Responding to Justin Peters

  • So one of our shorts from our review of the Cessationist film caught the attention of cessationist Justin Peters. He’s provided a video response, so we’ll examine the arguments he and his guest Chris Rosebrough present regarding continuationism and cessationism and whether the gifts of the Spirit are operational today.
    Jeremiah 32:6-8 ESV
    6 Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me: 7 Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you and say, ‘Buy my field that is at Anathoth, for the right of redemption by purchase is yours.’ 8 Then Hanamel my cousin came to me in the court of the guard, in accordance with the word of the Lord, and said to me, ‘Buy my field that is at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for the right of possession and redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.

They must hype on the differences they see in other which is not even fundamental to the Christian faith and crucified them as false Teacher condemned to hell
      Good you refuse to call Chris or JP false Teachers simply because they do not share your view on God's revelation and how it often comes in 'unclear or uncertain' ways. Continue to be redemptive in your approach at Remnant Radio. God continues to pour his blessings on your work

      @@TBird5790 I've watched many RR videos and found them to mock anyone they don't agree with - while calling out those for mocking them so it becomes one massive vicious circle, so as Jeff says, take another listen.
      I wanted to find RR being theologically sound however alarmingly, they seem to be fine with even the most obvious heretics (Benny Hinn has a healing gift apparently?!).
      Justin has said many times that he believes there are many saved Charismatics, indeed I myself was one.
      To answer your statement that Justin "and has never accepted an invitation to debate or even talk to any charismatic believer personally", well, you are simply wrong. A recent example in 2023 is that Justin Peters and Jim Osman sat down with Dr Sam Storms and Dr Michael Brown in a filmed round table discussion for American Gospel 3. Unfortunately, Dr Brown decided he didn't like what was said and pulled his involvement from the series. I have heard that he has since allowed some of the material to be used.
      So you might want to rethink your statement - just because you haven't seen or heard about an instance of dialogue, doesn't mean it doesn't actually happen.

    Chris and Justin read their own presuppositions into the text while accusing the Remnant guys of doing that very thing. I had a radical conversion almost 5 years ago. I heard from God in ways that are almost unexplainable, I don't have the words to describe these encounters. I know God still speaks, and miracles still happen. And of course, I filter everything through scripture because the enemy speaks as well. There are no scriptures to back up their cessationist arguments. They've never experienced God supernaturally, so they assume it doesn't happen.
    Edit: After some push back, I must ammend my initial comment. I'm leaving it as is for context.. While not my intention i made a broad statement that didn't represent their stance very well at all. I should have said something along the lines of, "they've never experienced what some call the apostolic gifts, so they assume it's not currently happening".
    I do however stand by the rest of my comment. I don't see anything in scripture that supports their argument. Thanks to those who provided some insight.

    • @justinhawes1593
      @justinhawes1593 8 месяцев назад +3

      I’m not a cessationist per se, but I don’t think you need scripture to make a strong argument for it, depending on what the claim is. Most cessationists simply believe that the “Apostle level” (for lack of a better term) miracles are not in great supply in the modern day. I would argue this is simply observable, which is a valid form of evidence.

    • @justinhawes1593
      @justinhawes1593 8 месяцев назад +1

      Also, the comment about them “never experiencing God supernaturally” comes across as condescending, childish, and is frankly not relevant to the truthfulness of the arguments.

    • @FollowingJesus129
      @FollowingJesus129 8 месяцев назад

      @justinhawes1593 How do you not need scripture to back up a doctrinal teaching? I went 41 years without ever seeing anything I would describe as supernatural, and indeed, I was a cessationist. That's not condescending. There's a scripture that explains the cessationist belief better than any I've ever heard from that camp. It's 1 Samuel 3:1. "The word of the Lord was rare in those days. There was no frequent or widespread vision." This to me makes more sense than the total absence of anything miraculous.

