yes, think an engine crane, or a car/truck wheel jack, its hydraulic, pump up, and use the vent valve to release pressure from the cylinder to lower, easy.
Am I seeing correct she let the patient lay down on the outer part of the swing I thought the tag should be under and the smooth side the patient lay on
Very helpful. I’m a caregiver for a family member under hospice care. We just got a Hoyer lift and some instruction from the nurse. So I am immersing myself in video instruction so I am more familiar with the overall process - hopefully more comfortable with the task. This video was well done - good information.
This video made me cry😢. I was mommy's caregiver until she left this world. She was petrified when it came to the hoyer lift. But, as you said, when you gently explain in a reassuring way what you're going to do, everything works out! I was alone with mommy and actually used the lift to elevate her which helped when changing her bedding. One day as I was getting mommy's sheets she was making funny faces and swinging in the lift🤣😂. I said, Mommy you're not afraid anymore huh! I then grabbed my phone and took a photo. I treasure that pic now☹. Mommy has been gone since 2017. I miss her terribly😢. Thank you for this video. My 52 year old mom hasn’t been home since June 23rd. She is wheelchair-bound (for now). She will be coming home from the hospital between tomorrow and Friday with palliative care and we have been supplied a manual hoyer lift similar to that one. No one has instructed me on its use yet. It has a 450 lb weight capacity. My mom is 5’9” and 325 lbs. I will be using this often, as she has many appointments and is on hemodialysis. Alyssa

I was a CNA for years the thing with Boyer lifts are you are to have two people present one for a spotter and one to operate the lift A one person operation is very dangerous this I would not do alone
@CindyEaves hi there! Lots of us who are solo caregivers at home had to learn to use the Hoyer lift alone. And as long as the person being transported, does not weigh too much for the transporter and good technique is used. Take care!
@@caregiversuccessbynancytheNP Cindy is correct! The majority of residents/patients that are heavy require 2 person assist for transfers, which is why there should be 2 people operating a Hoyer lift! Otherwise, the patient/resident can fall & that can result in serious injuries or death!

During the pandemic it even became more evident that people had to work alone. It's all about safety and feeling safe. If the person is too heavy, of course, transfers cannot be done safely. @Tarria Hatcher I did a video on changing bed linens with someone in it. The only difference is you need to put down a towel for cleaning, turning him to the side washing one area and pulling everything wet or dirty through to the other side as you put on a new undergarment . Does that help? Check out that video mentioned above.
Thank you for posting this. My husband had a stroke but was walking short distances until a recent illness and a hospital stay. He's in a rehab facility to hopefully become mobile again. I had no idea how to care for him if he couldn't walk but now I have options.

I work as a direct support professional, I take care of a lot of different people with intellectual disabilities in their homes. I'm here to brush up a bit to better help my people in power chairs. Thank you for the video. I actually had to get lifted by this as part of my training, I was not a fan, I don't like being touched or man handled personally so I always talk through the procedure and if my people are verbal I make sure to ask before touching.
Hi Kaity, thanks for commenting. It is very important to have the person you are lifting be aware of what is happening...even if you are not sure he/she can hear you or understands. Using a calm voice goes a long way to alleviate fears and get better cooperation. I will be doing a video on using a walker and a cane. I do have one on using a wheelchair to transfer out of bed. Hi Kaity R, I know it's been over a year since you posted this comment. I wanted to mention that even if your patient is nonverbal or deaf they can still sense if you are speaking to them. It's good to describe what you are doing just as you would with a patient who is verbal and has hearing. There was a man who was in a vegetative state but came out of it. He said he appreciated when staff would talk to him as if he were any other person. Although he could not respond he really enjoyed when people spoke to him or knocked and said hello before moving him or bathing him.
You NEED to do a video on how to lift a person that's fallen on the floor. I got one of these specifically for that reason. My son-in-law and I both could not get my wife up from having fallen down. I finally had the need to use the lift for that very reason and I'm here to tell you, it's quite a different procedure than picking a person up from the bed or a chair.
Hi there. The hoyer lift is not meant to lift people off the floor, It is only for safe transfers from bed to chair and back. If a person falls on the floor, you need to call 911 and let the e m t's and police help pick the person up. Then, the person needs to be a valley waited after the fall. @@caregiversuccessbynancytheNP actually, after I wrote this, I found three videos giving instructions on how to lift from the floor from three different lift manufacturers, including Hoyer. When my wife falls, it’s not a hard fall, it’s more of a slide off the bed or a slip off the toilet. EMTs and police are not necessary, she just needs help getting back up. Incidentally, we did do the lift correctly, according to the instructional videos; I guess I’m smarter than I look.

