It was so cool to hear the different art terminology. Also, I liked how Sarah talked about the not-so-recent precedent for this assignment. I love how this show always has something new for us.
The part where she was saying how the fact that cavemen needed to make art means it's in our blood somehow really spoke to me, sometimes I feel like I should just give up on art and do something more directly "productive" for the world, but this gave me new confidence! Thank you :)
I love the way she draws, how she represents those basics of paintings and art. It is not as boring as it seems to be. I like them being black and white, and the different shades of the landscape, the ground and the sky.
This is the type of person who would be amazingly successful at anything she set her mind at doing. So much talent,Good luck Robyn in all your future endeavors.
OMG towards the end she was looking at the picture and putting cut outs on the paper, and that reminded me of the Power Point art I used to make as a kid. I'd get these images of landscapes and put in gifs all around to make it look like all the characters in the GIFs were hanging out in there. The GIFs weren't square images, they were just characters moving around in no background, so it really was fun putting them around.
I finally edited and uploaded my response to "Meet in the Middle." My friend and I met in the middle of our school building, singing alternating phrases of the "Epitaph of Seikilos," the oldest complete song known to us. I know what you all are thinking, that I stole Hank's idea, but we actually filmed this a month ago (so he stole ours). :p It's at Meet in the Middle - Ancient Greek Edition (or search "Meet in the Middle - Ancient Greek Edition." It's also on my tumblr, along with my and fellow commenter S. E. Vidrio's response to "Never Seen, Never Will." www.tumblr.com/blog/nadiact1000
Coming from a high school senior, I haven't been this intrigued about learning information in a while! You're making me more excited to go to art school next year! I look forward to doing these projects over the summer, even if they're simple, at least I'm creating art and I could expand with it!
It's really interesting to learn about the Figure Ground Relationship and to learn some important basics about art and painting. However, I must admit that I don't really understand the "psychological" part... Where exactly does the psychological aspect come into this assignment? Will still try and do this of course...
This will be fun... I have some old work that would fit it but this (for me) is about making new work... :D though I am 1/2 done assignment 5... so need to finish that first!!
this seems great! and i love her work, especially the last landscape with the people falling off the cliff looks amazing! very excited to do this one! :)
Thanks for making these videos. I'm learning so much about art from you guys...and I enjoy 'getting to know' the artists too. Makes this abstract subject a little more real for me and a lot more accessible.
In the final painting she showed, i would say that the "ground" is actually the air and space that the cliff and people is on, which would make the ground/cliff part of the "figures" rather than the "ground".
I don't know if what I'm about to ask is too impossible, but I would really love to see the episodes with subtitles. I would love to share it with spanish people, but I'm afraid most of them will not understand what's being said. Of course I can explain it to them, but I'm sure it's better to hear this kind of episodes without my interpretation of it in the way. Of course this is just an idea. Great channel and amazing episodes, thanks for sharing!
As someone who also considers themself to be a landscape artist (primarily using photography), i'm looking forward to doing this! It'll be a change to do a form of psychological landscape without using a camera and editing at a computer for days at a time. Kinda wish it wasn't just drawing though so I could show off my newest work as it kinda fits!
If you look up the photographer Glenda Lissette she paints on top of photos, not intricately, but just to enhance them. Maybe you could do something in the same vein!
