What an amazing piece of entertainment having in your van. Playing with your best mates definitely would fill my loneliness that I imagine has to be quite strong sometimes being all the time in different places. I've been thinking about van life for quite some time, the only thing I'm afraid of is solar power during winter since we do not get that much sun in winter here in Europe😀. I would use liquid cooling with a control valve to switch the heat exhaust inside during the winter and outside during the summer. Recycle your heat exhaust when you can.
To anyone claiming his build is "not efficient": Yes, a laptop will ultimately pull less power. But when talking about computers in this range, the components themselves will not be THAT much of a difference between laptop and desktop. The energy savings from going with a laptop is primarily from when adding the computer's consumption along with the consumption of the monitor. If he was willing to get rid of his big screen, then, and only then, will be notice the consumption difference. Since he was already using a separate monitor, there was not going to be much power usage difference between his new rig and a similarly specced laptop. And even if he finds consumption to be too high, a simple tone-down of graphics settings will get him where he needs to be. But if he has superb sunlight for an extended time, he now has the capability to crank graphics settings to the max, should he want to. The only real-world benefit of going with a laptop in his specific use case scenario is an even smaller footprint. But to get that footprint means he accepts not being able to change parts on the PC. It's not like he has a small van, so the small factor desktop suits him perfectly, with literally zero downsides, other than the monetary cost of the rig, which was likely funded in part, if not wholly, by the company he worked with. Anyway... ==================== L.M.F.A.O. You totally got me with that ending. ==================== A HUGE thank you for posting your specs. I am about a week away from hitting the road myself. I am also an MMO player and am looking at creating a power efficient build too. I just might copy your exact setup. Please PLEASE do another video as a "review" comparing your old rig to your new one, power consumption numbers included. And please compare frame rates with respect to power consumption. I.E., "this game gets me XX frames and uses XX watts to do it, and using my other rig on the exact same game gets me XX frames and uses XX watts to do it".
Turning down graphics settings doesn't automatically mean power consumption goes down, you would also have to limit the framerate because if you don't you might end up with more power consumption due to the CPU being pushed harder having a higher framerate. Also, when you talk about a "similarly specced" laptop I hope you aren't comparing a laptop 3070 to a desktop 3070 because there's a huge difference in power consumption there, so I'll assume you're talking about a higher end laptop GPU that performs closer to a desktop 3070 but I'm not exactly sure on the power consumption numbers there (I don't research laptops too much, but I know laptop components with the same name as desktop components do not perform the same and consume much less power)
Yeah, a lot of people don't realize that your hardware isn't pulling out full power all the time and will efficiently control its own clocks and power consumption. He can also control the power consumption of the graphics card even more by using MSI Afterburner and capping the power limit to something like 60%. An RTX 3070 should still be able to pump out plenty of performance at that power level. I cap my 3060ti to 70% a lot of the time and notice practically no difference while power consumption remains low.
This PC will be more powerful and efficient then any laptop, personally a big fan of the case too. He might save 10% power going with a laptop but he will probably lose %50 of his overall efficiency. Plus if he is in a location with shore power or move out of the van for some reason he can always dial his PC settings back up. I use both for work and gaming, both make sense for different reasons. In this case, that PC setup is definitely the right move.
And here i was thinking about getting a gaming laptop, when i can get a custom build pc instead. I hope they ship to Australia, as i would love the exact same build that you got. Kudos on such an amazing job you do with your videos, and i hope you are feeling well in life. 👍💯
Haha! I stumbled on this because I'm a gamer that's been considering the van life for a long time. I came here to look for ideas. This dude built pretty much the same rig I have at the same time I did. LOL!
Awesome video! I have a similar machine myself (3900x and 3080ti in an NR200). Its an excellent case. And for what its worth in most games I've never seen my system pull more than around 460 watts max load). A 3070 will use a lot less than that.
I have a 32 inch smart tv, sony 5.1 surroun sound, and a 35 watt gaming micro PC. A MinisForum UM700. If you live in a van and love computers then micro PC's cannot be beat!
which is kinda weird. As he's only gaming on this PC (he has his MAC Mini for work), a 5600X at its 65W base wouldve been a much better choice and uses much less power still.
same... its just a gaming PC, he couldve chosen more power efficient parts. 5600x (or now, the 5700x probably better) wouldve been better choice. Also AMD GPU and undervolt it. (Unless you can undervolt Nvidia also as effectively, I don't have much experience in that area)
Great Video! I'd highly recommend switching around the positions of the components through. Check out Gamers Nexus' video on how AIO placement affects the longevity of the AIO Pump. In this specific case (NR200) and Config (5950x and 3070) the 240mm rad is adequate for the cpu but it might run a little warm, a 280mm would be better for not much more in terms of price and power draw. The vertical mount for the GPU is nice and all but that space could have been used for a larger radiator, WITH PROPER positioning I might add. The gpu could have just been mounted regularly and and 2 slim fans where the AIO is currently at for maybe another $20 - $30. Nonetheless, good stuff! Just needs a little tweaking for longevity of the AIO and maybe squeezing out an extra 100 MHz out of that CPU since Ryzen really loves low temps and boosts higher the better it's cooled.
