What year is your fender brother
Still watching you Marty after over a decade. Only now ur found in better neighborhoods: axis t.v., RUclips Shorts,
My anxiety levels trying to tune an octave up: 📈
no you have to use a special set of Nashville tuning strings that are lighter gauge
@@MartyMusic
My bad. I didn’t realise you mentioned D’Addario making a specific set of strings.
Cheers Marty🤘🏼
@@konnermurphylikely, if the strings don't just break
@@pinio5132if the strings don’t break, the guitar will
@@M.GodfreyI had a set on my Yamaha LL6M acoustic for 3 months without any issues.
You can either buy the D’Adarrio set or get a 12-string set and use the octave strings for the 3rd - 6th strings along with one each of the 1st and 2nd strings. That leaves you with a standard 6-string set you can put on another guitar.
Nashville tuning is gold

@@paninovevo1162 But what IS Nashville tuning???
It’s AMAZING to see how AMAZED he is learning new guitar things…
So AMAZING, literally MIND BLOWN, INCREDIBLE Nashville tuning, so AMAZINGLY INCREDIBLY MIND BLOWING.
@@chrisolley2762 YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED NEXT!
Wait.. WHAT?!?
I started playing guitar when I was 13. I'm 27 now and guitar is my life passion and work. I owe a great majority of what I've learned directly to Marty. So heartwarming to see him still doing the same stuff all these years later. You're amazing Marty thank you so much.
Priceless acoustic guitar trick for recording - blend in lightly over electric, it's amazing.
Yep! Gold in the studio!
instructions unclear. my guitar turned into an archery bow
That dude picked the most difficult way possible to explain what tuning it was in
I enjoyed the ride
As a guitar teacher you'd think he could explain it easier... his lessons are horrible compared to other teachers imo
How? That was perfectly understsndable
@@jaymac2702he’s not that bad
He literally listed the strings and the tuning and then told you what you can do with it in, and it’s clear he’s passionate about it, I don’t see the issue lmao
The Nashville strings were too expensive for me here so i made a makeshift one with the gbe strings replacing ead to tune it up 💀
The easiest/cheapest way is to buy a 12 string set & split them. That gives you one Nashville set & one standard set.
Is it strange to play with no wound strings?
@@danwhitehurst9592 Not as strange as the way it sounds/where the notes are... If you try to play scales or lead/melody parts that you know, the fact that 4 of the strings are an octave higher than standard is really odd!
The 6th string is still wound on mine.
Guitar player for almost 30 years and Ive just had my mind blown
Love this short, sharing knowledge!!!
It just goes to show you that there's always something to learn. You'd think running in the circles that Krasno runs in and the accomplished player he is, he would know what Nashville tuning is. Also love what a great teacher Marty is and how excited he is to be able to show Mr. Eric Krasno something new! See you in April en la Playa Mr. Krasno!
I was today years old when I found this out. Very cool. I play twelve string and never had occassion to tune this way, because I do not play six string. I can play six, obviously. I always felt like I was missing that secondary sound when I played on a six.
Eric Krasno is one of my all time favorite guitar players.
Funny thing. I follow pretty much all things guitar and daily hear of new-to me players. Recently after a concert introduced my daughter back stage to some Grammy winning guitar players and other players. (A few toured for decades in bands playing arenas as headliners). Found out she heard of most too. Many are beyond her mid- forty age group. I suck at music but appreciate the genius of all you dedicated musicians. It is a tough business.
Thank you all for your talent and years of hard work and dedication.
I learned this from Johnny Marr. I love Nashville tuning.
Marty's smile at the E Major is what playing with people and learning new things is all about!
This man has helped me learn to play a lot of things over the years. I haven’t had much time to practice though with getting through my addiction and being busy between work and my son. Still can play Hotel California and a few others. Thank you Marty ❤
Why did I always assume it was another name for open G tuning? I’m humbled!

@@DiegoGonzalez-jo2tw Tuned from low to high, D-G-D-G-B-D. Famously used by Kieth Richards in The Rolling Stones but many others as well. Great for playing slide.

Marty is the real musician among RUclips poser's.
Now I understand why Marty is the number one go to guy for RUclips guitar lessons. This dude knows a lot of shit. He’s a very well rounded individual.
Cool but why not just use a 12 String? It’s fuller.
Honestly, there's almost no real application for this, for most people.
Just Nashville BS.
Actually....take the high "drone" string out of a 12 string set (unwound). Put on six string guitar....gives you a much thinner sound. Can also capo one octave up for that very thin background strumming. Really fattens up a mix !!!!!...😊😊
Pat Metheny used this tuning on one of the guitars on the track Phase Dance.