Great educational video. I suggest bringing the wheelchair to the patient in the hoyer lift once she is away from the bed rather than moving the Patient in the hoyer lift across the room. The less you have to push a patient in a hoyer lift, the safer the transfer.
Thank you for your comment. The reason the wheelchair is across the room is because the transfer was done with one person assist. By propping the wheelchair against the wall, it eliminated the need for another other person to hold the wheelchair from tipping. Best case scenario is having another pwrson to assist you.
Thank you Nancy. I wonder if you could demonstrate putting a patient on the toilet with similar sling with commode cut out. I have ALS and my wife is well versed with our lift. The problem we have is i'm always slightly reclined in my sling and can't get positioned on the toilet properly.
Hi Richard, basically it is the same process as putting someone in a chair, but you would need a bigger space to maneuver the Hoyer lift. Get one of those commode or shower chair with wheels for better positioning . Place it next to the bed. Have her Hoyer lift you from the bed to the commode, then she can wheel you to the toilet. She can place it on top of the toilet.
I know this is old but others may see this, it sounds like your reclined position may be from the sling straps adjustments. Try making the leg straps longer and or the upper body straps shorter to put you in a more upright position when lifted.
When you said you reverse when you put them back in bed. Do you put the same color loops where you did when you picked your assitant up or do you mean you change where you put the blue and purple at?

Thanks for this Nancy!! I have a few questions.......I just got my Hoyer lift for my wife, and it also has Chains. What are the chains for?? And the sling I got is a Commode full body sling, there are Color coded loops on the sling, why are they color coded? So I am guessing I won't need the chains, but just wondered what they are for again? So I will put the Loops of the sling on those hooks like you are doing, correct? Any other help would be Appreciated!! Thanks in advance! Also, I have carpet in the bedroom where I will be using this, but it's matted down and old. Will I have problems pushing the lift with carpet? I only have to push the lift about 4-5 feet each time I use it, back and forth. Thanks again.
This brand looks much durable than the other video i looked at that had plastic support ties . This looks like a fabric. Though how do you get the sling out from under you while in the wheelchair ?
Hi there! You DO NOT remove the sling. It remains under the person so you can eventually transfer him/her back to bed. First, it is difficult to remove without causing skin shearing and second, it is nearly impossible to get the sling back under the person properly so that there are no wrinkles or unevenness, so leave the sling under the person. How do you decide which color strap to use? My brother is small about 95lbs. He doesn't bend at all because of total spinal fusion. So he is a bit scared of the lift but my back needs the lift
Hi there! The color straps that is closest to the sling would make it a tighter fit and easier for a lightweight person. You don't want the sling to be tight under him. It should have a little bit of a hammock effect. Let me know how you did!!❤
Same here as well 🤦 i work nights and at my last job we didnt have to get people up but this new job requires it and im so lost because i dont see none of the lifts that we use on any of these videos