How do you make sure the computer doesnt fall off the desk when you drive the van? You're really living my dream dude, wish that was me. I'm so jealous! Thank you for doing this, and making us being a part of it..
Okay, love this! Thanks for putting this together. During the Outro you show clips of yourself playing Halo Infinite. Im going to assume you're playing Multiplayer online, as thats all that is available atm. When you're in a Match playing what sort of PING do you get while being off gird? Im sure its fine when at a friends, or on solid wifi, but can you actually game a Multiplayer FPS while being completely off grid?
wow, really thank you for this as being able to game has been a concern of mine when planning for van life. i'm planning around having my sim racing rig in the van so thanks for the inspiration
Awesome vid, loved the scenes with the music and walking through the store! Overall great build, I was confused at first that he chose a 5950x (the flagship consumer AMD CPU right now) but it does make sense as those are great binned CPU's (a good bin means less power required to achieve the same performance as say an OK bin) and gaming isn't going to be pushing it to the max. It's still probably an overkill CPU but hey I assume it was paid for by Microcenter so might as well haha. The 3070 is definitely what I would've chose at the most, a 3070 Ti or 3080 would push the power consumption significantly higher. I'm sure he went over some things you can do to reduce the power consumption but here's some tips anyway: - Setting a framerate limit, most games these days have an unlocked framerate (within reason at least, well over 100 FPS typically) so limiting it yourself can in some cases significantly reduce power consumption. My recommendation would be limiting your games to the refresh rate of your monitor, so for example if your monitor is 144Hz then limit your games to 144 FPS so you aren't consuming more power than really needed (having a higher framerate than your refresh rate does technically have some benefit but it's hardly noticeable and not something to worry about unless you're an e-sports pro lol). Alternatively if you want to have an extra long gaming session you could limit to 60 FPS, still very playable but could extend playtime quite a while depending on the game and graphics settings - Limiting the graphics settings, these days the difference between ultra settings and high settings is barely noticeable so it makes much more sense to play with slightly reduced settings rather than completely max out but when it comes to power consumption you have to keep that first tip in mind because reducing settings will increase your framerate and your power consumption could instead go up due to the CPU now working harder (higher framerates put more stress on the CPU), but if the framerate is limited and you reduce the graphics settings then power consumption can go down even further due to the GPU not pushing as hard for those higher settings And some things to try if you decide you're up for some learning and research: - Reducing voltage on the GPU and CPU, typically you can reduce voltage a little bit without issue and achieve a lower power consumption and lower temperatures in the process (all without losing performance, can actually slightly improve performance in some cases due to being allowed to boost higher because of the lower temps and/or that lower power consumption) - Underclocking, going further than reducing the voltage you can reduce the clocks as well as the voltage even further to get even lower power consumption but you do lose some performance here

This vid production needs a spotlight!!
Awesome video! I have a similar machine myself (3900x and 3080ti in an NR200). Its an excellent case. And for what its worth in most games I've never seen my system pull more than around 460 watts max load). A 3070 will use a lot less than that.
Love the kid in a candy store, nerd in a comp store reactions, needed a good chuckle today.
Your editing and production is GORGEOUS! And your van is breath-taking. I wish I wasn't such a hoarder bcuz you make me wanna buy a travel van lol
i had been waiting for this moment for over half of 2021!!!,amazing vid!!!
Not sure what I like the most:
The PC
The video production quality
The hair.....
I have a 32 inch smart tv, sony 5.1 surroun sound, and a 35 watt gaming micro PC. A MinisForum UM700. If you live in a van and love computers then micro PC's cannot be beat!
Kudos to the micro center guy! had me concerned throwing a 5950x into a system for power efficiency til the guy mentioned running it at 60W.
which is kinda weird. As he's only gaming on this PC (he has his MAC Mini for work), a 5600X at its 65W base wouldve been a much better choice and uses much less power still.