Y’all scared of going up a single octave have y’all met shoegaze and math rock yet lol
Hey You - Pink Floyd
Couldn't you just tune the top two strings down and not worry about breaking your strings
Ive had a pack of D'addario Nashville tuning string set in my guitar case for years but i always say _"Im just gunna use the strings that im use to.."_ everytime i change strings. Lol
It's best if you have another guitar that you can string up with those strings.
Love it
love it
I have a bunch of guitars, and I use a gorgeous little gym for my Nashville tuning, and she just sings!
They ask him what Nashville tuning is then when he's telling them they talk over him
I feel like he just wanted to know the notes of each string. They're pro guitarists, they don't need a drawn out explanation.
@@Kyle97xthere wasn't a long explanation and a pro guitarist would know what Nashville tuning is and it wouldn't "blow your mind"
@@R_Thomp it was a long explanation relevant to saying 6 letters. "What is Nashville tuning?", a pro asks. You can either waffle on about octaves or just say six letters and then explain the theory.
1. A pro guitarist isn't omniscient about guitar. Pros are allowed to not know things.
2. The guy was exaggerating when he said it was blowing his mind. It's called joking around.
@@Kyle97x that's a whole lotta opinion & reframing. They didn't know what it was, he wasn't giving a long explanation, and they should have let him finish. Don't tell me about pro guitar players, I've been playing for 38 years and learned from a professional studio musician, who learned from a professional musician, who learned from a very famous musician.
@@R_Thomp It's great that you've been playing for 38 years. Unfortunately, that doesn't prevent the basic, irrefutable idea that a pro musician can lack some knowledge within their field. Perhaps not you though. You're just that amazing.
It is my opinion... that's how most conversations work.
Don't do this with your regular strings. If you didn't listen closely, he said they are a set of Nashville strings on his guitar that are designed to be tuned that way without excessive tension. He should've reiterated it.
I have a Baby Taylor that I set up Nashville strung. I really like it that way, so I had to buy another one to keep in standard tuning!
They sound great when we jam with the pair of them.
So glad to see Masters of strings mentioned: the D''Addario family in the business starting in Italy 300+ years ago.
Baritone tuning on the left, Nashville on the right, standard down the middle
Imagine showing KRAZ something on guitar?! 😮❤
Yeah there is no way Eric krasno didn’t know what Nashville tuning is. Eric Krasno has played everywhere and with everyone lol
he's my really good friend and he honestly didn't know it. that was legit
What's funny about Kraz though is he's so instinctual he really doesn't think about what he's playing at all, it just comes out.
Hey You by Pink Floyd is played with a modified Nashville tuning
I have asked a ton of guitar players what Nashville tuning was. I wish I had the answers I have gotten for 20 years. It started for me when the Eagles Take it easy, i could play along buy you could hear the slight diffrent tone. I asked and was told one guitar is Nashville tuned but the cords are the same. Now I see what they are doing inside that song. Still have to have two guitars play it close to the recorded version.
*chords
@garrystubbs4891 I might have ment location 🤔. LoL
How can you be an American guitarist that old and not know what Nashville tuning is?
this is how you play the guitar part in 'hey you' from pink floyd
No this is how you end up at the store buying new strings
Using normal strings? Or do you have to compensate for tension?
I just kept hearing Wicked Game, in that Nashville tuning.
Nashville tuning was used on the "Nashville Cats" single by The Loving Spoonful and extensively on their third studio album, titled "Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful." The album was released in 1966 and featured some of their most well-known songs, including "Summer in the City" and "Rain on the Roof." "Nashville Cats" became one of the highlights of the album and showcased the band's folk-rock sound and John Sebastian's songwriting skills.
"Summer In the City" 45 single was the first record I ever bought - I was 12.
It was after school and I left it on the upstairs front seat of a double decker bus. Despite standing at the bus stop asking every #10 bus conductor for hours I never got it back. I don't blame TLS... 😂
Very pretty. Love Nashville, you have such dedicated musicians
I thought the EAD we're raised an octave and the gbe were still the same not the G as well. I still haven't tried it yet. I'll have to do both and see which one I like more
There are a couple of variations. Sometimes called 'Nashville', sometimes called 'High-strung', basically the same idea tho'.
Thats cool. Open G tuning is another one thats cool
Dude…… I’m 90% sure this guy is related to fat mike from NOFX. Same mannerisms, same smile….. they even look a little similar. If I’m wrong, go ahead and keep it to yourself.❤
I can't believe this guy plays guitar and doesn't know what Nashville tuning is
idk what this means but it sounds sick
I thought that was Greg Koch at first asking what Nashville tuning is, because he looks alot like him, but then I turned up the volume to hear his voice better and then knew it wasn't him. Greg has a very recognizable voice. I was like, there's no way Greg Koch doesn't know what Nashville tuning is.
