Electrically adjustable front and rear seats, electric windows all round, air conditioning, separate audio controls for front and rear passengers with headphone jacks…this was loaded for it’s time, and still holds up in terms of equipment level even today nearly 40 years later.
Well it kind of does, especially inside. Where is the screen in the dash? But it has aged well, I get what you mean. If somebody from 2019 was thrust into a brand-new Granada Scorpio, it wouldn’t feel terribly far off from what a modern car feels like and drives like. Also, 35 years before this was 1949, so yes this car has aged very very well compared to how any 1949 would have felt in 1984!

That first one we had was a B reg like this car, I clearly remember it blowing its head gasket when we were in Torquay one year. Other than that one incident however all 5 cars were 100% reliable and were much loved members of our family. I happened to see a D reg ghia in a car park the other day and it struck me how scarce they are now!! Interesting that the car in this ad didn’t have leather seats, I thought that was part of the deal with the Scorpio trim, perhaps it wasn’t right at the beginning. I can well imagine the hand of doom coming round the back of the seats to whack us kids on the legs when we were squabbling about what music to have on the stereo! Reclining back seats in a car from 1985? Keep in mind this is like comparing a car from 1950 in 1985, ... Things have certainly changed around HERE. I remember when this was all farm land as far the eye could see. Old man Peabody owned all of this. He had this crazy idea about breeding pine trees.
If only life was so simple these days. What gets my goat nowadays is all the electronics that can go wrong and all the stuff that distracts drivers now on the dashboard. It's all gone too far.
@Uncle Joe Stalin I know what you mean. It could have all ended in tears if he mistimed checking what the temp. was outside with when the kid went out into the road!
They're fake plates I'm afraid. The Scorpio plates in the video, not your car. For some reason, (I don't know) Ford used fake plates on a lot of their press vehicles. The WC code was local to Essex, but on B reg cars the sequence would have been WWC (August 1984) to DWC (July 1985). On F reg cars, the sequence was LWC (August 1989) to TWC (July 1989) so your OWC may have been around December 1988/January 1989-registered. Also, one of my neighbours (he's dead now) had a Sierra 2.0i Ghia, also in this colour. And, it was F534RWC incidentally.
I remember when I used to play soccer deep in the woods on an isolated stretch of road in the middle of winter....what a good time that used to be. Couldn't they have gone with an animal Crossing the road?
Hmmm, front reminds me of 1st gen Taurus. Not a bad thing. Steering wheel reminds me of the EA Ford Falcon from the 80s (Australia). I used to love listening to my promotional tape I got with my 1995 Ford Fairmont. Did well showing up the sound system with some of the music contained on it. Nice to see the old Ford tibbe key make an appearance too.
The rear passengers' headphone jacks was a good idea. It would be cool if they had a small color tv back there also, to hook-up the Atari or the Intellivision.
Owned one Scorpio V6 -92 with the manuel gearbox MT75 and one Scorpio V6 -94 with automatic transmission who was changed three times when that gearbox never worked properly.Sadly the V6 was underpowered from its release day and used petrol like it was alcoholic. The last version they destroyed with the fish mouth front and Ford never wanted to tell who the designer was. Most probably the 24 Valve Cosworth version was the greatest of them all but it was rare and usually a mess to buy as a used car. In short, a nice car to drive when it worked.
@@MrRickp78 The Scorpio was one of the first cars in the UK to have a quick clear front windscreen. No-one uses air conditioning to do that, theres a heater and blower for that as well as a mesh on the windscreen for the quick clear button. The windows hadn't steamed up either. So that's not why he did it.
Most people do use air con to control humidity. Air conditioning is not just for cooling air. The electric heated screen is better for defrosting ice as it only stays on for about 15 minutes. On a damp day with several occupants air conditioning is much better to control humidity and temperature plus keep all windows clear. I have a mk2 granada ghia but no air con on that 😁
The 2.8 and 2.9 EFi Cologne engines were smooth and creamy with a decent power-to-weight ratio but were eye-watering for economy and petrol costs, and if you constantly floor it, you'd be lucky to get 20 miles to the gallon, but if you cruised along and took your time then 28-32 mpg should be achievable. The diesel with 4x4 capability was my ride of choice, it was more economical and easier to live with on the fuel economy side as you didn't need to constantly fill up and the 4x4 capability in winter was a no-brainer, because while everyone else was slipping and sliding in their FWD and RWD cars, you had the ability to keep on going.

