🌟 About this video:
Did you ever wonder why a particular fragrance is named as it is? Honestly I think about this with pretty much ever perfume I come across! I love words and meanings and I always wonder if the name is linked to the inspiration, simply reflecting how the fragrance smells or is just a clever marketing ploy to get people interested.
Sometimes names are just that, there to make it easy to recognise and to refer to, at other times, names are a critical part of the fragrance's identity and soul and you can't imagine it being called anything else.
Here I discuss the back stories to 3 or 4 fragrance names, including a random interlude on the fabulous "cat" in Breakfast At Tiffany's, cos why not?
Did you already know about any of these? Do you have a fragrance with an interesting name? Would you rename any fragrances in your collection? Do you think some perfume names are simply inappropriate? Do you like a controversial name?

Hello Dr. Claire. A woman after my inquisitive heart. I love these stories and prefer going down these type of rabbit holes, if you will, to discover the secrets behind things. I’m not surprised by anything Tom Ford does. I’m inclined to believe he named rose pr1ck after himself. Lol!
Haha, I wouldn't put it past him, he's a very interesting character, I like his films too. Very thought provoking. Thanks for watching ❤️
I love hearing the stories behind names. Tom Ford is definitely one to challenge conventional norms. And that's why I like him and his style/ fragrances!
A lot of his fragrances are not easy wears but he's really the only more expensive brand that made me want to buy. I think that says a lot. If you love something, you love it!
I absolutely Adore the story of the MFK BR540. Knowing the story behind each note makes the experience that much more poetic! Love the research put into this!!
I knew some of these stories but not the details, so it was interesting to research them! Thanks for watching ❤️
I loved this deep-dive into perfume names! More, please! I’ve always wondered why Alien was so named. Also, on that same line, why the bottle was chosen for it (and other perfumes, for that matter!). Love your videos, Claire-keep up the great work!
Thank you! You know what?! I research Alien and nearly put it in this video 🤣 I will probably do a follow-up at some point and will probably put Alien in! I'm really happy that you enjoyed this! ❤️
@@dr.claire.perfume That would be great, Claire! I’ll be on the lookout for it 😀
@@medusabeheaded 👍
I did not know that about BR540. Very interesting! Tom Ford really likes to push the envelope with his names. You always teach me something in your videos! 💙
Happy to feed you random facts 🤣 Tom Ford's fragrance names are truly something else! 😂
Absolutely LOVED this content idea! I found it fascinating each story and really liked this video
Thank you Rachelle! I really happy that you enjoyed this! Thanks for watching ❤️
Thank you, Claire, for the educational video. I don't think Audrey would forbid the fragrance. Stars are stars, after all - for loving exposure and mystery and danger is just a part of it , part of advertising. It's like Tabac Blonde and some other names. They concurred it will draw sales.
Yes, calling something l'interdit would definitely encourage interest and sales! 😉 Thanks for watching ❤️
Hi Claire, another interesting name is Suicide Blond from HatemeLoveme....a phrase describing a woman who colors her hair blonde as "dyeing" from her own hand, making her a "suicide blonde"
That is really interesting ☺️ makes complete sense, such a good play on words! Love it ❤️
Love it!
Thank you ☺️
YEA !!!!!! I didn’t miss this one
Hey Frances ❤️
Wonderful, interesting video Claire! I look forward to learning something new from your videos. I think the Tom Ford names are not too subtle and very attention getting. I think anything that sounds 'forbidden' like the name of L'interit would have attracted attention for the same reason... (But who doesn't love Audrey Hepburn?) I don't think MFK has any regrets with Baccarat Rouge, that fragrance has made him very rich. It would be great to hear about other fragrances if your so inclined to do another video on this theme. I love hearing the history and stories behind the creation of beautiful things including perfume. Thanks for your video! - Jenn
Hey Jenn 😊 thank you! Yes me too! I always want to know why things are so. Curiosity always gets to me! I agree with Tom Ford, his name's have become progressively more extreme and overt. I think Audrey probably did say she forbade the release of the fragrance to others but just as a joke and I would think Givenchy just ran with it as a name. BR540 being successful looks like serendipity really, what if Francis K hadn't chosen to release it as a cheaper non limited edition version? Thanks for watching ❤️
Love this video ❤
Thank you! 🥰
I LOVE your videos....always!
