Michael and Jackie, I drove tractor-trailers for a few years. I always used a fuel additive to prevent algae from growing in the tanks and to prevent waxing the fuel in the winters. Only once did I wax up my filters and that was when it was -50 F below zero. Where I purchased my fuel bragged that they didn't sell additives because they mix their diesel fuel with kerosene and they claimed that it didn't wax up. Many miles down the highway, in the middle of nowhere northern Pennsylvania, my filters waxed up. I was hauling a J.I.T. (Just In Time) load for the automobile manufacturing industry. My engine stopped and I was stranded on a highway with no traffic and no lights of homes anywhere for HOURS. Needles to say my trucking career ended a short time later because of this missed delivery. Post Script: If my dog, Thunderbutt, hadn't been with me I would have frozen to death. (Yes, that was the name of my dog.)
Wow what a great story, didn't know what about kerosene, not sure if they do that over here??? Does anyone know??? So pleased you added that that was the name of your dog...... Love your comments. xx
In West Australia I always leave my tank in the ute full as I don’t drive it all the time If I forget I poor a bottle of additive in you can buy it by the bottle at most car parts shops

I applaud how diligent Brits are about recycling. Where I live, we know it's a waste of time as the recycling generally ends up wherever the trash is dumped.
I think because we get use to doing it all the time it's strange for us not to. Suppose we can all do our little bit for the planet. Why doesn't yours get recycled? Where about are you? x
I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Before I moved to my current location, I was the president of a condo association. I had asked our township about what they did with the recycling and they basically said it cost too much money so it too ended up in the regular dump. I reported the truck who took our recycling because it had no cover over the top of the truck and the plastic flew out and littered our country roads. I live in another area around Philadelphia and the manager of the building I live in said there was no recycling even though the building pays for its pickup. I had head years ago that NYC stopped recycling, but I cannot confirm that. You do have a wonderful channel and I do enjoy you and Michael. Jane, Philaelphia@@cruisingontheborder

Wow, thanks for that comment, I have just been answering another comment that had asked the same question and didn't know the answer. Now I do. Very informative thank you. Hope you are enjoying our little waterways adventures.
Yes I work has a diesel fitter reconditioning commercial engines and our local fuel injection company gave me that info leaving the fuel stagnant doesn’t help
Oww yeah chip butty with loads of butter 😋 great video guys thank you. We just bought a 55ft cruiser stern from swanley brokerage, we should be on the cut by February once our house sale has gone through and completed. We are both so excited and our dogs will also love the freedom 🙂

No need to remove your diesel fuel. Make a fuel polisher with an electric fuel pump and a good filter. Suck from the bottom of the tank (piece of rigid copper tubing) push it through the filter, and return hose into fill opening. You set it up, and let it run until the filter stays clean, often a day or two. It is easy to do as a prevention, more complicated after things are all gummed up. Happy sailing!
Judith, wow thank you so much for that information, we have seen a number of the designs on top of post boxes too, didn't realise that's what they were. Love the comment x
Michael and Jackie, I have noticed, many times, trash blowing out of trash trucks driving on the main roads. So it isn't always knuckle-heads throwing trash down on the ground. Someone, somewhere, will re-design trash trucks to prevent this unintentional littering .

Hi you both xx great to hear from you and I'll pass our congratulations onto the Captain. Yes there are so many lock issues and canal closures, it is a continual issue. Can't tell you the number of times we have had to re work out our route!!! Keep well and stay safe xx
That was a really interesting canal trip but hard work with all the locks and the strong wind. It must have been good to have your visitors and the beautiful Vizlas, they were sniffing everything, my Cousin has Vizlas and they go hunting, they take them on very long walks too. Looking forward to your next video 😊😊😊
Hi Fiona 💕 so lovely to hear from you. So pleased you enjoyed, yes often the locks are tough but we enjoy the physical exercise too. Cute your cousin has Vizlas too. See you next week x
Hi Diesel bug is more prominent in red diesel as it contains no chemostatic additives! Best thing to do is every time you fill up get a stick & stir the tank several times, I have done this many times & only managed to break down 4 times this year!
