wish i could extend my limbs and wiggle and wobble away to the wasteland
I always loved cut-outs, especially the ones by Matisse!
I love these types of videos. Not only are we learning about a contemporary artist, but we're also prompted to make our own art. It's truly amazing! Thank you for your great content!
Thanks for being such a thoughtful member of this community! And Matisse's cut-outs are indeed magnificent. Cécile and I spoke about them during our conversation. It could be an interesting variation on this assignment to skip the drawing step and just pick up some paper and scissors and see what kind of figure emerges!
One of the best Jazz singers of our time and she’s giving art instructions 😍😍😍
I love these figures. Even more that they are embroidery.
I clicked because I am a huge fan of Cécile's music but ended up falling in love with her art too
i was gonna make a joke about paper people being too close to each other, but she mentioned it lol. love this, i'm gonna give it a try soon :)
I love getting a new assignment video! Thank you so much for all your work in creating a community that is such a joy to be a part of!
I have no music background, and that explanation of "variation" in music by way of visual art made more sense to me than anything anyone has told me about music before.
Thank you! That was excellent.
An actual assignment video? Wow, it's been far too long.
I know! Have been plotting a return to some assignments for a while, but this felt like the right moment.
One time i took my best painting and attached it to a fence, near my home. It wasn't there the next day. I'll never know what happened to it, but imaging where it is now, is stimulating
I knew she was an amazing jazz singer and now I know she's an amazing visual artist. Thanks Art Assignment!
Could you do a video on procedural / generative art and how that fits into the art world? Thank you!
Ah! Day made! Cecile Mclorin Salvant is my favorite jazz musician and I've seen her visual work on insta but always wanted more info. Super interesting, thanks!
Art assignment have inspired me to make more art then ever before.
This is really awesome and the artist seems like such a cool, genuine person!
I love her work!

Another great video! Thank you Art Assignment ☺️
This channel is so empowering and inspiring! Please keep going
You are an amazing artist! Whatever you do is outstanding, I love your doodles and the finished embroidery.
Yay, a new assignment! (Does a happy dance) :)
the animations replacing Sarah are so cool! it's really surprising to see what looks like a standard video call and then be reminded of how edited a medium it is
I love your glasses!!!
For the first time in 30 years this has got me wondering..."Now where's that ding-dang embroidery hoop!?"
👏👏👏💕
nice〰〰♥♠
Assignments are back!
This reminds me of a traditional Indian art form where human figures or village scenes are made out of simple shapes in a silhouette or mud colour.
Reminds me of Wiki's Oofie album cover art
Her artwork gives me similar vibes to Lisa Hanawalt (main inspiration and art director of Bojack Horseman). And I love it.
Yes ~~~Tuco + Bertie! And one of my favorite animated music videos ~ Genius of Love by the TomTom club.
I'm also reminded of Khoisan art of South Africa .
Reminds me of warli art
Oh how I wish to be an elongated shape with wobbly arms 😌
i’m so deeply in love with her
I wish this channel could portray more black artists
can you do a video about how to get into the modern art world? I was watching your "I could do this" video and the common response "you didn't" I felt that a lot of people must have did it, it is just that their work did not become recognized. So if you did make an abstract or conceptual artwork how would you not just be dismissed as garbage and actually given a chance to express your work to the world like the artists in your videos?
I liked how each figure was both black and white as well as social distancing..
I don't do assignments...I'm a rebellious badboy
Getting Junji Ito vibes from those wiggly silhouettes
I find your work quite personal,I really like it. It relates to your other artistic side, too.
But I find the assignment naif. Maybe good for children, but not for an adult, not even a begginer...
How would you expand it? I love the embroideries, and the fact that she determines that the figure is worth actually spending a long time on.
Why do you think art has to include conventional technical skill or be difficult to be “for” adults?
But art doesn't have to be hard to make, right? And it can be filled with meaning all the same.
I love how she made her outlines in black carton, so one side is white and the other is black. I interpret it as a message of equality. Maybe this is not even what she meant to do, but my point is that there could be much more to this assignment than cutting random shapes. It just depends on two people: the artist and the viewer. :)