    • @justinhawes1593
      @justinhawes1593 8 месяцев назад

      @@FollowingJesus129 I said it comes across as condescending because it does, I’m not saying that was your intent. I just think it could’ve been framed better, and as far as the debate goes it really doesn’t matter anyways.
      Teaching doctrine from the pulpit and having a private position are not the same. If someone is teaching from the pulpit I agree you need scriptural arguments, but one can come to a cessationist conclusion without scriptural input, that’s what I was saying.
      For example, you can prove or disprove certain prophecies in scripture were fulfilled outside of scripture, such as the sacking of Tyre. You need scripture for the prophecy to begin with, but you don’t need scripture to conclude that the prophecy came true.
      Most cessationists are making extremely modest claims that are blown out of proportion so that it’s easier to argue against, which I find somewhat funny. One miracle does not disprove cessationism, depending on the claim.
      I don’t know anything about Justin Peters except people like to clown on him, which I find distasteful. Too many comments regarding his physical ailments, blaming them on his lack of faith. You wouldn’t hear a cessationist make such a gross claim.

    • @FollowingJesus129
      @FollowingJesus129 8 месяцев назад +1

      @justinhawes1593 Never my intention to clown. I actually consider Justin to be a brother, and I really believe his intentions are good. Unfortunately, there is a ton of foolery in the charismatic circles today. The supernatural I experienced didn't look anything like that. It was honestly scary and awe-inspiring. Thanks for clarifying

    I wasn’t thrilled with the way Rosebrough presented his case, but all the Hebrew language and talking down to you aside, I think his view still makes the best sense when you look at the rest of the book of Jeremiah. Jeremiah repeatedly receives the word of the Lord and proclaims it with what sounds like absolute confidence. No where else does he say,”then I knew.” It seems much more reasonable to think he meant that now he’s seeing what God was talking about, not that now he’s seeing that God was talking.

      So glad you have the same view as the critic. I gotta ask: why does it matter? Don't both interpretations show that Jeremiah was not clear on the message? That things became more clear AFTER the events occurred? If so, that's what the Remnants are saying. That it's not always clear when the Lord is speaking and ALSO that what you hear from the Lord is not always clear, it's often shrouded in mystery.

The send movement and all the false teachers that are involved in those movement are servants of satin posing as ministers of righteousness. All this comes from the Pentecostal, charismatic movement, joining hands withe the Roman Catholic church just riff with every wind of false teaching , (women pastors says no such verse, sucking up anti Pauline teaching). People with itching ears heaping up false teachers. Look at Sid Roth's program every lunacy in Christendom is portrayed as hearing from God. Oh these folks are hearing from some spiritual entity but it is not The Lord Jesus. Look at the Day Star and TBN empires who are on those stations. Bad Bad teachers and teaching. So when you look at all this gong show religious lunacy ya you might come off a bit snarky and pride full of having truth and not the Willy Wonky Chocolate factory false teacher of today. God is cleaning house and exposing - this scripture comes to mind- 2 Tim 3:5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. 6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. 9 But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

    Saved in 1981 and served the Lord faithfully for 28 years until I left the church because of personal reasons I cannot divulge here. Worked in a church building up the pastor and his wife to only be cast aside after the church began to grow.
    I have witnessed so many false prophets that were allowed to continue to lie to young Christians some hurting and enduring difficult times in their life. I came back to the Lord 6 years ago and God has brought me through some really hard times.
    6 years ago I was given 4 months to live, and a miracle of a liver transplant saved my life. Received a liver after being on the list only 7 days. I believe more than ever we have to watch and mark those who cause division in the faith, false prophets that are misleading people.
    Dr Brown, you’re one of the few that I watch and would rather spend most of my time in the teaching of the word and not the sensationalism of ministers.

