    Loved the vid and great to see Leicester and my village of Birstall where I lived for 59 of my 64 years. May 2022 we sold up and moved on to a widebeam, (that’s my wife, our 25 yr old disabled son, and myself), and love it and hoping to have similar adventures. We are currently moored at Pillings Lock Marina. Great to see Leicester & Birstall from a different angle. Thanks.

    North lock has been a problem for a long time. You were trying to open the LH gate but the handrail of the RH gate blocks the handrail of the LH gate, plus the leaky top gates add to the problem.

    That lock has been a pain for a number of years getting progressively worse each time we have been through it. Last week took 3 people to get it open going down.
    Lucky you passed that way when you did or the latest 2 closures could have trapped you in leicester, or stuck at Kilby Bridge, which is still closed after a week and a half.

    Thank you for the tour of Lester. I loved looking at the old buildings when I visited England a while ago. So old, absolutely fascinating. And the twisty tall brick chimneys! Certainly not something you'd see in New Zealand, at least not for long! Shiver, shake and down they'd come.

    Watched the latest travel log of your journey on the canals, now at Leicester.
    Out of curiosity how far do you intend to go up North, come to that how far can you go?
    The lock you had trouble with, what would happen if you were a solo boater & could not open it on your own, it was fortunate that chap new how to solve the problem & help you out.
    The Canal Trust must know about that lock? for the money you pay each year, you would think they would put a lock keeper on the lock till it can be repaired.
    I know they spend a lot of money on the canal system, which is no easy task to repair, including that lock but you would think someone could be there.
    By the way Michael like your humour.

    • @cruisingontheborder
      @cruisingontheborder  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hi.
      Thank you so much for your comment.
      We are heading North but not really sure where to except we will go onto the Leeds and Liverpool canal and head towards Leeds. After that we will take stock and decide where’s next.
      The CRT do have an enormous task keeping up to date with all the work but yes you’d think they might at least put a notice on the lock to help future boaters.
      I’m glad you like my humour. It’s very dry so I do wonder if everyone gets me!

    Thank you for the memories, I lived in Leicester from 6 to 29 years old. Leicester is a very old and interesting city, great museums and buildings. Richard the third's was killed in the battle of Bosworth then his body disapeared then his body was found buried under a modern car park in Leicester. He was dug up and now lies in the Cathedral. Shame it was closed, but maybe you will come back and explore more of the city there is a Roman forum not far from the Abby park moorings. Glad you had a good time but for the lock gates, i have watched lots of the other u-tubers go through with no problems other than the rubbish on the way in to the city. Hi 👋 great comment and idea… we’ll give it a try next time we encounter a problem. Hello Fresh to the boat for delivery is quite easy, we just give them the closet postcode to where we are, ensure we say we’re on a boat, make sure we leave them our mobile number. You get a message giving you a two hour time slot and Jac makes sure she keeps and eye open for the delivery van. They more than often will call to check with us and give us 10-15 mins notice below they arrive. Works a treat. Are you on a boat too??

      @@cruisingontheborder it’s a lovely trip up to Ripon but I hear rumours the Ripon Canal may close soon - I hope it doesn’t, it would be a travesty. Places to moor up. It’s great at Naburn as soon as you get off the tidal Ouse (having joined the tidal Ouse at Selby) Great facilities, shower block etc and it’s only a £2 bus trip into York City Centre. We next moored at Linton lock - the pub there does great food. After that was Boroughbridge - we spent the best part of 2 weeks there. A lovely little town and all you need is there. After Boroughbridge straight up to Ripon and moored up near the basin. Ripon is a lovely little city and well worth visiting the stunning Cathedral. I’m not particularly religious but it’s a very moving experience and the crypt you can enter is the oldest part of any Cathedral in the UK - built in 672AD. Once you’ve done all that I would definitely recommend heading back down the Ouse and up the River Derwent and onto,the Pocklington Canal. Robbie Cumming said it was stunning on there and i agree- the water is so clear it’s like floating on top of an aquarium and the countryside you pass through is fabulous. They get very few visitors up there which is a real shame. People need to use it before we lose it.
      Have you not cruised much in God’s Country?
      Take care guys

      Hi and a massive thanks for all your tips, we’ll certainly use your suggestions 👍👍. We’ve been to Ripon without the boat a few times and love it too 💕💕

    Another comment for you, firstly I so enjoy your vlog. Question, after numerous narrow boat holidays over the years we have taken the plunge & become owners of a 62ft trad next week, what sort of checks, maintenance does Michael do each day?

    • @cruisingontheborder
      @cruisingontheborder  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Michael.
      We have a Canaline 42 engine. I like the engine as it’s pretty easy to work on
      Some boaters check their water and oil levels everyday. I don’t. I check mine about every week as we use hardly any water or oil. The main thing I would say is to check your engine manual for the suggested servicing regime and stick to it rigidly. I am acutely aware of diesel bug. I have a pre fuel and main fuel filter and I change those more often than the regime suggests as I think it’s vital to do so but that maybe just me.
      I confess that I learnt my engine knowledge all from very helpful RUclips videos and also through narrowboat owners Facebook groups.
      Hope that help. Good luck and I’m sure you will love your boat and have lots of fun times.
      Please do ask any further questions you may have
      Take care 👍❤️

      Hi Robert so pleased you enjoyed Jac’s tour of Leicester. We’re planning on the Wigan flight challenge and over to Leeds we think but closures and low water are a big problem at this time of year. There is a closure on the way to Liverpool as well we’re gutted because we would love to of taken BR into Albert Dock…. Maybe next year 🤞

      Great question, we just work out where we will be on the network, locate a postcode/address near the canal then provide Hello Fresh with that location and the delivery vehicle turns up with our lovely order. It's perfect.
