The Beasties are world champion shit talkers. It’s part of the reason we all love them. This was back in the day though before groups started to take all that stuff seriously. With the Beasties it was tongue in cheek. It was comedy.
I was born in the last year and 5 days of the 80s I always said I should have been born in the 70s and rocked out in the 80s. That must have been a great time to be alive. 😊
The 80s were a great time in history to be alive. There was no hate/racism like you see today. We all mixed it up together. Hip hop and rap were just emerging into their own genre, the music was positive, and the Artists were talented. Not the crap you hear today all about drugs, drinking, disrespecting women, killing people, etc...
No Sleep Til Brooklyn was a reference to No Sleep Til Hammersmith by Motorhead. Everyone loved Motorhead. Eight Days A Week was a Beatles song, everyone knew the reference at the time. The guitar player doing the solo was Kerry King from Slayer. Slayer was a thrash metal band who were the only non-rap band on Def Jam at the time. King played on this, and Public Enemy sampled them for their song She Watch Channel Zero?!
And then there was a whole raft of metal/rap crossover collabs that were genre bending and brought together two underground scenes in a glorious cultural melting pot. Rappers were getting into thrash and skate metal, metalheads were getting into hiphop. Good times. As PE(and Anthrax) said... "Yeeeeaaahhhh bring tha noize!"
The Volkswagen emblem he was wearing around his neck was essentially to make fun of the people that had been wearing Mercedes emblems around their necks around that time. He thought that was silly, so he wore something even sillier. Their entire catalog is indeed worth checking out. One of the most important groups in history. A lot of their videos are funny and creative. This was from their first album from 1986, same as The New Style. Fight For Your Right is another one from that album that you shouldn’t for a couple of reasons. One, it was their first big hit. And two, for their last album before MCA passed away they made another video called Fight For Your Right Revisited that is supposed to take place right after the Fight For Your Right video. It is a half hour long and contains an insane number of celebrities making cameos. It is actually for the first single off that last album, which is a song called Make Some Noise, but there are two versions of videos for it. The longer version with all the celebrities is found by searching for Fight For Your Right Revisited. It is about half an hour long but is definitely worth watching. If you search for Make Some Noise you’ll find the version that’s edited down to be a more normal length for a music video, but the longer one is the one to watch.
Yeah, there’s also another story though… in the 80s & 90s them that did it, would rock the car hood of the car the literally just boosted, or at least that was a thing in and around New York… back in the day anyway
My little brother won 2 tickets from the radio in 1986 to the RUN DMC / Beastie Boys concert at the Houston Astrodome, and he was cool enough to take me, knowing what a fan I was of both groups. Freakin' awesome.
@@coryholden666 Most people do, but for different reasons. lol The concert was the best, and could never happen again for at least 3 reasons - 1) The Astrodome was destroyed a long time ago, 2) Jam Master Jay is dead, 3) MCA is dead
@StephenLWilson sounds like it was. I did a little tour of the Astrodome when I was a kid. Run remembers it more like they were these annoying white dudes that hung around the studio and took up their time with questions, so they gave the Boys a song to shut them up. Probably a little tongue in cheek, but probably also a little bit true.
This song is SO FIRE. Top hit on this album. Fun fact. They were a punk rock group before they became a hip hop group. They never got big on the punk scene. These guys are so different in their flow it just straight vibed. Their first tour with Run Dmc and LL was one of the BEST hip hop tours to date. These dudes were on a different level.
The Beasties boys around this time were getting banned from cities, and thrown out of countries for their "vulgar" stage antics and lyrics. Ad Rock was arrested in England and deported after throwing beer at fans. DEF JAM insisted they portray the "frat boy" party, delinquent , minor criminal type. Being 20ish, they were happy to have fun at first, but they were not happy with the image and abandoned it at the end of the LICENSE TO ILL tour in 1987.
The Beastie Boys have a sound that holds up to this day. Old School Hip Hop with that Slacker Rock sound. Well done my guy. Yeah that's right I do food reviews while on the toilet. The diversity in music is epic with BBoys. You can have 4+ different beats in 1 song and the transitions are great, Just like the mic drop. They were very creative with how they produced and integrated the music types. This is what made them different from other bands.
One thing most don't know; they played instruments as well. MCA bass, Ad Rock guitar, and Mike D drums. Not like they were SRV and Double Trouble but they could play a whole set- that's how they started.
Early rap had a lot of diversity in the crowds in a lot of cities - my favourite local club had 2 nights a week of punk & 1 of rap, & we hit all 3 nights: Goth rap fans of every description enjoying good music!
