I never imagined I would be fortunate to hear them sing together so, for me it was a pure delight. It was a contest for children virtuosi. The adults watching them are singers and musicians who are judges, including Domingo, Jr. Dimash wished he could sing with Domingo when he was five, so Domingo granted the wish. That's why there's no large audience. The filming captured the children performing and the judges' reactions. It's a 2-part TV program you can view on RUclips. Many of the judges sing with one little girl, a refugee from Ukraine, to "We Are the World." It's beautiful and touching.

Although I don't listen a lot to opera, beautiful performances in the genre, like this one, tends to start my waterworks, a trait I guess I inherited from my father😊 The ONLY times I would see tears in his eyes was when he listened to opera, and most of all while listening to Pavarotti. What really gets me in this one is mutual respect the two have and show for each other. One giant, on his final stretch, and another, just entering the first turn. The entire Virtuosos Talent Show for young classical musicians was recorded in Dec 2023 and telecast a few weeks later in Jan 2024 on the Hungarian tv network Danube tv. The talent show took place in Budapest Hungary. Apparently Hans Zimmer (per an interview with Ralph Simon who asked Dimash to verify his phone call from Hans Zimmer on the DLD Conference appearance in Munich in 2022) called Dimash, I am now assuming, to invite him to be a judge on the Virtuosos Talent Show. Hans along with Placido Domingo and several other music titans are sponsors of the Virtuosos program to help talented young up and coming classical musicians in their careers. Placido met Dimash and immediately told him the two of them would sing a duet and Dimash would sing the tenor part as Placido can no longer sing tenor. The rehearsal was one day before the recording was done so not a lot of preparation for this performance. It turned out beautifully even though Dimash was suffering from a cold at the time. The Virtuosos organizers have released the duet as a single on the streaming platforms so they must love the response from Dimash's fans around the world.

Reactions to some performances I think are better understood if one researches a bit (I was certain an opera would need a bit of pre-existing knowledge), while others tend to be better without any preconception or with the input from the recommendation itself only. Thank you for noticing that I actually do care. 😊 I've added the Dimash - Hauser impromptu to the list and listened to the vocalise and, of course, Dimash is once again easily achieving what others would find daunting at best. Many bel canto teachers have verified that Dimash brings a cross interpretation between rigid classical singing (which must follow norms and exactly as the author of the piece wrote, from the notes and durations, the portamentos, the expressiveness... Everything) and much more popular flexibility. For purists, let's remember that Dimash had the dream of singing with Plácido Domingos since he was a child and it was the Maestro himself, Don Domingos, who suggested the duet (he knew that even with classical training, Dimash would sing as a cross between classical and pop )! Dimash only had one day to remember the work and make the recording, as this moment is part of the competition (like a talent show) for children with musical talent: The “Virtuosos”! Dimash, as well as Placido Domingos, were part of the Jury, accompanied by Erika Miklósa (opera singer), Adrás Keller (violinist, conductor and musical director of the Budapest Concert), Hauser (cellist), Plácido Domingos Jr. (singer and composer), Pablo Sanz Villegas (classical guitarist), Gabriela Rachid (cultural director) and Harvey Goldsmith (music promoter)! The show was in Budapest (Hungary) from January 16th to 26th this year, 2024!

Wow, that Mr. Domingo suggested the duet should be an even greater honor for Dimash than just getting to sing with him. As I am not a great opera fan, I do not feel the difference between "rigid classical singing" and what Dimash did here, but I do hear the beauty of this duet between a legend and a young legend-in-the-making, sort of like passing the torch. A thing of beauty indeed.