Try Nashville tuning on a Guitar-Banjo…it really mimics a 5-string better
Made a note, need those strings or snappy strings could fly in your face 😢
The first two strings of your guitar (high E and B) remain unchanged and the lower four strings (G through low E) are tuned an octave above standard tuning. Nashville tuning
Nashville cats get work before they’re two
@martymusic
Long time listener and just wanted to offer some advice or input on your videos!
Would be awesome to see some sort of graphic of what you are talking about when you are describing it.
Thanks!
May the Shwartz be with you Marty!
"Hey You" - Pink Floyd 🗿
Guess I get it wrong. Octave up E? Means he tune the E2 to E3?
its the higher String from a 12-String guitar. Its naturally an octave higher
I have a secret mod that turns the phase and pickup configuration into a pseudo-12 string on my Fender Strat.
Only 2 guitars in the world have my secret mod😉
Part of the 12 string sound is the strings fucking each other up bc they so close tho
I saw a bin at guitar center full of D'addario Nashville acoustic strings for $3.99 a set. This was a few months back in Spokane Wa
love your work Marty
I think true Nashville tunung also uses a mixture of steel and nylon strings
good clip but needs more writing all over it so we can only see the guys' heads
People have been using that tuning for many years in studios. If you play guitar and don’t know about it you need to go study up now. Start with Paul Simon
Is this guy literally talking to himself?
Actually the one on the left is slightly less obese than the one on the right
not what I was taught. I was taught that it was the wound string replaced by the unwound replacements from a 12 string.
Keith Richards used the shit out of this tuning. Beautiful!
My old metal band I had twenty years ago or so used Nashville tuning quite a bit but we dropped it down two whole steps. Works great with saturated distortion
It just the top strings of a twelve string. Nothing complicated. It's been used for 70+ years.
Do I play guitar? No. Am I ever gonna use this? No. Did I watch it multiply times? Yes! 🤷🏽
Ok … weird difficult tuning. Check. Any song examples or just that it’s hella cool. 😂
elliott smith tomorrow tomorrow best song in nashville tuning
for a fine example of Nashville tuning please refer to Joe Satriani - Friends from the album The Extremist 👍🏼
How the f*** does Marty have a signature guitar everybody should have a significant guitar at this point
Hey you by pink Floyd uses Nashville tuning
Same with comfortably numb
You need to take just the high strings from a 12 string set to do this or buy a set of Nashville tuning strings do not do this with your regular strings it’s not the same
An octave up, ide be worried if my my truss rod would be enough to stop it warping. Let alone waiting for the string to snap
Born and raised in Nashville and never heard of this. But I’m also a drummer so maybe I didn’t pay a lot of attention to that. Lol
He might as well have called it Sean’s Stash
Can someone explain what this tuning achieves ? What’s the significance of Nashville tuning?
Octave up? How do the strings not break?
12-string guitar strings
Geez - did anybody listen? Special strings.
Hey marty you think i can play some van Halen in this tuning? I bet it would sound really good. Great vid.
Didn’t gilmour do this but the low e was two octaves up?
That's called a highstring guitar.
IVE LITERALLY HAVE ALWAYS DONE THIS ON MY OWN SINCE I WAS 13 I TAUGHT MYSELF TO PLAY BUT THE STRUMMING OF THE STANDARD G CHORD OR WHEN PICKING A SONG NEVER DID SOUND FINELY TUNED TO ME SO I ALWAYS Went up a OCTAVE UP ON THOSE STRINGS TO MAKE WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A PERFECT PITCH !! IM 40 NOW AND STILL DO THIS
I've heard this referred to as a "high strung" guitar, or as some producers said, "put some angel hair on it".
Couldn’t imagine picking up a guitar to play country music
It's called Nashville tuning but it's not for Country
I have one guitar high strung (Nashville) that I play every day. Are you in Oregon by chance?
Just octave up a regular guitar ffs or buy a 12 string. That tuning is the worst I’ve ever seen.
Big brain and producer friendly
Nashville "tuning" has to be the worst possible way to describe literally using a smaller set of strings to achieve a higher octave of the standard tuning
never seen a good explanation pf Nashville Tuning. It's always a mess.
Is it just me or has alternative tunings and capos caused way to much resistance to playing music.
Or you could just play a 12 string 😎
My fav is an acoustic electric 12 ultra Ovation 😊
Only a psychopath tunes from the high strings up, especially with a trem...
What he said. Yer blowin my mind right now. 😊🤙🤙
Strictly a slack/KEY G Player of folk music and the blues least I tried
Honestly just cut the low strings on a 12 string and your pretty much set lol
