Just a tip from a hoary old ultralighter - if your shelter is getting overwhelmed you always have the option to collapse it around you and survive the night wrapped up burrito-style. Maintain a bit of airflow and you won't get too drenched in condensation. You'll survive, the shelter will be undamaged and you might even get some sleep. Those winds were extreme and even black-label Hillies would have been touch and go. So the Notch did pretty well.
Thanks for a good video on this clever tent design.I have the NOTCHLi (Dyneema) and like it. ->FYI: Tarptent sells an optional "pole handle pocket" to attach to the inside peak of their hiking pole supported tents. With it you place your pole handle UP into the pocket and OUT OF THE DIRT. I have small rubber tips on my CF hiking poles and this keeps them from sinking into the soil. Like your "porch floor". I use one as well. Keeps the tent clean inside.
What a hellish windy camp. We're very familiar with those winds last September in Snodonia. Our brand new campsite tent 6 berth was just pummelled by the wind night after night. It didn't hold up well and tore in places that should have held up. The great company took it back for repair but gladly sent us a new replacement. Yet to test it, but we telt that it having a fully sewn in ground sheet, the wind couldn't get through enough. Next time well try having all vents open. We never had that trouble with our other new Vango. The strapping in all theirs is brilliant in storms and wind. Thank you and dont give up. It takes a long time to build a channel .
Wow amazing. When it’s windy it’s proper windy up on that hill. It’s always good to take a bit of time to enjoy your own adventures without filming them I think, but great to see you back out and what a return. Massive respect to you. Take care and keep enjoying those adventures of yours 🤩
Well that held up well. Impressive wind speeds and it didn't tear, excellent. Well done for riding that one out. Not fun at the time but makes for a great video, subbed. Happy camping A
Tents designed for it, upper end but it did its job well. Recently got a Stratosphire 1, I now own 3 Tarptents 🤣. I use my mossie head net instead of a t-shirt but exactly the same principle, works a treat. Cracking video 😁👌
That was a class video mate, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s amazing how wrong the forecast can be. That wind looked brutal. Off to do a wild camp in the Peaks on the 30th (weather permitting 🤞) Looking forward to bumping into you again sometime soon hopefully. All the best 👍
Well done Steve. Good to see you back out again. Picture was nice and clear and sharp. No Para gliders up there. One landed right in front of me , last time I was up there. 😄
Great movie. I have had one for a year now but couldn't swap my HB Soulo. This made me confident. I will bring it to the swedish mountains next year. Thanks for this great test video.
I was back home visiting family couple of weeks back, beginning of Oct. I managed to get out on the Thursday & Friday night. I went up Langlee Crags on the Thursday, 65mph gusts, was absolutely radge man. It was the 1st time I'd used my Telemark 2.2 in anger and Delta anchors (which saved the night). I never really understood how people could be blown off mountains..... Well I do now, If it wasn't for my poles I reckon I would've been blown to Lindisfarne. Friday I was up Great Hetha, same craic so had to drop down the back a little bit. One bonus, there was naebody else out, naebody radge enough I suppose. The Cheviots can be a frightening place when the weather comes in, that's for sure....... But was a couple of brilliant nights.
thats the beauty of the Cheviots never seen anybody. its lush especially now it can be very atmospheric. glad you managed to get out when you were back and put the delta pegs to good use. had mine 3 years never used them...take care
Hey great video and very well filmed. Great audio quality too. Awesome to see someone else properly testing tents and measuring that wind speed.. Its a tough one and really hard to film under winds like that. RUclips is not easy and its hard to know what your audience wants based on my own experience. I have issues with it as on many occasions I have made a massive effort on some of my videos and had poor views. Other videos have done well and I do not know why.... But I enjoyed this one very well done... ATB Tom
Thanks Tom, very kinds words. Its a learning curve to try and get the best footage/audio possible. I'm working hard to make sure i enjoy it and hopefully in turn any one who tunes in! Thanks again.
Well that was an interesting night mate , not even a T shirt over the pillow was gonna give you a decent nights Kip 😂 just had to ride it out and escape sharpish . Tent held well no damage I hope . I know what you mean about the filming , I used to feel I needed to go out just to film ! Now I go when I feel like I want to do a camp and just film it my way. Tfs atb Dave ⛺️👍
yeah exactly that Dave, im serving my own purpose not the other way around. Honestly the tshirt job worked a treat keeps my hands warm to so thank you! cheers for watching.
Good video. What I tend to think is - if camping above treeline basically take tested and proven tent, in your case Hilleberg. 30mph wind forecasted and ends up with 66mph gusts, crazy. I watched quite few camping videos and so many times weather forecast is wrong. People struggle or bail out. I just wonder which is more wind resistant Unna with 10mil poles or Akto with original 9mm poles. Thank you
Whoah, that wind was savage! I wonder if the tent did so well because it doesnt have a curved pole design that could squash and snap? Interesting what you're saying about filming detracting from the experience- I'm starting to feel a bit of that myself.
Horrendous! Always massively windy every time I've been up there. Kudos 👌. I tried narrating on my RUclips vids but it was a chew on and didn't enjoy it so stick to photos and vid. Great vid from you as always
This is why I have a 2p Hilleberg Allak with 10mm poles and a Soulo with 10mm poles. I want to be sure that I won't get in trouble in the arctic. I'm ok with carrying the extra kg's.
Very few other hiking pole-supported tents, if any, could have done as well in that wind as the NOTCH, either silnylon or the DCF Li. I have the DCF Li model for SUL backpacking. Your stakes and guy lines were well done, hence the tent withstood the winds. TIP: Use circles of Tenacious Tape sandwiched over the edges of your fly as reinforcement to sew on 4 light nylon tape stake loops. Then girth hitch heavy women's elastic hair bands to them. Staking out the fly like this will greatly reduce flapping and wear on the fly in high winds. YET ANOTHER TIP;o)-> I got the optional "pole handle adaptors" for each peak so I could put my pole handles UP. I hate handles in the mud. My poles use small rubber end tips, the kind with a tungsten center for durability. These tips will not fit in tehpeak grommets and, as stated, don't want my handles in the mud so the handle adaptors were a must for me.
looked a canny night until the wind hit mate but i have to say for a lightweight shelter it performed very well so that will boost ya confidence in it no end. how's the panasonic doing? you enjoying it? Anyways thanks for sharing ATB Steve
absolutely mate, really enjoying this shelter and confident it can handle some disgusting weather. really enjoying the camera lots to learn but having fun! cheers for watching mate
At last - someone who measures the real windspeed before making headline claims. A genuine 66mph is serious stuff and it's a great endorsement of the Notch and your pitching skills. This'll probably tip me into getting one.
That was brutal!! A seriously good test of that tent - I'm impressed. Forecasts can be so far off sometimes can't they? If we didn't have SOME faith in them though, we'd end up taking super heavy tents on every camp! Well done for sticking this camp out 👍 James.
Yeah Craig the winds were strong. The apex that I pitched into the winds is the strongest point on the tent. Cant imagine the chaos that could have happened if pitched the other way 😂 cheers for watching
Holy s**t! I'm not sure whether to say congratulations or commiserations 😂 Maybe the "battle prep" coffee was a sign of things to come 😭 That little notch hung on so well though. Incredible for 900g tbh! Stay safe and well mate, Adge
Loved the music that you floated under the wind scenes. At the end of the day, you stayed dry and even with a broken pole you stuck it out. I don't get it when guys bug out in the middle of the night, putting themselves at risk. You're better off sitting it out. After all the night is not that long. Yes, you should've taken the Hilleberg.
Just a tip from a hoary old ultralighter - if your shelter is getting overwhelmed you always have the option to collapse it around you and survive the night wrapped up burrito-style. Spot on mate appreciate it
or you could just pack up the tent and walk back home and sleep later, atleast find a place with less wind.
@@toroddlnning6806 Not always an option - if, say, you're in the middle of the Cairngorms or the Swedish tundra...
Looks so calm while setting up, shows how quickly the weather can change
Thanks for a good video on this clever tent design.I have the NOTCHLi (Dyneema) and like it.

