Most multiplayer games have a certain layer of devoted players who will play no matter what. TF2 is Valve's game, so this layer is pretty substantial. I really don't think there's something special about TF2 fans.
If Valve really put an effort into updating the game regularly, the number would've been astronomical.

@@josep754 Not really, it's either new players being able to chat or bots spamming the chat. New players don't really talk too much so it's a good way to stop bots. Unless valve invents a new way to detect bots, we're just gonna have to deal with it.

TF has had consistent content and updates since 2007 while HL has had Zero content updates until THIS YEAR.

@@naturesquad9174 Weeeell HL isn't a multiplayer or even co-op game, Valve has never had a reason to give consistent or even any content updates at all once the game is out and running well. + HL has been having titles in the work since EP2 but they kept getting canceled, therefore they would rather focus on making a new HL game than giving small DLCs every once in a while. TF2, however, it wouldn't really be possible to make a TF3 considering TF2 already has everything they want TF2 to be, especially considering there is no story mode or co-op its just 100% multiplayer, so there would be literally nothing to "continue" on (That we know of at least). Which is why they used to make content updates.

Essentially, Valve released an update that hurt the game, it caused a player drop until they fixed it, so now they don't feel right adding new updates/content to their game because they are afraid that an update will break the game again, thus killing the game in a different way?
How does Valve think? Balance issues are in any online game, this is the industry.
In my opinion, I think it's Valve's perfectionism that is going to kill them long term.
They can make anything, literally, they could put their mind to any genre and completely set the bar, like mid to late 90s RARE, but if it isn't perfect, they get gun shy.
No one is perfect Valve, it's through mistakes that you attain perfection.
If TF2 dies, it'll be on Valve's side.
The community will keep this game alive forever.

Perfectionism kills anyone creatively. I have this and I can't draw without feeling like crap that I can't draw as good as X person or X sibling.
They think we have extremely high expectations for updates even though we don't especially now what we want is a map some cosmetics and occasional rebalancing/maybe a new weapon

It's honestly heartbreaking to see the game thruge on without any content support from the creators but I don't think Valve would ever let it completely die. Team Fortress and CSGO, Half Life and Portal as well as DOTA are their legacies, and it would be a real shame if one of their crowning achievements were to get left in the dust.

The heavy update could very well include mvm to update a whole function that’s been left untouched for several years. New Australiums would make sense to add, and they could update it for all the weapons that don’t have them

the answer is evident: they took all the professionals to work on Alyx, and they left the interns to take care of TF2.
an experienced developer wouldn't take FIVE MONTHS to fix a calculation error in a particle system.
Also they destroyed pyro, now you have tryhards watching uncle dan and palladin videos rekking everyone with their 4000 hours of experience. Before you could counter them with w+m1 but now it's useless

a spy who knows how to cornerstab or stairstab because of a WM1 pyro's predictable movement
Pyro as a class is rooted in ease of use, but (relatively) low DPS within his effective range. Whereas other classes do higher burst damage or outright outdamage him, pyro is stuck with average mobility and a subpar primary.
Also, how is it the classes fault for you not being able to play pyro like a dick/effectively? Pyro is best used as a deterrence to spies or as a flank class.
At least alyx ended up being really good for anyone that had a headset
@@Chad.Commenter w+m1 was NEVER a reliable answer against skill, and I'm glad it's even less so now. Don't be mad that you have to aim with pyro if anything just don't play FPS if you hate aiming in the first place....
IF you actually aim you can still easily kill most classes PYRO is still an extremely powerfull class that counters almost everyone in the game except turtle engineer and heavies.
Pyro has the most tools out of all the classes, it has the most combo's you can pull of, it also has an answer to explosives, it SHITS on even the most skilled demoknights, it outdamages everyone in close range except heavy, it is the bane of every spies existence and it can even close the gap to snipers with the new jetpack.
PYRO has a reliable answer to every situation it just takes practice to learn all of them, I'm glad how complex that class is now forced to be with w+m1 being only occasionally a good answer.