Aww! Thank you 😊
Another super interesting video, Claire!!! Cool topic 💛💛💛
Thanks for watching Joss ❤️
Wow the reason behind the band Effing fabulous is so me!😂😂😂Love the reason for the name no doubt. I gotto say I love Tom Ford’s vibe he has to be a Leo!😂😂😂
He's pretty cool isn't he? Very exhuberant and enthusiastic about his brand!
Fascinating and informative
Thank you! 🥰
Like always 👍🏻
Thank you! ☺️
Interesting topic:) thx so much for original content 💖
No problem! Really happy you enjoyed it ☺️
What a great video, Claire! I hope you’ll do a series on fragrances names. Just fascinating!
Thank you! I really enjoyed finding out about these! I would love to do another video on some other fragrances, I will look into it! 😘
This is such unique and informative content 👏
Thank you! 🥰
very well explained
Thank you! 🥰
Dear Claire, you have certainly peaked my interest in regards to L’Interdit perfume. According to Wikipedia, the name originated due to Audrey Hepburn initially saying she forbids Givenchy from marketing the fragrance he made exclusively for her, and later not only agrees but even participates in the process and gives it that name. How fascinating indeed 👌🥰 I would love to smell the original version from 1950s, as it’s completely different from today’s note composition. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🌹🤗
Well that sounds like it could entirely explain it! I think she would have said I forbid it in a very coquettish way and probably didn't entirely mean it! 😂 I really like l'interdit! I think the range stands out. Unpopular opinion, but I like the jasmine one and the intense. 🤷♀️
@Claire Smith I don't own any of the fragrances from this line, however the closest to this scent would be Majestic Opulence from Zara and it's lovely 😍
@@sweetsimpleslowlife2709 aah I just bought my first Zara fragrance, I got exotic mimosa. It's not exotic 😂 do you know how long majestic opulence lasts? Is it ok or not very long?
@Claire Smith from my experience with Zara fragrances, and I have accumulated quite a few, the ones that come in tall bottles have really good performance, nice projection and decent lasting power, at least 6-8 hours and some up to 12 hrs or more. The ones in the square bottles are not as strong, although they seem to get better with time, after they macerate for a while. Hope this helps!
So interesting!!...especially the Baccarat Rouge!
I knew a bit of the story but not the bit about the chandelier glass! I quite enjoyed researching these. 🥰
Great share video happy day
Thank you! 🥰
I am more interested in the Crystals of baccarat lol incredible! Tom Ford if F”ing fabulous for sticking to what he wanted 😊 adore Hepburn, I’m not a fan of L’interdint but I would love to smell the original! This was fun Dr. Claire you are amazing 🤗✨
Thanks! Yes the original l'interdit sounds really quite different to the current release. I actually had no clue about the special glass and how it relates to BR540 🤷♀️ thanks for watching ❤️
I smelled the red one and wasn't impressed 😢 sad
Never clicked on a thumbnail so fast! 😅
Aww thanks 🥰
I’ve always thought Rose of No Man’s Land an interesting name; it remembers the selflessness of nurses during WW1, and apparently the soldiers called them this name.
I have a couple of samples of that one and I always thought of WW1 when I read the name but I didn't know that was the actual connection nor about it referring to the nurses! Wow, thanks for the info! ☺️
Fantastic Claire, such a great video idea! I loved all the background information it was so interesting! One might say it was F*** fabulous. Now I want to smell it! Also the L'interdit Givenchy. Beautiful bottle looks amazing! Thank you enjoyed this video!
Thank you for watching Denise! I really like l'interdit, I'm not so keen on fabulous, it's a bit strong for me I think! 😊
You never fail to surprise me and intrigue me with your research on fragrances ! I love hearing anything to do with the history of a fragrance
I’d like to think the best of Audrey Hepburn and say it was just a marketing ploy to draw people in with a bit of drama
Love Love LOVED 🥰

Yes me too! Audrey was fab! Thank you so much Frances 🥰 I hope you are having a good weekend! ❤️

It’s amazing learning the meaning to fragrance names
Thank you! 🥰
I always wondered how baccarat rouge 540 got it's name. Really cool, Claire 💙✨🌛
Thanks Tina ☺️
Great video again Claire ,I knew about the Collab between mfk and Baccarat ,I can't smell it I'm one of them but not too disappointed as it's more popular than oxygen 🤣
🤣 what an interesting way of putting it 🤣 I only tried the extrait actually. I do have a little sample of ana abiyedh rouge which I think people say is the closest dupe, I actually quite like that, but I don't like any of the other dupes or impressions I've tried. Thanks for watching ❤️
I knew the stories behind Baccarat Rouge 540 and L'Interdit , the Tom Ford's one I didn't know before, amazing video dear friend. Yes, I do believe Audrey Hepburn in fact said "I forbid you", but not in a meany way, this was a charmant way to describe how fascinated she felt about Givenchy's creation, she was a lovely personality❤️
Yes, maybe it was a joke that got twisted, you could be onto something there! That's the perfect explanation! Thanks for watching ❤️
I loved this Claire, so, so interesting!
