The uproar is because , in my mind , you don't give Prince his full respect by comparing him to a R&B and Pop singer. Prince has multiple instrumental albums , he has The NPG Orchestra , etc etc Prince's music doesn't even need lyrics ( although his lyrics were like no other ). You can compare people like Sammy Davis Jr. , Fred Astaire , or even Usher to MJ.

For me growing up in Kyoto Japan my parents were heavy into Jazz & blues. So prince being an elite musician, playing over 20 instruments, they always played Prince everyday & i would hear them play mostly the jackson 5 stuff or MJ'S off the wall album. For me personally what MJ did dance wise is what Prince did for me with instruments. No offense to the common pop crowd but if you hang with them they don't even know the difference between an electric guitar or bass & usually a 4 minute piano solo bores them to death. We saw this when we watched the Kendrick vs Drake battle, where the Drake fans only obseseed of numbers and views but the amount of records you sale doesn't define the greater art. Prince has my soul & MJ has my heart. I think the world needed both of them, even tho they had totally different approaches to music. I sometimes feel that they were twins flames in a way. They had a rivalry but also people made it more toxic than it was. There's literally stories from bands members of MJ & Prince hanging out privately. Lenny Kravitz for example has a story on hanging with both Prince & MJ in the studio together. We all know as Prince fans that Prince wasn't going to be around someone he didn't like & we all know as MJ fans that MJ wasn't going to hang out with someone he didn't like as well. So clearly their rivalry was not that toxic. Also when MJ was going through that horrible court trial, Prince publicly defended him it's on youtube. Prince never spoke ill of MJ & kenny ortega on the Oprah interview said that MJ loved Prince & played Purple Rain a lot. Kenny also asked MJ to take break during This is it rehearsal & MJ said " i can't do that because God will give the ideas to Prince." MJ also clearly respected Prince too & MJ never talked about any other artist like that. I'm more a Prince fan but overall i love MJ too. I like more so his earlier work from off the wall & before. I just want to imagine if our generation brought both fan bases together. We'd be stronger than Taylor Swift and Beyonce combined! 🤗

I'll put it this way for the people in the comments debating MJ or Prince. I'm a fan of both and they are both legends in their own way. Michael didn't play instruments as he didn't have to, Prince could and DID. Michael was much more of a dancer, Prince was more of the musician. Love them both to death, no one can replace either of them.

MJ was the greatest pop star. Prince the greatest rock star. Who also mastered Pop. And wrote, produced and composed all his own music by himself. And was a high level musician, singer and dancer. MJ had the kids and was more broad and less risqué and thus sold more records. Both were once in a million lifetimes supernovas of talent. Gone to soon.
