How to Make a Simple Juice Groove on a Cutting Board

  • This is a simple technique I use for adding a juice or blood groove - whatever you want to call it - to a cutting board. It works regardless of the grain orientation of your board. You just need a router (I prefer a palm router for this), a round nose bit, and an edge guide for your router. This same task can be completed with a CNC or a router jig, but I find my way works well enough. Also, I don't own a CNC machine. :)

    Your the first that does not use a jig or a set up that they invented , you keep it simple and to the point and I thank you because I learned a few pointers from you and keep up the good work. People don't understand that when you are a beginner in the wood working field most of the time you do with what you have and that's the bottom line.

      Thanks. I think it's easier to get good results on a juice groove with a jig or CNC, but I have a very small shop and don't have the space to store a bunch of jigs so I look for other ways that don't take up any extra room. ;)

      YES!!!!!! THANK YOU! My shop is a 1925 garage that wont even fit a modern car. Thats my shop. I dont have room for a bunch of jigs made for specific projects. I Do however had the router her is using with that guard! I will be trying this tomorrow!

    People buy tools and don't read basic instructions. They throw away attachments, manuals, etc. Some answers are elemental. These days too many lay it on somebody else to show them. Others just want to expand knowledge. Your video did both. Good.

    Awesome! I just installed butcher block countertops, and had enough waste to make several cutting boards. I appreciate this video. Now I know how to do the juice channel! Thanks!

    For sanding the grooves, you could probably use drill bits or sockets to get the perfect fit.

    The Amazon link in the description seems to be a 3/8 radius I.e. 3/4 diameter. You meant 3/8 diameter right?
    Great video btw; thanks!

      Honestly, I don't remember but I think you're right. I do use both a 3/8" and 3/4", depending on the size of the board.

    I tried this I did it with a Cheap Harbor Freight Router because it had and edge guide and my DeWalt Palm Router didn’t. It was a disaster it didn’t have the RPM to cut the Oak Wood I was using. I order and 2 1/4 HP DW 618 DeWalt Router with an edge guide hopefully that will do the trick. The old saying is if you have the right tool you can do anything and that Harbor Freight Router wasn’t the right tool it almost took my finger off.

    Great technique! I was cutting my groove a little at a time and adjust the depth each pass. I was concerned about cutting the full bit depth and getting chatter

    Hi. My brother just made his first juice groove in my walnut cutting board. But it made a slight wonky bit. Do you know how we can make the grooves perfectly straight? Thank you (We had the fence on his router )

    • @BitsandWood
      @BitsandWood  Год назад +2

      Just going slow, steady, and with pressure against the fence it what works best for me. I have seen some folks clamp a board to act as a larger fence and run the router against that. Seems to work well.

    How did you get your burned branding on your board?

    • @BitsandWood

    What speed is your router turning? How do you keep from getting burn marks?

    • @BitsandWood
      @BitsandWood  3 года назад

      I always get a little bit of burn marks. To minimize it, the finally pass is just a hair deeper than the pass before and then I use a bit of the size of the router bit wrapped in sand paper to remove what burns are left. I think I normally set the router around 18k rpm.

    I missed how deep you went sorry!?

    • @BitsandWood
      @BitsandWood  3 года назад

      For the final depth, I just go with whatever the radius of the bit is. It's been a while, but I think this was a 3/8" radius bit so the final depth was 3/8" deep.
