Tarptent Notch Tent Review - It's Half Good, Half Bad...

- Here is my review of the Tarptent Notch which is a one person, trekking pole tent. It's perfect for ultralight backpacking as it's so easy to setup. I have used this about 7 nights so far and find it's got some very good points and some very bad points. Despite being half good and half bad I would still recommend this tent as being a lightweight and easy to set up shelter.

Excuse my sniffy hay fever in this video 😅
That's exactly what I did with mine. Put two extra guy points on each corner, plus the bungy cords on the fly hem. I also added an extra guy at the point of the pitchlok so there's four pegs at each end. Pretty solid now pointed into 30 mph winds.
Yeah it should be good now 👍
Blow that for a lark. I bought a cheap tent, a Eurohike Backpacker Dlx 2 and people sniggered, they can snigger all they want, it's a great tent - not for your ultra lightweight club but does the job in all 4 seasons having been in two storms with winds of 40mph-50mph and been solid. I think there's far too much snobbery around gear and I extend my middle digit in that direction, if it works it works whatever name or price tag it has. Good videos.
I'm not an ultralighter, my last tent I bought was 2.8kg. Just used this on the west highland way though and it's been very good to be fair 👍
Import charges are a nightmare. I have my eye on the Durston XP MID as it seems to be the ultimate trekking pole tent and according to others can really handle bad weather well.
Have a look at the Sierra Designs High Route 300 bud looks very similar to me and it's a way of getting around the imports
Great review Adam
Cheers mate
Well detailer video. I have the Dyneema version, the Notch Li. Henry Shires offers a "pole handle cup" if you want to use your poles point down to keep the handles out of the dirt. I use them on my Notch Li.
I have a similar Tarptent Moment DW That I use for winter with the optional Crossing Pole shortened 5" and run UNDER the fly for high winds and snow load.
It would feel a bit safer with the spikes pointing downwards I think!
My poles always have rubber tip caps so they don't sink far into soft ground. But here in the American west most ground is rocky or fairly hard. BTW I dyed my inner "solid" tent with green RIT DYEMORE synthetic dye for shade and privacy.@@MrWildWales
Allo geeza greetings from the Wye valley .
Alright mate is it as soggy there too today 😬
Wow for a premium tent paying extra for sealing you would of thought they'd have done a better job at it, drives me mad it's all about weight but they're cutting out the most important things, guidelines, pegs plus I think the fly is way too thin n see through lol. You are a Legend. 🤘🤘🏴🏴🏴
Bit of a pain those things about it. I still do like it though! Thanks bud
If you were to use a stick I'd use some protection on it. Maybe half a tennis ball?
Good stuff mate, I’m looking for something like that but all ready sealed up preferably ,most of them are just so over priced .👍🍻
That's the problem the lightest weight ones don't tend to be sealed 😖
Nice review Adam, might have just put me off buying it. You need to get Drufus to review his! Had fun putting up the knot gear last night, it's massive for the weight! I'm going to enjoy getting out on a camp with it soon! 😁
Aye you've got a similar one already now haha! Look forward to seeing it out and about 👍
how tall are you geezer. Cause i just dont know. I think id have more space in a lanshan 1 pro
I'm 6 foot. I tend to get more sitting space in this one than the lanshan
@@MrWildWales cheers.
How do you think it compares to the pretents soloist ?
Ha funny you should say that! We went to Snowdonia for the week and that's what my mate took. Check the vid on my channel
I agree I've got 2 tents from the states and the import duties and shipping fees don't half sting.ive got my eye on a ugq quilt but keep trying to talk myself out of it lol
We need to do a deal I think! It's way cheaper getting stuff from China
@@MrWildWales it would be great if we did I got stung last year with duties from Poland so it's not just the states the duties just take the shine off the gear and the value for money is hard to swallow
Still to watch the Snowdonia trip but I'm convinced about the tent... It's not one I'd buy 🤣
Fair enough bud 😊👍
Watch Erik Normark, he use this tent in all weater ice, rain etc. and no problem whit the tent, me eiter, but nice rew.
Sweet bruv I will! I think now that it's got 8 more peg out points it could stand up to the Welsh weather!
Not sure about the tent but panels 2/3 need a bit of stain 😊 ☮️
A different colour?
Na just the ones without any stain on - could always do bright yellow 😂
Very poor to pay that much and other not be right. I don't understand why we pay so much in the uk. Bit like Thermarest that are made in Ireland yet are cheaper in the states than the uk. Doesn't make sense.
Yeah it's pretty daft I think seeing as we can get some bargains from China
@@MrWildWales absolutely and often with no shipping or taxes.
Just received the Notch in Norway. Paid as much in tax as you did in UK.
@@MrWildWales What you said is "not buying cheap goods from China", but these brands must be sold at high prices in the United States. You also know that many tent brands are made in China. I know too much about this. It's just that the boss of 3fulgear is Chinese. The exchange rate difference makes their products half the price of other brands and they can get a good profit. But for these American brand owners, the price must be high to make a profit. Exchange rate ratio! ! ! !
Do you prefer this to the lanshan 1 mate?
Yeah because it gives me more headroom sitting up 👍
@@MrWildWales nice one. Is that because of the two poles and not the actual height? You reckon there's more room overall in the Notch?
Yeah it's a wider area you can sit up and move in. I found you had to sit dead centre in the lanshan and even then there was a pole in your face
That sounds spot on. I had a gossamer gear that was single man with 2 poles and there's loads of room. Only issue was it's really delicate. Could be what I'm after
ok..from what i see lanshan is a better tent..unless it s a dcf..
Well put it this way I don't think it's worth paying triple the price to upgrade from a lanshan to this
Not all bad then dude
Not too bad 👍
Not a tent I would buy at that price for shipping.
Hey i thought u r Crazy Russian hacker 🧐🤨
