You’re very right about the psychological effects of the belt. I put one on the other for the first time in about 9 months and it made me feel like I could lift a lot more
No, of course not, but you do need a belt for reverse barbell curls in the power rack. (Just one more week until we start seeing a lot more of that. 😔 )
Thanks dude. I have never had an interest in wearing a belt but when I look around in the gym I see a lot of people wearing them and I start to wounded if I’m doing the wrong thing? This vid Has helped me stay beltless. Keep up the good work my man 👍

I've just started working as a removalist and i'm going to buy a belt for work. My lifting form is generally safe, however my shifts can be long and my form starts to slack as I become fatigued. So I think a lifting belt is the play.
Sounds like a good idea! I know a guy that works at a fast food store and he also always wears a llifting belt because he has to stand for such a long while.
Ahh another man of culture. You have not experienced the pleasures of life until you have worn your belt while taking a shit. Feels like you're wearing a damn jetpack

I've trained on and off for around 9 years now and have never put a belt on. Now that I'm increasing my workouts and looking to push strength higher, I'm interested in maximising the weight by finally deciding to wear a belt. This video came at the right time for me, thanks Alan, you answered all my questions very well as someone new to belts. Great video !

Last 4 years I've trained without a belt on my deadlift and start to inch closer and closer to a 3x BW deadlift (around 95kg BW). Things I've noticed the most is that my traps have buildt a bit, my abs are more developed.I have noticed also that my whole back is naturally completely straight when I deadlift, I don't even have to think about it. I haven't had any excessive lower back soreness at all, which I often had while using a belt. My squat has definately become a lot more solid, as in I feel like I have more control over the bar. I do use belt in squats. My height is 186cm (6'1 ish) and 95kg (209lbs ish), relatively lean.
Thanks for the 10% code. Have been considering using a belt for a while now and after a great conversation with a local coach, decided to take the plunge. Was shopping the Pioneer site recently and after hearing the discount code, committed just before your video signoff.
I don't think a belt should become a crutch but the studies clearly show that it actually improves core strength and core activation. I like to wear my belt 100% of the time but very loosely for many of my sets as a reminder to brace.
One thing that Allen didn’t touch on is if you do plan on competing in powerlifting the IPF requires you to have certain belts. The approved equipment list is on their website.
I have a short torso with some weird ribs, and a 10mm 3" (pioneer fit) is the best decision I ever made. I have never regretted anything less and this includes major life decisions, starting and ending different relationships, etc
Me too! I actually bought a 4” 10mm Pioneer belt and it really dug into my ribs so they let me exchange it for the 3”. Great company, great workmanship.
I was skeptical and stubborn about the belts thinking I was better off without one. Caved and finally bought one after my back started to feel funny post leg day. To my utter shock, the first time I put that thing on, it added 20lbs to my 3 rep max. Not only was I able to lift more weight, my back felt great and those were some of the prettiest heavy squats I had done in a minute.
@@bmstylee I think there far superior to anything else. The hide is better, the thickness, the layers and the lever is much better than the standard. The fact it is so easy to adjust for different events. Awesome belts
@@Skanker0302 I love their stuff. I was probably a bit harsh on the belt. It's a really well made belt. Once I broke mine in it worked like a dream. It took a good 2 months of use as well as rolling and unrolling to get it comfortable. They make the best knee sleeves I have used. I am curious why they only do a 13mm belt. They just rolled out 5mm sleeves.
