Shield Bash - Zelda Animated Short

- When two adventurers find themselves interested in the same shield, a chase ensues to determine who will come out on top!
This short film was created as my sophomore film for university! We were tasked to create a short over the course of a semester. This is what I came up with!

The sword broke after a single hit to a display only shield, likely also just a display sword, the bow, I'm not sure.
I'm curious as to how the Twilight Bow got there, didn't only Twilight Zelda use it against Ganonforf and I guess when Twilight Link was summoned to Wild Link's deep sea issues in his Hyrule, he must have had it on him.. did the Queen let him have it?
P sure theyre just displays, considering they played around with it, no way they would risk it

I love that he broke the sword at the end, it’s such a endearing characteristic of this incarnation of Link by this point.

You'd think the bow and arrow would be too, but I guess even a toy bow could do what she did.
Dude, the micro expressions were off the charts, and just oozed personality. Bravo, 10/10

I love that after Zelda parry's link he's got a wild look in his eyes like he's back in Hyrule fields fighting monsters and how he had to shake his head to calm himself.

First thought I had when Zelda grabbed the bow was "oh my god she's sending Link into the Shrine if Resurrection personally", glad to see that it turned out different.
Dumb Uni kids is the peak aesthetic, gratz on the project!

I thought they were training when she picked up the bow and arrow but I'm grateful for the plot twist nonetheless!
When I saw Link grab the Master Sword I was about ready to call them a hacker! I have never once got the Master Sword within 2min of gameplay!
Does anyone wanna talk about how this guy literally managed to call what Link's new tunic would look like in TotK? Insane.
It’s the same as his look in the first teaser that dropped in June 2019.
Still, good call on the creator's part to follow the teaser, rather than breath of the wild (or the Shirtless Barbarian look we all adore.)
He just changed the undershirt of the Hylian Tunic with the Champions tunic undershirt, and boom you essentially the ToTK champions leathers.
I would watch an entire Zelda show like this, it was so cute and we'll put together!

In that respect, it kind of reminds me of watching stuff like the Dragon Prince or Avatar.
Ideally, animation should be expressive and exaggerated. It's kind of at its core and is even one of the rules of it haha
It would be great if it were an anime, i would love to animations like these in a Zelda anime to be honest.
@@HXX3dMaybe you could make a Whatif Series Where Zelda Get Link to Teach her How To Defend herself and Survive in the Wild after They Defeated Calamity Ganon.. I'm honestly surprised.They're already not married considering Tears of kingdom takes place six years after Breath of the Wild And they live in the same house.. Which is not really appropriate Unless they are a married couple.
Again you did excellent on the animation.. I like the show but don't tell Type of Series where Dialoge Is not needed.

This animation was just so light and bouncy, I’m so used to seeing stiff characters with barely any expressions- but this was just plain fantastic! Really a step above normal RUclips animations
Thanks a ton that means a lot! I really enjoyed getting out of my comfort zone with this project by making the characters more bouncy and expressive. Felt like I learned a lot.

this was an awesome video, but i don't recommend making the rims of the eyes red or as large eyes. even then, great job bc this was amazing
I love how expressive Link and Zelda’s face is.
Man.... This animation hit me so hard!! Right in the nostalgic dude, even when they're not the same animator, the animation give that sweet vibe of "Racing for Rupees"
Those kinda of animation back in 2016/2015 don't remeber too well, gosh this animation is so amazing!!!

This animation is amazing! I just can’t believe two people would ever go to such lengths to get a TRAVELER’S SHIELD of all things.
The traveler's shield, especially with this pattern, is ironically quite rare in the game

@@HXX3d I have it because I'm on my way to recreate the box art by making an accurate Link and finding back the place that was used as a reference for the cover artwork. Pretty fun to do

I know right? Pulls out bow of light master sword all for a Traveler's shield. Granted everything was "Display use only" but still~~
The amount of small detail work, the overall movement being as liveful as it seemingly can be... This is some professional work right here, and I'm loving it.
The fact that Zelda is right handed and link was left handed
Gotta acknowledge the physics defying shield changing its roll direction when link falls over, a true shield worthy of them both
This is probably the most detailed 3D Zelda animation I've seen ever. You've got some raw talent herw.

If Dreamworks made a Zelda game, it would look similar to this. The expressions and camera angles are iconic.
I'd happily watch a series / play a full game with this quality.

