  • The Spanish football governing body has released a statement saying Olga Carmona, whose brilliancy insured the La Roja's win, was notified of her father's death after the World Cup final.
According to BBC, Carmona's father died on Friday but her friends and family kept the news from her so she could focus on the all-important match against England.

If you look at both sides of it it's very hard to keep something like that from somebody but it's understandable in this context. However my dad passed away when I was still in college and I was there for him. I took a little bit of time away from my studies but it was worth it. It's a very mixed bag of emotions and while her family might have done the right thing it's probably going to be a bit harder on her since its a very bittersweet moment. She probably wished she could've been there to say goodbye.

Yes, the family did the right thing. One hopes that the father either saw, here on Earth or in Heaven, his daughter's triumphant moment and feel that immense pride for her. Olga Carmona will be happy and sad at the same time. Her performance would be a fitting tribute to her father. I feel her pain, and yet her jubilation. Life, it seems, is a circle that never ends. This is Olga's moment. Let her celebrate both her achievement and her father.

Good move by a patriotic family. Olga shinned and scored a historical goal, and fully celebrated the win, exactly like how her dad wanted. And the team wasn’t demoralised by a sad news. Olga scored twice for Spain. First was the 90th second winner against Sweet in the semifinal. And the only goal of the final.
