- In today's Win-Win episode I meet with Boyan Slat. Boyan is the founder and CEO of the Ocean Cleanup, the famous organization that's trying to rid our waterways of plastic for good. I ask him why plastic has become such a problem, the difference between effective and ineffective regulation (ahem Plastic Straw Ban!), the importance of mindset when solving hard problems, and of course, his relationship with competition.

AMAZING conversation. What an incredible guy, so full of optimism, and he actually acts on it… His little speech at the end about the feats of this species was beautiful, I could never have so eloquently put it like that on the spot. Going about my day with a renewed sense of hope ❤
Great interview!! Great job doing everything for our planet!! Thank you!!😊
Level headed caring and action in the world. This is what the world needs more of!
Great interview, Liv. You are quickly establishing yourself as one of the top practitioners in this format.
Beautiful guest, very inspiring! Thank you!
Amazing interview with so many nuggets of wisdom. Would have to rewatch this to pick up concepts of ethics, problem solving and just how to be optimistic in general. I think i can listen to Boyan in a meditation app. Would love to see him back on the show in a couple of years.
You are doing the podcast thing very well! Keep having big thinkers and doers on!
Ty. When I learned of this project at the developmental stage, I was so hopeful that someone was trying to something and hopeful that it would be successful. Although the scope of the existing garbage patch and rate of growth seemed insurmountable, I considered that old axiom: "how do u eat an elephant, one bite at a time," and I encouraged and supported OC to start biting asap. So exciting to see the progress

Nice Idea 💐💐💐💐💐 and Hard work
I'm not sure what to do with the collected material - Could it be used as a durable building material?
Please interview David Sloan Wilson and anyone of the Max Neef foundation. The most effective way and the only way to significantly improve the world is to raise awareness about fundamental human needs. That is as long as most people don't know what human beings require to become and stay mentally and physically healthy so that they not only are not a burden or a danger to society but actually are beneficial to society.
I really enjoyed your discussion 23:45 about philosophy! Boyan's approach is probably one of the best examples of the "Win-Win Utilitarianism Infinite Games Mindset" in action, I have come across so far. Research has found that SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) antidepressants actually make people neuro/bio-chemically less utilitarian/consequentialist and more deontological.
One flaw. You needed more encouragement to support OC and provide info on how to do so. I have my OC sunglasses made from the recycled plastic, and they r great high quality glasses
saw u on lex
The ocean Integrity group is the only organization that have been successful in this space. They have renowned over 3 billion pounds of plastic waste over the last two years also.
The Bo-Bo show
You know what gets me? That we even are having a discussion about cleaning up the mess we primates have made of all our waterways, the ocean and seas. We've quite literally turned this paradise Earth into our toilet. It's quite an accomplishment, isn't it? I have to ask. What truly intelligence species does something like that? The mess, that is, not the talking about it. Ever get the impression that boy the landlord is gonna be pissed when it comes around to inspect what we've been doing to the place? Yeah, me too.
Focus, people, FOCUS. And yeah that's me yelling. It's time to wake up to the reality that ours is a terrarium. Get it? If we want to continue in this merry existence, we need to better comport our habits, our ways. There's still time, but is getting short. So time to freakin' focus. It's not all about Me, it's about WE!
John~
hMmm... workable
Majority of plastic in oceans are from fishing gear. So biggest thing to do is eat something else than what comes from the ocean.
realistically... that's not going to happen.
it will whether we want to or not, since the fish will die out from over fishing and/or climate change@@diederikvandedijk
70% of the world population lives within a 100km from the coastline. Fish is a major food source to feed 8 billion people and especially in poorer areas of the world it might be the only source of fresh meat.
Based Boyan, ACTUALLY doing the work. Instead of the "elected officials".
Why don't this guys' boats sink!? Boyancy.
First :)
Liv, loved you on Lex. Talk more about a.i., please. Focus on a.i., please. Only 50 likes on this video as I write this. Interview Sam, Elon, sweet talk Ilya into an interview......
please.
We need more women making content about a.i. right now. There are some, but they don't think like you.
I know it’s annoying that Coca Cola broke his record. But aren’t these guys also huge donors of ocean cleanup.
My kind of environmentalist. Why are they so rare when the virtue signalling pious are so common.
Take a guess why...
Liv, you still haven't had kids at your age? Hurry up or as a woman you'll fall into a deep depression due to your maternal instincts going unsated. You'll be miserable without a baby to cuddle and snuggle with.

The choice of having a child and the time for it should better be left to any womam. The decision is a part of her personal life so it should be respected as her personal choice.

@@dhurjatigautam4931 Bad choices shouldn't be respected.
Like the bad choice to harass women in their place of contribution to the world, about their not having kids yet?
Also have you considered that not all childlessness is a choice and your pressuring of the topic could hit someday hit someone infertile and in grief about it?
I was out to dinner one night, a waiter brought me a straw I did not ask for, I immediately called 911 and had him arrested and the restaurant shut down even though the store across the street was being looted and nobody cared. I then went out, climbed over the homeless tents with people crapping on the sidewalk and shooting up and voted for a democrat just to make sure passing out straws would never happen again.