I do think BR540 is an amazing scent and deserves the love it gets. I don't like it on me, mostly because I don't smell much apart from super candied sweet wafts. But Adam absolutely loves it and I think it smells much more woody and masculine on him.
Obvs not smelled the original, but the current L'Interdit is a great smelling fragrance, as is L'interdit Rouge. Too sweet for my taste but I do absolutely love tuberose, even if I have ones that I prefer.
So that just leaves the one with the F word... and I have never smelled it. 🤣
I tried effing fabulous last week and I wasn't fussed actually. Not for me.
BR540 is also not one I love. I only have a sample of the extrait but I find it cloying. I much prefer the ana abiyedh rouge Lattafa dupe! 😂 I'm cheap huh?! I would be curious to smell BR540 on a man close up actually. I did smell that or a dupe on someone 20m away a few weeks back! 😂 So strong!
I do like l'interdit and actually my favourites are the intense and the Jasmine flanker (no one else seems to like that one... Just me!).
Thanks for watching ❤️
@@dr.claire.perfume I bet the jasmine one would be awesome actually and the intense sounds interesting with the sesame 🖤
@@ems_h.eartnotes yes the seasame seems a little different to me each time, sometimes I really smell and other times not so much 🤷♀️
loved the stories even though I miraculously knew some of them! I didn't know some of the nitty gritty though. I like the FF perfume, but purposefully didn't buy it on discount when I saw it once because.......well.....yea. And it smells similar to something I already have. :)
I went to try FF and I wasn't in love with it. I think the only two from that line that I've tried and really enjoy are noir de noir and lost cherry (but the longevity of that is awful). I've noticed quite a few have been discontinued recently, I saw plum japonais at a huge discount but for a 250ml bottle, so I didn't because that would have been one other planet of a blind buy but actually relatively risk free because I've since seen people resell it for more than twice what it was selling for! 🤣
Claire this is such an interesting video. I love learning so much about fragrances. This makes me want to dig deeper into the fragrances I love it. My daughter loves Audrey Hepburn and has named her cat…cat. I’ve found most books made into movies are vastly different from the books.
Aaw that's such a lovely tribute! And cat is just the coolest cat! 🐈 I love the ending of the film and how important cat is in that ending too! Audrey was just so cool and quirky in that film. I can see why your daughter loves it! Thanks for watching ❤️
Awesome video, Claire ❣️ I didn't know the history of any of these fragrances so I was happy to learn from you 🙂✌️
And BTW- the cat is the star 🤣
Cat 🐈 rocks 😍
Thanks for watching Laurel 😊
Thanks Claire, great information here 👍 had no idea about bitter peach. Thought it was the type of peach used in the making of the scent🤣🤣🤣 how niave am I 😃
It could be that too, cos the peach is quite varying in the fragrance, it changes so the name fits in that way too, but you know from Mr Ford's other names, I don't think it's only that 😂
@@dr.claire.perfume yes I'd say its a double entendre 🤣
@@annoleary387 for sure! 👍
I am quite of your opinion as far as Audrey Hepburn is concerned. She seemed a very generous person and frankly I don't think she cared about the star system enough to want to create a myth around herself. Tom Ford is a very talented man. I wish I were rich enough to be able to try all of his fragrances but unfortunately this not the case😭
I agree, I can't see Audrey being that if fussed! I also love a lot of Tom ford fragrances and dislike a few too, I try them in department stores, they are gorgeous but just so expensive in the main, I do have three, but only from the less pricey range rather than the more expensive line 🙈 I want to try them all though! Thanks for watching ❤️
Bingewatchin' some of the older videos I haven't seen yet. Happy to relax while learning new stuff about fragrances ❤️ You have a talent of storytelling ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you, I really enjoyed making this video, I would love to make another like this 🥰
@@dr.claire.perfume Your passion is contagious 🙏 I had a feeling, when watching, that you were enjoying your time and it shows ❤️
Thank you! ☺️
Wow l had no clue about BR540. I thought they made numerous attempts at it and nailed it on the 540th time 😂
😂 that would also be logical! Kayali style! 👍
Loved the vid. I really like L’Interdit. I too find it hard to believe she forbade sharing the perfume but how well do we know public figures really. Thanks so much for researching the perfumes. The stories behind them are fascinating.