We lived and cruised aboard for 20 years and never got diesel bug, like you we used an addative, tried to keep the tanks full when possible. What allows the bug to thrive is condensation on the cold metal of the tank and runs down into the fuel where it allows cthe bug to thrive
Boat life is great, we agree with you. It's often a mental and physical challenge but one that keeps you young, fit and agile. Great to hear from you x
Polishing the fuel…not the tanks!! And the ‘bug’ can block the tubes before the filter. We suffered engine failure but there was nothing in the filter. We are a sailing vessel and had to ask the RNLI for assistance…..on investigation in a safe haven we discovered the fuel pipes blocked right before the first filter….hubby has a diesel engine background but this took him by surprise despite all the usual maintenance.
Hi Fiona… we know 😳😳 we realised the error when we put the video together…. Ooops! You were so lucky the RLNI could assist. They do the most amazing job 👌👌. Thanks for your great comment x
😂😂 Michael loves that… I’ll never hear the last of it. Thanks so much for your lovely comment we really appreciate you taking the time to message us 💕💕

We’re good thanks, just got back home to the USA. We also spotted our moored boat in another of your videos a few weeks ago when you went through Rugeley 😁 Hope you’re both OK and keeping warm. 🧤🧦😉
I worked for a customer who managed a recycling centre. He told me they put the majority of it into landfill as too expensive to recycle it all. So don't lose sleep about it. We can only do our bit

Really enjoying your video diaries from here in sunny New Zealand. The weather still looks warm there too, but i guess you filmed some time ago. Cant wait for the Anderton Boat Lift video, I worked on it's refurbishment project many years ago.
Oh wow that is incredible to know that Peter! Bet you have so many stories to tell, we should have popped over to see you and done an interview with you on it. We have done a little bit on the boat lift as we went through it on nb Amadeus III our previous boat. It's an incredible piece on engineering. Keep watching for next weeks!! Thanks for dropping us a comment, best wishes to NZ. Where about are you in NZ?? x
@@cruisingontheborder Northland, a couple of hours north of Auckland. Used to live on the Calder n Hebble so met many narrow boaters in our local pub. Had a yacht on the North Sea so your comment about the waves on the canal made me smile.
We did Heartbreak Hill at the very end of September and found that many of the locks were out of action, but hardly met anyone anyway. As for recycling, on land I religiously washed and sorted everything. Now, I’ve given up, it’s hard to find a recycling point.
Well done doing Heartbreak Hill, how was it. We enjoy doing locks as you get to meet so many lovely people and spend time with the doing the flights. Ah don't get us started on the old recycling issue. A nightmare. Hope you're still enjoying your cruising. xx
I was wondering if a “pram hood” would be useful. I say this while realizing that some/many bridge clearances are on the “low side”. Would also be practical in certain mooring weather as well. A “convertible” pram hood would be the best if they exist. Anyway… liked this weeks wind filled - rain soaked episode. Not to worry Jacqui …you still managed to look fetching as you were wringing out your hat. 😂😂 Hugs and kisses from 🇨🇦
Hi, great comment and question. Yes a pram cover would be a great idea, however many bridges, as you have seen, are very very low. It would be a real pain taking it up and down all the time. We saw one that was very flexible but just a top no sides. Thanks for your kind comment, it really wasn't my best look.... haha. Hugs back to Canada.xx
Jackie ! You going on about chip buttys,I thought 'ooh I fancy one of them for my tea now', so I did ! only for you to go for the healthy option 😂. I wish I had your willpower 😂 xx
I think some private refuge collectors like biffa sort recycling at there depot. But the cleansing department in Bath have street public recycling bins that all go in the bin lorry and gets sent to landfill because management haven’t bothered to sort anything out. Council in Bath that is.
We do notice it's different all around the country, this was one of those good examples. Normally we struggle to recycle which upsets us both!! Thanks for your great comment.
Hi Stuart thanks for the comment. We film every day virtually, the days we don't move the boat a little less so. But it's a journey for us that we wanted to record and we are certainly doing that. This latest video we had over 2 1/2hrs of footage to edit to get the 40 minute video... sometimes we forget what has happened so it's a surprise to us when we edit. I do log our travels each day and have an overview of the journey.... but still I surprise myself on things we both say. It's all very organic and we just say it as it happens. No direction goes into the recording. Hope that helps you understand how we do it... xx
Hi Guys As an avid follower of your adventures I notice that sometimes when you are in t shirts and shorts I have the heating on at home! Are the vids recorded some time before we actually see them. Keep up the good work. 😊
@55jiggy yes they are as we record footage every day we move and it’s important to show our journey in full. We hope you like the fact we are showing sunny weather ☀️ when it’s howling a gale 💨 outside. X
Hi Gavin thanks for the question 🙋♀️ we’ve been to Wales with BR… two years ago before we started to video our adventures, love it… 👍👍👍. Hope you’re enjoying our adventures in 🏴 x
Wow we didn't know that, but you can tell when you pick them there are lots of different forms and sizes. Great health food, the darker the colour the better!!. Thanks for your comment Iain. x
Good day Both Excuse my ignorance in this matter, & being a bit late, "Diesel Bug" Do you use a special brand of Diesel as i have not heard this happening to cars?