10 mm Pioneer belt with PAL is the winner. I wear it almost all the time. Even when I don’t need it for a heavy pull, I wear it loose as a que for bracing. Especially coming back from surgery from a diverticulitis blow out.
Great video. I've learned over the last couple months to have multiples of everything just in case something breaks (Like a strap) or need to clean something (washing/drying knee or elbow sleeves), a second, different belt is next on the list. That's mostly for convenience. I lift at a buddies garage 85% of the time and would just like to leave my big 13mm belt there, instead of taking it with me every single time in case I lift at the commercial gym I am a member of. Probably going to end up with a 10 mm belt. When I first started wearing the 13mm belt, it was definitely in the way, so to speak, but I've since broken it in an works very well. Had a hard time getting into starting position on deadlift but it wasn't the belts fault, I was 30 lbs heavier than I am now. Well worth the investment in my case.
I've never worn a belt in my life and don't plan on it. I've gotten plenty strong without it and hey, I don't compete I just lift 5x a week because I love it so I dont see a reason to. Belts, wraps, all of that stuff. its all personal preference. Just get out there and lift yo
Some of the stuff is helpful later in life. I'm 40 and been lifting for over 20 years and have had doctors poking around my knee's inner workings 4 times. So a lot of the equipment is not needed but after enough time in the game it helps.
Whatever works for you is the thing. I use a lever belt for deads because I'm getting old and hurt myself early last year doing deads. If anything it's more of a psychological tool as I was nervous to do deads after injuring myself. I never used a belt before that and there is nothing wrong not using a belt.
@@seriousandy6656 haven't tried elbow supports yet. But my knee sleeves are a godsend. 4 surgeries has taken its toll. If you listen and I'm in between songs on the stereo you hear a lot of cracking and popping.
I agree with what you're saying but I have a personal history of several back injuries and have found that the belt gives me such an edge of extra comfort and decreased risk to suffering a repeat injury when doing heavy squats and deadlifts that it's a no-brainer that I need to be wearing one during those lifts
Couldn't agree more about General Leathercraft. Wish you'd have had that promotion a year or two back when I bought mine. Maybe I'll have to use some of my returned taxes i.e. "stimulus money" buying a new one.
I've got a nylon belt and the only times I actually use it is for max attempts. If I'm trying to get a new PR then yes, I wear it for squats/deadlifts, but for anything that isn't a max attempt, I rely on my core. It's a utility and an aid, but I don't like to use it as a crutch. It just gives me safety at high weight and helps me feel more confident in the weight.
I have a Velcro one and I go to a commercial gym. I like it cause when I’m done with my set I can loosen it up and walk around and do other workouts and don’t have to carry it around. I found wearing the belt it taught me how to press my abdominal muscles outward bracing against the belt which helped me with my form. Great video
Thank you. Have not been lifting long. Just recently sqatted 225 for 3x8 for the first time. First time I ever wore a belt. Lift went great no pain or discomfort. The second I took that belt off, I knew I had strained my back. Do not think I will be doing that again. Less weight and no belt from now on.
I was about to buy the Rogue Premium Ohio Lifting Belt after my cheap Reebok nylon one snapped during a lift. I am totally sold on the custom Untamed Strength with the Pioneer cut. I like to eat and drink and my abdomen fluctuates all the time. I just ordered it in large so we'll see how it goes! Excited about it!