The medical supply company sent me a medium sling with the hoyer lift and ut was all charged to Medicaid. Problem is I needed a small sling and instead of letting me know they didn't have one, they sent the wrong one. Now I have to pay out of pocket for a small sling....after I locate where to purchase it!
When do toy lock the hoyer lift wheels? It appears they were unlocked during both the lift from the bed and the descent to the wheelchair. Also, do the hoyer legs stay open while you complete the transfer?
Hi Kristi, Yes the hoyer lift wheels should be opened and locked as you're cranking the person up off the bed. Then they are unlocked , roll it across the room, open the legs up and you don't have to lock them when you're lowering someone in a wheelchair. Once you're getting ready to lower the hoyer into the wheelchair is the best time to lock it if you can. Hope this helps. 😀
hmmm, that's a tough one! It is cleaner for a homebound person to have linoleum or wood floors anyway. Plus the wheels could get stuck in the carpet, and that could be dangerous. Plze subscribe and check out the ebook i made for you. 💟
My mother is heavy set and is unable to use both legs in a constructive way. Is it possible to use something like this to move her to her wheelchair without hurting her? I've tried transferring her using a strap, or towel around her back but it's incredibly difficult and/or I end up leaving her in pain. She's in a small-ish room on carpet and the only way to do this is to get the wheelchair as close as possible, count to 3, heave-ho, and move her over and vice versa. I'm worried that someday I, or someone else, will end up dropping her and really doing a number on her. Thoughts or suggestions?
Hi J, perhaps the best thing is to get your local home care agency to send out a physical therapist to explore all options unique to you and Mom. You will need a doctor's order. Let me know how you do.
Fantastic and informative video. I've used a hoyer to transfer many patients. The only thing I noticed is the sling was reversed where the handles weren't accessible..thanks so much for this video. I picked up many tips!!
I'm about to have to use a hoyer lift as the patient for a few weeks post-surgery, but I won't be able to lay on my side or anything but my back at all the first week, nor will I be able to sit up independently. I am a full-time wheelchair user as it is, and I don't have much core strength, but I'm also autistic, and I don't think I would handle going to a care facility after surgery well, so I'm trying to prepare to be able to tell me aide and friends and family who are coming by when my aide isn't here how to help me. How do you get on the sling if you're not allowed to roll off your back onto your side yet or doing so is very painful?
Hi Ezekiel, that may be painful since the sling is just that...it bends like a hammock. Are you being evaluated by a physical therapist? They would be your best bet! Let me know if you need any other help and please subscribe!
Carpeting is a problem... The wheels don't move as well and the lift can actually tip over. If you were caring for somebody that requires equipment like this it's best to remove the carpet and have some kind of wood flooring. This way it's easier for cleanup and for other needs as a person progresses through their stages of illness. Please let me know if there's any other questions you have, and thanks for reaching out. Nurse you put the sling outside in. The black strip in the middle of the sling pad should be outside so you can hold the patient or resident in the middle of the chair.
Well there's also electric ones out there and you'll find that in the homes. They work a lot easier but a lot of people do have the older models, unfortunately. @@SuperMoula do you have medical insurance for mom? it should be covered under that. You can call moms medical insurance and ask how it is covered. It is called a Hoyer Lift >it can be crank or electric. Your brother will need to use Alzheimers diagnosis and code for inability to walk on the prescription.

I hear you! Make sure there is a gel cushion on the chair. Also important to reposition every 2 hours....back to bed on the side during the day. Check on blood albumin> may need more protein in the diet and make sure to have the person drink a lot of fluids to keep the skin healthy and supple. My mother has bullous pemphigoid in between thighs. Hoyer sling used in nursing home with criss-cross straps are hurtful. Then she has pressure sores. My sister who has ms at a nursing facility also has bed sores sitting in those slings all day. Any solution such as using better equipped slide board transfers and wider adjustable waist belt transfers?
@@slewmayhew9515 Hi! Sounds like you need Physical Therapy to consider better and safer ways to transfer your mom and sister with two separate issues. A transfer board is great if the person can weight bare and pivot to a wheelchair and not a hoyer lift, of course. If there are buttock decubiti, a transfer board would worsen them. Talk with nursing staff, also the sling I used did not have a criss- cross strap. Hope this helps. 🙂
Wow! I didn't expect to get an immediate response. Nancy, you are a Godsend! During the pandemic the nursing homes are very short staffed and the workers are just barely trained the ones who are not sick and able to care for people. I am just throwing this thought out - what do people do in the third world countries transferring their loves ones who have no access to all these conveniences we have?
@@slewmayhew9515 I’ve been a c5/6 quadriplegic since I was 15. I’m about to hit my 51st birthday and close to 36 years since a diving accident. My advice is to not let the staff leave the sling under a person. It’s only laziness. Make sure they’re sitting in a properly fitted modern chair with a high quality cushion.
Hi Lew, as you are lowering your Dad down into the wheelchair, which needs to be locked in place, pull up on the back of the sling. It takes some practice to do both at once but you will get the hang of it. Also, consider putting the chair against a wall to stabilize it in place but be careful not to hit your Dad's head as you lower the sling down. If your sling has straps.. pull him in to position before lowing his into the chair.. It'll help if you had someone to pull him back while you lower him into the chair. Then once he is in.. sometimes you can grab the back of the patients pants to tug them up a little. It works for me. My mom has the same issue.