Yes I am not sure anyone knows the true story of what happened. Thanks for watching, have a good week! 😊
@@dr.claire.perfume you too. 😊
@@enaruvie thank you!
Another fascinating video, Claire 😊 Your topics are always so interesting. I only knew the basics of BR540’s name and delving into the original formulation was very cool. I had no idea about the golden-red crystal. 🥰 As you mentioned, names are an integral part of the marketing. One fragrance on my mind is YSL Babycat from Les Vestiaires collection. Babycat meaning leopard print. That said, I think it just sounds fun and daring. Coupled with its near impossibility to buy right now, a beautiful minimal bottle, and the prestige price point, I think it’s success is due to more than just smelling nice. 😉
Yes! I want to try Babycat! Some people have said it's a little underwhelming but yes the name is unbelievably cool isn't it 🤣 who wouldn't want to tell someone that they are wearing Babycat?! 🤣 Inspired name from YSL! 🥰
@@dr.claire.perfume Right? It just sounds cool. Black Opium had a Babycat limited edition bottle - red and black leopard print. I wonder how that fared.
@@Melissa__F oh yes, I remember that! If I'd have wanted a new bottle at the time I would have chosen that one over the normal bottle, it was very striking.
Now I need to watch Breakfast at Tiffany's. My ginger (Paprika) is also a good actor! He loves being on camera
Have you not seen it?! 😱 Yes! If you love cats, please watch it! 🐈
@@dr.claire.perfume I didn't think I would like it. I definitely will
@@silverliningfragrance1434 Audrey is quite annoying in it if you don't just let the whole thing be what it is and it is now looking racist with how one character is portrayed but the cat is worth seeing 😊
Great video, Claire. You’re a wonderful storyteller and I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about these fragrances.
Wondering if there is a story behind Mugler Angel and if so, would love to see that in a future video 💕
Thank you! ❤️ Happy that you enjoyed it ☺️ Did you see my Mugler house history video? There's a section on Angel, so this might cover it, not sure! ruclips.net/video/WEcdVhn1Obs/видео.html

No problem! 🥰
Interesting story regarding BR540. This became quickly a bestseller. Now we know how they came with the name for that Tom Ford fragrance. 🙈Oh yes, many stories are going around about L'Interdit. Love that cat from the movie
Cat is truly the best! 🐈 So cute too! Thanks for watching ❤️
Hi dear claire❤🥰
What a fascinating story behind the name of baccarat rouge!
I am testing a decant of Tom Ford lost cherry. I get the cherry in the opening then it's totally gone. On my skin It's all about bitter almond. Is it the reason why it's called lost cherry?
I have loved the idea of this video. So enjoyable and informative as always ❤😘
Thank you! ❤️
Haha! I have no idea! I get a cherry Bakewell smell from lost cherry, so like cherry and almond frangipane tart. I love it, but it's gone in 40 mins 🤷♀️
I hope you have a lovely weekend! ❤️
Great topic! I love Nishane perfume names they're so cool
Also cheap companies have the most awkward names (La Rive "In Woman"😹😹)
La Rive is the worst 🤣 I might make a second video at some point!
@@dr.claire.perfume Please do😸😸
@@silverliningfragrance1434 👍
Another great idea for a video 🥰. Yes, a lot of us are curious how and why did companies have chosen a certain name for a perfume.. At least we are, perfume aficionados 😍. I have a friend that after I told her about Misia from Chanel, who was Misia etc...she told me "Maybe you should do a video about perfumes names and all that?". I wondered if she was supportive... Or tried to get rid of me 😅🤗, in a constructive manner, of course
Yes Chanel have some interesting name stories, boy and Misia are fab examples. I do think videos are fragrance names and history are pretty niche but it's good to do something different occasionally. Thanks for watching ❤️
@@dr.claire.perfume ❤️
The reason behind BKR540 was really interesting.
I knew it was to do with glass but not really more than that, I'm glad I found out!
Interesting stories behind those name got me curious about the original formulation of l'interdit (audrey hepburn's) perfume 🧡
Yes! I think Givenchy were wise to relaunch l'interdit but clearly people will continue to be curious about how the original smelt! Thanks for watching ❤️
Well I thought so much more was needed about 👅🍑 💦 Bitter peach 😂.
Yes Mr Ford does have some risqué names, you can tell he's one of the UKs best indie perfumers favourite.