Good day to you to. Thanks for dropping us a comment, lovely to hear from you. Diesel bug is mainly associated with red diesel which is a different type of diesel to the one that cars use. Not as sophisticated hence why bugs grow... some of the other comments we have received on this video explain it in better detail than I can. Jac x
‘Diesel bug’ comes from the higher amount of bio fuel added to regular diesel in recent years. Diesel is naturally hygroscopic and is made even more so because bio fuel is made from grain.
Gosh now that is a good question, we nearly bought a boat called Rivendell before BORDER REIVER. There are so many unique and interesting boat names it's difficult to remember them all. Keep watching the videos and let us know when we pass one and you like it's name. We'll keep our eye out and let you know. x
We are engaging a hire boat next May and eagerly devour all of your videos. Because of your videos, we have already ordered walkie-talkies. Thanks. (If you are from the States, please be aware that walkie-talkie frequencies are different in the UK from the US. Does anyone know if my US walkie talkies will function in the UK?)
Wow, where have you hired your boat from and what canals are you going to travel on.... you'll have such the best time!!! Not sure if they are different frequencies, maybe someone will know and drop you a message on here. Have a safe trip when you come over x
Heading south on the Shropshire Union from Nantwich to Brewood. Going the opposite trip you took in episodes 44-47 which I have now watched half a dozen times. I have all sorts of written notes on bridges and landmarks taken from your Vlog. Now I'm watching your videos mostly to study your vocabulary.
@scotthanson4449 Scott it’s wonderful to know you’re enjoying the videos so much. We hope our vocabulary stands up to your scrutiny 🧐 let us know if we make any errors 😁😁. Great comment 💕💕
No. no, I think you have misinterpreted my comment. I am not judging or grading your vocabulary. I am studying it. As you know from your years in Texas, we use different words, idioms and colloquialisms in the States. Take "hire boat" for instance. We would say rental boat. I am trying to learn to speak/understand "Brit" and having the pleasure of enjoying some very fine videos in the process.
@scotthanson4449 hi Scott no we did realise that… hope you find some of our phrases easy to understand… particularly northern and Yorkshire phrases. Do you know the difference between an alley way, a snicket and a ginnel??? Or the other ones are bap, roll, barm cake, growler??? Let us know if you find out… 😀😀 💕
There are many places where wide beam boats just don't fit. According to the CRT maps, wide beam boats can travel the north and the south but there is no wide canal connecting the two areas. They would have to exit at the coast, transit open water and duck back in.
Yes Pat it would, we can get a little one in the bow of the boat and that helps with drying things. Not great to have wet clothes in a boat. It's important to keep the air flowing but as we are both fresh air freaks that isn't an issue. Thanks for your comment.
The ONLY way to deal with this is to completely empty and clean all fuel tanks and systems, and I mean empty, steam and purge as much as you can, then completely fill with new fuel and additive. If you take fuel from a sole supplier keep samples and see if you can get them to pay/help, you should keep and date a sample from every fill as insurance. Unfortunately this is a common occurrence.
John what a piece of information, we didn't know that. It just looked like it was ready to be filled with water. Sad as there is all that berthing space that won't be used. Thanks for advising us all.
I thought it was because they are yet to breach the entrance to the canal. Surely they would have been aware of all costs before getting planning permission
So conclude its who you buy your fuel from if they have a problem you have , if they have diesel stored in a big old rusty still tank over winter and your the first customer your going get the full shit load , ps i deliver fuel to said shit holes
Ah ah great comment, yes so always buy your fuel from somewhere that has regular customers and a good turnover of fuel in the tanks. Everyday is a school day isn't it!! Thanks

Hi you both xx great to hear from you and I'll pass our congratulations onto the Captain. Yes there are so many lock issues and canal closures, it is a continual issue. Can't tell you the number of times we have had to re work out our route!!! Keep well and stay safe xx
Thank you for another amazing video. 😊
Hannah you’re very welcome, so pleased your enjoyed 💕
Goodness! Intense day!