The Ford audio people only seemed to have two controls for this one - really loud or really soft. Thanks goodness I wasn't listening with headphones. I realize they were trying to show luggage capacity but no sailor and his family travels with giant suitcases like that.
The 80s is when the modern car appeared. Cars like this one drives like a modern car, even offers equipment of a modern car. For looks, this one always looked like a stretched Sierra to me. It is for sure better then what we got after this one, but it is not the most attractive luxury car of its era. I would go for the Rover 800 or the BMW 500. And also Peugeot and Alfa Romeo offered cars that were not quite as refined as the Ford but did look a whole lot better!
Weird that it was called the "Granada Scorpio" in the UK. In Germany, it was just the "Scorpio". The "Granada" name was considered too dated for this completely new car (same goes for the switch from the Taunus to the Sierra). Nice, large, comfortable car, just underpowered with the 2l engine. Too bad they made it ugly with the restyling efforts.
Yup. There's a good chance that the Volvo is still on the road, somewhere. Being a Ford, the Scorpio sadly is probably a pile of orange dust in a dustpan somewhere. Nice cars, with lots of toys (my family owned 2, and we had a boat too!) but my classic of choice is my '82 244 DL.
@@rich_edwards79 Probably true about the 245/240 Estate but DEFINITELY true about the Scorpio. Rear chassis/boot floor rot was a Granada killer, depreciation was rapid when new, they later got cabbed/driven into the ground and not many made it beyond 15 years old. I really can't remember the last time I saw a mk3 Granada in the flesh, but it was not in the last 5/6 years anyway. I can only imagine what the mileage of that Volvo is now.

I always found that sitting in these old 80’s and 90’s fords on a cold winters night with the heaters on was very cosy for some reason.
On the cutting edge of technology!
Wow: rear-headphone ports and electric reclining seats in back, that's impressive. My car is about 30 years newer and doesn't come with that
ill just take out me old mix tape i carry everywhere .
2.9i Ghia's interior lit up like a Christmas tree at night..
Its was cold outside that still snow visible - so 1) he turns on the a/c 2) he opens the sunroof
An elegant and graceful car. Wonder what was on the mix tape.
This is me hahah , constantly Pillering every single fiture inside out when driving :P
Nice to see John Candy loading the car up at the start 😂
1:43 Can someone fill me in on the functions of the clack/board computer? I see clock and ambient temperature, but what are positions 2 and 4?
2 is the date and 4 is a stopwatch/timer.
@@davebunyan1162 Ah thanks!
This car was a OWC the best car I ever had was a OWC in the same colour ...... don't get me started ,,,, crying into my beer F395OWC
I like the way the mum turns around when the daughter opens the rear window and give her that "shut that fucking window" look lol
in the middle of nothing a child with a ball, a classic....
Beautiful Time 😊
The rear passengers' headphone jacks was a good idea. It would be cool if they had a small color tv back there also, to hook-up the Atari or the Intellivision.
Amazing car omg
I find it funny to think how we now look at this and laugh, what are people in 35 years going to say when they see the Nissan Juke or Suzuki Celery?
Same as they do now at those. Laugh.
Who laughs thou? This car has features that most modern cars don't.
For us in post-USSR at begin of nineties Scorpio was real dream car. Still too expensive for many at those years.
Cars today don't have quite a few of these features, we was way ahead in 1984.
Brilliant Cars 1984 Ford Granada’s
Owned one Scorpio V6 -92 with the manuel gearbox MT75 and one Scorpio V6 -94 with automatic transmission who was changed three times when that gearbox never worked properly.Sadly the V6 was underpowered from its release day and used petrol like it was alcoholic. The last version they destroyed with the fish mouth front and Ford never wanted to tell who the designer was. Most probably the 24 Valve Cosworth version was the greatest of them all but it was rare and usually a mess to buy as a used car. In short, a nice car to drive when it worked.
Всё для людей!а у нас в это время жигули и москвичи
For a car that was made in 1984, the exterior design was looking 6-8 years ahead of its time
Why did he put the air con on? When there was clearly snow in piles along the road.
The A/C Means Air conditioning not the Aircon u idiota
@@Park0Bin
What?
Air con is short for air conditioning, you make no sense.
It also dehumidifies the air and prevents condensation and windows misting up.
@@MrRickp78
The Scorpio was one of the first cars in the UK to have a quick clear front windscreen.
Haha driving through snow......with the air conditioning on.
And life jackets in the trunk for their ice lake sailing adventures.
My ac is always on.. every season. In winter it’s great to demist the windscreen
you can turn AC with heat too. Idiot
@@MSV19801 LOL he is really fucking stupid bro. let him alone before he makes us dumb too. he choke himself with his words trying to defend himself. what a waste of sperm
The Ford audio people only seemed to have two controls for this one - really loud or really soft. Thanks goodness I wasn't listening with headphones. I realize they were trying to show luggage capacity but no sailor and his family travels with giant suitcases like that.
FORD 😍😍😍😍👌
A reclining back seat at the push of a button??? Unheard of.
I have it in my 1996 740Li.....
@@TheRazvy1990 This was 1984 tho, and in a Ford. Long before Bimmer.
@@fredaydaybae8450 yes 😁 i really like scorpio....big comfy car and biig windows all around ....🤓
The first Scorpio was released in April 1985.
6:18 LOL Almost as if people had been saying "Ford does not care about quality".
The door key 05:47 looks like it would hurt if swallowed. Just sayin...
Ford Grandma Scorpio looks cool
Silly 80's
My favorite part of the video was the Volvo wagon @ 4:33
Well spotted. Nice colour as well. I then also noticed the following Cavalier SRi racing up the road just as Scorpio family turned off @ 5:24.
@@rich_edwards79 Lol!!!
That should be wearing a Lincoln badge
5.25 Cavalier Sri in the background getting a move on 😁
Lane Hogger I'd of had arse end out in this bad boy on that roundabout, wife or no wife 😂
the equipment level is almost like todays!