I was a CNA for years the thing with Boyer lifts are you are to have two people present one for a spotter and one to operate the lift A one person operation is very dangerous this I would not do alone
@CindyEaves hi there! Lots of us who are solo caregivers at home had to learn to use the Hoyer lift alone. And as long as the person being transported, does not weigh too much for the transporter and good technique is used. Take care!

Cindy is correct! The majority of residents/patients that are heavy require 2 person assist for transfers, which is why there should be 2 people operating a Hoyer lift! Otherwise, the patient/resident can fall & that can result in serious injuries or death!

During the pandemic it even became more evident that people had to work alone. It's all about safety and feeling safe. If the person is too heavy, of course, transfers cannot be done safely. @Tarria Hatcher I did a video on changing bed linens with someone in it. The only difference is you need to put down a towel for cleaning, turning him to the side washing one area and pulling everything wet or dirty through to the other side as you put on a new undergarment . Does that help? Check out that video mentioned above.

I actually had to get lifted by this as part of my training, I was not a fan, I don't like being touched or man handled personally so I always talk through the procedure and if my people are verbal I make sure to ask before touching.
Hi Kaity, thanks for commenting. It is very important to have the person you are lifting be aware of what is happening...even if you are not sure he/she can hear you or understands. Using a calm voice goes a long way to alleviate fears and get better cooperation. I will be doing a video on using a walker and a cane. I do have one on using a wheelchair to transfer out of bed. Hi Kaity R, I know it's been over a year since you posted this comment. I wanted to mention that even if your patient is nonverbal or deaf they can still sense if you are speaking to them. It's good to describe what you are doing just as you would with a patient who is verbal and has hearing. There was a man who was in a vegetative state but came out of it. He said he appreciated when staff would talk to him as if he were any other person. Although he could not respond he really enjoyed when people spoke to him or knocked and said hello before moving him or bathing him.

You NEED to do a video on how to lift a person that's fallen on the floor. I got one of these specifically for that reason. My son-in-law and I both could not get my wife up from having fallen down. I finally had the need to use the lift for that very reason and I'm here to tell you, it's quite a different procedure than picking a person up from the bed or a chair.
Hi there. The hoyer lift is not meant to lift people off the floor, It is only for safe transfers from bed to chair and back. If a person falls on the floor, you need to call 911 and let the e m t's and police help pick the person up. Then, the person needs to be a valley waited after the fall. @@caregiversuccessbynancytheNP actually, after I wrote this, I found three videos giving instructions on how to lift from the floor from three different lift manufacturers, including Hoyer. When my wife falls, it’s not a hard fall, it’s more of a slide off the bed or a slip off the toilet. EMTs and police are not necessary, she just needs help getting back up. Incidentally, we did do the lift correctly, according to the instructional videos; I guess I’m smarter than I look.

