This episode reminding me of my 1987 introduction to sailing at a local community college classes on a Pearson 27. Along with long nights watching the America’s Cup from Fremantle in the middle of the night with 3 young children and work with no sleep. My first boat was a Tanzer 16, it was such a lovely boat. You inspired me to get back into sailing again on Lake Champlain I will keep you updated Captain and Ran=day, thank you again.

Every time Captain Q shows a boat you can tell he’s thinking about how great it would be to be out sailing it! He’s planning in his mind where he’s going to put all of his stuff.
Thanks so much for your comment about my "thoughts." (The oh so hopeless Hunter 23) ~. Definitely a "sweetheart" here. (probably sold a week after you posted this.). All your comments are so valuable. ~~~ I am mixed about making my boat "sailable and trailerable". versus a chain saw and the dump. Maybe I can get it so it sails and then sell it. But I am facing removing the keel ~~~ (now under a tarp for the winter.). Oh well. Thanks again for all that you do.
This is such a well though out boat, a gem. Its the sort of boat I would love to sail on my own and disappear for the summer into the coastal waters and maybe futher.
Really enjoy your reviews, and even if they are not boats that I would consider, the way that you walk the entire boat in and out pointing out everything from the most obvious to the rare features is very very informative and can be translated to boats I may look at. For instance I just learned why some galley counters are diagonal! And thank you for the sloop! 😉
Hey captain, this is an amazing boat, well thought out. If we didn’t have the Durbeck 53, no lie I would want this boat. This is a teriffic boat, thanks for this tour
Capt. Q Thanks for another delightful review. The Orion is without question a 10. This "little" boat will take you anywhere and handle more foul weather than you. I look at this boat and see what you could do with it. Rear arch to hold the solar panels, radar on extension pole, GPS antenna, dingy hoist and secure system. Increase fuel tankage to 50 gal. Water to 50 as well, 12 volt water maker and refrigeration, 3 bladed folding prop (with 13 HP the 3 blade would help with speed a tad) 2 burner Princess stove with oven (propane, alcohol take to long to fry my bacon) New Chart plotter, AIS, VHF, radar. With all those goodies you wouldl be looking at a very well spec'd blue water voyager capable of very long passages and stay at under 30K. Damn that is hard to beat! Be happy, be safe.
I would buy it today. My age and where I live keep me back to go forwards on this super deal! But I know the person who buy this great sailing vessel will be the happiest sailor on this planet. Thank you Kaptn for showing us this great find. Keep warm and safe, looking forward to your next great discovery.
One of the best pocket cruisers ever built. I almost bought one back in the early 80's but found a Morgan Outisland 41 ketch tall rig instead. Would love to have this boat now.
I can't see rating this boat a 20 until the woven roving in the engine room at 12:50 is explained. What is it hiding? Then there is the bow and deck problems. I'd run away from this one but don't slip in the snow.
Normally they show some really great boats but while watching this, I was also thinking “I’d pass on this ol girl”. That thing ain’t seen the ocean in probably a decade. You’re going to spend the asking price fixing it.
Another amazing deal Capt'n Q. The bigger sister to this boat is not another Pacific Seacraft which were design by W. Crealock, but the DownEast 38 which was designed by Henry Morschaldt. Many of of the design cues are shared by both vessels including the wineglass stern and carvel planking on fiberglass.
Thank you for that update I hadn’t really put those two boats together but now that you mention it it rings a little bell thank you for your info and for watching
Comparing this boat to the Nimble 30 (Episode 20) is a great demonstration that you have to know what the intended use of your boat is (and also how much work you are willing to do / have done) . Their price points are almost exactly the same and they are more or less the same length on deck. They are both handsome, with lots of traditional elements. That particular Nimble obviously has had lots of TLC - it could be ready to be launched in a day (though it certainly isn't perfect); the Orion needs essential work (including bowsprit and possibly compression post). Their displacement / length ratios are dramatically different (the Orion's is more than twice that of the Nimble - it has a shorter waterline length and weighs about 50% more). Not only is the Nimble lighter, it has a greater sail area / displacement ratio (> 20), and less wetted surface area; one would expect it to be faster and, well, more nimble. lol Though at least one has reportedly circumnavigated, the Nimble is probably best suited as a daysailer or coastal cruiser; the Orion has designs to be bluewater for a solo sailor or couple. Caveat emptor!
i think for the money 27 feet is just perfect. If I weren't stuck in Amarillo Texas I would sure try to buy a good one. we had a blast on our little 24 footer in Miami on weekends.
