Great video. I remember the longer we stayed in the field my sense of smell would get so turned up. I once was talking to another platoon leader and realizing there was something different about him; I realize after being in the woods for nine days straight, in 90+ degree heat without showers, I could smell he had just returned from the barracks and that he had snuck a shower. He smelled clean from feet away. Also like you said once on patrol my platoon located an OPFOR position because they were smoking.
Old story from Vietnam War that the VC could smell Americans because Americans smelled like butter from all the dairy Americans eat. Dont know howntrue that is but that's what I was told.
@@ms.annthrope415 Just like westerners can identify a distinct smell from indians, east asians, blacks and arabs, they can identify white people by the smell. I've had an east asian telling me how the first thing they noticed of my country was the cheese smell at the airport, right after landing.
The stories of smelling the enemy are not stories, this includes tobacco and alcohol, both of which are foreign odors in nature. p.s. Don't dry you cammies with dryer sheets either ( - :
The food you eat will give you away too. My Uncle told me when he was a LRRP in Nam he'd eat fish, rice and other food the natives ate a few days before going on a mission if possible. When you sweat you smell of the food you ate. Captured NVA & VC said they smelled our men by the food they many times
Your videos are getting tighter, denser and more scripted. I like it. Please keep up the good work. It makes me feel like I'm getting 90% of the *useful* military training in 5% of the time at 0 cost. Not to mention saving joints from 10+ mile patrols wearing 90 lbs of gear.
I absolutely love these infantrymen’s guides! I learn so much information that I otherwise wouldn’t have even considered. Excellent video as always, Keep up the good work!
I'm only an airsofter but I've learned some useful tips from these types of videos. If I'm not using my ghillie suit in game, I always carry a few rubber bands with me, they can be put on your arms and you can stuff vegitation into them, helping break up the shape of the shoulders. That and some vegitation on your head and rifle is a great makeshift ghillie. I'm in the process of making a ghillie net I can roll up and keep in a pouch, then it can be unrolled and I can go prone underneath it, to help mask my position. Great content, Bren
Awesome pros and (the many) cons. The one thing I learned young was that failure is not an option; but, it is a damned fine teacher. Doing something wrong (and living through it and not getting anyone else dispatched) teaches you at least two things. One, what not to do. Two, what to do right. And, in my case, three, having enough gained training to train someone else. Well done my friend! Old dogs can learn new tricks! Thank you.
As an IDF soldier in the past, and still in reserve active duty. That was almost exactly the stuff we learned at training. Some adds: People chose the first magazine they will use, covered it with foam and camo fabric. this way its not making noise if the magazine hit stuff like rocks or while you climb things and the weapon dangle around and hit things.

