Heartbreaking 💔 I grew up in Santa Cruz and left or should I say like so many other generational locals was forced out by skyrocketing prices from the Silicon Valley boom. And it was all downhill from there. Going to visit my last few family members and friends broke my heart to see the worsening state of a town once so beautiful, loving, and kind. And for years now Mother Nature has been showing her fury, but its landed on deaf ears. RIP to my home, once a beautiful peaceful paradise that has been destroyed by greed 😢 Thank you for the decades of kindness, beauty, and love you shared with me and so many others. I miss you everyday and hope the people there now who are taking you for granted will wake up very soon and start making the amends you deserve ❤
Back when California was truly the Golden State. In the mid 70's I hit the road from LA traveling up and down the coast for almost 3 years. Stopping and staying at several communities along the way and getting a job for a few months and then back on the road. Great and memorable experience and so many great coastal communities and Santa Cruz was one of my favorite places. Back when you didn't' have to be wealthy to live near the beach.
The decadence of new Rome is bound to turn on itself!..........the nasty things it did to get to the top will come crashing down faster than everyone is prepared to accept!
Seems a lot of people just can’t help themselves and jump to conclusions without knowing the facts the pier was in the process of being dismantled for repairs when high waves caused it to collapse, making it more of a construction accident than an unexpected disaster
This so much. Preventative maintenance is distinctly unsexy, unromantic, unheroic to anyone who has to pay the bill for it. Worse: by going with the low bidder on all things (i.e. government spending), that literally assures that the time-to-failure is going to be far shorter than it needed to be or could have been! Everything lead by government falls into this trap. Suburbs are fundamental negative ROI because of their financial structure and things like preventative maintenance being funded by sales and property tax Ponzi schemes 99% of the time.
Is this your first year being awake? This stuff happens all the time, year after year. And poorly educated and low intelligence people read all kinds of doom and gloom into it. But it's the same this year as last year: shit happens.
When I was a boy there were three arches now there is only one. That has always been more distressing than anything about the pier, that and there are no longer any open fields running to the cliff edges in Pleasure Point.

@Btstaz California’s state and local government debt is roughly $1.6 trillion, which includes a proper accounting of the state’s unfunded liabilities. To put this in perspective, this works out to about $125,000 of debt per California household and exceeds the annual GDP of all but 13 countries.

@@3rd-eye-neenja563 I've frequented Santa Cruz since the '60's. Before you were born. Even before it became infested with vampires. The pier was long overdue for structural remediation. But structures like that don't just collapse spontaneously: they fail under transient excessive strain. Like storms with high winds and waves. I've been on the pier many times thru the decades. In good weather. Would I go out on the pier during a severe storm? No. Not in the last 10-20 years. So, yeah, it was rotten. Was it safe in good weather? Yeah, sure.

If Mr Trump ever built a pier, it would because he imagined it was representative of his imagined maleness. Contrarily, if he actually built a pier actually representative of his actual maleness, it would be a popsicle stick in a stagnant gutter.