    I really enjoyed this episode and perhaps you can go into greater depth in future episodes. As you said, Moses longed for the day when all of Gods children could experience His presence. Under the Law, the Priests had to be of the linage of Levi and High Priests had to be of the sons of Zadok. (Ezekiel 44:15). The Levitical Priests ministered to the people, but only those of the linage of Zadok could minister to the Lord in the Holy and Most Holy place. We are ONE spirit with the Lord and He delights in revealing the deep things of God to His children. 1Corinthians 2:10-16. When you continue reading into chapter 3:1-3, you begin to understand why many are still drinking the milk of the Word and not the meat.
    My father was a Church of Christ preacher and for the first 32 years of my life I was taught that the people that spoke in tongues and were filled with the Holy Spirit, were of the devil. We were the only true church, because we took the Lords Supper on the first day of each week, only received offerings on Sundays, didn’t use a piano as we worshiped, but most importantly, we had the correct name on our Church, (The Church of Christ). We had absolutely no revelation from the Holy Spirit and believed God no longer talked to His children and the Bible was a closed history book to us. We were the walking dead and didn’t even know it.
    I had been baptized several times by the time I was 30 which would appease my conscience for a short time, but I had never prayed the sinner’s prayer, asking Jesus to come into my heart. Whenever a pastor of another denomination came on the television, I would immediately change the channel, until one day God gave me ears to hear and I asked Jesus to come into my heart. God heard my prayer and His Spirit bore witness with my spirit that I was His child. Shortly thereafter, He baptized me into His Spirit and His Word came alive for the very first time. The form of religion I was taught from my youth up, quickly crumbled under my feet, as I experienced spiritual warfare for the first time. I had no idea that I had just enlisted in one to one combat with hell itself. He gave me one scripture on which to stand and it has stood the test of time, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
    I feel so sorry for those in the body of Christ that don’t understand what they are missing as they resist the Holy Spirit. There’s a place in God that He wants each of His children to experience, but, some are afraid that if they ask Him for His Spirit that He will give them a serpent! Matthew 7:7-11 This is the root of the problem. You do NOT trust God. Read Luke 11:9-13, aloud and may the words of Jesus convict each heart that has chosen not to ask the Father for His in dwelling presence. How much longer will you allow your fear and unbelief to keep you at “a safe distance” from the very presence of our Holy God. Israel made this mistake at Mt. Sinai and many are making the same mistake today choosing to know and view God from a distance. Hebrews warns us about allowing an evil heart of unbelief that keeps us at a distance, separated by the fear of being in His presence. Hebrews 3:12-15
    In a great house there are vessels of honor and some for dishonor. 2 Timothy 2:19-21 The decision to be a vessel of honor is ours to make. We can have as much of His Presence and live as close to Him, as we choose. Out of the twelve, there were only three in the inner circle and only one that knew the sound of the very heartbeat of the Son of God. John knew the way to the Masters heart. Love unlocks the doors to the deepest and most intimate truths hidden in God from the very foundation of the world, as told in the book of Revelation.
    We can have the correct theology, win every debate, lead lost souls to Christ, understand all mysteries and even give our bodies to be burned, but it’s all worthless if the process God is using to refine us doesn’t turn us into vessels of love created to host His Divine Presence. 1 Cor. 13. Who really wants to be the one to receive the, “I’m always right” award in heaven?

How would you interpret that in the days of old God spoke to us through the prophets and in various ways but in these last days he has spoken to us through his son?. Number two. Do you believe prophecy is foretelling the future for today outside of scripture . Because if you do Christ could not return within that time frame. Because God does not lie and that prophecy would have to come to pass. This is what has happened with Bob Jones the false prophet of Kansas City. He made all these futuristic prophecies 10 years from now 20 years from now that this is going to happen. Really. ?So if it was a true word from the Lord Christ would not return within that time frame and we would know that. And that's why they're false

      @@anthonylomonte3437 I agree that Bob Jones and Paul Cain were false prophets.

      Acts 21:9 says: "He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied."
      There were male and female prophets/prophetesses in the book of Acts who gave prophecy after Jesus ascended into heaven. These mentioned prophets/prophetesses were not Apostles.
      I don't see a Scriptural foundation for the gift of prophecy ending. Irenaeus in around the year 180 says that the gifts of the Spirit were all still in operation, including the gift of prophecy, in his book "Against Heresies". That was 150 years after the birth of the church.
      I love Justin Peters. I watch him all the time. I think he's such a needed voice in the Body of Christ. There are so many false prophets, including Bob Jones and those who were taught by Bob Jones, like you mentioned.