Great educational video. I suggest bringing the wheelchair to the patient in the hoyer lift once she is away from the bed rather than moving the Patient in the hoyer lift across the room. The less you have to push a patient in a hoyer lift, the safer the transfer.
Thank you for your comment. The reason the wheelchair is across the room is because the transfer was done with one person assist. By propping the wheelchair against the wall, it eliminated the need for another other person to hold the wheelchair from tipping. Best case scenario is having another pwrson to assist you.
Thank you Nancy. I wonder if you could demonstrate putting a patient on the toilet with similar sling with commode cut out. I have ALS and my wife is well versed with our lift. The problem we have is i'm always slightly reclined in my sling and can't get positioned on the toilet properly.
Hi Richard, basically it is the same process as putting someone in a chair, but you would need a bigger space to maneuver the Hoyer lift. Get one of those commode or shower chair with wheels for better positioning . Place it next to the bed. Have her Hoyer lift you from the bed to the commode, then she can wheel you to the toilet. She can place it on top of the toilet.
I know this is old but others may see this, it sounds like your reclined position may be from the sling straps adjustments. Try making the leg straps longer and or the upper body straps shorter to put you in a more upright position when lifted.

When you said you reverse when you put them back in bed. Do you put the same color loops where you did when you picked your assitant up or do you mean you change where you put the blue and purple at?

Would this be safe for someone with skin breakdown in the scrotal area?
If the person is wearing a dressing to protect the skin breakdowns the transfer should be safe, especially since the sling prevents shearing.
Need to make sure the Hoyer wheels are in LOCKED position BEFORE pumping Hoyer/patient into upright position. Same when lowering into bed or chair.

Thanks for this Nancy!! I have a few questions.......I just got my Hoyer lift for my wife, and it also has Chains. What are the chains for?? And the sling I got is a Commode full body sling, there are Color coded loops on the sling, why are they color coded? So I am guessing I won't need the chains, but just wondered what they are for again? So I will put the Loops of the sling on those hooks like you are doing, correct? Any other help would be Appreciated!! Thanks in advance! Also, I have carpet in the bedroom where I will be using this, but it's matted down and old. Will I have problems pushing the lift with carpet? I only have to push the lift about 4-5 feet each time I use it, back and forth. Thanks again.

This brand looks much durable than the other video i looked at that had plastic support ties . This looks like a fabric. Though how do you get the sling out from under you while in the wheelchair ?
Hi there! You DO NOT remove the sling. It remains under the person so you can eventually transfer him/her back to bed. First, it is difficult to remove without causing skin shearing and second, it is nearly impossible to get the sling back under the person properly so that there are no wrinkles or unevenness, so leave the sling under the person. How do you decide which color strap to use? My brother is small about 95lbs. He doesn't bend at all because of total spinal fusion. So he is a bit scared of the lift but my back needs the lift
Hi there! The color straps that is closest to the sling would make it a tighter fit and easier for a lightweight person. You don't want the sling to be tight under him. It should have a little bit of a hammock effect. Let me know how you did!!❤

The medical supply company sent me a medium sling with the hoyer lift and ut was all charged to Medicaid. Problem is I needed a small sling and instead of letting me know they didn't have one, they sent the wrong one. Now I have to pay out of pocket for a small sling....after I locate where to purchase it!

When do toy lock the hoyer lift wheels? It appears they were unlocked during both the lift from the bed and the descent to the wheelchair. Also, do the hoyer legs stay open while you complete the transfer?
Hi Kristi, Yes the hoyer lift wheels should be opened and locked as you're cranking the person up off the bed. Then they are unlocked , roll it across the room, open the legs up and you don't have to lock them when you're lowering someone in a wheelchair. Once you're getting ready to lower the hoyer into the wheelchair is the best time to lock it if you can. Hope this helps. 😀

My mother is heavy set and is unable to use both legs in a constructive way. Is it possible to use something like this to move her to her wheelchair without hurting her? I've tried transferring her using a strap, or towel around her back but it's incredibly difficult and/or I end up leaving her in pain. She's in a small-ish room on carpet and the only way to do this is to get the wheelchair as close as possible, count to 3, heave-ho, and move her over and vice versa. I'm worried that someday I, or someone else, will end up dropping her and really doing a number on her. Thoughts or suggestions?
Hi J, perhaps the best thing is to get your local home care agency to send out a physical therapist to explore all options unique to you and Mom. You will need a doctor's order. Let me know how you do.