thank you thats a really positive and inspiring comment. im glad your Tent got sorted and hopefully get to test it soon...
@The Geordie Wildcamper thank you. I feel loads better today so hiking soon again 😊
Wow amazing. When it’s windy it’s proper windy up on that hill.

Great vid - well done for making it through safely.
thanks Craig - cheers for tuning in
Really enjoyed the video and the explanation etc. loved it !
thank you really appreciate that!
Impressed that the tent stood up to that battering. Can’t really blame a failed walking pole on the tent.
Yeah i was impressed! was a cracking night and lots of fun..
Well that held up well. Impressive wind speeds and it didn't tear, excellent. Well done for riding that one out. Not fun at the time but makes for a great video, subbed. Happy camping A
thanks Andy, been a long time viewer of your channel. Very happy with its performance and really starting to rate the tent. Cheers for watching
The tent done you proud mate!
I love putting myself up against the elements. If that were me, I’d have earplugs in my kit and felt alive! 🙌🏻
It was a great adventure tbh! good test aswell...
Yep that was windy well done good tent that was only the pole that let you down
yeah exactly and i could have tightened them a bit more!

Yeah Chris, seen a few of your photos be interesting to see how it stacks up!
Great video! Good to see you back out 👍
thanks my man!
Loving these opening scenes so far 😍
trying to give it a bit more production value and create a story...we need to team up and get a camp together i reckon...cheers
@@thegeordiewildcamper Yeah it looked really classy 👌 It'd be good to meet up for a camp, though there must be 350 miles or so between us! One day 👍

crazy forecast my friend, ive had some truly awful weather of late...no doubt we will and get a camp in. take care

cheers Mark my man!
I'm amazed you were standing up in 66mph winds that would blow any mortal man over so they crawling on the ground. Well done ...
Cheers Tony don’t you know I’m resistant to wind? They were gusts my friend not constants. 66 was the highest reading. Cheers for watching …

Had the exact same thing in an akto (Pyrenees close to the peak), it just get loud in a tent.
Haha yeah I was well impressed although very sleep deprived 🤣
That looked breezy. I hope nothing blew away.
hahaha no nothing blew away apart from my dignity trying to get the tent down
Great vid mate , tent did well standing up to that wind mind , nice one , atb Deka 👍🏻🏕😎

one of those things - cannot prepare for every eventuality but does make for an exciting trip! cheers for watching
Some seriously strong winds there but would it have been better pitching with the low end into the wind rather than pitching for the views