Yes it was but we love them all! Thanks for your great comment, we love hearing from everyone, makes our day reading and answering them all. x
Hi and thanks for the great tip and extra info on the dreaded diesel bug 🐛. BR seems bug free at the moment 👌👌
We lived and cruised aboard for 20 years and never got diesel bug, like you we used an addative, tried to keep the tanks full when possible. What allows the bug to thrive is condensation on the cold metal of the tank and runs down into the fuel where it allows cthe bug to thrive
Phil, yes Michael is very diligent about that, we've 'touch wood' never had it either. Lovely to hear from you.
reminds me of when I fell in the canal trip over the guide rope one bad day get wet but l still miss the boat life
Boat life is great, we agree with you. It's often a mental and physical challenge but one that keeps you young, fit and agile. Great to hear from you x
Hello Jackie and Michael mick from Hull really enjoyed this episode hope you are both well and I will look forward to your next episode xx😊😊😊
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes we are both well, just had our first and only cold of the season.... both recovered now. Hope you are well too x
Hi guy's I am literately just getting into the Narrowboat scene, loving the channel of your journey.
Thank you so much and welcome aboard, lovely to hear from you and know you love our waterways adventures. More to come in the coming weeks.
Who is playing that mandolin? The one with that wonderful melody? Thanks for sharing your day with me. My wife thinks your husband is cute. Lol!
😂😂 Michael loves that… I’ll never hear the last of it. Thanks so much for your lovely comment we really appreciate you taking the time to message us 💕💕
Lovely to meet you! Kathryn, NB Kingfisher 😊
Wow hi Kathryn how lovely to hear from you… hope you liked your little cruise by us 🥰🥰. We’d forgotten we’d video’d you do it was a wonderful surprise when you popped up in our edit. Hope all is well xx
We’re good thanks, just got back home to the USA. We also spotted our moored boat in another of your videos a few weeks ago when you went through Rugeley 😁
Hope you’re both OK and keeping warm. 🧤🧦😉
@Kathryn2964 your famous 👌👌 yes keeping very warm and you?? Xx
Mafting in Florida 🤣😅🌞
Been away from the city's, the traffic and all mayhem is a lifestyle that really appeals to me guys. Have a lovely week and lots of love as always xx
Have a nice day and thanks for the great comment Rachel, we all clearly like the quiet lifestyle.... perfect x
I worked for a customer who managed a recycling centre. He told me they put the majority of it into landfill as too expensive to recycle it all. So don't lose sleep about it. We can only do our bit
Arrr me hearties. You are my favourite RUclips channel
Arrr me Paul, thank you for letting us know. xx
As always living your videos, there seems to be a lot of you nb bloggers coming through middlewich one way or the other and at least 4 of you going up or down the Anderson boat lift. Carry on enjoy your journey! Xx
Cool, thanks. It's a wonder we don't all bump into each other..... not literally of course. Thanks for taking the time to message us. So pleased you are enjoying our little waterways adventures. More fun and games to come x
I know you are now on your break but thought i would post that i have just recently seen another Border Reiver on another canal boat blog passing their boat! So there are two of you. Looking forward to 2024!@@cruisingontheborder
Loved your vlog, always entertaining.
I also love those Portuguese tarts, very morish.
Have a good week.
Thanks so much! 😊 Well named Jayne, our favourite little treat. Great with Jac's coffee!!! x
Very nice, waking up, drinking coffee and your video pops up. ❤😅
Good morning! What a way to start your day, coffee and BORDER REIVER, don't tell Jac she'll be popping round for a cheeky coffee.
Happy to see you two today.
More to come as we move northwards, so pleased you enjoyed and lovely to hear from you too xx
@@cruisingontheborder both of you have a wonderful evening ❤️
How exciting Michael would love to take to the field 🌊 in a boat!! 😵💫😵💫
Hugs and kisses from 🇨🇦
Hi, great comment and question.
Brilliant video thankyou so much for posting, really enjoyed it. Xx
Michael from Leicester
Our pleasure and thank you for your cheeky coffee today. We loved it. Great to hear from your Michael x
Jackie ! You going on about chip buttys,I thought 'ooh I fancy one of them for my tea now', so I did ! only for you to go for the healthy option 😂. I wish I had your willpower 😂 xx
@michaelshaw1662 😂😂
Really enjoy your videos thanks for sharing!