I didn't know anything about the Givenchy but that is a really good story. I don't know with Audrey obviously she was always lovely in film but maybe she was a diva and I do doubt she had any choice at all about it's release, she was only the inspiration I guess.
Effin Fabulous for me is Effing not my effin cup of tea. Way too effing sharp 🤣 you're allowed to Eff on my videos now
Br540 was one I knew about but why the chuff it's so popular is a mystery to me. Maybe it was that intregue with it being limited at first?
Very good video mate and very interesting
Haha, only you would suggest I find the meaning of bitter peach 🤦♀️ I kind of obliged 😂 here have an emoji for getting me to look into it 🍑 😂 do you mean ATH loves him? I can see the perfume naming ideas crossing over a bit between the two 😂
From what others are saying about Audrey, I think the version I want to believe is that she initially said i forbid it coquettishly, as a joke and then it got taken as more seriously be history, because she later supported and promoted the release.
I went to try effing fabulous a few weeks ago, it wasn't for me either 🤷♀️ few of Tom Ford fragrances are loves from the private line from the ones I've tried.
I don't get the br540 thing either, but wow, what a hit for Francis K?! That must be a double-edged sword really. He's had so many other successful fragrances but they just get somewhat overshadowed now! 🤷♀️
I might be wrong but I think I've read back in the day that Acqua di Gio is a scent that Armani created inspired by a vacation he took in the Meditarranean Sea and the color (of the bottle and liquid) is like the water. But I might be wrong
That would make total sense! ❤️
I don't love BR540, but I can recognize that it's a revolutionary fragrance that was unique when it came out. It's a very distinct DNA, love it or hate it.
Mentioning Tom Ford made me think of Black Orchid. Nothing daring about the name, but it's rumored that Tom Ford wanted the fragrance to smell like a man's crotch.
Oh wow! I guess that would figure given the association with orchid tubers and male genitalia. That's really interesting! I will have a read about that!
Same with BR540. I've never been a fan but I do see that it's spawned a whole new category of fragrance. Thanks for watching ❤️
I didn't know that about L'Interdit!
I think the true story has somewhat been lost but it effectively could be both, her forbidding it coquettishly and then relenting? I don't know, I guess we never will know! Thanks for watching ❤️
In an effort to seem new and challenge the perfume "establishment," we now have indie houses using what I call "anti-names." And yes, I am referring particularly to Etat Libre d'Orange. Would you rush to purchase something called "Fat Electrician Semi-Modern Vetiver"? or "Delicious Closet Queen?" I think some people might feel uncomfortable requesting a perfume by such a title. But that's probably intentional on Etat's part -- it goes with their "bad-boy" reputation. It just reminds me of sniggering teenagers trying to shock.
Then on the other hand, there are niche houses that just use a combination of letters and numbers for each perfume in an effort to appear "edgy." That doesn't tell the consumer anything about the fragrance and makes it more difficult to remember and distinguish between them all.
So I find it very refreshing that there could be a perfume called "F***** Fabulous." It's edgy and tells you something about the perfume. Tom Ford showed how that could be done.
Yes! Those Etat libre d'orange fragrances have really strange names 🤣 and actually the bon parfumeur fragrances really confuse me, I remember trying one and really liking it but I've no clue which it was because they use numbers for their fragrance names 🤷♀️
Tom Ford's names are quite interesting in the main and most tell you something about how it smells. Thanks for watching ☺️
Super interesting the L'interdit story. I'm guessing that Audrey didn't forbide it and it's just a rumor, but I don't know🤷♀
I think maybe she did say it, but in a jokey way and it got misconstrued maybe? Not sure!
@@dr.claire.perfume Probably, could be a mutual "spin"
@@silverliningfragrance1434 I agree
I heard that Rihanna hyped up Kilian not BR540, but she can hype up cement or even dust if she'll say she's using it😸😸
She was reported to be wearing BR540 at one point, I double checked cos I always associated her with Love don't be shy too! And yes, she'd hype anything! 🤣
@@dr.claire.perfume Then I'm probably wrong (and she probably has many more perfumes)
@@silverliningfragrance1434 I have no idea whether the press actually knew what she wore or whether they were guessing though? I know the love don't be shy report was from someone who said they were friends with her, but what they'd be doing talking to the press is anyone's guess!
@@dr.claire.perfume There is this rumor that she smell divine so everybody is asking what is she wearing. In other words, PR😉
Lol considering that Tom ford fragrances have the most interesting names on the market I know this is going to be interesting.