Alan the belt at 19:45 is made for olympic weightlifters, it supports the back but still allows greater range of motion. But i agree with you it's bad choice for others.
Agreed they should only be used when doing maximal lifts where you notice your stabiliser muscles giving in and form starts to break down. Sometimes for people with poor mobility it can actually keep you in a more upright position or reversibly it may be an extreme disadvantage and put you in an even worse position. For me with a short torso and long arms and legs deadlifting with a belt allows me to pull myself under the bar in a much more stable position whilst bringing my scapular back and down at the same time allows me to create so much tension. Having it on the OHP allows for such a great energy transfer when i flex my hips during the OHP. For squats due to my long femur length and short torso it limits my ability to to ATG but can still hit paralell. Again this is just specific to me, my anatomy and training goals
ive purchased 7 belts from pioneer. no joke! like them so much that I buy them for all my lifting buddies or new lifters. can't wait till I hit a 600 lb deadlift because im gonna reward myself with another belt!
I have an inzer lever belt and I’m stuck between settings (1 setting is a little too loose and 1 setting is too tight) and if my weight fluctuates sometimes it gets worse and then it takes a lot of effort to change it with a screwdriver (you don’t really want to do that mid workout). So like Alan was saying I would recommend the pioneer prong belt so you can adjust it accordingly. Also, I find I need my belt tighter for front squats and over head presses than I do for other movements, so not being able to adjust quickly really sucks.
I have an inzer lever belt as well and got the pioneer adjustable lever for it about a month ago and am loving it. If you aren’t trying to buy a whole other belt I’d highly suggest buying yourself the adjustable lever.
You’ll will also find another occasion when people wear belts: when they’re filming their exercise with the intention to post it on social media or when making a selfie in the gym.
Very informative! I am using the velcro belt for now and changed the velcro part once. Now need to upgrade the belt. First I gotta lose few inches of "Lockdown weight".
great video! but i would add with finding position in the deadlift to maybe also try moving your belt higher up on your torso. That was the biggest factor for me. I have my belt well above my belly button and that allows me to get into the best position personally
EliteFTS sells Pioneer belts. They are a bit lower priced, but can't be customized. I got the Pioneer 13mm 1/2" spaced belt and it is the best belt I have used (have used Inzer, adler).
The prep for an event is exactly how I do it. This year, I just set a random day to peak. I also do hyper specific accessory work to strengthen the core, took those queues from The Rhino.
I personally don't like to wear a belt for anything over three reps, or under 75-80% of what my top set will be, of course there are exceptions, like if my brace in warm up feels weak I might throw it on for a top set of 5, or throw it on a little earlier. For sets of 1,2, and 3 though I enjoy the way I feel with a belt so I wear it for 100% of my top sets. I do extra core specific work so I'm not too worried about development, and it feels good to wear the belt so I do
I hang up my belt, straps and sleeves 2 months ago and got waaay stronger. Heard Eddie hall didn't wear equipment while training for wsm 2017. That's why I tried it

"Hey whats up guys Coach Greg here"
What a fun video. Great format. Amazing choreography. Useful content. Super accessible tone.
Very informative! I am using the velcro belt for now and changed the velcro part once. Now need to upgrade the belt. First I gotta lose few inches of "Lockdown weight".
This channel is a godsend
great video! but i would add with finding position in the deadlift to maybe also try moving your belt higher up on your torso. That was the biggest factor for me. I have my belt well above my belly button and that allows me to get into the best position personally
That's what George Leeman does as well.
Just ordered your belt from pioneer. Little pricey haha. Can’t wait to get it. Thanks for the videos!
Great video, as usual. Informative and entertaining. Keep it up brother.
Agree, pioneer belts are absolutely great 👍🏼
I personally don't like to wear a belt for anything over three reps, or under 75-80% of what my top set will be, of course there are exceptions, like if my brace in warm up feels weak I might throw it on for a top set of 5, or throw it on a little earlier. For sets of 1,2, and 3 though I enjoy the way I feel with a belt so I wear it for 100% of my top sets. I do extra core specific work so I'm not too worried about development, and it feels good to wear the belt so I do
man where was this video when I was gasping for air the first time I wore a prong belt
Haha first time I put my prong belt on I got STUCK
10:10 That gojira riff hitting
That was Another World, right?
Alan, you are the best. THANK YOU!
In my beginner days I wore a belt like a normal trousers belt around hips. I was so pissed it's useless and doesn't help at all... 🤣
I liked your chill voice tone on this one.
I hang up my belt, straps and sleeves 2 months ago and got waaay stronger. Heard Eddie hall didn't wear equipment while training for wsm 2017. That's why I tried it
Right now I am in the clarence0 camp. No belts and whistles. I lift 10% of what he does, so I think I am safe for now.
Clarence is a freak.
I have two Pioneer belts and they are wonderful products.
Always appreciate your content. Only
Found you recently but appreciate your straight forward information, candid opinion, and not trying to push products.
Quality products over at pioneer fit. I have a belt and wrist wraps and you can just feel the quality
great video covering everything about belts! Thank you