      I have utmost respect for Dr. Brown. I have an immediate family member that works directly under him at his ministry and he's been nothing but gracious to our family during an extremely sad/difficult time a few years back. I think Dr. Brown has a great mind and lots of great teachings ... However... I am in total agreement with Justin and Chris when they call out these heretics/lunatics in the church. Dr. Brown has to do mental gymnastics and give approval/turn a blind eye to the worst heretics in the church. He rarely rebukes anyone's extrabiblical teachings/experiences... even the worst of them. It's "not his place" or something like that. The modern church is a goat rodeo. Anyone can say/do annyttthingg in the name of our Lord and it just gets a pass. It's extremely sad to watch. So, while Roseborough and Peters may sound harsh at times, I believe it's warranted. We need to hold these frauds to the scripture and test what they say. I'm saying this stuck between a rock and a hard place - Loving my family members who are deeply involved into the charismatic movement, while just scratching my head and some of the people they follow lol. @@e.m.8094

      @brockestringer It is easy to see why you don't find fault with Chris or Justin, it's because you have accepted the false narrative that anyone who disagrees with you (or them) is a heretic. You are using that word far too loosely and falling into the same trap both of those men do. I would encourage you to take a more humble approach like the Remnant Radio guys have. It's fine if you disagree with those who are charismatic. It is not fine to put them down and claim they are heretics, especially when they proclaim all the foundational tenets of Jesus.
      No doubt there are charlatans in the charismatic movement. But there are also charlatans who are reformed. I would argue being a great Bible teacher like these two men doesn't mean anything if they can't show love.
      The Bible doesn't say those who are great Bible teachers are the pinnacle of what a believer should be. Love is the greatest commandment, remember that. Neither Justin nor Chris appear to be teaching in love. Don't forget, the Pharisees were knowledgeable teachers too. That is important but not the MOST important thing.

    25min into this and, as usual, I'm liking pretty much all that's being said and the way in which it's being presented. I do have some problems with some of what's said though. For example, Josh cites and references Gen. 40-41 as instances where God speaks but it's not understand by the hearer. Here's the problem with that it regards to prophets. The prisoners and Pharoah were NOT prophets. So that's a Strawman and VERY stinky red-herring.
    Wrt to Dan. 8:27, I'm gonna have to give that over to a deeper study. Both translations and commentaries differ. Josh claims that Daniel did not understand the prophecy. But how can one be sickened/appalled by that which they don't understand? Several translations and commentaries say "none" understood it. One commentary says Daniel did, was appalled by it, and those he tried to get others to understand they couldn't.
    John 12 I believe is a case where God gave hearing and understanding to those He wanted to hear and understand, Namely the Disciples. Similar to what Jesus did with parables.
    I find it troubling that you would cite/reference Acts 10:17 without doing the same with Acts 10:28. Josh leaves the listener believing that Peter never understood the message. While Peter being "perplexed" might be understood that he didn't understand the vision I think this is an excellent case where looking at several translations, the meaning of "perplexed", and consulting several commentaries will lead one to a good understanding. And I believe based on Acts 10:28 that v.17 means Peter was simply thinking to himself "Could this really be?" So it was not a case of Peter not understanding but more a case of Peter not wanting to accept what was showed him.
    Wrt Acts 21:4, I've already addressed that in a previous video and I believe Josh is "extrapolating" the text. IOW, coming to a conclusion based on a presupposition and bias that the text simply doesn't support. And that's bothersome because that's exactly what the Cessationists do. I hate it when one side criticized the other for doing something and then turn right around and do the same thing.
    Roundtree makes an excellent point about 2nd Pet. 3:15 and Scripture as a whole. Isn't Scripture itself called Prophecy? If Scripture were as clear as the Calvinists say, oops! I mean Cessationists. Then we wouldn't have a the varying doctrines and denominations that we do, right?
    LOVE LOVE LOVE what Miller and Josh said about how to speak prophetically. GREAT stuff there. I'm learning a lot about prophecy that I hadn't given much thought to in the past. I would only add and somewhat echo, albeit a bit louder and stronger, that when a "prophetic utterance" is made it should be made CRYSTAL CLEAR as to whether it is "it seems like" or "I sense the Lord is telling me" verses "Thus saith the Lord". So I agree with Roundtree and Grudem as well except, as I said before, when it comes to the "prophet" who says "thus saith the Lord" and is proved false. Then the "prophet" should be confronted, told to confess and repent before the entire audience that was given the false prophecy, and excommunicated if they try to wiggle out of it or refuse to confess/repent,