I'm about to have to use a hoyer lift as the patient for a few weeks post-surgery, but I won't be able to lay on my side or anything but my back at all the first week, nor will I be able to sit up independently. I am a full-time wheelchair user as it is, and I don't have much core strength, but I'm also autistic, and I don't think I would handle going to a care facility after surgery well, so I'm trying to prepare to be able to tell me aide and friends and family who are coming by when my aide isn't here how to help me. How do you get on the sling if you're not allowed to roll off your back onto your side yet or doing so is very painful?

Hi Ezekiel, that may be painful since the sling is just that...it bends like a hammock. Are you being evaluated by a physical therapist? They would be your best bet! Let me know if you need any other help and please subscribe!
What if the bedroom is carpeted? Can the lift still roll and maintain stability?
Carpeting is a problem... The wheels don't move as well and the lift can actually tip over. If you were caring for somebody that requires equipment like this it's best to remove the carpet and have some kind of wood flooring. This way it's easier for cleanup and for other needs as a person progresses through their stages of illness. Please let me know if there's any other questions you have, and thanks for reaching out. If you're transferring the patient without another person on stand by, I suggest moving the wheelchair closer to the patient's bedside.
Hi there. The reason the wheelchair is across the room is so I could use a wall to support the back of it so that one person could leverage the sling into the chair without it tipping.

Nurse you put the sling outside in. The black strip in the middle of the sling pad should be outside so you can hold the patient or resident in the middle of the chair.

It's also a good idea to crisscross the bottom slings between her legs before hooking them up for added safety.

@@SuperMoula do you have medical insurance for mom? it should be covered under that. You can call moms medical insurance and ask how it is covered. It is called a Hoyer Lift >it can be crank or electric. Your brother will need to use Alzheimers diagnosis and code for inability to walk on the prescription.
Every time my mom and I put her husband into the hoyerlift hes always seems to be laying down instead of sitting up, not sure what we're doing wrong??
Hi there! Make sure when you position the lift under him, his head is not lying on the sling. This way, he will be more upright.

The drawback to this is staying on the sling for lift does cause bed sores in my experience. I am dealing with some right now from that method.
I hear you! Make sure there is a gel cushion on the chair. Also important to reposition every 2 hours....back to bed on the side during the day. Check on blood albumin> may need more protein in the diet and make sure to have the person drink a lot of fluids to keep the skin healthy and supple. My mother has bullous pemphigoid in between thighs. Hoyer sling used in nursing home with criss-cross straps are hurtful. Then she has pressure sores. My sister who has ms at a nursing facility also has bed sores sitting in those slings all day. Any solution such as using better equipped slide board transfers and wider adjustable waist belt transfers?
@@slewmayhew9515 Hi! Sounds like you need Physical Therapy to consider better and safer ways to transfer your mom and sister with two separate issues. A transfer board is great if the person can weight bare and pivot to a wheelchair and not a hoyer lift, of course. If there are buttock decubiti, a transfer board would worsen them. Talk with nursing staff, also the sling I used did not have a criss- cross strap. Hope this helps. 🙂
Wow! I didn't expect to get an immediate response. Nancy, you are a Godsend! During the pandemic the nursing homes are very short staffed and the workers are just barely trained the ones who are not sick and able to care for people. I am just throwing this thought out - what do people do in the third world countries transferring their loves ones who have no access to all these conveniences we have?
@@slewmayhew9515 I’ve been a c5/6 quadriplegic since I was 15. I’m about to hit my 51st birthday and close to 36 years since a diving accident. My advice is to not let the staff leave the sling under a person. It’s only laziness. Make sure they’re sitting in a properly fitted modern chair with a high quality cushion.

I can’t get my Dad seated on the wheelchair without tilting his chair or leaving him slouched. Any advice?
Hi Lew, as you are lowering your Dad down into the wheelchair, which needs to be locked in place, pull up on the back of the sling. It takes some practice to do both at once but you will get the hang of it. Also, consider putting the chair against a wall to stabilize it in place but be careful not to hit your Dad's head as you lower the sling down. If your sling has straps.. pull him in to position before lowing his into the chair.. It'll help if you had someone to pull him back while you lower him into the chair. Then once he is in.. sometimes you can grab the back of the patients pants to tug them up a little. It works for me. My mom has the same issue.
