You may be able to replace the lights in the pit with LED lights. You'll get more light without the excess heat. Thanks for the video! I'd like to build an inspection pit in my garage on day.
Fantastic job. I regret not doing a pit when i was building my garage 10 years ago, now you have encouraged me . I am the exact same height as you as well !
Great vid bro. Have four cars and do all my own work on them. You've definitely given me some inspiration to get moving on a pit. Been promising to make one for a long time. Not enough space for a lift and too old... oops I mean too wise to be laying on the wet ground outdoors.
Because of my love of working on automobiles, but being an American who was brought up using the imperial system of measurement, pretty much everything after the largest (typical) axle nut sizes, 38 mm, I start to go dumb dumb. And if you start saying centimeter, I become even more dumb. 🤣 My edit : I’m sorry my friend, I completely forgot to comment on your garage pit…It is absolutely awesome !! Anyone who works on their own vehicles would love to have one of those in their own garage ! Great job !!
[thank, you for you're video. this is what I always wanted to build . I, own a case Backhoe that I can dig it out and go from their. most of my friends told me that a pit is dangerous and is outlawed. but im. not going to be doing no welding or torch cuting. I'm. still going to build me a pit that way I don't have to lay down on the ground any more.]👍
About halfway though a house build, the 'Lancia' room has an inspection pit. Some good ideas in the comments, looking for something practical to cover it, I was thinking about a roller blind idea but if someone walks on it ...... wont be good. Also trying to work out ways to move the car without driving it to gain better access.
Really nice job, it’s my next (and last!) big project on my gaff, and what you’ve done is exactly what I have in mind… nice one! Cheers for the help, I think I’ll take the same approach 😊✌️
I'm building one in our new double garage. I prefer to use an angle iron frame around the edge so that the load bearing down on the ends of the timber cover is actually on the walls rather than a lip sticking out, plus one less thing to smack your head on or funny bone when working under the car.
Is it possible to dig up the whole floor area inside the garage? If possible what supports would I need? I’m guessing it can’t be good for weight distribution on the walls, I would make it a room under the floor with a concrete ceiling, abit like a cellar.
Getting ready to close on a house the 2nd of next month. I really want to add an inspection out to the shop rather than remove the spare clean storage attic so I can fit a lift. I really like what you did but honestly would like to make it a bit wider with adjustable width metal pieces that lock onto/ into the front and to give me a bit wider area so I can stick some tools down there and have the width to do crap Like CV axles on my off road rig with plenty of space. I was also thinking about doing the stairs in the back but I honestly like them where you put them so you can if you need step up on them. So many hard decisions on the design. I really like yours and may just copy it 1-1 since it will be easy enough cheap enough and less work.
@@aaanton11 yea. Thats what im concerns about the roof clearance. We looking to make a building the workshop will be on the basement. We put in 10feets tall which is basic jet lift height is. But architect is having problem with getting the roof too high as it mean that we have to dig deeper and the entrance slope will be higher and slidding more downwards.
My neighbor when he was building his house and garage connected to the house, put in a pit, but it kept filling with water year after year, he hire a contractor, they didn't do it right, finally they just filled it in after spending thousands trying to waterproof it
Brilliant my dads got a pit also built himself , also always had BMW’s haha great for changing those control arms every other year on our shit English roads , great video ! Wish his had a socket and lights! May have to add that 😃😃
OUtstanding job, just gotta make sure ya keep it thoroughly covered up when this Insurance inspector comes around if he asks to see the garage...........
Update. started on 'fitting out' the pit, it was intentionally too deep so I can store a set of winter tyres and some tools in a fake floor. Noticed a massive mistake though, its too wide, the inner edge of the car tyres will only just clear the opening. Stupid mistake, I'm going to blame the builders but I know its my fault.
Good man. I'm starting mine next week and was looking some motivation and inspiration. I was going real basic but after seeing what you have done I think I will put a bit more effort into it. Pit Jack is a nice touch. BTW your boards support a car being driven over?
Thinking about building a garage with a pit, but I'm wondering if I will have to put the water drainage outside of the garage as deep as the pit will be maybe to avoid have it filled with water.. That would mean quite a bit of extra work.
Funnily enough, when I went to build my inspection pit, I had no end of people who told me to make sure the water table was well below the bottom of the pit or the pressure of water will lift your concrete basin right out of the garage floor like a champagne cork! I failed to see how that would work, especially if you’ve got it tied into the floor with reo bar? Some went on to cite even the Titanic saying, hark at the size and weight of it, and the ocean kept that aloft without difficulty! Fortunately for me, however the water table was well below the floor of the pit, even allowing me to put a Maori drain in it for when I slash a radiator. It’s worked a treat over the years.
Here is the test video of the lower half. It's on the boat now and made it out before they locked down Shandong. ruclips.net/video/muwvC5IoZDk/видео.html
Fair point, although most issues were around people welding and cutting with oxy acetylene, producing high amounts of carbon monoxide, I am far away from that, but if you were concerned a sensor can be fitted inside the pit, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Thanks for doing the video, I commented about this on one of your other vid's, great project 👍, bet it's paid for itself many times over.

Nothing, they’re solid, thanks for the great comments 👍🏻👍🏻🛠
I want to do this in my garage in Palm Springs CA
I would love to come and see it!! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
are there any disadvantage for using car pit vs using a jet lift? theres a budget but i dont see needs for jet lift.
Its all about the size of your garage, a lift is always better but you need roof clearance, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