I believe their is also a 3rd option for camouflaging the face. A face viel. Now, a lot of units don’t allow it, but during some experimental operations we found that the face viel made of a mesh cloth painted in any pattern does well and doesn’t necessarily cut off your vision as much as you think and it was very effective when I’ve used it.
I have to say, this is my favorite method for hunting. I can't stand faceshields or masks that cut off my breathing, but a veil is very unobtrusive and works well. You can also sew them onto any standard baseball cap easily. I'm sure there are a lot of reasons why they're not used in the field, but for hunting, they're really comfy and effective.
I miss this shit. Thankfully, since COVID-related societal attitude adjustments, circles of friends and acquaintances (living in oblivious comfort) have been approaching me more about ... things. And it is absolutely exciting and motivating to have blossoming interest and an audience to teach this craft. Brent, you do a fantastic job putting it in video format. It helps keep the attention of the younger types.
Great video. If your uniform has pockets on the arms and legs, you can stuff natural materials like twigs or grass there. If you put long grass in the upper pockets on your arms, they can partially cover your head. Also it's good to jump up and down couple of times before you go out, so you can hear and eliminate any metal-on-metal rattle of your gear.
Tactical skinny Jean's? WTF!?! I didn't know there was such a thing. Great video! In my opinion you made a video here of such good quality it could be used at the infantry training school. AATW! Infantry leads the way! 👍👍
2 things, "A walking Blackhawk catalog". Besides being funny as hell is also absolutely true. I have seen some guys that think if they have some free PALS webbing, they feel the need to attach a pouch. If you attach a pouch, you're going to put shit in it. Keep your kit slim and trim without compromising ammo loadout and other critical items. The ass n balls comment is absolutely spot on. I think it was Ivory soap we used back in the day that had no scent/odor to it. If you use baby wipes to 3 spot yourself, use unscented baby wipes. Another great video. Keep em coming. This is good training and good tactical intel.
Una vez mas un excelente trabajo, y muy buena aportacion, el idioma es un poco complicado, pero, poco a poco voy comprendiendo, los veo una y otra vez, y asi voy aprendiendo.
No crap, I got shoved to be a 11 now that I’m in wpns it’s hard to find another 11, so I have to learn from vids like this and go on my gut. So far this is the best video out there, just solid work. Keep these vids rolling
I am Subscribed! Everything else on RUclips is a bunch of Shenanigans. This right here here is very edifying, especially to myself a Son of a Marine that was Med DQ'd from enlistment and missed out on Boot Camp. I still wish to serve and protect my Country if the day comes where I am needed. Thank you, Sir. SEMPER FIDELIS. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
You're not kidding about the effectiveness of a camouflaged weapon. I remember hunting with my father one time when he had just covered his rifle in camo tape. At the end of the day, he had left his spot to come find me so we could go back to the lodge. I saw him from a long way off, but didn't see his rifle. The whole time, I watched him and wondered what he had done with his rifle. He was almost within speaking distance and I almost asked him "Where's your rifle?" when I finally saw that he was carrying it like usual. I couldn't see the rifle for the life of me with that camo pattern on it!
A couple of tips: try to keep your camo pattern as consistent as possible, this includes your face, the more you camo matches over your entire body the harder it is to see you. The brim of your boonie hat and helmet create a shadow that is easily distinguishable from the rest of you, your boonie hat brim should be trimmed back as far as possible to less'n that shadow. The helmet should have a camo cover that over-laps the edges and should be cut in an irregular pattern (all the way around)and not straight across the brim, back and sides. Additional tip: the cotton poly blend fabric can be waterproofed for a extended period of time by rubbing a non-scented candle into the fabric and melting with a hairdryer or worst case a camp fire. The fabric does become slightly stiffer and may increase heat retention,to avoid this just apply to the neck, upper back and shoulder area as well as your boonie hat and helmet cover.
I remember doing a counter recon position and I smelled a cigarette. I flipped my nods down and sure enough a squad was down the hill. I didn't hear them because of the wind but I sure could smell that cigarette blowing right up to our position. Great, spot on video BTW.
Thanks for this series. Once we start going back to drill I will probably send these out to my new platoon just to prepare them to some basic concepts and hopefully reduce training time. Apparently camouflage and some basic patrol concepts are not taught as basic training anymore, even to combat engineers (heck they don't teach iron sights anymore and shoot with an M68). Some of us old guys that were in before 9/11 have a leg up when preparing for near-peer conflicts.
@@Brent0331 we did a joint training with the national guard, active duty, Marines, SF, all sorts of stuff. The BN we were with told us we had to walk around in full kit all the time because we could have "enemy air assault" at anytime. They also made us sleep in GP mediums on the edge of a field instead of in our fighting positions like we planned. I was working as a range safety a few years ago and some kid was having a terrible time zeroing. I was trying to coach him and after about 20 rounds he told me he had never fired with iron sights before and had nonidea how to do it. I didn't know what to say.
You undeniably have the best information for the basics of infantry warfare and camouflage I've been watching you since I was a kid and I'm glad to see you're still making videos
Excellent video! Brent you absolutely do cammoflage better than anyone else on RUclips! After watching your cammoflage effectiveness videos in the past. I bought a bunch of Multicam, MARPAT Woodland, and desert, and the Navy's new Digital Woodland! They all fit into every environment and season in the North American woods! I use them for hunting and camping. I must say that from everything I've bought. Multicam is definitely my favorite! Thank you for all the great information and knowledge you share!!🤜🤛🇺🇸🇺🇸
They will leave the internet up to gather intel, just like they do now. Study the entire timeline of the Arab Spring Uprising and the regimes that took down the web, cell signals, etc. only caused those on the fence to choose sides. Be weary of phishing channels, of which this is not one.
Great presentation! I wouldn't be surprised if years down the road these will be used on both recruit depots as a compliment for their appropriate Field Manuals. I can only imagine if your Hat came across your material, a smile would definitely come to his face as you continue to represent your brother's in arms and the Corps with excellence!
Thanks brother. They actually don't cover much infantry related material in recruit training. Most of that is taught at SOI. I designed these videos specifically for junior Marines/Soldiers and NCOs.
We as tankers learned about camo and smoking along with light at night with live examples and we also had to camo our steel pot helmets which also served as your shaving washing sink
First of all thank you for your service and also for sharing all this knowledge in such a no nonsense manner. I'd love to see a cold wet dogshit weather gear video. Tempurate winter conditions with rain etc. Cold and miserable. Thanks again!
You should do a video about night vision when to use it, how it should be stored when not in use, types of NODs useful in different situations, what to expect when using NODs, different applications for Night Vision, and personal reccomendations.
Awesome, informative videos. I appreciate that you're not high-speed, shooting range style. But field op and movement. People often forget that the world isnt like a shooting range.
I will be downloading this asap. I'm afraid this info will be very helpful in the not to distant future. That aside, man Brent you're like Marine Force Recon out there man!!
That's the thing brother, the stuff I'm showing here is nothing high speed. All this should be what basic Infantryman Marines/Soldiers should be doing. Nothing special about proper camouflage, it's something every grunt should do.
There are many products marketed for deer hunting that will mitigate your smell. Wipes and spray on. It would be prudent to apply this to operators who are going in harm's way. They don't weigh much, and are really effective at concealing your olfactory signature.
During Iraq deployment 2(Bdad 2006-2008) given that the US Army issues the ACUs in UCP, I spray painted my rhino mount primer gray and a flat tan/ sand. Also did my bayonet on my body armor. One of the MAJs on the team commented on my camo painting. I explained I was in LRS in early mid 90s. Then 2nd BDE 1st ID rolled in 4 months later and damned it I wasn't a trend setter. On a different note, for helmets you can always use the old "7th ID Manchu Du". Think Just Cause in Panama. Personally, I would like to see the US goes to the mitznefet helmet cover. (Think chef Boy R Dee hat) just my 2 cents.
When I was in the Army I used black shoe Pauline’s stay out of the shadows an never be backlit to this day I still go old school think listening learn sounds of the environment will always tell you listen to the night feel he forces a round you GOD Bless
Is that for preventing or reducing SWIR signature? I read thats what it was used for when i was looking for IR solutions. Do you mean for the same use or what is any other use? What do you mean by tiger repellant?
@Feldgrau Fox It can also apparently be used for IR evasion, needs to be treated onto an IR insulation suit. webbook.nist.gov/cgi/cbook.cgi?ID=C52645531&Mask=80
Another way to camouflage helmet is to add scrim to it, it can esily be adapted to changing seasons by adding more strips of diffirent colours, such as white during winter.