@@StefandeJong1 wish I knew about the pc builds for a van.
same... its just a gaming PC, he couldve chosen more power efficient parts. 5600x (or now, the 5700x probably better) wouldve been better choice. Also AMD GPU and undervolt it. (Unless you can undervolt Nvidia also as effectively, I don't have much experience in that area)
The "Showing up ro miceo center" intro, is all i needed to see. Great video.
@Giorgi Why not a 5600x? Single core peformance is the same across the board. No way you need more than 6 cores...
14:34 my heart skipped a beat watching that 😬 😂
How do you make sure the computer doesnt fall off the desk when you drive the van?
You're really living my dream dude, wish that was me. I'm so jealous! Thank you for doing this, and making us being a part of it..
I assume he'll screw it to the desk or something like that.
Thank you man. It's one of best video I've seen so far in your channel. It's rare one as well. It's the best.
I'm sure he went over some things you can do to reduce the power consumption but here's some tips anyway:
- Setting a framerate limit, most games these days have an unlocked framerate (within reason at least, well over 100 FPS typically) so limiting it yourself can in some cases significantly reduce power consumption. Alternatively if you want to have an extra long gaming session you could limit to 60 FPS, still very playable but could extend playtime quite a while depending on the game and graphics settings
- Limiting the graphics settings, these days the difference between ultra settings and high settings is barely noticeable so it makes much more sense to play with slightly reduced settings rather than completely max out but when it comes to power consumption you have to keep that first tip in mind because reducing settings will increase your framerate and your power consumption could instead go up due to the CPU now working harder (higher framerates put more stress on the CPU), but if the framerate is limited and you reduce the graphics settings then power consumption can go down even further due to the GPU not pushing as hard for those higher settings
And some things to try if you decide you're up for some learning and research:
- Reducing voltage on the GPU and CPU, typically you can reduce voltage a little bit without issue and achieve a lower power consumption and lower temperatures in the process (all without losing performance, can actually slightly improve performance in some cases due to being allowed to boost higher because of the lower temps and/or that lower power consumption)
- Underclocking, going further than reducing the voltage you can reduce the clocks as well as the voltage even further to get even lower power consumption but you do lose some performance here
This is absolutely the coolest PC building video I have ever seen! Love your content!
Good shit. Can't wait to see your gaming videos in the future! Halo Infinite is awesome.
Great video and congrats on the rig ma dude!
now we need to get linus on this and make this van fast as gigabite connection
you are raising the bar of edit and production videos. love this
"On the next episode, I am partnering up with Battle Born Batteries and we are going to double my usable power"
This is the absolute dream, vanlife + hardcore gaming!
"Efficient build", Me thinking about solid Ryzen 5 combo, proceeds with Ryzen 9
Personally Ryzen 3 or an i3 even would be fine
Lowkey the best option for power to performance ratio would have been a better laptop.
Ahem... threadripper...
Lucas was awesome! Microcenter is the best. Great build and lovely van.
Sure
Love your van build & sense of humor. Happy Holidays to you and yours.🌟
Lucas:“sure….sure….sure….yes and no….sure“ . love it^^

Sick build. Enjoy it man
Walking out of the Micro Center carrying your PC reminded me of the scene in "Office Space" when they took the troublesome printer out to pasture, lol. Superb content brother, subbed.
Love the Van. Still trying to build mine. 1995 Dodge B2500 3/4 ton.
the fact that you built it vs buying a pre built computer and just powering it is amazing and insightful!
Plus Super mad respect for the people that made that computer!!!
Absolutely AWESOME!!!! 🙌🏻 I’m still deciding on getting a tow behind camper trailer or getting a camper van! I game everyday and this PC set up is 👍🏻!
Welcome to the Mini-ITX Community brother! Subbed!
I was getting tv show/ movie vibes from this editing. Quality content 👍👍
This is going to be the longest comment I have ever done so bear with me the videography and the amount of work you put into your videos are unbelievable I don't know how you do it but you're very good at it and my opinion and just my opinion your way under paid and under appreciated for the amount of work that you do they're very well thought out the videos are just next level dude I couldn't imagine anyone being any better at these videos than what you're doing and I am an inspiring gamer I don't get the game as much as I'd like because I'm a nomad and I live out of a pickup truck and a tent but these are informative videos and funny videos I just can't say enough about your ability as a videographer I wish that I could do half as good of a video as you do keep up the good work I hope this inspires you to keep going strong and long and don't let the negativity get you down Life is too short to dwell on negativity I wish the best for you I hope extremely hope that someone in the industry sees the work that you've put in and gives you a big old check and I know it's not about the money it's about the quality and the appreciation the people give you on your videos but if anyone deserves compensation for their videos it would be you sir
