I have been a Herb Alpert fan forever. I still listen to his music. This song was his masterpiece. The emotions, the feelings, the love it invokes are timeless. I saw this on the original special, and to find it on RUclips was liking finding a long lost hidden treasure. His music will never go away or go out of style. Its a priceless treasure.

Yes it is quite beautiful. I heard this when I was very young and was captivated by the trumpet melody long before I understood anything else in the song.Today I can listen to Led Zeppelin , Jeff Beck or even Black Label society, but Nothing however can ever take away timeless beauty of this song.

Ever time this no.1 hit plays I go back in time to the spring of 1968 Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School in East Los Angeles CA the love of my life Francine Fregoso, I still dream of her 47 years since we graduated from grade school, I guess I never got over her, they say you never forget your first love, you surely never forget your first heart break

Brings back fabulous memories of 1968 here in UK. I was 17 and going out with the love of my life, messed that up real good.Moved onto second love of my life and messed that up after 4 years.Lo and behold, moved onto love of my life no.3 and married in '77 still the love of my life! Incidentally, when I say "messed up", it was a case of me not "reading between the lines".
Thanks for the trip down memory lane---only seems like yesterday! Great work----5*

I fell in love with Paula in 1968, she was 17 and I was 19. Because of circumstances beyound our control we were not able to be together, but saw each other ever once in a while over the years. The love for each other never ended and remained within each of us over the long and very hard years. This was our song in 1968. We have been together for the first time in our lives for about three months now and listen to this song a lot. She makes me feel young again as does this song. Thanks.

I remember one night, I waled into a dive-bar downtown in 'Alphabet City' (NYC), and, I put this on the jukebox. By the first chorus, everyone stopped talking, and started singing along with Herb.
I'm a huge Bacharach/David (RIP) fan, and, this has got to be one of their all-time BEST numbers (and, that's not an easy to choose ONE from list!). The laid-back Californian feel, and the tremendous orchestral/background sections are just so spot-on in capturing a slice of time.

MozLuv59, don't listen to people who despise you because you are young. The era of music was really from about 1964 to 1979, a wave of simply outstanding musicians washed all over the world. Now it's back to normal and people wonder just what the heck happened. Kudos's to you for recognizing that Herb and Burt via this song were part of that wave. People didn't understand my love of Jethro Tull when I was a lad either.

I'm 20 years old and I've been listening to Herb Alpert for about three years now. I read the comments and in a way I envy all the people that were around when this music was in. It's a shame what music now is. It's terrible. I don't really have anybody to share this type of music with so I'll just enjoy it by myself. I simply love it and I will pass it on to my future kids and they will pass it on to their kids and so on..

Yogafan... i was 11 at the time this song came out. It was 1968! On June 8, 1968 we received a call that my cousin Clay had drowned. He was graduating from Southern Illinois University the next day! He had been my favorite cousin. He taught me so much. He lived on a farm with his mom and two brothers. His dad died from a stoke in 1964. I remember standing in my aunt's kitchen hearing this song for the first time right after the funeral. I will always miss him.

I'M 61 years old now. 1968 seems so far away. Sometimes I will go back and sit on the river bank where Annie and I would sit and watch the water slowly pass on It's way to the sea. It took a part of us with it. A long kiss would seem to stop the river and time, and for a moment we lived in the eternal present. Much too soon she, like that span of river, was gone. I've never loved that way again.

Burt Bacharach wrote this song and had to convince Herb Alpert to sing it, which he reluctantly did for a 1968 TV special and album. It ended up being the biggest hit of his career. There was no plans to release it as a single but so many Radio stations called the company demanding it to be released. Eydie Gorme did "This Girl's In Love" in 1969, shortly followed by Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin.