Awesome, thanks for watching and commenting brother.
I expected crotch rot to be referenced or mentioned.

Yep. Good stuff

Some adds:
People chose the first magazine they will use, covered it with foam and camo fabric.
this way its not making noise if the magazine hit stuff like rocks or while you climb things and the weapon dangle around and hit things.

Outstanding work, Grunt. Rock on.
Thanks.
Just an honest 11B's opinion.
Can you stand having that on and over your face for entire days at a time?
I miss this shit. Thankfully, since COVID-related societal attitude adjustments, circles of friends and acquaintances (living in oblivious comfort) have been approaching me more about ... things. And it is absolutely exciting and motivating to have blossoming interest and an audience to teach this craft. Brent, you do a fantastic job putting it in video format. It helps keep the attention of the younger types.
Thanks brother.
Thanks for watching and commenting.

Awesome stuff!!! Keep the great info coming!!!
Thanks! Will do!
Thank you for your hard work and attention to detail in your videos! God bless you, sir!
Thanks
What a beautiful compilation of nature and scenic locations
I remember doing a counter recon position and I smelled a cigarette. I flipped my nods down and sure enough a squad was down the hill. I didn't hear them because of the wind but I sure could smell that cigarette blowing right up to our position. Great, spot on video BTW.
Nice, thanks for sharing.

Awesome brother. Yup couldn't agree more on the near peer threat. We need to get back to preparing for it.

Great video as always! Being active duty Army I knew all of these, but it's definitely great to have a refresher. Many thanks!

A scrim is identical to camo netting
