Top tip is always carry a hammer and some nails when going on overnight scavs. Only sleep upstairs and plank the door shut. especially with so many mods and the chance of crashes etc. It's also worth rememebering for base building the zed cannot break down the bug tall fences that are part of the map so finding and area surrounded by those and building a log wall in any gaps is a great way to prevent having to fortify an entire house/houses. Then you can start thinking of building airlocks etc. You should have at least one person specialise in woodwork and the other on metalwork. then a medic and mechanic. if you can get all 4 then it suddenly becomes a lot easier to do anything in the game. I would look at getting the fast building mods as well, just takes the sting out of some of the building time.
Also worth using your quick bar for primary weapon. Also if you haven't turned it on I would suggest adding the setting to let you multi hit zombies will make your life significntly easier if you haven't already. Crowbar or Axe > Baseball Bat.