Actually we had some good thermal heating up on that mountain top and we’re not that cold except for our feet but when we got down to sea level in Augusta at the Kennebunk River with about a 10 or 15 mile an hour breeze that was cold!!!
I had a Columbia 8.3, similar vintage and size, nowhere near the space of this boat! I didn't have a proper galley or shower or chart table, or quarter birth, this was a well laid out boat great find. Thank you for sharing. Also I like your honest rating system, one of my dream boats, the Shannon(not so much now), didn't rate as high, very telling, as this weeks entry was better below, and I suspect from the rating as capable underway. These are great videos, I passed on an O'Day once primarily due to a compression post issue, but there is a fix it seems. I hope you all cross paths with a Tartan 27 and a Pearson 30 in the future.
Idea. Next time bring a boat repair expert with you (or have him review it later) and have him give estimates of what needs to be repaired and how much would it cost if you paid a boat yard to repair it.
great idea, but who pays the expert for his or her time to do this? Maybe if they are not too far they do it for the value of the advertising, but I doubt it. Especially if they're already busy.
My screensaver is a Pacific Seacraft 34, WIB Crealock design. I call Pacific Seacraft boats passagemakers, you won't wish you had bought a more seaworthy boat when your situation gets dicey. On the con side, they cost more. Not so with this one. What a find!
If your interested in coming to Seattle,, my girlfriend has a 1985 Hunter 34' with exceptionally brilliant wood interior. The interior will top just about every boat Captain Q has reviewed to my knowledge so far. Even has new Dickerson propane fireplace/heater. It's a great boat for someone who wants to put on a new gelcoat or paint. Redoing exterior teak trimmings now, and once done, all wood would be considered in excellent condition. Its a solid boat, previous owner sailed it to Hawaii twice, and is fully liveable. $49,000. Comes with numerous sails, dinghy, 2 outboards for dinghy, everything you need.
I enjoy the walk throughs. The PSC Orion came with two layouts: A and C. This is the A layout. The C layout omits the chart table for a bigger galley and has a larger head and vberth, and smaller opposing dinette. There were options for tiller or wheels, although a small boat for a wheel. Also the coachroof was extended in later models to increase interior volume and included an additional set of bronze port lights (5 on each side) and another overhead hatch. The toerail cap is also teak in later models.. I do wonder if that's an aftermarket cap on this boat that may have been replaced.
There's a lot to like there, and a lot to be skeptical about. The impact to the bow sprit is concerning and the freeze/thaw on the mount is not going to be good once it's taken apart. Even if the owner would take $12-15K it would need the same amount in repairs to get it right again and sea worthy. Still not bad, but a project all the same.
It is great looking boat. Set by my house and clean it and replace the bow sprit and look at the compression post. I live in central Washington state. Would need a trail to transport it. It may be heavy for my 1 ton Dodge diesel.
Some hot water and buffing and she would look great. Replace and repair the boomkin then check the condition of the sails and you off and running. Then next winter replace the cushions and your golden.
Was very nice to see this review. There was a PS 27 Orion that I was considering (which I did not get a chance to look at) before I bought my Westsail 32. I often wondered if I should have looked at that boat before it was under contract. This video makes me understand that the v-berth would not have been big enough for us and that I got a good price on my W32. Also good to see a demo of a composting toilet as I always wondered about them. Captain Q, would be good to hear your thoughts on the W32 if you ever looked at one.
Always thought the Westsail32 was the boat for me. Well built dependable extremely safe cruiser. Looked at one and before I pulled the trigger someone else bought it. Regretted that ever since.
The Pacific SeaCraft Orion is an ideal small cruising boat for a couple for off shore or shorter passages. If it had not been sold, I would ready to make a bid .Best wishes to the new owner. Captain, I would like to see your review more smaller cruising yachts like this one.
Loving the video and love PS yachts. I am 8:25 in and learned what Carvel planking is, as opposed to lapstrake. That will keep me from making a fool of myself at some point, so thanks for that! From what I read, the headroom is 6'2" in these. So I am guessing Captain Q is about 6'?