5:23 Why does man create? Men have struggled against time, against decay, against destruction, against death. Some have cried out in torment and agony. Some have fought with arrogance and fierce pride. Some challenged the gods, matching power with power. Some have celebrated life. Some have burned with faith. Some have spoken in voices we no longer understand. Some have spoken eloquently. Some have spoken inarticulately, some haltingly; some have been almost mute. Yet among all the variety of human expression, a thread of connection-a common mark-can be seen: that urge to look into oneself and out at the world and say, “This is what I am. I am unique. I am here. I am!” - From the 1968 short film, "Why Man Creates" by Saul Bass and Mayo Simon
I visited Valon pont d'Arc once, but the cave paintings are not accessible to the public. However, they have built a neat reconstruction of the real cave.
I liked the other Art Assignments because they were based more on personal experience as opposed to your ability to draw, since that is something I was never able to improve on after the age of 12. However, I am still going to attempt this even if it ends up looking very juvenile and messy.
At the surface, yes this one looks like it's about drawing. But like she said, you could paint it. Because I'm not so good at either of those things, I was thinking something like creating a collage. Like maybe taking a photograph, and then imposing figures onto it afterwards or something. I can't draw or paint, but I can cut and paste pictures with the best of them :P
Google defines Psychological as: of, affecting, or arising in the mind; related to the mental and emotional state of a person. To me this means that its made up... you are not going somewhere and drawing what you see... you are drawing something completely from your mind.
There are a few reasons we're calling it that: 1) the landscape doesn't have to be a physical place like a mountain scape, it can be imaginary or psychological like the inside of someone's brain, etc., 2) Robyn discusses how setting the horizon line can effect the overall mood of a drawing, and 3) you're asked to imbue your figures with human-like characteristics, as if even a desk can have a psychology. Does that make sense?
The Art Assignment That definitely makes sense and helps a lot. I had expected it to take a different turn based on the title, but with that explanation I totally get it. Thanks!
It took me a little while to finish this one because I chose an emotionally challenging topic. Is it ok if I share the link here?: The Art Assignment 6: Psychological Landscape for Pregnancy
I really like this assignment. I feel that O'Neil is helping people who maybe haven't had a substantial art education to feel confident identifying and using these elements to effect. That is a skill that applies to both art making and viewing. I also liked it for reminding me so much of my old studio mate Erin Hinz. erinhinz.com Sorry that the link wouldn't paste.
#theartassignment The Art Assignment Finally finished this one, my wife and I make a landscape and add figures, then swap them and add our figures into the other one. The results became a bit more meaningful than we expected. Take a look at it on our blog: davidandlucy.blogspot.co.uk/
Cary Cocuzzi It depends what you want to create, but say, you make a painting, then you can tape yourself holding the painting and explaining things about the painting, or use a scan or photograph of your painting as the visual and you can edit your voice under it in the voice track with an editing programme. (Personally, if I were to do a painting, I'd choose tumblr or twitter to post it.)
LittleWhiteLy I did a drawing, posted it on fb with the hashtag-theartassignment in the same box as the link, as well as in the comment-box just to be safe (because I'm not really sure what I'm doing) and I don't have a video camera and I didn't really provide a description. Lol do you think they're going to get it?
You could try collageing instead. I had a classmate in art school who did an entire series of colleges with National Geographic photos. Old magazines are supper cheap at Half Price Books.
As a traditional artist, you don't know how happy I am with this assignment :)
Me to! Especially being a landscaper myself.
It was so cool to hear the different art terminology. Also, I liked how Sarah talked about the not-so-recent precedent for this assignment. I love how this show always has something new for us.