That was exactly what I thought, but wasn't sure why! It felt like Dreamworks to me! Absolutely incredible work by the animator

Well i think it would look more like Kena, this animation is pretty but i think thats the kind of graphics an animation studio would try to make.
Funny enough, Nintendo was actually pitched a Zelda movie idea from Imagi Studio, the same company that made the first CGI TMNT movie. Nintendo turned it down, but funnily enough the design for the sword Ganondorf used in the pitch trailer became Demise's sword in Skyward Sword. The energy in this reminds me a bit of that, but with a more traditional character design than what Imagi used.
The emotion conveyed in this is breathtaking, I strive to animate this well
This is so adorable I can't stand it- I love their eyes too, the expressions are so well done. Would love to see more of these!
I actually really like their dynamic in this, almost being portrayed as mischievous siblings rather than romantic interests to one another. It would be interesting to have a game that portrayed them that way

I love how fans pour heart and dedication into animations, and then a movie studio is like “nah live action is better”
It's fun seeing them be playful with each other.
And they say they can't do a show with a character that never speaks!

I'd say Primal does this pretty well. Granted side characters do speak, and Spear does vocalize himself non verbally often, but it does a pretty good showcase of the show not tell sort of writing
This really makes me wish Nintendo put more of these kind of cutscenes in their zelda games, actually, just give us a Zelda an animated series :) everything was so incredibly well done
As much as I'd love a Zelda animated series, I think Link's status as a blank slate in the games would result in them drastically rewriting him with some kind of really off personality for a series.
There was a LoZ animated series, but it's 80s/90s American animation style (Think He-man) and was awful I am pretty sure
@@channelwithout Not necessarily. Link is known for being a blank slate yes, but keep in mind that every Link is different. That means that there's no rewriting involved if Link was a little bit more expressive on the big screen.

Love the detail of links pupils being small while he is angry and then going to normal/large size again once he sees the shild broken

The exppression and movement Link has when charging in towards Zelda has some pure COMMANDO Bennett energy. I love it.

God, this warms my heart as a Zelda fan. I remember reading something about this animation and when I came across it, I was more then pleasantly surprised at how good this was. Words can only do so much justice to describe this masterpiece and the creativity on display. Excellent job.

Soo good, a lot of personality in the movements, clever story and good setting. Also nice that it's a silent short is, as I feel this deserves pro voice acting, so it's better to have nothing than something that'll break the immersion.

Same basically. I think seeing the mouths move as though they're talking, while not having voice acting, feels a bit jarring. But beyond that the animation is amazing to watch, and I'd argue it's studio-level quality
I love it. Something about how they express themselves and how they move for whatever reason reminds me of like… dreamworks films and the like.

Cel Shading animation like this, arcane, spiderverse, etc are all top tier animation. Pixar's animation is also really good, but they are more on the realistic side while Cel Shading is on the creative side, I prefer this style, it's just so unique and expressive. This is really good.
Link and Zelda having a rivalry is pretty dang interesting. It'd be interesting if there were spin off games that explored that (aside from Smash).

@@wapandaforever242 That did happen but it was completely one sided. Link pretty much did his own thing and didn't consider her a rival for anything, just someone to protect (as always).
They had a rivalry for a long time in the cartoon : "Excuuuuuuuuuse me, princess!"

I actually can't stop watching this. It's some movie quality stuff. Every movement just has so much energy and character to it!
the emotion these characters display is on the level of pixar and dreamworks. certainty not like anything ive seen on youtube before. excellent work.
Smooth movement and slight movement is what gives life to the characters

And, at least to me, this is how it feels using any weapon in Breath of the Wild. Just one use, and boom, it's dust.
I hated how there was no repair system, some of those weapons were really hard to get.

I love how they pick up random weapons, but they're all actually overpowered weapons in game, except for the shield

If you like this style, you should check out RWBY - the first 3 seasons were done in Poser Pro and they look pretty janky by comparison, but season 4 and onward are done in Maya and they are GORGEOUS.

I always come back into this animation and for me the context is that they're two dumb teens in high school getting hyped about some toys.
Seriously Link's short lived joy with the Master Sword at the end gives me serotonin.
The quality of the character animation here is on par with some Overwatch shorts imo. This is _really_ good, and I'm looking forward to your future in the animation industry!

Okay, allow me to confess. I had my doubts when I clicked on your channel and saw the Team Fortress 2 animations though the thumbnail of this video looked good so I thought that I might be wrong. Glad to see that you really and truly are one of the best animators I've ever seen on this platform, like Zelda and Link both remind me of Hiccup and Astrid from the first How To Train Your Dragon movie, and that's so nostalgic for me! The shield, both of their expressions, the storytelling and the plot twist, it all feels so good! This is truly a great little animation!

@@flamingrubys11 Nothing much, Fawful's Minion, Designing For and other TF2 RUclipsrs have sold me on that. It's just that SFM animators don't necessarily have the straightest track record when it comes to making great, funny and/or appropriate content, in my experience. I truly do honestly hope that Valve actually pays some level of attention and respect aside from letting some developers make the occasional bug fix every now and again, I am in that camp. It's just that Team Fortress isn't my cup of tea.