    It's ironic to hear Justin Peters talk of what "we cessationists have long said." He doesn't seem to be aware of what cessationists have long believed. Either he is ignorant of the history of cessationism or intentionally glossing over it. Just study the Reformed Puritans! Though they were the theological successors of Calvin, and were with Calvin on the cessation of the so-called "extraordinary" gifts, they believed that gifts ANALOGOUS to those 1st Century gifts still continued. In other words, they argued that while God doesn't impart "extraordinary" gifts today, He DOES still impart gifts that look very much like those 1st Century gifts. They're just not on the same level. Hence, a prophetic function continues...it's just not "immediate revelation" (meaning inspired, infallible, canonical, direct revelation). They argued for the continuation of "mediate revelation" (supernatural revelation mediated through the Word of God). They believed in prophecy, visions, dreams and angelic communication. They believed in "prophets" for today...although they would not see them as equal to the NT prophets. We're talking the Westminster divines, John Owen, the Scottish Covenanters, et. al. All you have to do is look this stuff up! Traditional cessationism was very much open to the supernatural.

    Hey, can one of you Remnant Radio guys, or someone very knowledgeable about this view of Jer 32, help me to understand precisely what you are saying in regard how this relates to the biblical and modern practice of "prophecy?' So, first do I understand the position correctly to be that Jeremiah had received some message that he thought might have been from the LORD, but only after the events unraveled Jeremiah had confirmation and was able to declare it to be an actual word from God (and only describes it as the word of God in v. 1, 6 as an after-event characterization)? If correct, can you elaborate: 1) Are you saying this, as I'd guess from today's practice, is the norm as to how prophecy works - It can only be declared an actual word from God after confirmation of the message? 2) Or are you suggesting, based on this interpretation, that this is a rather unique instance of this particular proposed process, "clear" from the clause "Then he knew..."? And as a corollary, that even if this might seem to be the only such instance in Scripture where this can be described as that precise process, that alone provides justification for the modern practice? 3) Is this also how we are supposed to understand the 14 or so other occurrences in Jer. where he says the word of the LORD "came to me/Jeremiah" - that in every case he would have been initially unsure/unclear, but only after the prophesied events unfolded and in retrospect as the author -- he could declare them at that point authoritatively as God's word? 4) Are we to understand this same sequence - don't know, then events, then declare in retrospect as God's Word - is what happened in all such instances where a prophecy in the Bible is declared God's Word? And 5) According to this interpretation and modern practice, are we to assume a variant of the process unfolded with Jer and all OT prophets; namely, that some things were tentatively put forth by OT/NT prophets as God's word, but later -- as they didn't come to pass --they were then not recorded in the Bible because they were unconfirmed/proven wrong? Inquiring minds want to know. TY

    I've never been swayed or brainwashed by Remnant Radio, I'm a "mut" in the theological world. I believe in the gifts by I don't believe everyone who claims to have them is actually operating in a Holy Spirit given gift. I don't operate to my knowledge in any of the sign gifts, but I trust God's Word which clearly states these gifts will be actively used in the last days by God's people. So im what you would call a quiet charismatic or proper continueationalist.
    With that said I absolutely love Justin Peter's, and I respect him and his teachings called "Clouds without water" and many other teachings of his. I learned a lot from him which helped me realize (along with Remnant Radio) that I need to study God's Word in context. I need to form my opinion of the text according to my educated understanding of it in all its truth. Only then can we believe in everything God has said He would and will do and can do at any time. Im open to God's power, and the Holy Spirit can do with me what He wants and I am keeping my eyes locked on Jesus so even when I goof up on my educated guesses, I know I won't have far to fall. Jesus always picks me right back up again and we continue forward.
    I can't wait till we can all sit together in eternity and realize that we were all right In our own minds and walks, we just weren't right for everyone else's walks, just as they aren't right for our walks. Se are all individual. We all have purpose and instead of breaking up we should value eachothers dedication to the One and Only King Jesus. Everyone is wrong at many points all throughout their lives and walks. We should just accept that we will only know what we really wanted to know, once we are told in eternity. Those secrets and mistories God has planned for all of us. None of us know that. We can all agree on that, because no eye has seen nor ear has heard of the things God has planned for us in eternity. 💜