I really enjoyed the addition of Rabscootle's Item Schema Changes and other community members have made a collection on the Steam Workshop of awesome fixes that improve the game a lot. It seems like a no-brainer for Valve to implement these things as they are so sorely needed and desired.
Y'know, rewatching this... I'm surprised it never occurred to me how much of a bad idea it'd be to make a whole update around a single class. That causes inflation because everyone wants to scramble to try out the new content!
It's things like this that make me grateful for TF2's strong community. If VALVe won't give us more, we'll make it happen.

Even though I have seen this game in passing for years, I have an idea for a new game mode that could bring the community back: A 16 player Mann VS. Machine Raid mode.
Here's the premise- One team will be handling a majority of the robot hoard, while the other team handles another objective to complete. Say for example, you are raiding one of the giant transport tanks. Red Team will play defense at a control point to distract the robots, while Blu pushes a cart to destroy said transport vehicle from the inside or attempt to hijack it and hack the system to control the robots. In other words, it would be a mix of two different game modes working together to complete a bigger goal. Not sure if that's possible, but it would be cool to see MVM get a revival.
Maybe a BLU team mode where you push a cart towards a robot facility, and as you push the cart Engineer bots spawn in with Sentry guns. Then when you get to a checkpoint, you ready up and hold off a wave of enemies that comes at you from all sides. Once the wave's complete, you move on to the next objective until you reach the final stage, where you have to fight off a boss robot like Major Crits or something and then detonate the bomb.
To make it more interesting, you can either give players more money at the start so they upgrade their weapons fully before going through the checkpoints, or you place an upgrade station at every other checkpoint, so you have to choose wisely where you go.

@@kevincass9917 I could see that working. I also came up with concepts for 4 special operations, representing different different difficulties.
1. Operation Bolt Bashers (Easy): Two different Deathmatches going on at the same time, culminating into a co-op King of the Hill.
2. Operation Disassembly Line (Normal): The start would appear familiar to those who are seasoned in MVM; a basic defense MVM map. But there's a catch: After a set amount of time, the Blu team comes charging in with their own tank they hijacked, now switching into an attack mode for all.
3. Operation Meltdown Menace (Hard): Blu Team takes the charge on a robot factory in a control point mode, while Red goes around back with a bomb to plant in the heart of the facility to blow it sky high.
4. Operation Gray Matter (Expert): This takes the fight right to Gray Mann's doorstep, leading into the strongest robots assembled and sending the Classic Team Fortress team to stop you from reaching him. Eventually, it leads up into a two tiered raid against a gargantuan robot piloted by Gray himself.
This is just a basic outline and you are welcome to change or discuss this as you will.

I really hope that, if Valve were really to give up, they'd hand development to the dedicated fans.
Sure they can still be the ones to approve/greenlight content that WILL get released, but let the clearly able and willing people that want to create content be the ones to make content Valve themselves might not want to be making.
I agree, the TF2 community already creates lots of cool maps, weapons, and cosmetics.
Idk, a lot of well known people that are involved with balancing have rather, let’s say, odd balance ideas/philosophy.
The rest don’t even really know basic game design logic, there’s a reason why the average players are considered average players.
Basically I’d doubt that it would be a good idea.

On paper that sounds like a good idea, but I don't think it would pan out too well, it would be hard to make it work, like I don't think the guy with 10k hours on sniper should work at valve, but I do think they need to hire people that already have programming and game development talent as well as passion for tf2 and its community.

Honestly I'm a F2P and it's really not that big of a deal, most F2P players are pretty unfamiliar with the game and as such they don't know how to use VC. I however do know a lot about the game yet I'm perfectly fine with it. It honestly doesn't really effect us that much. I appreciate premium players being willing to break their backs to support us, but please, just let it go, we're fine with it.