Very cool boat! Thanks for sharing. I'd love to know what Captain Q thinks of the Nor'Sea 27. I think the Pacific Seacraft Orion 27 is comparable to the Nor'Sea 27. The Orion 27 has carvel planking and the Nor'Sea 27 has lapstrake. Both are a cool look.
That stern design is easy to steer in a following sea . Laying down steer with your foot halfway dose off oh yes!!!! I'm skinny and agile, and love a quarter berth
I think I would want the Nimble 30 for layout below, but this is a no brainer - a decent Pacific Seacraft - at this price! You could pay that for a Flicka!
Love your stuff, Captain Q (and Ran Day). Thanks for bringing me joy and providing me guidance on my first large sailboat purchase. Any recommendations on a "bosun's chair" for my 3 dogs? Trying to avoid buying a newer boat with a scoop transom.
Nice little boat, but too small for us. I just put up the first video of our boat search. The second will be up on Monday. We are looking for a boat in the 38 to 45 foot range. Something like the Stevens 47 you did a video on is what we are looking for.
I am a so cal guy and almost owned a factory new Crealock 37 Circumnavigator. Right after I got out of the Army. Life got in the way and I had to forfeit my deposit. I never got over that. Having had the chance to really spend a ton of time with them in Newport Beach I got to see many other models, the Danas were where you see their magic in making a small boat big, and one Orion as they had just launched them earlier that year. Thank you for showing this little gem. Needs a good bit of work to "clean her up" but not a major endeavor and a very close look up in the bow and deck area foreword but one thing to remember if the issue is well above the water line it is rarely a deal breaker. She would be a great single hander off shore and a wonderful family boat for local and some distance cruising.
Charming boat! I do love the practical layout making it seem much larger than longer. I really are in awe that you two still producing videos in the frigid winter! I know it's hard but it's much appreciated. Keep 'em coming. Nice work Randay, great editing. One thing, perhaps we could see a few more shots of an Orion in action, either stills or video. Yawl the best. [see what i did there?]

Thank you. This layout certainly was a charmer and worked well. Greta little solo getaway boat no?
Another nice find Cap'n. Keep the good stuff coming.
This PSC 37 owner agrees: it's a 20. Great little boat.
Very unique. Love the layout. Good luck using paint thinner to remove paint.
Thanks for the look at this boat.
Love that sweater Capt’n Q , you gotta do a review of that classic...
Thumbs up and I haven't even watched yet - I won't be disappointed.
It is great looking boat. Set by my house and clean it and replace the bow sprit and look at the compression post. I live in central Washington state. Would need a trail to transport it. It may be heavy for my 1 ton Dodge diesel.
Captain Q dropping bombs
The Malls and the Hauls , At least you have a Buddy 💓
Really enjoy your videos. Glenn from Darwin N.T. Australia. You make sailing look see easy cheers
Some hot water and buffing and she would look great. Replace and repair the boomkin then check the condition of the sails and you off and running.
Then next winter replace the cushions and your golden.
Love that late 70's upholstery
I always loved that boat, Orion 27.
Our family was the original owner of Orion #6, same color scheme - great little boat.
Very cool!
The Pacific SeaCraft Orion is an ideal small cruising boat for a couple for off shore or shorter passages. If it had not been sold, I would ready to make a bid .Best wishes to the new owner. Captain, I would like to see your review more smaller cruising yachts like this one.
Thursday 3 pm. 🤗
the interior is really clever for a 27 foot.
the best!
Good question!
I'm glad someone has given her a home. Maybe you should do an update on the ones that sold and if their back in the water?
Funny you should say that today… Standby
That stern design is easy to steer in a following sea . Laying down steer with your foot halfway dose off oh yes!!!! I'm skinny and agile, and love a quarter berth
Pretty nice Sailboat Absolutely i like it's
Hey Randy, watch out for the gopher holes.
“Check this out. Do we like this? Do we like our Dinty Moore stew? Ah, no, not at all, but I could eat it.” “;))) 😊
Love it. Another great video; thanks gents.
another great episode, keep it up guys
Yeah nice boat Capt hemmingway , I love full keels , Can you replace the glass in the port light , Or has the whole Port light got to be replaced ?
That's a boat I wouldn't of given a second look from a far but wow I'm really impressed! Very Cool!👍
I really liked the elk at 1:31
Very Well-dressed, eh?
Very interesting! Keep up the good work.
Thanks!
Great job captain