Robyn O'Neil would make a fantastic art teacher.
I wonder if she's ever taught art? She seems like a natural at it.
I love the way she draws, how she represents those basics of paintings and art. It is not as boring as it seems to be. I like them being black and white, and the different shades of the landscape, the ground and the sky.
I liked Robyn's laugh at the falling figures.
Robyn O'Neil, totally my favorite artist that we've met so far. Thanks for introducing us, the Art Assignment!
Sarah's explanations are stellar.
"I wanna drink water and coffee, eat turkey sandwiches and look at landscapes"
Advice for life.
And I'm not kidding.
This is the type of person who would be amazingly successful at anything she set her mind at doing.
So much talent,Good luck Robyn in all your future endeavors.
I met Robyn at the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, it's so fun to see an artist I've met on here!
I learned more about art in this 8 min video than I have in 35 years on the planet.
Robyn O'Neil would make a fantastic art teacher.

This episode is super great! Loved it. This is such a fantastic series, thank you so much for doing it!
This one is my favorite yet.
I agree, it's my favourite too!

Okay, I just read the comment further down below, and the explanation really helps :-)
This will be fun... I have some old work that would fit it but this (for me) is about making new work... :D though I am 1/2 done assignment 5... so need to finish that first!!
I saw a lot of her work at the Des Moines art center, I loved it!
this seems great! and i love her work, especially the last landscape with the people falling off the cliff looks amazing! very excited to do this one! :)
As soon as I've got better time I'm going to do this one!
Yay for Robyn O'Neil!!!!
Thanks for making these videos. I'm learning so much about art from you guys...and I enjoy 'getting to know' the artists too. Makes this abstract subject a little more real for me and a lot more accessible.
I love the energy of this woman

Love this one! I've already got a lot of ideas and I can't wait to do it :)

I'm sure you could do something with photography.
Maybe use one of your photographed landscapes and superimpose drawn characters on top?
If you look up the photographer Glenda Lissette she paints on top of photos, not intricately, but just to enhance them. Maybe you could do something in the same vein!
Time for one of my classic crayon drawings.
She is my new favourite artist.

how does the word Psychological apply?
I must have missed it.
Awesome, Robyn O'neil you're fantastic!
She has the best shirt ever.
Woohoo! Something that doesn't make me think! I can finally just work normally and not have to worry about anything else.
I visited Valon pont d'Arc once, but the cave paintings are not accessible to the public. However, they have built a neat reconstruction of the real cave.
Sounds like a blast
Awesome! Awesome! You have a nice energy about you and your voice is magical.
now here's a prompt I can get behind! totally looking forward to this! ^_^
Very nice art work, Robyn.

Great ideas! I am doing this with friends and kids this Thanksgiving!!
Sarah, your glasses are fab xx
Great episode. I'm interested to see the things that come out of this.
I want to work on this right now! Too bad I can't stay home from work today. At least it's almost the weekend!
Who does the animated segments for this show? They are always so very well-done!
To everyone asking questions starting with "Can you", Yes! Yes you can! It's your life!
Thanks, J. Van der Linden! A mighty fine point you've made.
you're amazing, thank you very much for doing these videos
I'm not really good at drawing/ painting etc. but I'm definetely gonna try this :)
I love this!
That is awesome work
Oooooooooooooo I like this one a lot!
Yeah, Iowa!
I keep meaning to do all of these but just not finding the time :(
The little men remind me of the business men in the Adventure Time episode "Business Time" (s.1 e.8). Also, IOWA!!!!
Why 'psychological' landscape?
Google defines Psychological as: of, affecting, or arising in the mind; related to the mental and emotional state of a person.

I think I'll try this assignment, but with some of my photography. I usually like to capture landscapes. Is that okay?
It took me a little while to finish this one because I chose an emotionally challenging topic. Is it ok if I share the link here?: The Art Assignment 6: Psychological Landscape for Pregnancy
Do I have to use paper? Can I use a digital medium? I'll answer yes - going to ignore step one.
Moraine Lake!
I want to drink water and grape juice, eat breakfast croissants, and sculpt clay tiles that tell stories
Is there a web site or tag on Instagram or something's where you can see people own art assignments and post your own?
Cool! Haven't an artistic bone in my body.
Can we do a digital drawing? I don't have any way of scanning or uploading a traditional drawing from paper, like the instructions say.
7:13 long live the king
this woman creates these huge, dense drawings laboring with bic mechanical pencils like you used in school
This may be a bit difficult for me, since I can't really draw....but lets see what I can do.
Where do we upload it? Does it have to be a video? Or can we just post a picture of it somewhere using the #.
You can post it to the social media site of your choice with hashtags. It doesn't need to be a video.
Lemmings don't fall off cliffs!

What is the music at the end?
And don't break the law.
What happened to Benjy and Artie?????????????
How many nerdfighter channels? Seriously, I want a complete list.
Here's my assignment! danz.geeksdanz.org/wp/?page_id=647
Wait, how do you upload an assignment?
Post it to tumblr, twitter, youtube, etc and tag it with #theartassignment
Liz M How do I post it on youtube?

Cary Cocuzzi I have zero experience with how well hashtags work on facebook, but I hope they do!

Crash Course Art History, feat. Sarah Urist Green!
This is kind of like creating a still of a custom Gmod map
"It could be... Iowa!"
Basically this is a figure in space.
#darkhotdogs
I wonder who the 2 a-holes are that decided it was good idea to down vote this.
I wonder this, too. And now there are 5 of them. With 1,091 likes, however, I'll take it.
lmao Hitler didn't learn to use figure and ground
What if I can't draw to save my life?
Then you don't draw to do anything, but just to have fun. A blue blob can have human characteristics, if you can imagine it to!
You could try collageing instead. I had a classmate in art school who did an entire series of colleges with National Geographic photos. Old magazines are supper cheap at Half Price Books.

Great tip. Thanks!
inspired! i made this!

What happened to her nose?
JCB She always had that nose.
