Watched this last night and it’s still haunting me. Jeremy Irons is one of the best actors of the 80’s and 90’s. He’s so good at playing a proper British man and then taking him to a dark place.

Just learnt about this film!
I love the way the narrator says, “Stephen Fleming thought he had everything life could offer”. Pause for some character dialogue... “He was wrong”. I’ve often found trailer narration to be rather monotonous, but here it works wonderfully, as straightaway we know where we stand with Fleming.
You don't really hear trailer narration anymore and I have to admit it sounds a little corny now.
The movie left me with a despair feeling. It was a tragedy. It's a sort of movie that leaves a mark in your memories. If that happens in real life then it's very sad. I really felt for Miranda Richardson's character. It brought me tears.

I watched this film that year and found it absolutely amazing. Have rewatched it over the years and it's still great. The cast is a jewel box and the director is a god. What a great tragic film.

I would have told the clueless executives at Netflix to leave this one alone, and not to bother with a silly "remake". It was made from Josephine Hart's fantastic novel, with Louis Malle directing the cream of English and French cinema. I got my DVD of this film years ago, and it is still a treasure in my collection.
God, that movie's harsh. I saw it when I rented it from a video store soon after it's theatrical release and it's stuck with me all this time. Man, it's harsh.
Irons, Binoche, all of them, such great acting. And it's not about the sex, wanna see that, porn is all too accessible, it's about the obsession, man. Good god, the obsession will kill you.
BTW, real sex, not porn sex, is pretty awkward; this movie rang true in that sense.

This is such an incredible movie, it's the kind of thing where I have asked anyone in the room and out of 10 people, the 3 that have seen it just look at each other and nod in solemnity... The cast, the music, the pacing, the set dressing! Oooooh

It can bring you to life and it can damage you irrevocably, obsession. What is obsession? A hunger for passion, for meaning, for the blood in one's life, transcendence.
You can have an 'obsession' for dolls or teddy bears ‼️ What went on in this film, imo, was real Passion. If you have never experienced it, you have not lived.
@@joline2730 But take care not to confuse or equate obsession with attachment. For me, living is about finding & engaging in one's passion, meaning one's own Truth, without apologies or requiring permission/approval. Just do YOU. All roads lead home to one's true Self; sometimes a damaging obsession provides the very avenue to one's Self. I feel that people are really just looking for themselves in others, something real....

Oh yes Jeremy Irons had the photo of him with Rupert Graves and Juliette Binoche, blown up to life size and he spent most of his time as a recluse just staring at it.

io,come altre ammiratrici di Jeremy Irons non riesco a smettere di vedere questo film.perchè fa meditare molto sulla vita e perchè Irons ha un fascino tutto suo,che lo rende diverso da altri attori,perfino più belli.ci si incanta davvero a guardarlo dritto negli occhi.fa colpo sulle persone giovani e su quelle che,come me,hanno sette/otto anni di meno di lui
da bambina quasi adolescente come te trovavo super accattivante ogni personaggio di Jeremy Irons. Come hai detto tu. Poi feci l'errore di vedere il film di Tornatore, Le conversazioni, e tutto cambiò. Purtroppo è riuscito a rendere ridicolo Jeremy Irons. Nonostante fosse un film drammatico siamo usciti dal cinema con le lacrime agli occhi dalle risate.

Jeremy Irons's perfomrnace was amazing, shame that the character he played was a selfish POS who cared about nobody and didn't give a fuck about destroying his relationship with his son and family in order to be with his son's girlfriend, in the end he paid the price and what a painful way to do so.
Seven years later- films are not here for you to judge a characters motives. This is not how you should measure a film, or a character…
correct, human beings often have been overwhelmed by passions all sorts of passions, sexual to maniacal, not in their control, and so many things happen from wars to rest...

I went to the cinema to see this. The whole theatre was in stitches of laughter.....its just so ridiculous when he goes to her house for the first time and they don't utter a word to each other.

I watched Obsession and it immediately seemed very familiar, but I think the chemistry / performance of Irons and Binoche is way more convincing than that of the actors in the series. Made me want to watch the 'original' movie. Shame Netflix does not stream it as well, interesting to compare.

rimane impresso in questo film la delusione della figlia ,quando ,di notte,sorprende Anna,una ragazza che lei detesta ed il padre .poi,preferisce sviare lo sguardo,perché lei,che già ha un fidanzatino,capisce che c'è qualcosa tra il suo papà ancora attraente,e quella ragazza,che non apprezza per niente.le figlie,notoriamente attaccate al padre,intuiscono subito questo genere di pericolo

I feel like that was intentional, this isn’t 9 1/2 weeks. Their relationship is supposed to make the viewer feel uncomfortable. The sex scene where the son walked in on them was particularly unsettling and awkward which added shock value and made the scene pack more of a punch.
