DO and ported to the PS1,DOS and Saturn People give Sweet Home too much credit for "creating" the genre of survival horror when it didn't. It was a influence and Biohazard (Resident Evil) was another huge influence on the genre and that is what they deserve credit for. Just like Metal Gear influenced stealth game mechanics but games like Castle Wolfenstein by Muse Software predates MG by about 6 1/2 years.
Just a slight nitpick: Asuka wasn't a maid. She was the host of the documentary/art restorer(and a total diva). Akiko was a producer, but maybe the motherly vibe she gave out made her better suited as a nurse in the game.
I found a Super Derek video I haven't watched yet! And it has Avalanche Jared! I don't how I missed this for five years, but I'm glad I found it
07:00 Most of the credit should go to the Alone in the Dark games!
Great video, Derek--this is the second Sweet Home video I've watched today! I'm definitely going to pick this up on the Famicom...your work here was the final nudge I needed. ;)

you know jimmy... ah i got nothing. get sweet home its awesome plus you dont need the translation so that be sweet to have the real deal.
Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) don't be jelly, ha!

Ha! After this whole affair, I really want to check the movie out too!
Sweet Home is actually the only reproduction I own. It's definitely an i interesting game and I had no idea it had so many close ties to Resident Evil. Great Halloween episode guys.
Hey, is this related to the Netflix Horror Series "Sweet Home"? the Korean one? similar themes...
Lever since I sat the HVGN review of this game I've wanted to try it. It looks super unique for an NES title.
Dude! You outdone yourself. I nearly said that at the 15 sec mark but I thought I'd watch the whole thing first... That sound engineering was stellar and I haven't actually heard of this game... I went to check it out on eBay then remembered I sold my NES anyway :) Still, great video

Pst...Definitly don't use emulators. They are against the law. ;P

Two of my favorite RUclips gaming shows team up!
Wow finally Sweet home review

Great Review Derrick!;
Found your channel 2 weeks ago and watched all your videos... Happy I subscribed! Keep the new content coming!
Space Lion, You've watched all of my videos and are still subscribed?! That's impressive! And thanks, I appreciate it. :)
Great video. Have a happy Halloween!
Huh, I had heard murmurings of this Sweet Home game, but knew virtually nothing about it or its connection to survival horror. Very interesting stuff. Also that 40 seconds of blackness at the end left me seriously unnerved.
Uh.. Oh yeah! That's totally what I was going for, and wasn't at all a weird rendering glitch. ;)
Super Derek Hahaha! I wasn't sure if it was or not, so I kept watching expecting a jump that never came. XD
But I guess that is the true essence of horror. Its not about what's there, rather what your mind concocts in the absence of something. You can file this one under "happy accidents". =D
Which is the game that Jared mentions after Silent Hill, the vampire one?
I think that Avalanche Reviews is talking about Countdown Vampires, a PlayStation game, but I don't know much else about it. Maybe he should do a review? ;)
Thought the logo said Sheet Hone lol.
Great video! The way you project your voice really complimented the eerie mature of the game and video
Hah, thanks man. I guess that worked out because I recorded the voice-over as I was coming down from a sore throat! I decided to keep it though since it did kinda sound like I was telling a spooky ghost story. :)
Awesome choice and review man! Where can I find an American copy of this damn game?!
Since it was never officially released in the US, you'll have to either play it on an emulator, or get a reproduction. The game I played for the review came from ocdreproductions.com, and I can vouch for the quality of his work.
What is that song that played in the background of some parts of the video?
Retro Kid! It's a heavily edited version of one of the songs from Secret of Mana. :)
Good job on the review!

Sweet Home the game is based on the Japanese horror movie of the name
great video
Hi there! *Derek, you are wrong. Destiny of an Emperor, was an RPG first than Sweet Home.*
I love your videos
Thanks man, I appreciate it! :)
Great review. I'm definitely going to pick a copy up at some point. I now hear you can get the original famicom cart and with a retron 5 patch it and play it on there as well. I included it in my tribute to horror games episode 2 video when i did the 8-bit game consoles.
Holy crap! I had no idea the Retron 5 could do that! :O
Super Derek
Yeah I heard it was a recent patch. The reason I want one is for a way I can transfer GB/GBC/GBA saves to the system from a real cart and then back to the cart. Great way to replace batteries and such.

Super Derek
...................and you will......
Why I like rpg
TIME FOR SPOOKS. This game is another fascinating one for me. Too bad it never saw an official US release
I find it extremely anoying that all the "survival horror experts" pretend Alone in the Dark don't exists.
TheBrazilRules Sounds like you've got some work to do! Avalanche Reviews! :)
I love Alone in the Dark, but I only really get into the new nightmare
Avalanche Reviews
Anyway you said that Resident Evil created the genre.
Huh. This video was a review of Sweet Home, the famicom survival horror rpg that came out before Alone in the Dark, and was what inspired Resident Evil.
SuperDerek RPG Reviews
I don't consider Sweet Home a survival horror. But anyway, from the video what i understood was "Resident Evil CREATED the genre".
Nice
i have the english transted rom
So in a nutshell Parasite Eve was never that unique.
Not true at all.
If Sweet Home never existed, Survival Horror would still exist.

Splatterhouse is a survival horror platformer released in 1988

1992's Alone in the Dark by Infogrames
I can easily keep going.
1995's Clock Tower for the Super Famicom
1995's D for the 3DO and ported to the PS1,DOS and Saturn

Splatter house isn't survival horror.
Resident Evil is Sweet Home and Alone in the Dark just kind of...smooshed together. None of these three invented the genre.
Why do people who love Survival Horror constantly forget about Alone in the Dark? It came out before Resident Evil.
This game is so rad!
