His greatest work. It is the finest self portrait to ever grace a canvas. His darling was the ultimate expression of his art in that time. Knowing that he was being led by industry towards a future that he did no longer belong to. The painting of nature and architecture, light and dark, souvenirs of lands unseen. All to be replaced by photography and technology. Passing silently over still waters to a romantic end. Turner captured perfectly what could not be seen. Feelings of emotions through the eyes of his soul.
My favourite artist of all. The first time I saw one of his paintings, and read the notes, I thought "yes, this is the real thing." It might not be his most visually spectacular work, but for me his most iconic: Rain, Steam and Speed.
There are so many artist that are well known through out time can you image not knowing any artist every time I discover an artist it's like eating a new meal that stimulates the senses this is how I feel about turner. I have a meal every time I learn about more and more artist I discover and this is just past artist. I'm an artist I want to be just like them. I can't help but giving credit to the creator of heaven and earth people don't realize or forget that lookng at the tree's the flower and people who created all these wonderful works it's the creator, we just copy his work. This is just being humbly honest and in awe.
I like Constable & Tuner, they've inspired me with my art. I find it fascinating that Constable didnt like Tuner as a person - but admired his work. There's an old saying never meet your heroes.
Excellent Documentary. You can tell this was produced by the Beebs. The pains and the lengths they went to, to not mention the most important event that would rock the world that also happened to start in 1775.
that connection between turners painting and electromagnetism is a bit far fetched. the documentary, however, is brilliant! admiration for turner from germany
oh God, first 'artist' featured is Tracey Emin. Still, a fantastic documentary into one of the true Greats. I wonder, did Turner make his own bed or leave it a prize winner?
Dear Team, thank you for this great documentary. As I am currently working myself on a documentary about Turner. Would it be possible to 1-2 minutes of the video material in this Documentary? Thank you for your answer in advanve!
I don't understand the notion of technology being "unnatural". Humans are a product of nature. Hence all we do is a result of nature as well. Is a termite mound unnatural? Or a birds nest? Or a coral reef?
By creating order on one side, we create disorder on the other (entalphy). Humanity created technology and all the materials came from nature, which we have to partly destroy. Our existance happened naturally, under laws of physics and biology, and you can say that everything, that is under laws of physics is natural. Than I agree. But nature is not self destructive, hence our technology existance, whichs condition is to destruct nature, is against natures will of staying at equilibrium, hence is unnatural.
A wonderful exposition of the artist and his work. However, it is a stretch to cast him as a painter of the Industrial Revolution. True, he does have steamships in his seascapes, but the Revolution is not his focus. Van Gogh had in his early work, dark portraits of worn down industrial workers, but one cannot ignore the Stary Night, Sunflowers, Irises, or the Bridge at Arles. The same is true for Turner.
Its all great until I read about his personal life. I never learn, to never read about the personal life of people I admire. In Turners case he sexually abused women around him. Of course his art is still great but now its over shadowed for me with knowing he was a man full of bad problems...
Genius is why over stating. And as fir yhe hidden images like face and bears. That's is just fanciful nonsense. Is early work was nice chocolate box stuff his late stuff just looks like he was believing his own press. And for perspective in later work. Lot at the fighting ship, favorite, . Paddles one direction, bow in another the sky and sea just messy. Same with yhe train painting. My wife has a half size copy and when I look at it it just grates on me. But art critics and pundits will talk. It's all they can do. And thats why we love fakers. It exposes nonsense and pretentiousness. I think Turner was laughing at everyone.

Thank you for posting this. I saw it at the pumphouse but I wasn't able to find out what it was called.
I know nothing of art but his paintings are real nice

Emin is hype over talent, the shallow over depth
Fantastic account.
Turner, the first Impressionist.
Such an underrated artist. One of the greatest of all time.
Underrated by whom? The general public? Not usually a good measure of quality, especially now.
lol....he is considered one of the greatest artists who has ever lived....he is second only to Rembrandt....in most peoples minds
Are you by any chance a ignorant american ?
Turner is Britain's greatest painter. WORLD FAMOUS .
What!...are you kidding? 😅
I am in the process of doing a Turneresque type painting, i am sick of relistic paintings , not that I did them but did impressionistic technique

You can see his ambitence in his eyes

Can I avoid being smacked on the head if I say Temeraire is an incredible work, however I don't get his greater body of work?
no
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I dont like Constable too messy, i dont lhink they shoukd be bunched together, though i do think he contributed to thr impressionists
”The worst painter of all times - Turner” Salvador Dali
Turner was Artists Artist.
If you can stomach Dali, you'd realize that was a compliment