Glad you like them and thank you for your lovely comment. x
The colour of that water though! Put me in mind of RN capsize drill off Whale Island, Pompey! Best chops I ever tasted at HMS Excellent though 😂
Love your videos, look forward to them coming out! Do you film each one the week before uploading them? Thanks
Hope that helps you understand how we do it... xx
Hi Guys
As an avid follower of your adventures I notice that sometimes when you are in t shirts and shorts I have the heating on at home!
a lot of things that cause diesel bug , or a mixture of them
Thanks for you comment, welcome onboard 🙏
any long term diesel storage tanks can suffer with the bug. I dont think its an issue with smaller tanks(ie cars) but maybe it is.
Hi Paul, great comment and question at the same time.... we've never heard of cars getting it either. Not sure, does anyone else know??
Do you think that you will ever go to Wales
Hi Gavin thanks for the question 🙋♀️ we’ve been to Wales with BR… two years ago before we started to video our adventures, love it… 👍👍👍. Hope you’re enjoying our adventures in 🏴 x
I read that there are over 200 species of Blackberries.
Wow we didn't know that, but you can tell when you pick them there are lots of different forms and sizes. Great health food, the darker the colour the better!!. Thanks for your comment Iain. x
Good day Both
Excuse my ignorance in this matter, & being a bit late, "Diesel Bug"
Do you use a special brand of Diesel as i have not heard this happening to cars?
Good day to you to. Thanks for dropping us a comment, lovely to hear from you. Diesel bug is mainly associated with red diesel which is a different type of diesel to the one that cars use. Not as sophisticated hence why bugs grow... some of the other comments we have received on this video explain it in better detail than I can. Jac x
‘Diesel bug’ comes from the higher amount of bio fuel added to regular diesel in recent years. Diesel is naturally hygroscopic and is made even more so because bio fuel is made from grain.
Wow Peter what great information. Let's hope we managed to stay clear of it. Someone has asked if car's suffer from it, do you know if they do???
Besides your boat, what unique names have made an impression on you in other narrow boats ?🤔
Gosh now that is a good question, we nearly bought a boat called Rivendell before BORDER REIVER. There are so many unique and interesting boat names it's difficult to remember them all. Keep watching the videos and let us know when we pass one and you like it's name. We'll keep our eye out and let you know. x
I saw a narrowboat called Two Crewed. That made me laugh 😅
Let us know if you find out… 😀😀 💕
Lol.
"Very windy, as you can see".
Oh no, your hair is blowing in your face !!!
Great comment x
@@cruisingontheborder
Sorry, forget the smiley face for sarcasm. 😊. I'm an Australian ocean sailor, and forgot you are cosseted inland poms. 😄
Where do the wide boats go?? Y’all are wall to wall in the locks.
They get to a certain point and they can't go any further eeekkkk.....
There are many places where wide beam boats just don't fit. According to the CRT maps, wide beam boats can travel the north and the south but there is no wide canal connecting the two areas. They would have to exit at the coast, transit open water and duck back in.
Yes you can us clean Diesel not red do not put in your tank any rubbish
Keep tank toped up
Totally Rodney we always keep them topped up. Thanks for your comment.
It would be nice if you could put up a clothes line to hang your clothes out to dry in the sun.
Yes Pat it would, we can get a little one in the bow of the boat and that helps with drying things. Not great to have wet clothes in a boat. It's important to keep the air flowing but as we are both fresh air freaks that isn't an issue. Thanks for your comment.
My dream to no how to keep a narrow how to afford
The ONLY way to deal with this is to completely empty and clean all fuel tanks and systems, and I mean empty, steam and purge as much as you can, then completely fill with new fuel and additive. If you take fuel from a sole supplier keep samples and see if you can get them to pay/help, you should keep and date a sample from every fill as insurance. Unfortunately this is a common occurrence.
Yes we have heard this to... keep our fingers cross we don't get it.
have you ever dropped the lock key in the canal? now that's embarrassing go fish with the sea manga for the lock key
Thank fully we haven't... we always carry a spare just in case of emergencies. Great question and it sounds like you have???
YES I HAVE THAT'S WHY WE CARRY A SEA MAGNET I WOULD RECOMMEND IT
@robinkey4499 thank you 🙏
Apparently the reason theres no water in that mariner is because the owner refused to pay British waterways for the water
Thanks
SOORY Have to pay £3.60 Fore 1 Year on phone
